However, the traditional wood supply chain is fraught with inefficiencies and environmental concerns. Currently, the U.S. consumes about 60 billion board feet of lumber annually, and a staggering 58% of this could potentially be replaced with reclaimed wood. Yet, less than 1% of wood used today is recycled. This presents a massive opportunity for Cambium to step in and make a significant impact.Ben explains that the wood industry often relies on virgin timber, which can lead to deforestation and other unsustainable practices. Cambium aims to substitute this with salvaged wood—material that is currently wasted but can be repurposed. The company focuses on three main sources of reclaimed wood: unmanaged urban forests, deconstructed buildings, and biomass from forest management practices aimed at reducing fire hazards.Cambium's mission is to simplify the use of waste materials at scale. To achieve this, the company is building a robust supply chain platform that connects large buyers—such as architects, builders, and furniture manufacturers—with reclaimed wood sources. Some key technological components of Cambium's approach:* Supply Chain Management: Cambium is developing technology to streamline the logistics of sourcing, moving, and processing reclaimed wood. This includes tools for lumber and sawmill industries to manage their inventory and capture waste wood effectively.* Data Analytics: By creating a data layer that tracks material movement through the supply chain, Cambium can provide live carbon reporting. This transparency allows stakeholders to make informed decisions about sourcing and sustainability.* Local Processing: One of the critical innovations is the focus on local processing of reclaimed wood. By reducing the distance wood travels—often from thousands of miles to just 20 miles—Cambium minimizes carbon emissions associated with transportation.* Circular Economy: Cambium emphasizes full circularity in its operations. The company not only aims to reuse wood but also reinvests in new tree planting initiatives, ensuring that the cycle of sustainability continues.Cambium has achieved several significant milestones since its inception, including a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised $18,000 by selling cutting boards made from reclaimed wood. The company has also received grants to explore the potential of urban wood waste and has begun processing millions of board feet of material from waste streams.Looking ahead, Cambium plans to scale its operations nationally, focusing on expanding its supply chains and enhancing its technology platform. Ben emphasizes the importance of internal processes and effective communication as the company grows, ensuring that they can maintain high standards of sustainability and efficiency. To learn more about Cambium, visit https://cambiumcarbon.com/. 60 billion board feet of wood products are used in the U.S. every year, a majority produced by fresh logging and shipped from across the globe, while simultaneously, millions of tons of local wood waste ends up in landfills off-gassing carbon as it rots. But that inefficiency could rapidly change thanks to Cambium and its CEO and co-founder, Ben Christensen, who are revolutionizing lumber supply chains with their Carbon Smart Wood™ and Traece operating system. Cambium reclaims fallen or removed trees that would typically end up in landfills and turns them into a locally sourced, carbon negative material that could potentially cut global carbon emissions by 4%. The firm is also using new technology to better track the trees during the supply chain process, increasing transparency, traceability, and sustainability. Cambium is also just getting started, partnering with mega brands like Microsoft and Patagonia in recent years and continuing to develop their clean technology and expand their markets. Ben Christensen is an accomplished ultra marathon runner, so it's probably fitting that the company he runs is built with long-haul sustainability and scalability in mind. Surrounded by forests and the outdoors as a child, Ben went to Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies to pursue his passion, and it was there that the idea for Cambium first took root. Not long after, Ben and his co-founder, Theo Hooker, a childhood friend and fellow ultra marathon runner, were racing to transform waste wood into valuable building materials. Hear Ben share how his love for the outdoors turned into a revolutionary sustainable materials startup, why wood waste is such a massive problem (and also a potential market), and what carbon smart wood means for the future of lumber, supply chains, and our planet. Landfills receive millions of tons of wood waste every year. Most of the waste can be recycled and repurposed; however, the lack of infrastructure in this sector means that the useful material doesn't always reach the right people. Today, we're diving into the future of sustainable wood sourcing with a true innovator: Ben Christensen, CEO and Co-Founder of Cambium Carbon, who was recognized by Forbes 30 under 30 for his team's social impact. Ben holds a Master's of Environmental Management from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Growing up in a woodshop with a carpenter father, it wasn't until he was in grad school that he realized the massive problem of urban wood waste. He knew there was an opportunity to create change, leading him to start Cambium Carbon. Cambium Carbon makes it easy for large companies to source materials locally and use waste-to-value materials, primarily focusing on wood. He established the company to combat climate change and revitalize communities. In this episode, we'll explore Ben's journey, Cambium Carbon's mission, and the role of the circular economy in combating climate change. Prepare to be inspired by Ben's commitment to tackling urban wood waste! Follow us on Instagram: @someonelikeyoupodcast
How can we build better supply chains for the built world? When it comes to the inconceivably vast amount of wood we use in our buildings, one “simple” way is to use less virgin material and use more wood that would otherwise not make it to market. Instead it would be destined to decompose and emit its carbon into the sky. What if, instead, the forgotten trees were salvaged and turned into valuable, usable lumber? This is a big idea whose time has come. Still, having a powerful idea is only the first step. Making it happen in the real world is the other side of the story. Starting with a focus on a smarter, more transparent wood supply chain, the ambitious team at Cambium Carbon are making powerful change happen in the human side of the wood ecosystem in the AEC. Their work is a key support for firms committed to sustainability. Join Kristof in a thoughtful conversation with Ben Christensen to learn more about what Ben and his team are doing to find wood impacted by the four Ds: disease, decay, disaster, and development and keep it out of landfills. Instead of landfills the wood goes back into the built world for generations to come. The company Living Carbon was mentioned during this episode as an interesting website to check out!Ben ChristensenBen, a Forbes 30 Under 30 lister and TedX speaker, is a thought-leader and industry expert. He is the CEO and Co-founder of Cambium, a climate-tech start-up backed by Joe Tsai, Steve Case, and many others. By working with cities to divert wood waste, local manufacturers to create sustainable products, and demand partners for offtake they are creating a new regenerative supply chain for urban wood. Ben loves to share his expertise on topics like circular economies, climate tech, leadership, and building teams. If you're not in construction or in the middle of a renovation, you might not think much about wood waste but in 2018 alone landfills in the US received 12.2 million tons of wood. Most of this is useful material that could be reused, but the lack of infrastructure means the wasted wood can't always reach the developers, woodworkers, and creators who need it. This week on Found, we're talking to a founder who has a SaaS solution for this broken supply chain. Then we reinvest in the forests where we see that salvage wood comes from. We have a 15% tree planting commitment. We work with many amazing local planting organizations, and anytime we sell the table or wood product or flooring, we put that directly back into community planting. The founders of Cambium Carbon, CEO Ben Christensen and CFO Marisa Repka, explain how they salvage wood from the 36 million trees that fall each year in American cities to create a hyper-local lumber supply chain. Currently, most of those fallen trees are mulched, burned or landfilled, all of which contributes to global warming. The company's Carbon Smart Wood is sourced from downed trees — also referred to as “urban wood” — and it can be used in furniture and buildings in place of trees from clear-cutting operations. They also dedicate 15% of their revenue to replant new trees, which provides urban green cover. Cambium Carbon is a social enterprise that has organised an alternative, thoroughly tracked wood supply chain for designers, architects and builders while helping to preserve local sawmills and the jobs they provide. Their Traece wood tracking system, which allows customers to learn where the wood in their home or office came from, enables a new level of accountability and storytelling in wood products. We also discuss the potential to apply their strategies to other commodities. Find out more about Cambium Carbon at https://cambiumcarbon.com/.

If a tree falls in a city, but no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Cities across the U.S. are losing their urban canopy. In fact, more trees fall in cities than in our national forests. (Roughly 46 million tons of wood and biomass waste!) Most of the wood that comes down is either abandoned in people's yards, sent to a landfill or ends up in a burn pile. Ben Christensen is the CEO and founder of Cambium Carbon; a company focused on addressing urban wood waste. Cambium Carbon imagines a future that creates green jobs, supports local economies, and fights climate change. This week Ben sits down with WSTP to chat about the importance of greenery in urban areas, the threat of the Emerald Ash Borer, carbon smart wood, and local community investment. With that, we'll leave you with one final thought: Earth Day is this week. In honor of Cambium Carbon (or maybe just in honor of WSTP . . .), go hug a tree!

Ben Christensen is a western lifestyle photographer. In his work, Ben aims to capture the simplicity of the American West and everything that comes with it. This often means drawing on the sentiment depicted in the classic 60s and 70s western films Ben grew up with. He says that living his own western, and doing so as authentically as possible, is both the personal and professional goal. “I woke up one morning and thought, why wait for Hollywood to make a western like they used to when I know exactly what needs to be done?” So, with a decade of production experience under his belt, Ben started in on his first western film endeavor. Christensen’s The Valley is a short that introduces the classic western to the modern world, and places it front and center for an impending revival of the American West. After driving to college campuses across the country, he realized that student access to opportunities was universally unequal, and so along with Scott Ringwelski and Ben Christensen, decided to form Handshake to reinvent the college recruiting business. I caught up with Garrett in Las Vegas, to talk about how data might change the way companies find, recruit and manage talent in the future.

When it comes to photographers few can touch the authentic aesthetic of Ben Christensen. A film photographer, family man, adventurer and fellow shooter, Ben Christensen is exactly the type of guy I love having on the show. It was super cool hearing what Ben had to say, and like my other guests he is no different when it comes to how open and friendly he is. Listen to this interview with Ben Christensen to hear from a pro with positive vibes. Thanks for the being on the show, Ben!
