"The good news for beer is beer is a non-partisan issue." So proclaims this week's podcast guest, Brian Crawford, President and CEO of The Beer Institute, a Washington DC based trade association representing the interests of the industry primarily at the federal level. In our conversation we talk about the growth of non-alcoholic beer, including how BI views the category as a nascent one within the overall industry, with health habits and drinking preferences quickly evolving. We then dive into the hemp-derived beverage market, which has really taken off since the 2018 Farm Bill, with Brian giving his thoughts on it from the POV of the beer industry at large. Lastly, we talk about some of the Beer Institute's legislative priorities, which include a new program aimed at making draft beer more accessible by providing tax credits to all those who serve it. We close out our discussion with Brian sharing some great info on how people can get involved in advocating for beer in all its forms with their local representatives.Mentioned in this episode:The Beer Institute

Dan Kopman knows a thing or two about beer. Some of you may recognize the name Daniel Kopman. If you don't know his name, you undoubtedly know some of his work. Currently, Kopman is a Professor and Lecturer at American University's Kogod School of Business and, likely more notable to us beer nerds, a Senior Policy Advisor for the World Brewing Alliance. Previously he was the co-founder and CEO of Schlafly Beer in St. Louis, CEO of Heavy Seas, voting member of the Beer Institute, and board member of the Brewers Association. What is the World Brewing Alliance? In short, they're the trade association for trade associations. Over 70% of the world's beer production is represented by the WBA from small brewers to multinational conglomerates. Their mission is to corporate social responsibility, sustainability, responsible marketing practices, and invocation in the brewing sector. On the other side of things, they represent brewers to organizations like the UN and the World Health Organization. Bringing the two together their goal is for brewers to be responsible with their brewing and for health organizations to realize and support the cultural and economic benefits that brewers bring.Low alcohol, no alcohol, and changing trends in drinkingWe've talked about NA beer a good bit on the show and I think most of us know that lower alcohol beers are gaining popularity. Studies show younger generations are being more responsible in their consumption and aren't looking for a 15% stout. As the NA sector continues to grow, there are still plenty of people that will still want to grab a beer with some booze in it. Despite the growth we've seen in NA beer in America, our market is still way behind many other countries. Through technological and scientific advances more brewers are now offering high quality low and no alcohol beer. We've still got plenty of room to grow in this sector. Brewing around the worldCraft beer is booming in many places you may not think of. There's a growing scene in South Africa and you've probably enjoyed some South African hops in your hazy IPA. The scene in India is up and coming as well. Much like out locally sourced grains, hops, and fruits there's plenty of unique ingredients in these countries. Expanding the offerings of grains, hops, and other ingredients in local markets around the world is a boost for the environment as well as local economies. We got deep into some amazing topics this week. We enjoyed it and hope you do, too. Let us know. Cheers! Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Anheuser-Busch Lost Over $1 Billion In Revenue After Dylan Mulvaney Partnership

Real News Now Podcast

Anheuser-Busch, the parent company of Bud Light, is believed to have experienced a significant decrease in sales revenue, with estimates projecting over a billion dollar loss. This steep descent is reportedly linked to the company's collaboration with Dylan Mulvaney, a trans person who quickly became a divisive figure. Analysis of company data unveiled a plunge in the organic revenue of Anheuser-Busch by $1.4 billion in North America in the past year, as reported by reliable sources. The drop in sales revenue has been primarily attributed to the controversial marketing alliance with Mulvaney. Although perceived as strong in other global markets, Anheuser-Busch's US business performance appears to have taken a hit. In a recent company report, the narrative touched on a constrained growth situation largely due to the underperformance of its American sector. The report dedicated significant focus to Bud Light, revealing a 17.3% decline in the beer's revenue with sales to retailers (STRs) taking a 12.1% hit on account of volume decrease. The report also indicated a drop in sales to wholesalers (STWs) by 16.1%. Interestingly, stagnation in deliveries was found to be more notable compared to stock depletion towards the year-end. The beverage conglomerate recognized a lukewarm resurgence in its American beer sales. Notably, this recovery has been slow-paced. The FY23 beer sector reportedly holds its own, with an upward trend in its volumes, and beer actually gaining a greater share in the total alcohol value across off-premise outlets, as per Circana, a leading industry data analysis tool. The report conceded to a gradual improvement in Anheuser-Busch's beer market share from May last year until December. Unfortunately, while their flagship brands performed below expectations, 'above core beer megabrands' logged growth throughout the year. This indicates that not all aspects of Anheuser-Busch's operations were hampered by the decision to collaborate with Mulvaney. The sales downturn of Bud Light significantly coincided with the company's decision to partner with Mulvaney. After the partnership, there was a noteworthy right-leaning call for the company to tender an apology. The fallout spread throughout Anheuser-Busch, leading to a restructuring exercise that reportedly saw hundreds of staffers being laid off and a dismantling of their top marketing team. Embedded in this backlash against the partnership with Mulvaney was Bud Light's involvement in a very public legal challenge. The dispute centered on whether the promotion of alcohol, including beer, by Mulvaney met the standards set by the alcohol industry, given his popularity amongst younger audiences on social media. Questions began to arise, particularly around whether these promotional efforts were inadvertently targeting underage consumers. Not only are such marketing strategies generally frowned upon, but they are in direct violation of the guidelines and ethical norms of the beverage industry, creating potential legal and reputational issues for the company. Intriguingly, two prominent members of the Senate Commerce Committee, U.S. Senators Ted Cruz, from Texas, and Marsha Blackburn, from Tennessee submitted a formal request on May 17, 2023. This letter solicited a thorough examination by the self-regulating entity within the beer industry, the Beer Institute, investigating whether Bud Light was indeed indirectly marketing to minors through its association with Mulvaney. Following this, there were comprehensive revisions of the beer industry's Advertising and Marketing Code. Updated policies for social media influencers were also put in place. These changes reflected a larger concern in the beer industry about the responsible use of social media influencers for marketing purposes. Of the new norms outlined, the guidelines now prescribe that social media advertisements can only be placed where a minimum of 73.8% of the audience is of drinking age – a regulation that echoes the standards required for conventional adverts. Additionally, the guidelines now mandated the leveraging of 'age-gating measures' if such features are available. All these updates point to an increasing realization within the industry about the need for responsible advertising, and the enforcement of stricter measures to ensure that content is accessed only by the appropriate age demographic. This drives the industry towards a more ethical and responsible marketing approach which, in turn, protects the image of the industry and its constituents. The experience of Anheuser-Busch in its partnership with Dylan Mulvaney demonstrates how critical it is for businesses to take into account the perceptions and expectations of their key target demographic. This is especially the case when making decisions about marketing and partnerships, as these have a direct bearing on the brand image and financial health. While the company hoped to tap into new demographics and customer bases with the partnership, the backlash demonstrates that a strategic misstep in understanding the existing customer base can have a sizable impact on a brand's image and its financial bottom line. Moving forward, the lessons from Anheuser-Busch's experience serve as a wake-up call for the alcoholic beverage industry. The situation highlights the need for continued vigilance and adaptability in marketing efforts. It reminds us that attentive consumer and market analysis are crucial for aligning marketing strategies with consumer expectations and industry standards. Welcome to this special episode of Sightlines, part of Good Beer Hunting’s continued coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic. I’m Bryan Roth. Parts of the country are in some kind of encouraged self-isolation—if not lockdown in some locations—and in many states, bars, restaurants, and breweries have been told by governments to shutter on-site sales and restrict business to takeout or delivery services. Bottom lines are suffering as cash flow dwindles with people sheltering in homes, spending money on extra groceries, and small businesses await help from elected officials to see them through this time. Not all breweries are hurting equally, however, as packaged beer flies off the shelves in stores as drinkers stock up, and kegs sit untapped. All this happened in a matter of days. So when we hear this is not going to be a short blip, the attention of business owners and economists has shifted to what all this means with short-term gains versus long-term solutions. And in this episode, we’re going to school to learn more about what this all means, and how and why breweries are eyeing all the scenarios in between. It’s not as simple as supply and demand. Our three guests include John Dantzler, CEO and co-founder of New York City's Torch & Crown Brewing Company—his background is in finance having worked for Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, and Barclays Investment Bank before entering the beer world. And also Scott Metzger, general manager of Massachusetts' Wormtown Brewery, and co-founder of San Antonio's Freetail Brewing. Scott's background is in economics, having worked as an economist at Valero Energy Corporation and the University of Texas-San Antonio. But we start with another economist, Michael Uhrich, former chief economist of the Beer Institute, and current founder and chief economist of Seventh point Analytic, a data-driven consulting company. This is Sightlines. Listen in.

The pilgrims on the Mayflower may have been the first Americans to create beer policy when the beer supplies, which was their only source of hydration, ran low and forced them to land short of warmer lattitudes. During the US Civil War, immigrant and first-generation American brewers demonstrated their patriotism by forming one of the first trade organizations, the US Brewer’s Association. Since then, beer policy has influenced American culture from World Wars, prohibition, a three tier system, legalization of homebrewing, trade tariffs and more. In the mid 80s, the US Brewer’s Assocation evolved into the Beer Institute and has been advocating for sound policy for the three hundred billion dollar industry ever since. Love it or hate it, policy and politics affects our daily lives in very complicated, even subtle ways. I recommend that the next time you go to Washington D.C. and meet with your representative, meet them at a bar and offer them a beer. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jeremy-storton/message

Craft Beer News – 11/30/18MillerCoors, Pabst settle lawsuit over brewing contract•MillerCoors and Pabst Brewing settled a lawsuit Wednesday in which Pabst claimed the bigger brewer lied about its ability to continue brewing Pabst's beers to put that company out of business.•"We have reached an amicable settlement in the case and are pleased to resolve all outstanding issues with Pabst," MillerCoors said in a statement. Settlement details were not disclosed.•Since 1999, Chicago-based MillerCoors has made and shipped nearly all of Pabst's beers, which include Pabst Blue Ribbon, Old Milwaukee, Lone Star and Schlitz. Pabst's lawyers argued in the company's 2016 lawsuit that MillerCoors worried that Pabst would cut into its market share and devised a plan to stop brewing for the smaller competitor. MillerCoors' attorneys called Pabst's claim a conspiracy theory and said the company was simply deciding what makes economic sense.•The agreement between MillerCoors and Pabst, which was founded in Milwaukee in 1844 but is now headquartered in Los Angeles, expires in 2020 but provides for two possible five-year extensions. The companies disagreed on how the extensions were to be negotiated: MillerCoors argued it had sole discretion to determine whether it can continue brewing for Pabst, whereas Pabst said the companies must work "in good faith" to find a solution if Pabst wanted to extend the agreement but MillerCoors lacked capacity.•However, Pabst said internal documents from MillerCoors showed the company was worried about competition from Pabst and went as far as hiring a consultant to find a way to get out of the brewing agreement.•Pabst needs 4 million to 4.5 million barrels brewed annually and claims MillerCoors is its only option. Pabst's lawsuit sought more than $400 million in damages and a court order for MillerCoors to honor its contract.•MillerCoors and Anheuser-Busch, which have the biggest U.S. market share at 24.8 percent and 41.6 percent, respectively, have been losing business to smaller independent brewers, imports, and wine and spirits in recent years, according to the Brewers Association, a U.S.-based trade group. Overall U.S. beer sales have declined, with shipments down from 213.1 million barrels in 2008 to 204.2 million in 2017, according to the association.Trillium Labor Practices, Brewing Methods QuestionedMassachusetts craft beer maker Trillium Brewing Company’s labor practices and brewing methods are under scrutiny after accusations were lodged last week by a self-described former employee in an online beer forum.According to the former employee, who used the name “Abagofit” in a Beer Advocate forum, Trillium required its retail employees to reapply for jobs that they already held prior to last month’s opening of the company’s new brewery, taproom and restaurant in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood. The ex-worker wrote that the base compensation for employees who had worked for more than three years at the brewery was cut from $8 an hour to $5 an hour to “work the exact same job across the street.”“We apologize that this has caused any of our employees, customers or friends to doubt, in any way, the integrity of Trillium or their ongoing support of us,” the company said. “We are fortunate that we’ve assembled such a talented team and remain committed to brewing exceptional beer that we can share with our family, friends, and customers.”Since the issues were raised last week, customers have left scathing comments on social media posts advertising new release beers priced at as much as $22.20 a 4-pack. One commenter shared a photoshopped label of Trillium’s “Cutting Tiles” double IPA with the name changed to “Cutting Wages.”Staff pay wasn’t the only issue raised in the Beer Advocate forum. The former employee also accused Trillium of cutting corners in the brewing process, including pouring tequila into kegs of a beer and promoting the beer as being barrel-aged to consumers. The commenter also claimed that management instructed workers to lie to customers about the beer’s origins and later tell consumers that the tequila flavor was “brewers magic.”“They straight up dumped tequila into the kegs,” the commenter wrote. “I’m no lawyer, but I know that is illegal.”Trillium has yet to address those allegations.People Moves: Ex-New Belgium Brewmaster Joins Melvin’s BoardMelvin Brewing Adds Peter Bouckaert to BoardFormer New Belgium brewmaster Peter Bouckaert has joined Wyoming-based Melvin Brewing’s board of directors, according to Forbes.Bouckaert — who left New Belgium after more than two decades to join Purpose Brewing and Cellars last May — told the outlet that he approached Melvin founder Jeremy Tofte at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival to discuss the company’s growth and to learn about its response to allegations that an employee had groped a server at another brewery in Bellingham, Washington, earlier this year. That employee — who was suspended, sent to sexual harassment training and given drug addiction treatment — is no longer with the company.Bouckaert’s addition to Melvin’s board follows the exit of sales director Ted Whitney, who departed the fast-growing Wyoming craft brewery for a similar sales role with Nug, a California-based cannabis company that sells edibles, flowers, concentrates, seeds and more.As US Beer Shipments Decline, Off-Premise Sales Remain FlatShipments of domestically brewed beer are down about 2.9 percent, according to the Beer Institute, but year-to-date volume sales at off-premise retailers are still basically flat.Dwindling sales of domestic premium beers drove much of the declines, as volume sales of those products were down 5 percent during the period.Picking up some of that lost volume were imported beers. Despite modest growth for the craft category as a whole, volume sales for some of the country’s largest craft breweries – including New Belgium, Gambrinus, Craft Brew Alliance and Deschutes – were all in decline during the period.Nevertheless, other top-ranked craft beer companies are bucking category-wide trends. Founders Brewing, Stone Brewing, Canarchy Craft Brewery Collective, Firestone Walker, Dogfish Head and New Glarus Brewing were all up double-digits.Among craft beer styles, IPAs are still the largest product type in the category, with dollar sales up 12.8 percent.Sales of craft golden ales and “other pale lagers” are also still on the rise – both categories were up 13.5 percent and 52.9 percent, albeit on smaller volume bases.Stories courtesy of Brewbound (https://www.brewbound.com/) and CNBC (https://www.cnbc.com/Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel.
