Clare Green Councillor Admits Red Tape In Farming Sector Must Be Reduced

Clare's Green Party councillor admits the level of red tape facing farmers must be reduced if the sector is to survive into the future. The local authority has formally given its support to the Irish Farmers' Assocation's 'Enough is Enough' campaign at a special meeting this week. Farmers' frustration was the subject of discussion at Áras Chontae an Chláir this week as members of Clare County Council met with IFA representatives. The meeting heard that 12,000 people in Clare are employed within the agricultural sector in some way, representing 20% of the county's working population. With an estimated 508,000 acres of farm land in the county, agriculture contributes over €1 billion to the local economy annually, according to IFA figures. Many of those in attendance at this week's meeting spoke of the challenges farmers are having in doing their time and labour intensive work, while also keeping up with mounting paperwork and bureaucracy. Kilrush Fine Gael Councillor and small farmer Gabriel Keating says those working in the sector need to know they'll be given sufficient income support to justify the intensive "bookwork" involved in various schemes. Taking its lead from its European counterparts, the Irish Farmers' Association has recently launched its 'Enough is Enough' campaign, which questions the role of EU policy in Irish agriculture. Clare County Council has officially endorsed the campaign which is seeking a "fundamental reset of how farm policy is devised and implemented both at the EU and in Ireland". A consistent theme in recent European protests against the introduction of the Nature Restoration law has been the claim that an EU "green agenda" is making farming less attractive. The average age of a farmer in Clare is now 59, and Lahinch Green Party Councillor Liam Grant says the sector must become less about bureaucracy if young people are to be encouraged to pursue a career in farming. Feakle native Stephen Walsh, who was elected Clare County Chair of the IFA last month, says the Government can't plan for the future of the agricultural sector, without listening to farmers' concerns.

Sheldon Ocker reflects on more than four decades of being a sportswriter in northeast Ohio with his customary wit and dry sense of humor. He takes into the clubhouse and behind the scenes during his 33 seasons of covering Major League Baseball in Cleveland for the Akron Beacon Journal. The Hall of Fame writer shares anecdotes from when the then-Indians were miserable in the 1980s and from when they morphed into memorable mashers in the '90s. Hear about the time Albert Belle raced Ocker in their rental cars, about Manny Ramirez asking him for a $60,000 loan, and about what pitch call Jose Mesa shook off in the ninth inning of Game 7 of the 1997 World Series. Sheldon also has some great tales from his 10 years of covering the NBA as a Cavaliers beat reporter in the 1970s. His story about a day spent with infamous Cavs owner Ted Stepien is one of the best we've heard in nearly 70 episodes.   Ocker was honored with the J.G. Taylor Spink Award for meritorious contributions to baseball writing. He was presented with that award in July 2018 at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum's induction in Cooperstown, N.Y. Besides his stellar reporting, Ocker was known for rarely taking a day off during a season when he covered baseball from 1981 until his retirement after the 2013 season. Sheldon was named the Ohio Sports Writer of the Year in 1997 and 2000 by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. This is the first in a series of interviews with headteachers and former heads talking about Ofsted (the Office for Standards in Education - England's schools inspectorate). Rebecca Leek is an experienced strategic leader who has worked across a wide range of settings and organisations, and she's currently the Executive Director of the Suffolk Primary Headteachers' Assocation. She has been a headteacher, executive headteacher, chief executive, a teacher and a Senco, and is a veteran of no fewer than 14 Ofsted inspections. She is a systems thinker, an innovator, and has been described as 'a harbinger of light'. She is increasingly in demand as a speaker, trainer and writer and brings with her a wealth of knowledge and insight from her involvement in a number of sectors including the arts, social enterprise, communications, permaculture and education. Rebecca describes herself as a holistic leader and is interested in systems and governance, belonging, and spiritual sustenance within schools. As we will hear several times in this conversation, Rebecca's practice as a permaculturist informs much of what she does, and in particular the principles of valuing diversity and what happens at the margins. Maria and Tara are joined by our guest Monica Romig Green for a conversation about how power works in the spiritual direction and supervision relationships. A lively discussion that has our hosts thinking about power from a fresh angle, this conversation is full of new awareness—and even some discomfort—about all the ways power shows up in these holy spaces. Together they explore how power is more than—and not what!—we think it is. Monica Romig Green is spiritual director, writer, speaker, and retreat leader. She has been giving spiritual direction since 2003, and is passionate about creativity and the arts, and teaches on improvisation, and creativity. She offers original interactive spiritual retreats called Play Without Ceasing (www.playwithoutceasing.com) which combine the concepts of theatrical improvisation and spiritual formation to help participants encounter Christ and His Body with renewed joy and wonder. A breast cancer survivor, she also served as staff and adjunct faculty at Biola University. As the facilitator for Biola's Center for Spiritual Renewal, she supervised 75 spiritual directors and oversaw all community-building events at Biola's Institute for Spiritual Formation. A native of Southern California, she currently lives in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, where she is a candidate to ordination in the Anglican Church of Canada with her husband, Matthew, and rescue Chihuahua, Gomez.
