Dublin-based traditional Irish duo Varo (Lucie Azconaga and Consuelo Nerea Breschi) released their second album The World That I Knew on May 9. A collaborative album produced by John 'Spud' Murphy (Lankum), it features some of the most acclaimed names in the Irish folk music world in 2025: Ruth Clinton (Landless, Poor Creature), Cormac Mac Diarmada (Lankum, Poor Creature), Alannah Thornburgh, Inni-K, John Francis Flynn, Anna Mieke, Niamh Bury, Lemoncello, Junior Brother, Ian Lynch (Lankum), Branwen (Rufous Nightjar), and Slow Moving Clouds, among many other musicians too. Five years in the making, The World That I Knew began a month into lockdown. Lucie and Consuelo began working on a meaningful project related to the challenging and historical times the world was experiencing, selecting 10 songs, written between 30 and 300 years ago, that speak powerfully to our present moment.“Through the passage of time, political, social and cultural contexts vary, but the core of people's experiences remain the same,” say Varo. “Themes like loneliness, heartbreak, racism, homesickness, and human connection are universal. These songs still speak truth.” Buy The World That I Knew: https://varodublin.bandcamp.com/
‘Roving Out' is a radio documentary that celebrates the burgeoning musical culture of Ireland, by focusing on musical artists Mohammad Syfkhan, Varo, Qbanaa and Wise Wolf, who have all made Ireland their home. Named after the traditional song, ‘As I Roved Out', it explores how these musicians decided to leave their own countries, some due to war and persecution, others for adventure to seek a new life on this island. All of the artists have managed to find a foothold in the Irish musical community, where they have met like-minded people and managed to combine their own culture with Irish musical forms. The artists all represent different countries including Syria, Italy, France, Cuba and Palestine and the scope of their music takes in many genres from traditional and folk to R n' B, pop and hip hop.Mohammad Syfkhan - a Kurdish/Syrian Singer and Bouzouki player has released his debut album ‘I am Kurdish' on the Leitrim based record label Nyahh records. He has played many gigs around Ireland including a sold-out album launch at the Bello Bar in Dublin. He will be appearing on festival bills throughout the Summer.Varo are singers and fiddle players Lucie Azconaga and Consuelo Nerea Breschi, who met in Dublin in 2015. They have recorded a soon to be released collaboration album featuring Ian Lynch (Lankum), John Francis Flynn, Anna Mieke, Slow Moving Clouds, Inni-K amongst others.Having spent her first year exploring a range of styles and genres, Cuban Irish artist Qbanaa returns in 2025 with the sound that may well come to define her. Qbanaa's forthcoming EP Elisa (her nickname in Cuba) containing snippets of found sounds, street recordings and conversations made in Cuba, poetic bilingual lyricism and immersive soundscapes makes for a collection of beautifully understated original music.Talha AlAli, AKA Talha Wise Wolf, is a Palestinian psychotherapist, activist, hip-hop artist, and human rights defender. Since moving to Ireland in the 2010s, Talha has studied a Masters in Psychology and performed many gigs around the country. The programme investigates the lives of these musicians before they moved to Ireland, their reasons for moving here, and how they have brought their unique musical cultures to boost the thriving music scene here. It celebrates the diversity of Ireland and its music, while also examining difficult subjects such as the circumstances that have caused some of the artists to migrate here, racism they have experienced and difficulties in integrating to Irish society at first. For more, see Newstalk.com.
French-American musician and composer Zoé Basha released her debut album Gamble on April 17. Blending storytelling traditions, Appalachian mountain songs, Irish traditional music, and American blues and ragtime, the album is a woozy melange. We talk about her life journey, travelling around the US, joining the Occupy San Francisco protests, moving to Dingle, Dublin, France to learn traditional French timber framing, and back to Ireland. Throughout it all, there's music, though she did fall out of love with it for a while before Rufous Nightjar started up with Anna Mieke and Branwen Kavanagh. And now comes her debut solo album Gamble. From the press release: Zoé's debut is an intimate exploration of identity, grief, the deconstructing of societal norms, and the complexities of human connection, all delivered with a mesmerising voice that echoes the vulnerability and depth of her diverse influences. Inspired by the greats of times passed such as Billie Holiday, The Mills Brothers, Jimmie Rodgers, Joni Mitchell, Texas Gladden, Edith Piaf and The Steve Miller Band– as well as her peers in the Irish folk music scene, Zoé Basha savours the sounds of golden eras with contemporary nuance and shameless honesty. Zoé Basha tour dates: April 24: De Burgos Club, Galway April 25: The Glens Centre, Manorhamilton, Leitrim April 26: The Duncairn, Belfast April 27: The Record Room, Limerick May 1: Fennelly's of Callan, Kilkenny May 2: Bray Jazz Fest, Wicklow May 3: The Crane Lane Theatre, Cork May 4: Blennerville, Tralee, Co. On the episode, Anna B Savage talks about books and book clubs, writer's block and feeding creativity, moving to Dublin for music college and then Donegal, working with those Irish musicians and the ideas underpinning the record. The Irish singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Anna Mieke spent much of her youth traveling the world – from Spain to Bangladesh, Bulgaria to New Zealand. Her songs can conjure an expansive sense of place, and of moving through those places - touching on change, age, death, dreaming, memory, family, and perhaps an alternate reality on her latest album Theatre. Anna Mieke's enveloping acoustic chamber-folk can start with her borrowed 1936 Epiphone guitar, and may also involve improvisation with her core band. She's also a bouzouki player, pianist, and a cellist who played with HEX, a Cork-based experimental outfit, and was a vocalist with the singing group, Rufous Nightjar. She's collaborated with Irish artists Crash Ensemble, Adrian Crowley, and Linda Buckley and with New York-based artists Charlotte Greve, Grey McMurray, and Anna Roberts Gevalt; in March, Mieke will play shows with Iron & Wine. Anna Mieke and her band stopped by on their current tour to play these recent songs, in-studio. Set list: “Seraphim”, “Twin”, “Coralline” Watch “Seraphim”: Watch “Twin”: Watch “Coralline”:
On this third Fresh Éire installment, Dónal goes digging for fire among a plethora of new Irish releases. There's a written response to Anna Mieke's magnificent sophomore album Theatre and a tribute to the independent Dublin label Where The Time Goes with a couple of examples of dynamic recent releases from them in the shape of Jennifer Moore and Seán Being. There's also the return of Meltybrains? to celebrate, a glorious Captain Beefheart cover from Niamh Regan to marvel over and fresh sounds to enjoy from young producers Kobina, Gaptoof and Brién. Plus we talk about Kate's journey to this point, how a tap on the shoulder as she was walking down Grafton Street changed everything for her. We hear three Crash tracks from [REACTIONS]: One Day, This is the Space Between Your Hand and Mine, and Stone or Rot. New music section 53.29: Moesha - Drag https://youtu.be/FbdfnLpV8aI 58.27: Sarah Buckley - Dream Catching https://sarahbuckleymusic.bandcamp.com/ More information on Crash Ensemble's 25th anniversary celebrations: [REACTIONS] limited edition double album release and film screenings Amidst the onset of the global pandemic, Crash Ensemble commissioned 17 Irish and international composers from a range of musical backgrounds to write new works for duos within the group. Building on existing collaborative partnerships and cultivating and nurturing new relationships, composers were invited to create a musical response to their experiences, the current state and their thoughts for the future. The [REACTIONS] composers are: Amy Rooney, Anna Mieke, Anna Murray, Anselm McDonnell, Bébhinn McDonnell, Bekah Simms, David Fennessy, Deirdre Gribbin, Diamanda Dramm, Éna Brennan, Jonathan Nangle, Rachael Lavelle, Rose Connolly, Seán Ó'Dálaigh, Sebastian Adams, Siobhán Cleary, and Stephen Shannon. Each composer documented their creative process with text and imagery, offering a fly on the wall view of the composers' studio spaces, visual imagery and text journaling during the creative process. The duos were recorded and will now be presented in a limited-edition double album release [REACTIONS], coming November 25th. Audio visual material was combined with these recordings to make an accompanying film by Crash's resident filmmaker, Laura Sheeran, which will be screened at The Irish Film Institute, Wednesday 30th November 2022. Performances at The National Concert Hall The 25th year anniversary programme culminates with two special concerts and a cutting-edge installation at the National Concert Hall (NCH). The first celebratory concert, Crash 25! Charged Disruption, on Saturday 3rd December (The Studio) sees the acclaimed ensemble, with conductor Ryan McAdams, perform Donnacha Dennehy's magnetic, soulful and influential work Grá agas Bás with vocalist Iarla Ó Lionáird. In the second part of the concert Artist in Residence Diamanda La Berge Dramm and writer Neva Elliot present Crashed, drawing on the unique energy of the players of the group, through the use of their voices and instruments. For the second birthday concert, Crash 25! Living Perspectives, on Sunday 4th December (The Studio) the ensemble's programme comprises Australian composer Liza Lim's Extinction Events and Dawn Chorus and Barry O'Halpin's experimental work Wingform, which takes advantage of Crash's unique ability to cover a breadth of musical ground: winding melodies, mechanical rhythms, rapid lines and hypnotic drones. The previous week, from Thursday 24th November to Sunday 27th November, The Studio space in the National Concert Hall hosts Crash 25! Wingform Installation. The installation is the work of video artist and filmmaker Jack Phelan who created a work responding to the visual themes of Irish composer, Barry O'Halpin's Wingform - a four movement work for solo guitar and ensemble. Using a simple set of shapes, materials and layout, the installation aims to evoke the essence of the ensemble. Tickets for Crash 25! Charged Disruption (3rd December) and Crash 25! Living Perspectives (4th December): €18 are available from nch.ie

Conor Tallon met up with William Hammond in a socially distant 'Backyard' interview..to discuss how this year's festival has been reimagined... Behind closed doors ..well..mostly! There are some live gigs going! The 41st Cork Folk Festival runs from 30 September - 4 October with key anchor events taking place behind closed doors. As part of a re-imagined festival, over 20 concerts, launches, walks and workshops are planned, including free live streaming of two concerts from the Cork Opera House featuring top folk musicians. One of Ireland's most exciting traditional music groups, The Bonny Men and Cork's own distinguished songwriter, John Spillane performing with Dingle songstress Pauline Scanlon, are among the artists invited to take part in the one-off virtual concerts — held without audiences — on 2 and 3 October. Produced by Aniar TV, these concerts will be streamed live on TG4's social platforms and broadcast on TG4 television at a later date. Further details are available at corkfolkfestival.com. Festival Organiser, William Hammond said: “In our four decades of running the festival, there has never been a year quite like this. Similar to so many cultural events across the country, we needed a solution — that kept both audiences and musicians safe but still celebrated the beauty of folk music. The programme for our 41st edition of the Festival, which we are calling Festival Behind Closed Doors, is about bringing people together — virtually and in small numbers — to celebrate the extraordinary work of musicians who have provided solace and joy in recent months.” Along with the live streaming from the Cork Opera House stage — which will also include performances from The Lee Valley String Band; Karen Casey with Niamh Dunne and Sean Óg Graham; Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, Nia Byrne and Manus Lunny; and Strung with Maria Ryan, Lucia Mac Partlin, Maria O'Connor and Aonghus McCarthy — across the two nights, smaller concerts will also take place. The line-up includes a mix of up-and-coming talent and more seasoned stalwarts. The Cork Folk Festival, funded by Cork City Council, will see singer/songwriter Leah Sohotra and multi-instrumentalist Martin Leahy perform at the Kino on 1 October. There will two concerts — 6.30pm and 8.30pm — on 2 October — from family trio Greenshine with Martin Leahy at the Triskel Arts Centre. Singer songwriter Anna Mieke will also perform at the Kino that day. A fundraiser — Performing A Night for Ron — takes place on 4 October for Fermoy musician Ron Kavana, who is currently receiving dialysis. We invite you to spend time with Anna-Mieke Anderson, a B Corp founder and CEO of MiaDonna & Company and The Greener Diamond (www.miadonna.com). Named by Entreprenuer Magazine as one of their 100 Powerful Women in 2019, we thoroughly enjoyed discussing how the passions that inspire the birth of a business still require sound strategies to keep that mission alive. Based in Portland, OR, USA, Anna-Mieke is globally recognized as the pioneer of the lab-grown diamond (LGD) industry. After learning the conflict origin of her own earth-mined diamond in 2005, Anna-Mieke challenged the notion that gemstones, particularly diamonds, could only come from a place of unnecessary hardship. In 2007, she launched MiaDonna and pushed the quality of lab-grown diamonds to the highest levels. Today, ten percent of net profits are given to their non-profit foundation, The Greener Diamond, which helps free women and children oppressed by the active conflict diamond mining industry. Anna-Meike is a dedicated mother of 2, an avid philanthropist and successful entrepreneur, who is internationally recognized as a humanitarian and activist who works tirelessly to inspire other young women to follow their entrepreneurial spirit. Twelve years ago Anna-Mieke had the vision to create a conflict-free diamond and has led the evolution of the lab-grown diamond industry. Even before the technology to create diamonds was perfected she knew that the only way to combat conflict-diamonds was to grow them in a modern-day lab environment. Some questions Lucy asks: How did you come up with the then, unheard of idea of growing diamonds for jewellery purposes in a laboratory? Where did you get the self belief that the project might work? How did you fund the business idea? How did you deal with the David Vs Goliath vibe you experienced from the ‘haters’ from within the industry? Where did you find the courage to keep going when you were experiencing tough times in your personal life as well as discouragement from the business opposition? In The Episode you will learn: How a chance letter she received from a 9 year old Liberian boy changed the course of AM’s life (and those of millions of others), forever. How it has been possible for a non-uni educated, single mum of two young kids to disrupt and change the direction of the billion dollar, global diamond industry (that initially tried to diminish her) for the infinite better.
