Episode 98: Daniel Eisenman is one of those guys you see that just inspires you by the way he lives his life. He’s not one of those preachy life hack hacks. He’s the real deal. I read his book Breaking Normal last year and thought “this guy gets it” so naturally, I had to have him on the pod to dive deeper on how we can all break free from the disease of normalcy. In this episode, Daniel talks about how he hoped off the path of "NORMAL" as people advised him to go to med school, settle down, and live the standard American life. Daniel decided to "take a year off." That year off has now turned into a decade of BREAKING NORMAL adventures throughout all 50 states and 20+ countries. He travels the world as a keynote speaker and facilitator of Breaking Normal Experiences / radical retreats and workshops (though he likes to call them playshops, as what's more pure than play?) based on the principles of raw honesty and emotional freedom. He found that the common theme through his journey and experiences was that so many people seemed to be trapped in self-imposed prisons, keeping a lid on their genius, joy, & growth. Thus Breaking Normal was birthed as a way for people to free themselves from this self-imposed prison. In Celebration of Black History Month on Rising Stories, we are continuing our conversations with Women of Color who are changing their world. Today I am speaking with an influencer who is creating a space for women who are not of color to learn about racial justice and about sisterly love. Marcie Walker has started the popular Instagram account called Blackcoffeewithwhitefriends. Marcie began her journey on racial discussions after reaching out to a teacher when her daughter’s class began slave debates. Listen to hear the outcome of this conversation. Today’s guest is an activist, writer, speaker, who critically analyzes white feminism. She is causing quite an upheaval on Instagram as she explores the "intersection of race and womanhood" She also voices her views through her workshops, and Harper’s Bazaar essays. Rachel Cargle is providing intellectual discourse, resources, and tools to help dismantle the systems that are harming people of color. But on Rising Stories Podcast you will hear a different side of Rachel Cargle. On this show, you will find out why Rachel is an entrepreneur at heart. Rachel has one of the healthiest views on money I have heard of in a long while. She gives us a glimpse into her life from moving to DC to running her corporation and initiatives. This woman knows about finances! Having raised over $218,000 to help pay for therapy and mental health counseling for women & girls of color. We also touch on the topic of where black men can find their place in the spaces she is shedding light on for women. Listen to the very end when Rachel answers my lightning round of fun questions. Welcome to Season 3 of Rising Stories Podcast! As most of you know, I am the Lean In regional leader for LEAN IN Tennessee. Last August I attended the global Lean In regional leaders conference in Palo, California, where I met some amazing women who spoke and encouraged us to continue on our journey for gender equality in the workplace. This guest was one of those speakers, and I knew I had to have her on the show My guest for our season opener is Joanne Lipman, Joanne is the bestselling author of That's What She Said: What Men Need to Know (and Women Need to Tell Them) About Working Together. One of the nation's leading journalists, she most recently was the chief content officer of Gannett and editor-in-chief of USA TODAY. Joanne and I talk about the discussions that we all need to be having with the men we work with. Conversations that need to take place about the #metoo topic and how we, as women, can move into a better place of equality. It was a fantastic conversation filled with lots of great advice and insights for how we, as women, can move into a place of equality in the workplace. Joanne and I also talked about her book club, her best business advice from her former boss and we even talked about her favorite seasonal snack! Today is a recognized day for women like me. It's Latina Equal Pay Day. A day to bring awareness to this inequality in the U.S. As the host of Rising Stories Podcast and Regional Leader for Lean In Tennessee, I want to share some data today from Lean IN.org on the pay gap for Latina women and the implications it has had on our futures and our families. Here are just a few calls to action provocations. Many Equal Rights Advocates are taking the lead on implementation and enforcement efforts related to the Fair Pay Act. Find out who they are in your city. Vote at this year’s election on November 6. Tell your representatives in Congress to vote for legislation that will close the Latina Wage Gap. Read and Share the LeanIn.org & McKinsey annual study Women in the Workplace Support your Latina co-workers & friends (don’t have one, connect with me on LinkedIn or Instagram) You can also turn awareness into action by joining a Lean In circle and taking strides toward a more equal world. Lean In Circles are small peer groups that meet regularly to share ideas, gain skills, seek advice, and show solidarity. They're a place where women can be unapologetically ambitious. Being in a circle has allowed me to ask for what I want and to aim higher. I am supported by a whole world of powerful women. You can join our circle here or by visiting Lean In org circles to find a circle and network near you. Don't forget to visit our shop on Amazon where you can find more favorite things from the show. Today on the show I am talking to Lincee Ray, author of a book called I hate Green Beans, (she explains why she chose this title in the show), she also has a blog by that name. But that is not all, Lincee’s claim to FAME is that she began writing episode recaps for The Bachelor. She began writing these commentary recaps back when the bachelor was just a little tv show that we all thought would not get picked up for another season. When the Bachelor took off, so did Lincee’s writing. She is now a full time writer and writes for Entertainment Weekly, Associated Press and Huffington Post, just to name a few. Lincee and I talked about how she got start as a writer, our favorite Disney treat and of course reality TV.
