In the Flamingo Lounge with Rockabilly Greg

Emily Scripps and Peter Kern from Tsavo Highway visited the Flamingo Lounge on May 1, 2025. An engaging conversation along with music ensued. There are also special outtakes at the end of the episode. Quickly gaining recognition in the indie rock and jam scene for their engaging live performances and heartfelt songwriting is Tsavo Highway, a Buffalo-based band consisting of Emily Scripps – lead vocals/various percussion, Christian Dobosiewicz – guitar, Peter Kern – guitar/background vocals, Brian Calisto – bass/background vocals (Buffalo, NY), and Brian McMahon – drums. The band has shared the stage with an impressive lineup of national acts, including Andy Frasco and The U.N., Spafford, The Magic Beans, Shira Elias (Cool, Cool, Cool), Micheal Angelo Carubba (Remain In Light, and Cool, Cool, Cool), J.WAIL Live Band featuring Natalie Cressman (Trey Anastasio Band), Kito B. (Particle), and Scott Hannay (Mihali Band), yam yam, Thank You Scientist, Underground Springhouse, Seven Teller, and good trees river band. In 2023, they were honored with “Best New Band” and “Best Vocalist” in the AllWNY Awards, cementing their presence in the Western New York music community. The band made their debut with the EP “Pit Stop” in May 2023, followed by their single “Find a Way” that following December, which was featured in outlets such as NYS Music, Last Day Deaf, and Modern Neon. These releases laid the foundation for their distinctive sound and growing presence. Most recently, the band unveiled four singles (Buffalo Girls, V Day Song, Introspect, and Marco Polo) leading up to their highly anticipated album, Circles, released January 21, 2025. Filled with dynamic jams, emotional storytelling, and a fresh energy, the album reflects the band's growth and is already generating buzz in the indie and jam music scenes. Their goal is simple: to create memorable experiences through authentic performances and a shared love of sound.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Slow Joy over Zoom video!Slow Joy, the solo project of Dallas based, New Mexican born Chicano artist Esteban Flores, is thrilled to announce his first official US headline tour. The February 2025 run has Flores out supporting his Mi Amigo Slow Joy EP, which was released June 7th, 2024 via Mick Music. Produced by Mike Sapone (Oso Oso, The Front Bottoms), the EP earned Slow Joy the “Best New Band” designation in the Dallas Observer's Annual “Best of Dallas” roundup and drew comparisons to The Pixies, Modest Mouse and Smashing Pumpkins.Slow Joy spent all of the fall on the road supporting Real Friends alongside Can't Swim and Carly Cosgrove on their Forever And Ever and Ever And Ever And Ever And Ever And Ever Tour. The two month long tour visited most every major city across the US and was Slow Joy's biggest trek to date. Mi Amigo Slow Joy follows 2023's Wildflower EP. The new EP was extremely well received, with FLOOD writing, “...the EP is a celebration of the past three decades of alternative rock music condensed into something more broadly appealing than any of Nevermind's non-single tracks.” The Chicago Reader described the Mi Amigo Slow Joy EP as “...melanges of grungy shoegaze.” And KXT 91.7 said the EP features “crunchy, alt-rock-inflected soundscapes [with] searching, vulnerable lyrics.” Flores' growth as a songwriter and musician can be heard throughout the four new tracks, an accomplishment he credits Sapone for helping him to achieve.Slow Joy is currently working with Sapone on his debut album, due in early 2025. In the fall of 2005, four musicians—Ed Jurdi, Gordy Quist, Brian Keen and Colin Brooks—all had residencies at Momo's, the since-shuttered music club on West 6th Street in Austin, Texas. Ultimately, the four songwriters found themselves jamming each week, sharing a bill in what was lightly called “The Good Time Supper Club” on the Momo's stage.   It became a local staple of the thriving Austin music scene and the stage became “an extended hang,” as Quist noted, somewhat joking that the performances “specialized in tequila and trainwrecks.” He said it was, “a good time for cutting our teeth on danger and taking chances on music and experiencing the magic that comes from that.”   After a misprint in a local newspaper billed the act as "The Heathens," the collective became known as “The Band of Heathens”—our latest guests on The Load Out Music Podcast.   Over a 16-month-period, the group began to galvanize into what would become what remains a force today in Americana-driven rock-and-roll. Now led by Jurdi and Quist, The Band of Heathens has built one of the most dedicated followings for an independent act worldwide.   “It was exciting,” said Jurdi of those formative years. “Everything was very new at that point. So, we were sort of sharing in all these experiences together.”   There was an unquestioned magic that they all could sense, even in the beginning. The band's first recording, Live from Momo's, brought the band national attention and they were voted "Best New Band" at the 2007 Austin Music Awards.     “The fact that we received ‘Best New Band' was a nice reflection of Austin and the scene and the collaboration of the scene,” Jurdi said.   Ultimately, the great Ray Wylie Hubbard—a past guest on The Load Out—signed on to produce The Band of Heathens' self-titled first record.   “Ray is a legend and is a great guy,” Quist said.” He took us under his wing and said, like, ‘let me show you how to make a good record.' He specializes in vibe and cool.”

We are up to episode 17 and it's a pivotal LP both culturally and musically - The Stone Roses much revered eponymously titled debut album from May 1989. Unbelievably, the record was released on exactly the same day as an album we have already covered - our top rated LP to date - Disintegration by The Cure. A very different sound, but will we both rate it as highly as that album? The record buying public and critics certainly liked it with the NME fan readers poll for 1989 voting The Stone Roses the Best Band, Best New Band, Best album and Best Single (Fools Gold). In the year 2000, the NME awarded the record the title of 'Best Album Ever', with the 2009 remaster release receiving a 10/10 rating from 'Pitchfork'. We cover the genesis of the band, including an important chance meeting for Ian Brown with legendary R&B singer Geno Washington, as well as the numerous line-up changes before the 4 lads that recorded the album - singer Ian Brown, guitarist John Squire, drummer Alan 'Reni' Wren, Gary 'Mani' Mounfield' - came together to create such an improtant musical body of work. Along with the impressive songs, their swift ascension during 1989 was fuelled by their unwavering self belief and nose for publicity. The album gets the usual track by track analysis and Rick explains why for quite a while he thought the A-side was the B-side and vice versa. There's a look at what happened to the band after the release of the album including their infamous Spike Island gig, the court case that lead to the 5 year delay in the band releasing a follow-up album and their unlikely 2011 re-union after the bands demise in 1996. The three original principal songwriters - Colin Brooks, Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist - shared the bill at Momo's, an Austin club.[1] Originally, each singer/songwriter performed his own set. However, they eventually started sharing the stage, and collaborating with bassist Seth Whitney. The Wednesday night series was billed as "The Good Time Supper Club". A misprint in a local paper billed the act as "The Heathens." Drummer John Chipman joined the band in 2007, and Keyboardist Trevor Nealon, who played in the studio during the recording of both "One Foot in the Ether" and "Top Hat Crown & the Clapmaster's Son", joined the touring unit in 2011.Their first recording, "Live from Momo's", recorded at the now closed club on West 6th Street in Austin brought the band national attention and they were voted "Best New Band" at the 2007 Austin Music Awards. Following the Momo's release, the band released a second live recording, the CD/DVD "Live at Antone's" which was recorded at the venerable Austin club.May 20, 2008 the band released their first, self-titled, studio album. Produced by Ray Wylie Hubbard, and featuring notable guests Patty Griffin, Stephen Bruton, and Gurf Morlix, the record went to #1 on the Americana Music Association's radio charts. In November 2008 the album was ranked 8th place on the Americana Music Association's Top 100 Albums of the Americana Charts for 2008.[2]In July 2009 BOH taped an Austin City Limits show that aired in the Fall of 2009. The year was especially significant for ACL in that Austin City Limits was celebrating its 35th anniversary year. The band's unique genesis and creativity were highlighted during the Austin City Limits interview conducted after their performance.[3] The TV performance showcased a set by both the Band Of Heathens and Elvis Costello.[4]

Having emerged on the scene from IL, their name is a play on the Chicago city motto, "Urbs in Horto," or Garden in City. They released "Swingin' in the Afternoon" in the summer of 2020 to remind a locked-down world of the simple joys of life.

Broken Records - The Search for the Worst Album Ever

There's endless amounts of mid 00's indie landfill for us to sort through on Broken Records, as you might well imagine, and that's the territory we find ourselves in yet again, as Steve and Remfry hold their collective breath and dive head-first into The Twang and their 4th full-length studio album Neon Twang. Released in March 2014, Neon Twang faced a fairly apathetic reaction from the general public whose appetite for paper thin, non-descript and utterly soulless chav-indie had (thankfully) quelled significantly at this point. It was a far cry from the band's early days when they were hailed by the NME as ‘Britain's Best New Band' on the cover of the 31st March 2007 edition of the magazine. A couple of months later, their debut album Love It When I Feel Like This received 6/10 in the very same magazine (déjà vu anyone?), hardly a critical mauling but a score that is somewhat baffling given NME's cover proclamation just weeks before. As is sometimes the case with this indie landfill stuff, wavering critical opinion seems a large part of the reason why Neon Twang has found its way onto Broken Records and whilst neither Steve nor Remfry are going to bend over backwards to hand out platitudes to The Twang, the question remains … does Neon Twang really deserve the critical appraisal that it received?

He received his first major break at age 15, performing with Lacey Sturm, of Flyleaf. This would catapult him into pursuing a promising career in music. At age 18, he moved to California and began performing as a drummer gaining success in just a few years. He then decided it was time to focus on writing music for other artists and bands. This move would lead him back east to Pittsburgh where he eventually would meet a young producer, Caleb Thomas. Together they began to create the first major project of his career. KOLE's nine track LP titled CaH20, is set to release in 2021.

Prism Bitch loves you. Prism Bitch is a hard rock band that beamed down in 2016 from the dust and wind of New Mexico. The group started as a four piece and asexually reproduced an additional member in 2017, resulting in a 5 piece mix of heavy guitar/keyboard layers blended with pop hooks/melodies/harmonies and occasional total noise freakouts - often compared to The Pixies and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. From humble beginnings at a punk rock coffeehouse open mic to nominations in the Weekly Alibi's "Best of Burque” music awards for 2017, 2018, and 2019 (Best New Band, Best Party Band, Best Stage Presence, Band Most Likely To Make It Big In Japan), Prism Bitch has been privileged to share stages with Treepeople, Shonen Knife, and Le Butcherettes. In September 2018, Prism Bitch completed a West Coast tour with Built to Spill, and have toured again with the iconic band on the East coast September 12 to October 12, 2019. Prism Bitch released their self-titled EP November 2018. The EP features 5 songs, recorded with engineer Toshi Kasai, known for his work with The Melvins, Big Business and Foo Fighters. Prism Bitch will be releasing a new album in 2020. Howler was an indie rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The band quickly received international acclaim, most notably from legendary UK music magazine NME, which named Howler their No. 3 Best New Band of 2011 and included lead guitar and vocalist Jordan Gatesmith in their 2011 Cool List. This led the band to getting signed to Rough Trade Records. When I hung out with the band, they were at an interesting place. Lead singer Jordan Gatesmith had recently caused an uproar when he trashed his local music scene by saying, "They'll really build up these bands...that I will hate.... And then, of course, nothing will happen outside Minneapolis for them." And the band had just released World of Joy--the first record after all the UK hype. Going in I knew this would be a fun chat. Jordan is a smart guy and talking with him would be combative and hilarious. (Howler have now disbanded. Jordan Gatesmith has since moved to LA and started a new project called Wellness.) What's it like to survive the hype? How did Jordan make up with the Minneapolis scene? What is everybody's star sign? What's the band's drink of choice? What happened when the rest of the band crashed the interview? How does the band balances influences with finding their own sound? What music does the band love but you can't tell from their music? What's the weirdest thing the band has done to impress a music hero? Which band member had to leave to call his girlfriend? You'll have to listen to find out. Working Class Audio #152 with Horacio Bolz!!! Horacio Bolz  is an engineer/producer from  Montevideo, Uruguay. By the age of 8 he was recording for fun and playing guitar and drums. While his life plan was originally to become a commercial airline pilot, it wasn't until  later he realized that music, producing and engineering was what I wanted to do in life. So by the age of 18 he moved to the UK to follow that dream. Horacio  started his Production & Sound Engineering studies at Alchemea Collage in London. Once there he began to work for Phil Manzanera and Javier Weyler as an assistant engineer. During this period he recorded part of Phil's last two solo albums (The Sound of Blue & Corroncho 2).   In 2012 Horacio returned to Uruguay where he started working as head engineer at Vivace Music. There, he recorded and mixed songs for most of the best bands in the country. Meanwhile he started doing live related work as a Monitor Engineer for Uruguayan bands. 2013 was the year in which Horacio  started his band The Islingtons. They released "1 1 2 3 5", their  first studio album which was nominated for "Best New Band" at the Graffiti Awards. Since 2015 Horacio has been working as a freelance engineer, producer and musician. He owns (with his business partner Christian Eichin) a software development company in which they develop a free app called "Wavejam". A collaborative multi-track recorder for iOS devices. Horacio also owns Vincent, a Creative Audio & Film production company based in Montevideo, Uruguay.   About this Interview: Horacio talks with me about his early plan to become a commercial airline pilot, his work with Phil Manzanara, import taxes in Uruguay and how that affects his ability to buy equipment, as well his ability to make a living and incorporate audio into his life even when faced limitations. -Matt Show notes and links: Horacio on Linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/in/horacio-bolz-33659957/ Fix Audio Designs (Paul Wolf) https://www.fixaudiodesigns.com/ After Master http://aftermaster.com/ http://www.500seriesmodules.com/ Sonarworks Reference 4 software https://www.sonarworks.com/

22 year old singer/songwriter Willow Robinson was born in Los Angeles and grew up between the Welsh Borders and London where he is now based. With influences ranging from Mick Jagger to Otis Redding, his guitar driven, soulful, rock n roll meets folk songs are full of raw emotion. After signing to record label Clark & McGee Ltd in 2015 and playing a series of support slots with artists including The Jesus and Mary Chain and Killing Joke he has recently released his second EP called Ocean Blue. This weeks featured track is ‘Your Animal' from Illustr8ors. In Their Own Words: In one breath illustrators is a metamorphosis, and a stubborn stride towards a place where the core components of rock'n'roll exist in a relative and contemporary time. In another breath illustr8ors is just a contemporary rock band giving a f**k about what it means to be alive in music now. Not yesterday, not tomorrow, but right now” In their previous guise, as BlackWolf, illustr8ors scored tours and supports with the likes of The Temperance Movement, Winger, Blues Pills, Von Hertzen Brothers and The Answer to name a few; a nomination for Classic Rock Magazine's ‘Best New Band' roll of honour award, numerous playlist slots on major rock radio stations and a debut headline tour endorsed by Planet Rock Radio. However, it was time for a change. A time for a more decisive stride towards a definitive and individual sonic identity. A rebirth. That's when illustr8ors were born. Featuring four white hot songs, the band's self titled ep is sharp, drenched in groove, ladened with hooks and melody, whilst intelligent and a straight to the point collection of music. No messing about, no gimmicks…this is what rock music sounds like right NOW. .
