Josh Plasse is an actor, producer and published author. The son of a Navy Seal, he's appeared in more than 50 episodes of network television, including iCarly, Grey's Anatomy and The Baxters. His first novel, Dust, drops February 4, 2025 on Resolve Editions. In 2022, Josh co-wrote, produced, and acted in the feature film Ride, starring C. Thomas Howell, Annabeth Gish and Forrie J. Smith. Originally conceived as a television pilot, the script sold to a production house, who bobbled the project when the pandemic hit. Josh and his team then re-imagined it as a feature, raised the $2 million budget and set to work. The story of Ride's ride — its inception, production and promotional effort — is worth the listen alone. It's a lesson not only in imagination and fortitude, but the critical role strategic planning plays in translating an original story into a commercial success. Sometimes you need to exercise as much creativity on the promotional side of your project as you do the art itself. Get full access to The Morse Code at korby.substack.com/subscribe

Brovember concludes with some mid-30s male ennui in the mid-90s, “Beautiful Girls”. Despite the stacked ensemble cast of Oscar winners and nominees, only Rosie O'Donnell gets to steal the show for a couple minutes while Uma Thurman, Mira Sorvino, Annabeth Gish, Lauren Holly and Martha Plimpton get to play girlfriends and love interests and Natalie Portman is the literal girl next door in a very uncomfortable subplot that truly signals our retreat from bro movies next month. This week we are trying to recover Mulder from a Nike Cult while we discuss “This Is Not Happening”! We're talking how Theresa Hosey is the original Grunge Teen, how it's dangerous to let Doggett emote on a plane, that Skinner may not be helpful in this investigation but he does have a great chest to cry into, how Scully and Skinner are like under-socialized dogs meeting a new dog at the park, and celebrate that Annabeth Gish has finally arrived! We worry that Doggett is getting outnumbered by believers, discuss Mulder's future as a medical skeleton, wonder why Skinner didn't just follow the trail of spleens Mulder left behind him after the UFO, and cheer on Richie Slay. Listen, we tried valiantly not to laugh at Scully's “Nooooo!!!” because it is a sad moment, but we don't quite make it.Note: The Lone Gunmen coverage starts next week and will be interspersed with the rest of The X-Files Season 8. A Tree Grows On Brosnan Pierce Brosnan retires from James Bond duties to write books for Stephen King in the 2011 cable miniseries Bag of Bones. But is the ghost haunting his New England cottage his recently killed wife (Haunting of Hill House's Annabeth Gish), or a blues singer (Dreamgirls' Anika Noni Rose) still cursing locals for wrongs received back in the 1930s? And does Mick Garris (The Stand) have anything in his bag of directing tricks to help this quiet story of grief and writer's block take root as a TV ratings event? Arnie, Jakob, and Stuart spell it out for you now!

Yellowjackets might be taking a break, but The Watchers doesn't quit. Jodie and Andrea are using the off-season break to share the movies that made them the kind of people who were destined to be obsessed with a show like Yellowjackets. It's time to strap on your skates, trade your five hundred dollar jacket in for an old bum's trenchcoat, and, for the love of god, please don't date a highschooler. Andrea made Jodie watch the 1987 generation squeeze flick, Hiding Out, and they are both struggling with that fact. Hiding Out is a mostly pleasant, sometimes funny movie that gives Jon Cryer the chance to be sort of charming, but it also asks you to root 29-year-old Andrew's relationship with his 17-year-old classmate, Ryan (played by the delightful Annabeth Gish). It's complicated. We're conflicted. We also talk a lot about Jersey, a little about roller skating, and Andrea uncovers something deep in her psyche that, honestly, she's still dealing with right now as she writes these episode notes. For next week, Jodie picked the movie she has been most wanting to cover since we started covering movies on The Watchers, 1990's Pump Up the Volume. It's a coming-of-age high school comedy-drama starring Christian Slater and featuring an incredible soundtrack. You can't stream this one on any of the regular services (probably because of that incredible soundtrack), BUT you can watch it for free in two different places. Pick whichever suits your preference. In a seamless, 20 part playlist on YoutubeIn full, through the Internet ArchiveHere's the article Jodie recommended: Inside The Rink, the Iconic Roller Skating Hot Spot That Ruled North Jersey in the '80s and '90s by Amy KuperinskyIf you're reading this, that means you've probably got your podcatcher of choice open right now. Live from Pawnee: A Parks and Recreation Fan Rewatch Podcast
This week Mark and Allen break down the Episode where we are introduced to Ben's sister, Stephanie Wyatt! Leslie and Ben head to his hometown of Partridge, Minnesota, where he was mayor at the age of 18, drove the city to 30% unemployment when he attempted to create a winter sports complex called "Ice Town,", and got impeached two months later. As a gesture of goodwill, all these years later, the town is offering Ben the key to the city, a distinction given to all city mayors. Ben is pleased that the city has finally gotten over the Ice Town debacle, and starts to feel at home again. Before the ceremony, they visit Ben's sister Stephanie at her home, where Ben practices his acceptance speech. Out of nowhere, Ben suddenly falls down in pain and is taken to the hospital, where it is revealed he has kidney stones. With Ben hopped up on morphine, the doctor insists he is unable to go anywhere, and needs to stay there. Trying to salvage things, Leslie plans to go to the ceremony on Ben's behalf to accept the key to the city. Meanwhile, Ron is being sued by Councilman Jamm for punching him in the face on the night of Leslie's wedding. He later meets with Jamm and his attorneys where Ron calls upon Andy, April, and Tom as witnesses. Although well intentioned, both April and Tom provide false statements about Ron to make him look better. Ron is not happy about this, ultimately asking them to recant their original testimonies and, instead, tell the truth, even though it will likely portray Ron in a bad light. Finally, now that Chris has officially agreed to be the sperm donor for Ann's baby, both of them are taking a lot of time trying to establish exactly how compatible they will be as parents. This starts with them both taking an online parenting quiz for compatibility, at the suggestion of Ann's doctor, Dr. Van Dyne. They do NOT do well, scoring only 58%. They then proceed to attempt a myriad of other approaches, including carrying around an egg for the day, carrying around a coffee cup for the day, and finally visiting Dr. Van Dyne to help them assess the situation. As always, we tackle the tough questions, such as ... Can Ben escape the hospital to be there at the ceremony? How damning will April and Tom's testimonies be? What does Dr. Van Dyne think of Chris and Ann's high level of incompatibility? Will the ceremony in Partridge go smoothly, or will there be hiccups? If he loses, will Ron be able to afford the court-ordered settlements? Is there a final test Chris and Ann can take to determine if the two of them co-parenting is at all viable? Does Ben regret not meeting the Partridge city mascot, Fred The Sled? Does Councilman Jamm win the day, or can April and Tom come up with a plan to help Ron? Will Ann have to start all over with her sperm donor search? Loyal podcast viewers, whether we're in Pawnee or Partridge, Season 5 has never failed to deliver ... so far. Can it continue? Tune in and find out with our review! In lieu of a commercial, Ron is doing a PSA "The More You Know" reviewing Seven Unknown Laws of Pawnee.

With an Oscar nomination under her belt for a short film and connections to many in Hollywood, Stacy Title was in a great position to make her first feature. She and screenwriter Dan Rosen made a black comedy that tackled liberals and conservatives along with bombastic one-way thinking with their collaboration The Last Supper. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our 90s Comedies series with Title's 1995 film The Last Supper. More Than Biblical References The title clearly connects the film to Biblical stories, so does that make this film more of a parable? Crafting a black comedy can be very challenging as often, we're left with few people to root for. That's certainly the case here as everyone ends up fairly despicable, even if they find a form of salvation in the end. So with all of that, how well does Title bring this film to fruition? And what about the actors? We have Cameron Diaz, Ron Eldard, Annabeth Gish, Courtney B. Vance, and Jonathan Penner as our five liberal grad students who set the story's deadly dinners into motion. Their guests include Bill Paxton, Charles Durning, Mark Harmon, Jason Alexander, and Ron Perlman. The actors are all bringing their own thing to the parts, but are they given enough to work with? Or perhaps as a parable, the script is giving them – and by extension us – enough to work with so we can watch the story unfold and deliver its message. To the point of the message, is it as effective as we'd like? Does the ‘if you could travel back in time, would you kill young Hitler before he could do anything' question posed several times throughout the film deliver the point of the film? How about that last dinner with Ron Perlman's Rush Limbaugh-esque character? And what about the story thread with Nora Dunn's sheriff as she tries to find a missing girl? What's that doing for the story? Is it as effective as we want it to be? Could it have been used for better effect? Stacy Title's Battle with ALS Unfortunately, Stacy Title was diagnosed with ALS in 2017, and it took her from this life in 2021. She never had as robust a film career as she likely deserved, though she still managed to make some interesting projects. We chat a bit about her and the struggles she had. We also touch on the commitment her husband Penner had in supporting her through this difficult time. Wrapping up All in all, it's an interesting film that generates some interesting conversations. Did it work better in 1995 than it does today? Or perhaps does it feel more relevant today than it did then? Would it work as a play now if updated? Or would that fall as flat as the film does for some modern eyes? There's a lot to talk about here and we have a great time digging into it. So check it out then tune in.
