South Central Pennsylvania has some of the worst air pollution in the country. That may come as a surprise to many when they compare a mostly rural area with lots of suburbs and a few small cities to large urban areas throughout the nation. But almost every measurement of air pollution over the last few years ranks the region or individual metropolitan areas like Lancaster and Harrisburg in the top 10 polluted places in the U.S. Faculty and students at Millersville University are measuring and studying air quality in the in region. It's a learning experience for the students but can tell us a lot about the air we breathe. On The Spark Tuesday, Dr. Greg Blumberg, an Assistant Professor of Meteorology in Millersville University's Earth Sciences Department compared Central Pennsylvania's topography with many hills and valleys to Thailand, which has the worst air quality in the world. He added that the air in Central Pennsylvania is nowhere near as bad, but the region's topography is a factor in high levels of air pollution. On the program, Blumberg provided an analogy,"I often like to think about a pot of water or even kind of like waffles. When you're looking at places that have terrain, when you're talking about mountains and valleys, the air pollution can act a lot like syrup, where it just kind of falls down into the the valleys where the little divots are on a waffle. And so the Pennsylvania area has a lot of kind of these different valleys where you can get all that pollution settling down. And one of the things that allows air pollution to kind of intensify is if you're not removing that air. And so if you have stagnant conditions where you don't have very strong winds, the sun's not up allowing some of those pollutants to get mixed, then these are the cases where you might see the air quality really get bad over time. And Pennsylvania kind of has a lot of the ingredients for that right now." There are several interstate and heavily traveled highways in our region and Blumberg indicated the vehicle traffic in Central Pennsylvania is a significant contributor to particle or soot pollution. Keelie Steiner, a senior meteorology major at Millersville studies air quality and appeared on The Spark. She described how a changing climate could make air pollution worse,"Some of these traffic admissions that we're steadily studying react very well in warmer temperatures. So, for example, ozone, which is something in the stratosphere. So, our ozone layer that protects us from those harsh UV rays coming from the sun. However, once ozone finds its way down the troposphere, that's something you don't want to be inhaling. So, over the wintertime, those cooler temperatures, those ozone levels aren't going to be as high because that ozone, the chemical bonds aren't breaking and reproducing as frequently. However, once you get to the summer with warmer temperatures, it becomes a rapid reproduction of ozone. So now you have large amounts of ozone finding itself down at the surface level that people are breathing in, and that has relation to some respiratory and cardiovascular issues."Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Vaccine 4 1 1 - News on the search for a Covid 19 Coronavirus Vaccine
This is Vaccine 411, the latest coronavirus vaccine information for October 19th, 2021. 84-year-old Colin Powell, the retired four-star general who became the country's first Black secretary of state and chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff, died from complications of Covid-19. He was fully vaccinated. Powell had a cancer of a type of white blood cell. France's High Authority for Health decided to no longer allow the Moderna vaccine to be injected as a booster dose against Covid-19. Now only Pfizer is used for boosters in those that are eligible. Sweden and Finland had already suspended use of Moderna for those under 30 due to potential heart risks. And Denmark and Norway formally advised against it for people under 18. Iceland suspended it as a booster dose altogether. Japan is suddenly a big coronavirus success story. And if you ask them what they did, they'll tell you “we have no idea.” Daily cases have plummeted, bars are packed, trains are crowded, and Japan never came anywhere near a lockdown. Some speculate it's because of a late but fast vaccination campaign, bad weather in August that kept people home, or widespread masking, which was already embraced in that country even pre-pandemic. Thousands of California parents were expected to keep their kids home from school to protest a vaccine mandate. Some teachers were also planning on not showing up to classrooms. Nearly 40% of state employees remain unvaccinated. The question is, if we're going to get booster shots, why weren't the vaccine formulas revised to more closely target the Delta variant that's been the biggest problem? The answer: The FDA okayed Pfizer boosters of the original recipe last month because studies showed it works good enough against Delta and the doses could roll out immediately without manufacturing problems. In the United States cases were down 22%, deaths are down 19%, and hospitalizations are down 18% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since September 13. There are 9,675,650 active cases in the United States. Globally, cases were down 11% and deaths were down 15% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since August 26. There are 17,863,141 active cases around the world. The five countries with the most new cases: The U.K. 45,140. Russia 34,303. Turkey 24,114. The United States 17,947. And India 14,289. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots for September 28th, 2021. The U.S. President sought to lead by example as he received his booster shot on camera just one workday after the CDC and FDA recommended a third dose of Pfizer. You're qualified to get one if you have pre-existing medical conditions, high-risk work environments, or are 65 and older. Let's just say the President qualified. Pfizer started a large study testing its oral antiviral drug to prevent COVID-19 infection among those who've been exposed. They're in a battle with Merck and Roche to get there first. The drug is designed to block a key enzyme needed for the virus to multiply and will be combined with a low dose of an older medication widely used as part of treatment for HIV. A Massachusetts police union announced that not a couple, not a few, but dozens of state troopers have quit over a vaccine mandate for state workers. A judge threw out a lawsuit filed by the State Police Association of Massachusetts that sought to at least delay the mandate. While cases are trending down, for many, the damage has already been done. And we're not talking about long COVID. A study out of Oxford shows American males experienced the largest loss in life expectancy in 2020, which shaved 2.2 years off their lifespans. Black and Hispanic groups saw the greatest dip in life expectancy. Some scientists are studying a type of antibody derived from llamas as a possible treatment for COVID. Actually any member of the camelid family, like camels, llamas, and alpacas, will do and produce unique antibodies called nanobodies that are robust and bind to specific targets. The llama they're studying is named Fifi, just so if it works you'll know who to thank. In the United States cases were down 33%, deaths are up 12%, and hospitalizations are down 16% over 14 days. Vaccine 4 1 1 - News on the search for a Covid 19 Coronavirus Vaccine
This is Vaccine 411, the latest coronavirus vaccine information for September 27th, 2021. Health officials in the U.S. say supply isn't a problem. There are more than 40 million doses of vaccines available, so that's enough to give qualified older Americans boosters and the first rounds for young children when the vaccine is approved for them. More than 70 million Americans remain unvaccinated. Breakthrough cases in the vaccinated are still rare but growing less rare. In fact, experts expect them to be even more common in the near future, saying most people will become infected at some point in their lives. But the appeal is still that vaccines will help keep cases from being severe. The CDC's latest data found unvaccinated people are 10 times more likely to be hospitalized from the virus. So if healthcare workers keep quitting, some of them because of vaccine mandates, who'll take care of patients? In New York, the possible answer is The National Guard. They're looking into that, as well as bringing in professionals from other states and countries, and reactivating retired nurses. Some 16% of the state's hospital staff have not been fully vaccinated. In California, first responders also remain disproportionately reluctant to get vaccinated. Public health officials have identified more than 200 outbreaks at police or fire agencies throughout Los Angeles County since the start of the pandemic. Vaccination rates for LAPD an LAFD employees generally lag behind the 68% of eligible county residents who've gotten their shots. Also, lots of vaccine reluctance in the NBA, a league that's trying to figure out what to do about it. There are 10% or so of players that are still holding out. And that doesn't make basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar too happy. He says “there's no room for players” who pass on the vaccine. And as influencers, he says they're “failing to live up to the responsibilities that come with celebrity.” In the United States cases were down 18%, deaths are up 23%, and hospitalizations are down 15% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since September 13. There are 9,858,405 active cases in the United States. With not all states reporting daily numbers, the five states with the greatest increase in per capita hospitalizations over 14 days are Vermont at 45%, Montana 24%, Maine 23%. West Virginia 21%. And Pennsylvania and North Dakota 20%. Vermont and Maine are among the most fully vaccinated states. The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Cleburne, AL. Whitley, KY. Magoffin, KY. Custer, MT. Braxton, WV. Kodiak Island Borough, AK. Lewis, WV. Russell, KY. Big Horn, WY. And Harlan, KY. There have been at least 688,032 deaths in the U.S. recorded as Covid-related. The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that's been fully vaccinated: Vermont unchanged at 69.1%, Connecticut at 68.2%, and Maine at 68%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are West Virginia still unchanged at 40.2%, Wyoming at 41%, and Idaho at 41.1%. The percentage of the U.S. that's been fully vaccinated is 55%. The 5 countries with the largest recent 24-hour increase in the number of fully vaccinated people: Australia and St. Lucia up 2%, and Azerbaijan, Australia, and Oceana 1%. Globally, cases were down 16% and deaths were down 10% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending down since August 27. There are 18,614,780 active cases around the world. The five countries with the most new cases: The U.K. 32,417. India 27,022. Turkey 25,861. The United States 24,343. And Russia 22,498. Vaccine 4 1 1 - News on the search for a Covid 19 Coronavirus Vaccine
This is Vaccine 411, the latest coronavirus vaccine information for May 31st, 2021. A hospital in Houston is being sued by 117 employees who say it's turning them into vaccine “guinea pigs” and breaking the law by requiring they get the shot. The lawsuit alleges compulsory vaccines violate the Nuremberg Code, created as a reaction to Nazi medical experiments. However, updated guidance from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says yes, employers of all kinds can require the vaccine. In New York, interest in vaccines is plummeting and incentives aren't working. In the 24 hours ending 11 a.m. Saturday, there were less than half the doses given just three weeks ago. Rewards like Mets and Yankees tickets, free drinks, and a lottery don't seem to be helping. And in Arkansas, citizens appear they'd rather let the vaccines rot than take them. Nearly 60,000 doses are set to expire and will be trashed at the end of June. South Africa will go back to stricter lockdowns after a sharp rise in cases that indicate the virus is “surging again” in Africa's worst-affected nation. Positive cases in the past seven days were 31% higher than the week before, and cities like Johannesburg and Pretoria are in a third wave. The words “third wave” are also being used in the U.K. Scientists have warned ministers it may have already started and plans to lift all restrictions in England are premature. A surge in hospital admissions could leave the NHS struggling as it works to clear the huge backlog of non-Covid cases. A reminder out of Florida not being vaccinated could get expensive. A concert promoter is saying those who can prove they're fully vaccinated can pay $18 per ticket to attend a concert in Saint Petersburg June 26. Those who can't will be charged $999.99 per ticket. The logic is unvaccinated people will scare off vaccinated ticket buyers so they have to pay to make up for the damage they're causing. In the United States cases were down 39%, deaths are down 27%, and hospitalizations are down 21% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since April 14. Vaccine 4 1 1 - News on the search for a Covid 19 Coronavirus Vaccine
This is Vaccine 411, the latest coronavirus vaccine information for May 24th, 2021.There was a time anyone who suggested the novel coronavirus escaped from a lab in Wuhan was branded a conspiracy theorist, so certain was the reporting that it emerged naturally. Now none other than Dr. Anthony Fauci says he's not convinced. He joins the rising number of voices calling for a real investigation into the virus' origins. For example, the Wall Street Journal reported three researchers from China's Wuhan Institute of Virology sought hospital care in November of 2019, months before the outbreak was disclosed. Their source was a previously undisclosed U.S. intelligence report.New cases in the United States have dropped to rates not seen since June, sparking optimism vaccinations are limiting severe cases and virus spread. Increasingly, pre-pandemic life has largely resumed, with states that have stuck to restrictions preparing to drop them. Health experts however continue to say not enough Americans have been vaccinated to eliminate the potential for new variants to extend the pandemic.Late last week, Taiwan moved to its second highest COVID alert level after a surge of cases. And because the country last year recorded zero cases of community transmission for eight straight months, and now it's in the hundreds, people are asking what happened? Many say its Taiwan's very slow vaccine rollout, and that Australia should take heed because it too is having a slow rollout. There's an image you might have been given about what kind of people are reluctant about the vaccines. Which is fine provided that image includes young mothers. A study out of Northwestern, Harvard, and Rutgers shows parents are more likely to resist the vaccine vs other adults across all racial groups. 73% of black parents expressed being vaccine hesitant or resistant. And the study found young mothers are the most vaccine resistant among all groups. In India, an extreme example of vaccine hesitancy and the result of vaccine misinformation. A team of health officials arrived in a village in Barabanki to administer vaccinations, and numerous citizens jumped in the river and started swimming away to avoid them. Only 18 people took the shot. Others believed they were about to be injected with poison. In the United States cases were down 39%, deaths are down 14%, and hospitalizations are down 22% over 14 days. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for May 24th, 2021.There was a time anyone who suggested the novel coronavirus escaped from a lab in Wuhan was branded a conspiracy theorist, so certain was the reporting that it emerged naturally. Now none other than Dr. Anthony Fauci says he’s not convinced. And because the country last year recorded zero cases of community transmission for eight straight months, and now it’s in the hundreds, people are asking what happened? Many say its Taiwan’s very slow vaccine rollout, and that Australia should take heed because it too is having a slow rollout. There’s an image you might have been given about what kind of people are reluctant about the vaccines. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending down since April 14. There are now 5,790,318 active cases in the United States.
