On this weeks episode, have a listen to the conversation between Leah and David McQueen on his longest day and how he learnt how even if there are things beyond his control, he can manage the ones that are within it. It was a day when he and his wife, as ethnic minorities, experienced a lack of care in the maternity hospital. Calmly, he told the doctors of the need of his wife who was suffering immensely from the pain to have a C-section. Once the professionals decided to give Davids wife a C-section and the baby was born, he realised the power of life and the importance of cherishing it. He understood that life sometimes throws you curved balls but its how we respond that makes us who we are.Through that day, David wants to be present around the wellbeing of his children. It gave him opportunities for conversations with other fathers on the question of how they could challenge the notions around being black fathers.His experience of nurturing his daughters made him see, as a leadership coach, that his clients are individuals with emotions and a lot on their minds. He finds out about how they present based on their answers to how they are with their friends and family.From his parenting and coaching, David has learnt to have a sense of distance, to have the courage to ask questions that challenge, and to help them navigate their way through difficulties. Ultimately, he comes from a place of love, nurture, and care.

David shares some life experiences, powerful insights and we touch on subjects such as the importance of followership, his BRAVE framework for good leadership, and how to take a systems approach to inclusive leadership.  David's dedication to DEI is apparent through his years of experience as an executive coach, international keynote speaker, and facilitator. David co-founded professional development company Q Squared Ltd. He also hosts The BRAVE Leader podcast and dubs himself the ‘compassionate provocateur' as he offers ‘unapologetic insights'. In addition, he is also a blogger on all things leadership and cultural change.  During our discussion, David reveals how he has always had a penchant for writing and the pandemic provided the perfect opportunity for him to finally let his creative juices flow. He was initially motivated to write a book that inspired people to think about their decision-making processes. David shares many relatable personal experiences that shaped his career journey. He has an eclectic professional background - initially studying law, and then accounting, before later realising his passion for public speaking. Function over Title - David warns against some of the pitfalls of poor leadership, such as inflated egos, and encourages how a good leader should be brave enough to go beyond their title and be functional. The Alignment of Collective Values - David offers powerful strategies to help embed inclusion into the workplace and ensure the collective values of the organisation are aligned. Rationality Over Fear - David outlines how organisations should be brave enough to embrace their discomfort, and confront their fears. He offers strategies to help create a system for rational dialogue and authentic conversations. There should be a ‘conversation system' for internal discussions with staff and stakeholders. An Inclusive Mindset - David advises how instead of approaching DEI as a ‘tick-box' exercise, organisations should establish an inclusive mindset, especially over sensitive topics like ethnicity or race. Week four of the Coffee Cup Christianity series, David McQueen provides context around Jeremiah 29:11. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”   This common verse is often quoted for its promise of prosperity and hope, which many equate to monetary prosperity. However, when you understand the full context in Jeremiah and about the original audience – the Jewish exiles in Babylon, you will gain a deeper perspective on prosperity. True prosperity comes from seeking and knowing God, rather than merely seeking material wealth or comfort. Genuine prosperity involves an ongoing pursuit of knowing God deeply. David McQueen focuses on Lamentations 3:22–23: “Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” for week three of the Coffee Cup Christianity series. This common verse will find most followers of Christ acknowledging God's faithfulness during favorable times but struggling to do so during times of sorrow and hardship. To best understand this verse, we must understand the context in which the Book of Lamentations was written – a period of immense suffering, destruction, and darkness following the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians. The author, Jeremiah the prophet, has seen affliction and felt abandoned by God. The verses of Lamentations express his anguish, but they also serve as a reminder of God's patience, steadfast love, and promises throughout Israel's history. Pastor McQueen encourages honesty in facing difficult emotions and wrestling with God, using Jeremiah's example. Faith begins with acknowledging feelings but doesn't end there. Faith calls one to remember God's goodness and promises, as exemplified by Jeremiah. In looking in the New Testament and the significance of Jesus' sacrifice, Jesus experienced darkness to bring light and hope. How you speak to yourself is important, we must recall God's goodness, and choose to focus on the cross, as it is a reminder of God's ultimate act of love and hope. David McQueen shares a personal experience, where he believed this verse would lead his team to victory but ended up facing failure, causing doubts about God's trustworthiness. David emphasizes the importance of understanding the immediate context of the verse and using the entirety of Scripture for accurate interpretation. He highlights the Apostle Paul's situation when writing this verse from prison, indicating that it's not a promise of guaranteed success or comfort, but rather a call to find contentment and strength in Christ regardless of circumstances. Pricing for serviced based businesses is such a dark art and many agency owners, coaches and consultants have had to learn it the hard way. But why should it be so hard? There should be more courses about this stuff out there teaching things like: What is a good price? How do you know what your competition is charging? Do you charge by day, by the person or by value? How do you write/build a proposal? What split is there between services and product? Premium and mass market? How does that work across territories? Do you charge differently online vs offline? These are the words of David McQueen, executive coach and public speaker, that he shared on LinkedIn over the summer. We thought it would be a great opportunity to talk about what such a course could do for people like him and what is it that might be stopping people from seeking out this kind of help. David McQueen is a speaker, coach and advisor who is passionate about leadership. Over the last thirty years he has honed his experience in leadership. "There's always the opportunity for you to be able to speak truth and speak better when you listen better. I think that there are because people just group listening as one [or] there's listening to learn or what we call information on this thing where you kind of just gathering all that information. There is critical listening, where you're listening to evaluate and analyse stuff to help you towards your actual thinking [and] empathetic thinking or therapeutical empathetic listening that people need to have. You could add to that active listening and all different forms. Those three for me are really important that first one I listened to learn. We can just hear where people are coming from" "I love to be able to let people loose. Even if, you've got a bit of a solution, let people loose and let them just work, just totally go and brainstorm and start thinking of different ways of approaching this. How do organisations have these really tough conversations? ... Let's be brave about that leadership ... I would always ask questions. I would always challenge people ... I always tried to give people the benefit of the doubt until they prove me wrong ... For me, it was about how do we use humour ... you're up against this wall of constant ignorance and wilful ignorance, I would give people the benefit of the doubt." After our quarterly monthly break from recording and we are jumping back behind the mics with a special relationship episode.  We got together with the playful power couple: Madeline (https://www.madelinemcqueen.com/) and David McQueen (https://www.davidmcqueen.co.uk/) to talk about how they have made love last (while having two children and running a business together) for thirty two years.  I’ve known Madeline and David for over ten years and they offered me invaluable guidance and advice on love and relationships in the years when I was dating.  They have always been intentionally open about talking about their relationship and sharing about the ups and downs, warts and all, of being in a long term relationship. They believe passionately that friendship in your relationship is key and that every relationship requires work to help it to thrive. They are also both coaches and so they bring a level of insight, self-awareness and a no-nonsense practical attitude to their relationship which you don’t often find in other couples.  They have so many pearls of wisdom to offer on how to make love last and so in this episode Vicki and I got to ask them about how they have made their love last for over thirty years and what advice they would give to others about how to cultivate a happy and healthy relationship.  As ever, when I speak to Madeline and David, I came away with so many gems and aha moments (and was squirming in my seat on a number of occasions too, as you’ll hear!). David McQueen is the co-founder of Q-Squared. He is an expert in leadership communication, workplace culture and presentation skills. He consults and speaks with senior leaders all over the country including, a certain Sir Richard Branson. We discuss the challenges for all minorities as they climb their professional careers in the UK but David pays particular attention to the challenges facing black professions. He sites that across 800 partners in the top 5 law firms in the UK only 4 are black. 3 of those 5 are not British born. Of the top 4 consultancies, EY, Deloitte, PWC and KPMG of 1500, only 27 are black. He says this is not about ticking a box, UK corporations have promised opportunity that for those that get on, work hard, they can do well but many have not followed through on their promise and are failing a lot of black and ethnic minorities. This is just such a fascinating conversation concerning everything from the fall out of events of recent months and back lives matter to everything else in between. A week ago, it'd be easy to dismiss foldable smartphones as a trend that never became a full-on fad. After all, Samsung's Galaxy Fold model, at nearly $2,000, famously broke for early reviewers, and the newly-launched $1,500 Motorola RAZR flip phone -- twice the cost of an iPhone 11 -- touts mostly lacklustre features, including a small battery and plastic screen.But Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip phone, announced Tuesday at a press event in San Francisco, could be the device that breathes new life into the buzzy concept that borrows heavily from designs of the past.The 6.7-inch smartphone folds into a square about half its size, with a small rectangular display on the front cover for notifications. It comes in three colours — purple, black and gold — and goes on sale Friday February 14 in select stores and online.At $1,380, the Z Flip is far from affordable, but with a new, sturdier design and almost as much computing power as the Samsung flagship smartphone, the company could be onto something."After years of complacency in the smartphone market, waiting for some design innovation, there is little doubt that foldable smartphones are set to become the next technology innovation trend," said David McQueen, research director at tech advisory firm ABI Research. "Despite the obvious and immediate issues with getting them to market -- notably high barriers to entry, extreme hardware innovation, seamless user experiences and current eye-wateringly high prices -- foldable displays are set to become an important form factor in future product portfolios bringing much needed innovation into device design."Beyond the nostalgia factor, there's a lot of appeal in a phone that shrinks in size and shuts close. At a time when smartphones light up and scream for us to grab them with each notification, snapping the device down is a refreshing change. (Like the RAZR, the Z Flip features a small display on the front so you can still see notifications come through if closed.)Upon first impression, the Z Flip is the clear standout in the emerging foldable phone wars. Unlike the RAZR's plastic display, the Z Flip features a layer of ultra-thin glass that opens and snaps into place with ease. It packs a powerful processor and decent battery life and does most of what you'd expect from a smartphone these days. The Galaxy Z Flip stays true to its name by adopting the clamshell design typical of flip phones (the Galaxy Fold folded vertically outward, similar to a book).The change to the hinge here is critical: It now features a small, internal brush-like system to push out debris and opens and snaps into place with ease. (Samsung claims it can open up to 200,000 times without damage.)The downside of making the hinge horizontal, however, is a noticeable crease that resides in the centre of the display, where users are often swiping and opening apps; you can both see it and feel it. It's a reminder that manufacturers are still trying to figure out how to approach the design. It's rumoured that Apple could be working on a foldable concept, as well.But for now, it's hard to get over the price -- something that will likely pigeonhole it as a niche product. It's only $20 less than the high-end Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, which boasts 5G capabilities, a super responsive touchscreen and an incredibly powerful set of cameras. Considering the Flip Z's price is $600 less than the Galaxy Fold, it signals Samsung is trying to figure out its place in the market.Another key factor in determining the price is materials; the original Fold was basically two thin smartphones sandwiched on top of each other."This time it's one smartphone cut in half, so there are some price savings to be had," said Ramon Llamas, a director at research firm IDC. "Samsung continues to see an opportunity to differentiate itself in an otherwise copycat market and still make some money off of it. David McQueen is a professional speaker. Some would describe him as a Motivational speaker, others a host/facilitator, and others will recognise him from his podcast or previous TV shows. However you'd describe him, he's an absolute expert when it comes to all things 'communication'!   David started his working life as an accountant, and, as a self-proclaimed 'proper geek', then transitioned to a second career in technology. In both of those careers he spawned a love for effective presenting and communications.   After leaving the corporate world, he went on to start his own company where he predominantly taught public speaking and coaching.
