I'm joined by fellow FRD Brotherhood member Ray Bayat. Ray founded NetCo Investments, Inc. along with Mitch Bayat in 2002. But if there's one thing you should know about Ray, it's his dedication to being an amazing Dad and husband, always striving to improve in every role he plays. Today's conversation is all about growth. Ray shares his journey growing up in Iran during the revolution, his family's sacrifices (especially his Dad, who was tough-as-nails), and how that experience molded him into a more understanding and evolved parent and loving husband.  Ray believes real growth happens when we're uncomfortable, and he's making sure his children learn that lesson early. Despite being teenagers, his kids have traveled to dozens of countries, exposing themselves to different cultures, ideas, and ways of life.  Ray also talks about how grateful he is for his amazing wife, Katrin. From parenting to business, she always pushes him to be better and has been invaluable in helping him achieve his goals and stay grounded. A Wide-Ranging Conversation Through… Make sure you add value to every interaction  Everyone is a work in progress Growing up during the Iran revolution  How like-minded men help you grow faster How a Tony Robbins event transformed Ray's marriage Supporting his son through grief A better way to deal with your kids' temper tantrums Choose her every day Raising brave adventurers  Ray's message to future FRD members Get the Full Show Notes Want access to the full show notes, including links to all resources mentioned during today's conversation? Go ahead, google Dad and you'll find Dad Bod, Dad Jokes, Dad Weed, etc. Culturally, it's a Homer Simpson mentality, and it's BS.   Our community is built for solid men. Men with range. Those who are badass, and know there's still more to learn, together.   Most guys find it hard to find “their crew.” Finding other committed men, who are successful in life, and want to put family first – these guys are rare. Is this you? In FRD, hundreds of men from all over the world show up for each other, to share resources and raise the bar of fatherhood (our core values) If you're reading this, you want to grow.  Podcasts are great, but guys… when you're ready to stop just listening to content, and want to JOIN the conversations – the FRD brotherhood is ready for you.   One more thing…  Has this podcast helped you? I found talking two Afghan social activist and human rights advocate Crystal Bayat incredibly cathartic - I think during the interview I even called it “medicinal.” I was thinking about why I chose to put it that way, and the best I can articulate it is that for many veterans of Afghanistan and many Afghans themselves, I think there a sort of “trauma bond” has formed - a very intimate relationship forged in the wake of a withdrawal that has been forgotten as quickly as it chaotically occurred. Talking with Crystal was, in some ways, like returning to the scene of the crime. While I was listening to her, it struck me how rarely we hear Americans speak as passionately, sincerely and fervently about freedom and democracy. Crystal truly represents the pro-American, young, educated Afghan that understands and appreciates American efforts – and has been betrayed even more by our withdrawl.Crystal herself is a beneficiary of our war effort. Born in 1997, she spent her life coming of age while American troops were on the ground. To hear her talk about the freedom - personal social and political - that she experienced because of our war in Afghanistan is a necessary reminder that in 20 years of war America enabled a generation of Afghans to come of age with possibilities and optimism unknown to previous generations. Crystal is clear eyed and resolute about the threats still present in Afghanistan. Crystal is forthcoming about everything from the Taliban's assassination attempt of her to an analysis of the multiple foreign influences still gestating, fomenting and developing new threats inside Afghanistan. It is a conversation, I think, that that every American should listen to. Crystal pulls no punches and identifying the culprits responsible for Afghanistan's collapse. As a member of the Loy Jerga, Crystal was present at the Doha peace talks - she is an activist but not an outsider. She has intimate knowledge and first-hand experience of the inner workings of the Ghani government which makes for an incredibly compelling insightful conversation. I think any one who cares about Afghanistan will deeply appreciate this episode. And anyone who wants to know why they should care about Afghanistan deserves the answers Crystal offers.Learn more about Crystal here.

In this episode, he talks about his new book, Revolutionary Life: The Everyday of the Arab Spring, published by Harvard University Press in 2021. In the book, Asef looks at how the working class, women, and other marginalized groups were vital to the Arab Uprisings. Focusing on Tunisia and Egypt, he shows how the uprisings changed society for millions of people in the region.

Seamlessly blending field research, on-the-ground interviews, and social theory, Asef Bayat shows how the practice of everyday life in Egypt and Tunisia was fundamentally altered by revolutionary activity. Women, young adults, the very poor, and members of the underground queer community can credit the Arab Spring with steps toward equality and freedom. In Bayat's telling in Revolutionary Life: The Everyday of the Arab Spring (Harvard University Press, 2021), the Arab Spring emerges as a paradigmatic case of “refolution”―revolution that engenders reform rather than radical change. Both a detailed study and a moving appeal, Revolutionary Life identifies the social gains that were won through resistance. Ep.07 Soy Sauce Nation Part 2 with Sima Safavi-Bayat & Sadie Maeda In June of 2021, Soy Sauce Nation, an Asian snowboard community focused on bringing more inclusivity into snowboarding and beyond hosted the first ever "Soy Sauce Nation'als" event at Timberline Resort at Mt. Hood, Oregon. Kim chats with her friends and colleagues Sima Safavi-Bayat and Sadie Maeda, who she attended the event with. They reflect on their different experiences growing in America, how snowboarding and skateboarding came to be a huge part of their lives and how the action sports/skate/snow industry can move forward together. About Sima Safavi-Bayat: Sima Safavi-Bayat (she/her) is currently the Skateboarding Inclusivity Cooperate (S.I.C.) Program Manager for Skate Like a Girl and has played various other roles within the organization since 2014. She grew up in a small town in Washington where she first was introduced to snowboarding and skateboarding. Working in shops in her late-teens and early 20s, Sima had a one-foot-in-one-foot-out presence in the snow industry. Being an ambiguous brown gal (Indonesian and Persian), Sima had a hard time seeing herself in the "scenes" she was in. She is an open book who wears her experiences and emotions on her sleeve and sticks to the idea that the biggest impact you have is within your own community. Sima hopes that having these conversations, the sad, the good, the bad and the laughs, help others feel more comfortable with themselves and opens up the door, even just a crack, for others to also be able to express and communicate their experiences and feelings. About Sadie Maeda: Sadie (she/her) is a marketing professional who has dedicated her career to working behind the scenes to create more opportunities for women in the action sports industry. She is deeply passionate about connecting, empowering, and creating a larger sense of community for women in a male-dominated industry. She's worked with brands such as Nikita Clothing, MAHFIA.TV, Slmbr Party, Yobeat, Launch Snowboards, and more. About the Show: Squeezing the Juice is a podcast and webinar series hosted by Kim Woozy & Ashley Masters featuring conversations with experts in skateboarding, fitness, nutrition, physical and mental health, creative culture and business. Our goal is to inspire, educate and empower our community by sharing our collective experiences, stories and backgrounds. Discover how to be the best version of you...with us!

Our guest this week on the Mobility Standard podcast was Sam Bayat, founder of Bayat Legal Services, one of the Middle East's foremost investment migration firms. Sam has been active in the investment migration market since the very beginning and we took the opportunity to raise a number of questions best answered with the benefit of three decades of hindsight.Though he's been nearly three decades in the UAE, Sam's investment migration adventure began in Montreal. That's an origin he shares with many of his peers: Why is it that so many of those company founders who today are big names in the investment migration market all got their start in Montreal? In other words, why is Montreal, in particular, the birthplace of so many leading investment migration firms?Sam says he's concerned that the industry as a whole doesn't have adequate “representation or a more active think-tank to give our perspective on different issues.” But isn't that what the IMC is doing? Well, Sam has a different take on that and new ideas around what needs to change in investment migration industry associations for them to be truly effective, ideas on which he elaborated during the show. He also explained why he has decided not to join any industry associations for the moment.“We are more concerned with setting up seminars and talking among ourselves rather than talking to people who are not part of our industry. [...] If Henley and Arton would agree to work together to represent the interests of the industry, and if there were one entity, then I would be a member."Sam is closely involved in the promotion of North Macedonian citizenship by investment throughout the MENA region. Considering the conspicuous absence of any official mention of the program, we asked him whether we can be confident that there is a government-sanctioned EUR 200,000 citizenship by investment program in North Macedonia. Why is the government not saying anything?“We have received the first ten approvals, and two of them are my clients," Sam responds. "[…] The biggest problem the promoters of this program have is, basically, the government's attitude,” he adds, pointing out that the government has been hesitant to adopt best-practice recommendations from seasoned CBI advisors. “It's Eastern Europe, things are not moving fast and they are not really inclined to change.” Nonetheless, he says he believes that once we see the first several citizenships formally granted, the government of North Macedonia is likely to also become more proactive in their promotion of the program.Timestamps:02:37 - Why did it all start in Montreal?18:42 - Industry representation and the role of associations like the IMC37:03 - Updates on citizenship by investment in North Macedonia
