In the Flamingo Lounge with Rockabilly Greg

Emily Scripps and Peter Kern from Tsavo Highway visited the Flamingo Lounge on May 1, 2025. An engaging conversation along with music ensued. There are also special outtakes at the end of the episode. Quickly gaining recognition in the indie rock and jam scene for their engaging live performances and heartfelt songwriting is Tsavo Highway, a Buffalo-based band consisting of Emily Scripps – lead vocals/various percussion, Christian Dobosiewicz – guitar, Peter Kern – guitar/background vocals, Brian Calisto – bass/background vocals (Buffalo, NY), and Brian McMahon – drums. The band has shared the stage with an impressive lineup of national acts, including Andy Frasco and The U.N., Spafford, The Magic Beans, Shira Elias (Cool, Cool, Cool), Micheal Angelo Carubba (Remain In Light, and Cool, Cool, Cool), J.WAIL Live Band featuring Natalie Cressman (Trey Anastasio Band), Kito B. (Particle), and Scott Hannay (Mihali Band), yam yam, Thank You Scientist, Underground Springhouse, Seven Teller, and good trees river band. In 2023, they were honored with “Best New Band” and “Best Vocalist” in the AllWNY Awards, cementing their presence in the Western New York music community. The band made their debut with the EP “Pit Stop” in May 2023, followed by their single “Find a Way” that following December, which was featured in outlets such as NYS Music, Last Day Deaf, and Modern Neon. These releases laid the foundation for their distinctive sound and growing presence. Most recently, the band unveiled four singles (Buffalo Girls, V Day Song, Introspect, and Marco Polo) leading up to their highly anticipated album, Circles, released January 21, 2025. Filled with dynamic jams, emotional storytelling, and a fresh energy, the album reflects the band's growth and is already generating buzz in the indie and jam music scenes. Their goal is simple: to create memorable experiences through authentic performances and a shared love of sound.

On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Alex from Lunar, a band with a unique sound that blends different genres. Pipeman praises the latest tune by Lunar, highlighting its amazing musicianship, and shares his perception that the band's music sounds like a combination of heavy metal, thrash, death metal, and hair metal. Alex agrees and mentions that the band strives to have a good balance of eclectic genres, which is possible because the band members have different musical influences. The band members' musical tastes and experiences come from different subgenres, such as power metal, funk, and tribute bands. This eclectic mix of influences adds a unique sound to their music. Pipeman shares his impression of Lunar's song, Juggling Chainsaws, where he felt surprised every 30 seconds. Alex explains that the album, in particular, keeps listeners guessing while staying coherent throughout, taking them on a journey, and making them want to see it through to the end. Pipeman then talks about Lunar's second album and asks Alex to share more about the song's sad themes. Alex clarifies that the previous album, Ilon, was written about the death of Ryan Irwin, the band's friend and co-founder. This album is about the grieving process and coping with his loss. In contrast, the current album has a story about a character called the illusionist, whose journey reflects mental health struggles, similar to what the band experienced with Ryan's passing. Alex agrees that music is the best therapy and that it helps people cope with mental illness. You can find Lunar on all the socials under Lunar Band Official like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. 2020! It's been a strange one. We may not have had many gigs to go to but there's been some absolutely brilliant music helping us all through, so, as with every year, here's our annual best of the year episode!Over the next 2 hours (Longest episode yet!) we'll count down our favourite 30 songs of the year, plus we'll also discuss songs we've discovered this year that weren't released in 2020, and a few songs that narrowly missed out on being included. We've changed the voting system a little this year with the help of our friend Peter Latimer who is a maths genius. (you'll often find him stood near the mixing desk at Slowdive gigs inputting the setlist into an excel spreadsheet to predict which song will be the set closer)...We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them, so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of the year. The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointPeter had also suggested a method to avoid so many songs with identical scores, but it was particularly complicated so we decided that we weren't that bothered about songs in joint positions!Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Fiona Apple, Arab Strap, Astrel K, The Avalanches, Bell Witch Phoebe Bridgers, Bully, Caspian, Code Orange, Dark Globes, Dystopian Future Movies, Epic45, The Flaming Lips, Ghostpoet, Honey Harper, The Hell, Jonathan Hulten, Huntsmen, Ihsahn, I LIKE TRAINS, Jesu, Johannes & Farkosten, Lanterns On The Lake, Major Parkinson, Nada Surf, Orville Peck, Peel Dream Magazine, Молчат Дома, Porridge Radio, Royksopp & Robyn, Sleep Token, The Slow Summits, Squarepusher, Such Small Hands, Taylor Swift, Thank You Scientist, Ulver, Vernon Jane, Bob Vylan, Watkins Family Hour, Waveform*, A.A. (32:45) Herod, Pijn, Thank You Scientist, ZALM en Night Verses. (36:24) Na de chiropractor het speciale Jettison-optreden van And So I Watch You From Afar. (49:05) De carrière-spannende set van And So I Watch You From Afar. (01:08:52) Shout-outs (01:10:08)

Among the many we discuss are albums by 100 gecs, Devin Townsend, CHON, Rammstein, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Pedro the Lion, Billie Eilish, Jacob Collier, Bring Me the Horizon, OWEL, Thank You Scientist, Periphery, Nova Charisma, Snarky Puppy, The Jon Hill Project, Carly Rae Jepson, and many more. We also talk about the current state of "prog" and our opinions on how the genre has evolved and where it should go in the future.

On this episode of the Decipher the Media podcast, I sat down with guitarist and songwriter Dan Suriano to talk about what it has been like to write and release music for his band Nephele, his process of writing music, and his history with the band. Dan also talked about the experience playing live shows and playing with bands such as Thank You Scientist. Esserelá, Ignu, Initiator, Monograf, Moon Letters, Nick Johnston, Steve Unruh, Thank You Scientist, The Nighttime Project, The Skys y Wednedsday Call.
