On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with Evan Fox, founder and owner of Yeastie Boys Bagels. With eight locations around Los Angeles, the vibrant food truck is full of delicious New-York style LA bagels. Their creative combinations have fun names - mainly pop culture and music references - to go with them.    When Fox started Yeastie Boys Bagels in 2014, there were not a lot of bagel options in Los Angeles.  What started as a side project with a friend - experimenting with bagels in an LA apartment, and delivering them to tastemakers, mostly in the music scene, and posting funny bagel memes on Instagram – is now a thriving LA business.   “It's been pretty wild; I'm grateful and blessed to be here,” he says. “My whole thing for Yeastie Boys is, ‘How can I make something that people want to eat daily, that's a quick bagel, that's a classic that you'd get in a bodega in New York. … How can I take the old classics and make them more refined [and] more current?'”   Yeastie Boys is known for the New York style bagel. Fox's top three favorite bagels are sesame, egg and an egg everything bagel.    “New York style bagels are very plump, they have got a nice chew, they have a nice sweetness to it, usually from barley malt,” he explains. “They have a nice crust when you bite into it, but it's soft and chewy in the middle.”   Evan Fox shares the Yeastie Boys origin story, along with his personal bagel journey: from developing a love of bagels at a young age - it was his go-to after school snack in Arizona - to discovering NY bagels, when was a touring musician. Fox also talks about what makes a good bagel, playing with pop culture - they recently created a custom menu for a partnership with Netflix's “Nobody Wants This,” the bagel's place in the mainstream, and more.      Check out YeastieBoysBagels.com and follow @YeastieBoysBagels on Instagram.   For more from Taste Buds, subscribe on iTunes and YouTube, follow @TheDEBMethod on social media, and go to JewishJournal.com/podcasts.

Detroit is growing: More people, more coffee, and more affordable housing

Daily Detroit

Play Episode Listen Later May 15, 2025 26:29

Hey Detroit! We are back in our TechTown studio for your Daily Detroit, and on this Thursday, May 15th, 2025, the city is absolutely buzzing with news – from delicious new spots, to political shifts, to the city growing population for a second year in a row.  On today's show: Corktown Coffee & Bagel in Core City First up, Devon brought in a treat from the brand new Haraz Coffee in Corktown, which just had its soft opening. Located at 1501 Church Street (right off Michigan & Trumbull in a new parking deck), this Yemeni coffee shop is already impressing. Not to be outdone on the new-eats front, I shared my excitement about Bev's Bagels, the latest venture from James Beard-nominated Max Sussman. Tucked into a space on Grand River (south of Warren), Bev's offers an old-school diner counter feel but with amazing bagels.  Detroit's Growing Population & Development News The big headline? Detroit's population has grown for the second consecutive year, according to new U.S. Census estimates. This is the first time since 1957 the city has seen two straight years of growth, adding 7,000 residents and becoming the 26th largest city proper in America. Mayor Duggan credits reduced crime, more jobs, and new housing.  While positive news, there's much more work to do. We discuss the big pluses and what's ahead.  Speaking of development, the groundbreaking for Lee Plaza on West Grand Boulevard (in the Northwest Goldberg neighborhood) is a monumental step. This 100-year-old, long-vacant iconic eyesore is being transformed into 117 units of affordable senior housing, with rents capped at 30% of income. It's a complex project with 7-8 layers of financing, but it's a "jewel" being added outside of downtown. Political Tremors: 2026 Governor's Race Polls New polling for the 2026 Governor's race is turning heads. A Target Insyght poll shows Mayor Mike Duggan, running as an independent, with 48% overall support among Detroit voters (up 9 points since February). He's even leading 51-28 among Black voters in the city.  Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has slipped to 32%, and Republican Congressman John James is at just 3% with Detroit voters.  Although it's early, we get into it because it shows the former Mayor has more juice than some expected. Though it's kind of in line with what we predicted. What Do You Think? What are your favorite new spots in the city? Are you feeling the growth? And what's your take on these early political polls? Let us know!  Email us at dailydetroit@gmail.com or leave a voicemail at 313-789-3211. Thanks for tuning in, and remember — you are somebody.  Daily Detroit shares what to know and where to go in Detroit every day. In today's episode of the Truth Wanted, ObjectivelyDan and Jim Barrows jump into social media to separate the art from the artist, and are careful not to be echo chambers as they float through space to trigger a speciation event.James in NY has some thoughts about how social media can help with deconstruction. The process of deconstruction is not just one time and happens repeatedly. Jim mentions some YouTube programs that not only help him but also are entertaining. This can also be helpful when it is hard to leave some things behind, Dan describes. What kinds of things can be difficult to accept as true?Bagel in Canada wants to talk about separating the art from the artist and presents an example of a musician who did something awful yet still produces a great song. How can you separate the revenue stream from the artist? The thing that makes a person a moral monster is not necessarily their art. Knowing everything about every celebrity ever can give us some problems to wrestle with. How can you tell when the actual art is the problem? What if the cameraman of a series that you love comes out as a Nazi? Even bad people say and do good things on occasion. We can rephrase this as separating the science from the scientist.Caleb in WY wants to figure out how to not be an echo chamber and take the proper approach to find what is true. Dan draws off his experience to explain how helpful it is to use five different news sources for every story you find. Information is misreported on all sides and you must take an active attempt at absorbing information. Jim will surf different sites in incognito mode so he is not recognized. This will help prevent the information being tailored to you. The same article will have different headlines depending on the audience.  The hosts share other helpful tips: Never share an article on social media that you have not read yourself, paid subscriptions will generally give you better quality information, and look for news sources that expose the blind spots on the right and left. Dan in Canada has a thought about the commercialization of space travel and asks if people will have a speciation event. Jim confirms that when the environment changes, we will definitely see this take place, and Dan explains that evolution does not just stop. If you stay in space long enough, you can't return because of how it affects the body. How do you think humans will change if we were to colonize Mars?Kelley Laughlin, joins us to close out the show. We want the truth of the week: Name something that people worry about too much. Jim reminds us that all hardware and software suck. People make mistakes. How do you take something that's iconically local and make it feel authentic—everywhere? That's the challenge facing every regional brand trying to scale. When your name is practically synonymous with a place—like H&H is with New York City—growth isn't just about expansion. It's about staying true to what made you iconic in the first place. Today, I'm joined by Jay Rushin, CEO of H&H Bagels—a brand so New York it's practically a supporting character on Seinfeld and Sex and the City. Jay has been leading the charge to take this beloved local brand national, with over 70 franchises signed and new locations popping up from Boca Raton to Santa Monica. Leading the company since 2014, CEO Jay Rushin has re-imagined the H&H Bagels brand by growing the number of New York stores and launching the franchise model. Jay has deep familial ties to the H&H Bagels brand - his father-in-law acquired H&H Bagels in the late 1980s - and a passion for the brand's unique history and legacy. Rushin utilizes his skills gleaned from over twenty years in finance to lead his team in the growth of H&H Bagels. Behind every “yes” in the toy industry, there's a mountain of “no's,” countless hours of hustle, and more trial and error than most people expect. At one point, he came close to walking away from it all—until a single line from an episode of Bluey reminded him that making games was exactly what he was meant to do.In this episode Making It In The Toy Industry, I'm joined by the incredibly talented Jeremy Posner, owner of Shenanigans Toys and Games, the inventor behind hit games like Beagle or Bagel, Bears in Barrels, and Piggy Piggy. He's been named to the Mojo Nation 100 SIX times, won Game Innovator of the Year at the TAGIEs, and has worked with some of the biggest names in the toy industry like Hasbro, Mattel, and Spin Master. But here's the plot twist: it took Jeremy EIGHT years to meet his royalty goals. And that's after winning major awards and getting meetings with big companies right out the gate. You're gonna hear why just licensing a game doesn't mean you've made it, what really makes a game “sellable” to toy companies, and why most ideas just don't cut it. Jeremy also explained the real deal with royalties or advances, and how long it actually takes to see a check.  He even shared how he trained his brain to be more creative (yes, that's a thing!).Dreaming of creating the next game night hit or just curious what it really takes to make it in toys and games?Hit play and steal a few smart moves for your next big creative leap.Listen for these Important Moments! [00:03:07] - Despite early wins, including a TAGIE award and a background at Big Monster Toys, Jeremy didn't hit his financial goals from game licensing until eight years in. [00:11:17] - After Toy Fair, Jeremy reflects on the silence that often follows a pitch. He explains how learning why you're hearing “no” (and from whom) is key to improving your ideas and not losing steam.[00:23:00] - Around year four, Jeremy stopped “just creating” and started strategically designing evergreens. He audited his creative process, studied the brain, and trained himself to boost creative output daily.[00:33:04] - Jeremy tests tons of game ideas fast by building quick, minimum viable prototypes. He runs super short playtests to see what's worth developing and keep his creativity flowing.[00:40:35] - Near the end of the episode, Jeremy shares his dream of designing fan experiences for sports teams and creating original game shows, proving he's still dreaming big, even after major success in toys and games.Send The Toy Coach Fan Mail! In this raucous episode of the Opie Radio podcast, Opie broadcasts live from Long Island’s chilly shores, griping about a cold snap killing his tomato plants. Joined by Ron, fresh from an Atlanta wedding and Easter dad duties, they dive into a chaotic mix of topics: the Pope’s passing, wild speculation about J.D. Vance as the Antichrist, Nostradamus prophecies, and debates over the next Pope’s identity. The banter spirals into piping plovers shutting down beaches, sardines on pizza, and Marjorie Taylor Greene’s antics. They spar over AOC vs. Lauren Boebert’s bar appeal, rant about Trump’s cult, and obsess over the perfect bagel—everything or plain, with lox, capers, and red onion debates galore. From seal sightings and surf casting to shady music managers and Bozo the Clown connections, the episode careens through environmental gripes, school politics, and Ron’s creepy clown dreams. Expect unfiltered rants, beach vibes, and Opie’s grudging affection for Ron’s chaotic energy.
