Potato production in Northeastern North America can lead to stagnant yields and declining soil health. This is why practices such as cover cropping and the use of manure are important. However, these practices also lead to increased weed problems by adding seeds into the weed seedbank. A recent AAFC study explored how cover crops and manure affect weed populations in a potato crop rotation over three years. To speak more about the study, the process and insights gleaned are Judith Nyiraneza and Andrew McKenzie-Gopsill of AAFC. They discuss the background of the still-ongoing research project, insights into the various cover crop/manure combinations, and discuss why weed seeds in manure did not necessarily evolve into dense weed spread.

A former community housing leader says those providers are ready to collaborate with the Government.   Kainga Ora chief executive Andrew McKenzie has resigned, saying the Government's changes aren't what he signed up for.   It comes after a scathing review of the organisation.   Former Monte Cecilia Housing Trust CEO Bernie Smith told Mike Hosking that the last Government stopped community housing providers buying houses from developers, but did it themselves.   He says time and time again first home owners were locked out of the market because Kainga Ora came along with a big chequebook.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Christopher Luxon: Prime Minister on the Government's plans for the third quarter, Andrew McKenzie's redundancy payout

The Prime Minister is clarifying a six-figure redundancy payment to the resigning Kainga Ora CEO.  Christopher Luxon says it was not a decision made by the Government.  The public housing agency's chief executive Andrew McKenzie says he didn't sign up for an overhaul of Kainga Ora.  He's in for a payment of $365 thousand.  Luxon told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking that those arrangements sit with the chair Simon Mouttar, but he calls it an under-performing organisation.   He says they're refreshing the board.  Luxon said that he doesn't know the details of the redundancy, and doesn't want to, what he wants to know is that the organisation is starting to get better. The Prime Minister has also pledged to address law and order during the Government's plan for the third quarter of this year, although he was often coy when asked about specific details of policies.   Luxon published his Government's plan for the third quarter on Monday. The plan covers the period from July to the end of September and included 40 “actions” across areas like the economy and climate change, but Luxon said law and order would be his priority.   “The Government I lead is one of action and we are already making meaningful changes that will keep Kiwis safe in their homes, workplaces and communities,” Luxon said. The plan pledges the Government to giving police “tough powers to go after gangs by restricting their ability to associate and banning gang patches in public” and the power to “get guns out of the hands of criminals”.  While plans for a Government's first 100 days in office have become fairly common features of New Zealand politics, Luxon decided his Government would adopt a 100 day plan-style approach to its entire term of Government by publishing a plan each quarter of what “actions” the Government intends to tick off over the next three months.  Speaking to Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking Breakfast, Luxon compared his progress throughout his time as Prime Minister to the many “corporate turnarounds” he has accomplished in his career, although he acknowledged the difference between a business and a country.  ”I am just focused on the must-do stuff right now, that's what you to do when you are turning stuff around… we can plant those seeds now that we can benefit from down the road.  ”If we don't do that, we are heading down a very dark road.”  Other significant pledges include to publish New Zealand's second Emissions Reduction Plan (ERP), the first such plan published by this Government. ERPs are meant to set out how a Government meets its emissions budgets under the Zero Carbon Act.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 2011, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) scientists were researching ways to control European corn borer populations. In an effort to target the pest at its source, they developed a piece of equipment dubbed the “https://www.potatoesincanada.com/aafc-research-finds-new-lease-on-life-as-weed-seed-crusher/ (potato vine crusher).” The equipment successfully reduced ECB populations in a field, but the pest's ability to fly between fields meant all farms in an area would have to employ the technology for there to be a beneficial effect overall. The crusher went unused for a decade until one AAFC research scientist considered another use for it. In this episode of Tuber Talk, AAFC weed scientist Andrew McKenzie-Gopsill discusses the history of the potato vine crusher, how he found out about it, and the trials he's running to determine the crusher's potential for weed seed management.  Never miss an episode by subscribing on https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/tuber-talk/id1499514906 (Apple Podcasts), https://open.spotify.com/show/0gO1c5GXrfvDGXrbhc0X8J?si=ApJN2MBtTuOCT85t_x0nXQ (Spotify), https://podcasts.google.com/?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5jYXB0aXZhdGUuZm0vY2FuYWRhcy1wb3RhdG8tcG9kY2FzdC8 (Google Podcasts), https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/inputs-by-top-crop-manager/tuber-talk (Stitcher), https://tunein.com/podcasts/Business--Economics-Podcasts/Tuber-Talk-p1296152/ (TuneIn) or wherever you listen to podcasts. Welcome adventurous listeners to the 19th episode of Anechoic Chamber. This is the second part of our two-part exposition of the work and thoughts of our guest Andrew McKenzie. Working since the 1970s, McKenzie is particularly known for his pioneering efforts to expand the vocabulary of recorded sound, which itself expanded into a mission to enhance all modalities of perception - this has been carried out with his flagship project The Hafler Trio as well as in collaboration with artists such as Clock DVA, The Anti Group, and Psychic TV. Though certainly not the only arrow in his McKenzie's quiver, his extensive performing and recording career has both informed, and been informed by, a host of other creative activities drawing upon knowledge from both techno-scientific and esoteric realms: working as a computer programmer before (as he reminds me) there were “pictures” on computer screens. Teaching Tibetan language and calligraphy (and some Sanskrit). Writing books, editing video, designing everything from graphics to instructional materials, and working as both a hypnotherapist and psychotherapist. One of his more recent and significant ventures, dubbed by him “complementary education,” fuses insights gleaned from all of these distinct experiences, and involves conducting 14-hour long sound workshops aimed at re-discovering the creative process in a world obsessed with nominalization (in other words, with the act of devaluing a process by conceptualizing it as a thing or object). After fruitful residencies in the Netherlands, Sweden, Iceland and elsewhere, McKenzie now resides in Estonia, from which he joined our host for the following conversation. This comes with the disclaimer that, despite capturing several hours worth of useful material for these next couple episodes, we still emerge with little more than a snapshot of a legitimately eclectic and evolving personality. Welcome adventurous listeners to the 18th episode of Anechoic Chamber. This will be the first in a two-part exposition of the work and thoughts of our guest Andrew McKenzie. Rubab wonders what would be the best course of action in their situation. Sagi asks about what if the brake is always stronger than the gas, will there be no sleep? Andrew sleeps in short spurts of time and has struggled for 17 years. Mckenzie feels like she will never sleep again. Elisabeth gets scared of sleeping because she believes something will happen to her. Daniel hits a speed bump after some gastro medications. Sean has started CBT-I and hopes that this along with removal of alcohol will lead to sleeping well. REMINISCENCE by John McAulay REMINISCENCE is a work of fiction based on the generations of the McKenzie brothers who came to Australia during the gold rush days of the 1850’s. It is related from the situation in a nursing home of one of their descendants, ‘the old man’, Andrew McKenzie, and his relationship with the nurses who attend him. It spans 160 years of Australia’s history and the characters participate in many of the major historical and social events that occurred over that time. ‘The old man’ is a Western Queensland grazier, a genuine old bushie who espouses conservative values and tries to influence all about him to adopt them too. On the other hand, controversial social issues such as the Stolen Generation, Vietnam War and family relationships are handled with sensitivity. The trials and tribulations of successive generations of McKenzies are detailed, family connections explored, and romances developed. Above all, it is a love story, with a piquant ending that brings the story to a heartwarming close. About The Author I have spent most of my working life in the dairy industry, both as owner and operator of a commercial farm and industry politics and management, which has allowed me to travel extensively, mainly around Australia and worldwide. I enjoy reading, love history, have an active imagination, and nearly eighty years of experience to draw on. After self-publishing AUSSIE YARNS consisting of twenty short stories in 2011, I embarked on my first novel entitled REMINISCENCE. It combines the modern-day life and experiences of an older man with his forebears' historical experiences who arrived in Australia in the gold rush days in the 1850s. I have since finished another novella entitled CASSIE, another book called YARNS, ANECDOTES AND MEMOIRS, and most recently a book called F WORDS, a compilation of articles on 100 interesting words which start with the letter F. I have also written more than 200 poems, a few of which have appeared in print following competitions. Just for fun, I converted eight of the stories from AUSSIE YARNS into plays and, using audience members to play the parts, stage them at gatherings of day-trippers, nursing homes, etc. I also give talks to school groups, study centers, holiday camps, and tour groups on various topics, including the Kilcoy Yowie. All this while I continue to run a little cattle property, breeding and fattening Droughtmasters. https://www.authorjohnmcaulay.com/ https://www.amazon.com/Reminiscence-John-McAulay/dp/0646910353/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Reminiscence+John+McAulay&qid=1611014844&s=digital-text&sr=1-1 http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/gsh2021a.mp3

As that gets sorted  Dave makes occasional announcements until Bob arrives to start his show. Bob introduces listenerss ideas for feeding "Tass" the Thameside cat. There's a demo tape from One Track Mind playing "Your Mother Doesn't Love You". At 8:00 Sarah has a 30 minute show absolutely packed with dedications. She also has Mark interviewing Dolly Mixture who played the Greyhound in Fulham. Lola Payola and The Schoolgirl Song gets played (again).Alex who plays highlights from the Circle Line Picnic where about 100 listeners took over a whole carriage.
