This celebrated British jazz pianist, songwriter and record producer was labelled a veteran by critics at age 19 and over the following decade won most of the major jazz music awards. Born in Surrey and raised in Wandsworth London, he was classically trained and attended the Guildhall School of Music . Emerging in the late 80s as a jazz pianist and influenced by Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner, he recorded three solo albums in his early 20s and his debut album A Clearer View in 1990 was produced by his dream choice of Wayne Shorter. This led to him appearing on the cover of The Wire magazine. He additionally worked with Jean Toussaint, Tommy Smith, and Branford Marsalis In the late 90's Sting invited him to join his band following the death of Kenny Kirkland which saw him tour with Sting for the next six years and recording three albums. He then became a member of Jeff Beck's band, touring for six years and recording a further three albums. During these years he also worked with Chaka Khan, Des'ree, Mica Paris, Carleen Anderson, Manu Katché, Phil Collins, and Peter Gabriel In 2013 after twelve years of touring as a session musician he reestablished himself as a solo artist and soon after, released the album Anything But Look on Lyte Records featuring Will Downing, Omar, Joy Rose, Jacob Collier, Tim Garland and Pino Palladino. He teaches music at Guildhall School of Music and Bath Spa University and additionally composes music for the London-based production music library, Audio Network.

Episode 169: Carleen Anderson - Singer, Songwriter, Composer, Producer, Arranger, Writer...My latest podcast guest Carleen Anderson really needs no introduction. A genuine world class artist... She's such a huge talent in her own right and another to enter Paul Weller's orbit during the solo years - providing us with some very special moments on record and live.Throughout her solo career, she's been featured alongside a multitude of established artists from a wide array of musical genres - Nigel Kennedy, Dr. John, Omar, Chrissie Hynde, Jocelyn Brown, Meshell Ndgeocello, Paul McCartney, Brand New Heavies, Incognito, Ramsay Lewis and more...The Huffington Post called her "Without doubt one of the all-time great female vocalists... Carleen must be seen to be believed..."Amy Winehouse once said "Carleen Anderson - She's someone who I would sit around the venue all day, just to hear her soundcheck..."On this exclusive podcast chat, we hear about her upbringing in Houston, Texas where she was raised by her paternal grandparents during the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Reared up on the sounds rooted in Gospel music inherited from the Pentecostal church where the pastor, David Anderson, Sr. her paternal Grandfather, and her Grandmother Alberta, raised her from an infant. We'll hear stories of her musical family. She is the daughter of soul singer Vicki Anderson, step-daughter of singer, songwriter, Bobby Byrd... and god-daughter of James Brown!. Her birth Father, Dr. Reuben P. Anderson, Sr., is the pastor of his own church in Compton, California, further extending the connection Carleen still retains in gospel music. We'll hear about her relocation with her son to England in 1990 and the just-by-chance beginning of her professional career as the vocalist, composer, arranger and recording artist for Young Disciples. The band were shortlisted for the Mercury Music Prize in 1992.Carleen released her debut solo album in 1994, and was nominated for a Independent Artist Brit Award in 1995.Our connections with Paul Weller begin with Young Disciples as their album was recorded at Solid Bond Studio, and take us through Paul's debut solo album through standout highlights on Stanley Road -especially their spine-tingling shared vocals on Wings of Speed, a co-produced Carleen Anderson album called Blessed Burden in 1998, and performances on record and on stage around Illumination and Studio 150 - complete with two DVD releases of those Weller gigs...Carleen was named Jazz FM's UK Vocalist of 2013 and four years later, musicologist Gilles Peterson presented her with a Worldwide FM Lifetime Achievement Award. These days, Carleen is focused on establishing a platform to expand the stylings of music storytelling theatre. Her most recent album - Cage Street Memorial - was nominated in 2018 for Jazz FM's Innovation of the Year. The project was more than just an album of original music, it was also a theatre production written and performed by Carleen, and an autobiographical book of the same name.Since 2020, she has been working on what she describes as "a blended-roots Opera called MELIOR Opus Griot" with a regional premiere in Devon and a worldwide double album release scheduled for 2024. As we celebrate 150 episodes of The Paul Weller Fan Podcast, what better way to mark the occasion than an episode with elusive producer, Brendan Lynch. From working with The Style Council as an engineer towards the end of their life-cycle (Modernism/Promised Land/King Truman) to co-producing a series of outstanding solo album releases with Paul Weller. In this episode of The Paul Weller Fan Podcast, I am joined by musician, bassist, bandleader and songwriter Yolanda Charles. As a professional bassist for 30 years, she has played with the likes of Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart, Robbie Williams, Sinead O'Connor, Hans Zimmer, Squeeze, and of course, Paul Weller. We'll hear how a chance encounter via Jonathan Ross led to Yolanda joining the Paul Weller Band in 1993 for the Wild Wood tour (with recordings captured for Paul's first solo live album Live Wood - released in September 1994). She performed on the singles Hung Up, Out of the Sinking and You Do Something To Me and continued to play in the live band through the Stanley Road and Heavy Soul periods too. In other Weller alumni connections, you can also hear Yolanda on the Talbot & White album - Off The Beaten Track, on Carleen Anderson's 1998 Weller produced LP, Blessed Burden and with Dee C. Lee on the single It's Not Over with Yolanda's band The Deep M.O. We hear about her musical journey throughout that time period, her latest band - Project PH and even on working with Hans Zimmer on the Dune Soundtrack - which won an Oscar, a Bafta and a Golden Globe for Original Score! Yolanda was awarded an MBE for services to music in 2020. Ernie McKone is a UK-based bass player, producer and tutor whose speciality is jazz, funk, Latin and soul. With so many connections to Paul Weller and the likes of Mick Talbot, Steve White, Carleen Anderson, Jacko Peake and Matt Deighton over the past 30 plus years - there are some great stories to dig into. In 1997, Ernie joined the Paul Weller live band - taking over from Yolanda Charles - and he toured Europe and the UK for a couple of years around the release of the album Heavy Soul. The Victoria Park gig of 1998 has been captured on film (YouTube link below) and the audio was released as a limited edition bonus Live Classics CD with Paul's first solo greatest hits - Modern Classics. More recently Ernie has remixed one of the many stand out tracks from the Paul Weller album Fat Pop - with October 2021 seeing the release of Glad Times (Soul Steppers) - Remixed by Boogie Back. He also did a stonking version of Stone Foundation's Deeper Love (which featured Paul on vocals) with a Late Night Jazz Funk Mix. You can find more info in my show notes at paulwellerfanpodcast.com/episode-91-ernie-mckone Thanks for listening - make sure that you subscribe / follow and leave a review - and if you want to support the podcast financially, you can buy me a virtual coffee (£3) at paulwellerfanpodcast.com/shop Ernie's track record also includes work with Sister Sledge, Galliano, Incognito, PUSH, Seal, Leon Ware, Reuben Wilson, Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Marlena Shaw, Urban Species, Reel People and Craig Charles Fantasy Funk Band. Visuel © Le bien, le mal de Guru et Mc Solaar See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Omar is one of the founding members of British Soul Music. Omar Lyefook MBE is without doubt, one of the greatest soul music talents the United Kingdom has produced in the last 40 years. If anyone has doubts about that, then they might want to consider the list of legendary artists who happily line up to collaborate with him musically, or simply sing his praises – from Stevie Wonder, the late Leon Ware, Erykah Badu, Common, through to Carleen Anderson, D’Angelo, and Soul II Soul’s Caron Wheeler, Angie Stone and U.K. artists Courtney Pine, Rodney P, Kele LeRoc, Natasha Watts and Estelle, all appreciate his truly original and unique voice, musicianship and songwriting talent. The musical history of British soul pioneer Omar is renowned – the Lyefook family has musical talent embedded deep in their DNA, Omars’ father Byron worked as a studio musician and drummer with Bob Marley, Horace Andy and even The Rolling Stones. Omars’ younger brother, the Grammy winning producer, remixer and DJ professionally known as Scratch Professer has been making jaws drop since the age of 13, stunning the crowd at the 1988 DMC UK Finals with his turntable skills. Samia Lye-Fook (Omar’s sister) is a renowned vocalist in her own right, and a BRIT School alumna, then there’s their big brother….Omar.Born October 14, 1968, in London but raised in Canterbury, gifted, prolific and considered a musical prodigy; Omar learned his craft classically, playing the trumpet, piano, bass guitar and percussion. A former principal percussionist of the Kent Youth Orchestra and later a graduate of the Guildhall School Of Music, Omar has been making music for more than 32 years.Back in 1985 he released his first single ‘Mr Postman’ on his father Bryons’ Kongo label, which was also the original home for his first album, which contained the track that changed everything… ‘There’s Nothing Like This’

In 1992 Robert joined Sonja Kristina's band “Cloud 10” and toured the UK extensively over a 5 year period. Between 2003 & 2005 Robert performed many solo concerts in Russia, including the Roerich and Pushkin Museums in Moscow and the House of Composers in St Petersburg. In 2005 he was invited by a member of the State Duma for Udmurtia, to perform at the main theatre in Izhevsk and facilitate voice and percussion workshops in the local area. 5 of the 23 albums mentioned above were recorded in Russia and others will be released in the future from an extensive archive of recordings.Robert was invited by Sonja Kristina to join Curved Air in 2009. The band has toured extensively in the UK and have performed in Germany, Holland, Belgium, Portugal, Italy and on a prog cruise between Tampa, Florida and Cozumel, Mexico. In 2011 they released a live album called ‘Live Atmosphere' and in 2014 ‘North Star', the first new studio album since 1976. Robert played a major part in writing and producing ‘North Star'. In 2016 the new Curved Air Rarity Series was launched with the release of ‘Tapestry of Propositions' in August and ‘Curved Space and Infinity' in November. Robert produced the ‘Tapestry of Propositions' album and ‘Infinity', a trio featuring Florian Pilkington-Miksa (Curved Air's original drummer), Kirby Gregory (Curved Air's guitarist from the 1972 line up) and Robert on keyboards. In 2019 ‘Live At Under The Bridge ~ The 45th Anniversary Concert', recorded in 2015, was released. This was also produced by Robert. He's currently working on producing a live album recorded in Japan in February 2020. Sonja Kristina described Robert's contribution to Curved Air in the following way. "Through deeply emotive playing and his mastery of sonic atmospheres, together with years of classical/jazz-funk-soul collaborations and improvisation, he brings expanded dimensions and possibilities to the band."

In 1923, African American author Jean Toomer published the novel Cane. It wasn’t a best seller at the time but is now held as a modernist classic and a central work of The Harlem Renaissance. A new radio adaptation is to be broadcast on Radio 4. We speak to playwright Janice Okoh and score composer, soul singer Carleen Anderson. Today is Bloomsday, when Dubliners celebrate James Joyce’s Ulysses, the novel about Irish newspaper advertising salesman Leopold Bloom wandering round the city. As Ireland is emerging from lockdown events are moving online and for Zoomsday actor Seán Doyle is MC-ing a Joycean Punk Cabaret with an alternative presentation of extracts, songs, poems as well as Joyce’s saucier love letters. Seán joins us from Dublin just before the event begins. Lockdown came quickly and affected arts organisations around the country with barely any warning. Venues closed their doors and hung up the “closed until further notice” signs. But what’s happening behind the closed doors? We speak to Joanna Meacock from the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow and Anna Renton from Penlee House in Penzance. For one week only Alison Brackenbury is Front Row’s poet in residence. The colsure of museums during Coronavirus has inspired Alison to write new poems about some of those she has visited. Every day this week we will be hearing one of her Museums Unlocked poems. In today’s Alison takes us to Aghanistan via a painting in the Museum of Somerset in Taunton Castle. Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Julian May Studio Manager: John Boland

Colson Whitehead won the Pulitzer Prize for his 2016 novel The Underground Railroad, about slaves escaping from the southern states and seeking sanctuary in the north. The author discusses his new novel The Nickel Boys, which follows the misfortunes of a young black boy, Elwood Curtis, who finds himself being sent to the brutal Nickel Academy, a segregated reform school where the threat of severe - and sometimes fatal - punishment beatings is a constant fear for all the pupils. Prior to Thursday’s Prom featuring the sacred music of Duke Ellington, Samira talks to two of the performers in the concert, singer Carleen Anderson and conductor Peter Edwards, about Ellington’s blend of big-band, gospel and orchestral music in this evening of dance, song and jazz with a Christian theme. Carnival Row is a new fantasy from Amazon Prime which debuts on Friday. Ekow Eshun reviews the series described "as a complex and dark world where Game of Thrones meets Ripper Street." Starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, and directed by Jon Amiel, it features a human detective and a fairy rekindling a dangerous affair in a Victorian fantasy world; the city's uneasy peace collapses when a string of murders reveals an unimaginable monster. We end the programme with a tribute to Sheila Steafel, whose death was announced yesterday. Simpson trial captivated our collective attention. But on a lighter note, Microsoft released Windows 95, and the Sony PlayStation made its U.S. debut. Yet, the echo of 90s House Music Classics provided the sonic backdrop that made the era unforgettable. Mariah Carey: Emotions (12'' Club Mix) When Mariah Carey released "Emotions," it was a defining moment. The track, embedded in the David Morales remix, had the vocals soaring higher than the U.S. box office numbers of Toy Story in 1995. The blend of Carey's vocal range with the beat creates a sublime synergy, still making it a dancefloor essential. 49ers: Don't You Love Me (90's Mix) This song is an interesting outlier. The 49ers managed to juxtapose elements of techno with classic house in "Don't You Love Me," just when Friends made its TV debut and started redefining friendship norms. This song may not have a Ross and Rachel saga, but its pulsating rhythm and evergreen allure still keep feet moving on dance floors today. Clubhouse: Deep In My Heart (American 12'' Mix) Clubhouse's "Deep In My Heart" could almost be the soundtrack of 1996, a year that saw the infamous Unabomber captured and the Spice Girls claiming "Girl Power" with their hit "Wannabe." But in the middle of it all, this number offered a profound, bass-heavy reflection of the deeper strains of house music. D-Mob with Cathy Dennis: That's The Way Of The World (12'' Version) This is a vital track that merged Cathy Dennis's unique vocal style with D-Mob's creative prowess. The song emerged at a time when the first Harry Potter book was published in the UK. Both the book and the song offered escape, but while Harry Potter invited us to a magical world, "That's The Way Of The World" provided an escape on the dance floor. Carleen Anderson: Mama Said (K-Klassic Mix) In 1997, Tiger Woods amazed us with his Masters win at Augusta, but Carleen Anderson's "Mama Said" was winning the hearts of club-goers. Her voice, coupled with K-Klassic Mix's production finesse, made it a sterling example of house music done right. Sounds Of Blackness: I Believe (Classic Gospel Mix) Blending gospel with house music, this track was a spiritual awakening at the apex of the Y2K hysteria. The Classic Gospel Mix gave it an ethereal dimension, offering a musical refuge as we braced for the millennium. Madonna: Secret (Junior's Luscious Club Mix) By the time Madonna's “Secret” rolled out in its Junior's Luscious Club Mix,
