"What makes a person consider leaving their home and migrating to another country? In America, considered a land of immigrants, people came for a fresh start, a better life for themselves and their family. There have been many waves of migration to the United States in our history including for example from China in the mid 1800's, many settling in New York City, the Irish beginning in 1845, the Italians predominantly from 1900 - 1914 and so many more. "New York City had been the entry point and the destination of many who have made the journey, however today, the migration at the southern border has created a division within the country in how we see new immigration. The debate has raised many questions, one of which has had me questioning why people today, in this moment, would look to America as a destination? Especially in this moment when I have contemplated leaving my home based on the outcome of the the presidential election coming this November. "In thinking about these questions and in looking at the populations who have arrived here in New York City throughout our history, I can only imagine what must go into a decision of this magnitude. This work I am presenting makes an attempt at addressing these questions. It begins as though in a dream, imagine a voyage across a vast ocean and upon arrival, the surreal feelings of finally arriving and navigating through this new land ultimately finding a community of like people and the beginning of a new reality, a new life and a sense of place in this case all on the corner of Mott and Hester Streets in Chinatown, New York City. "The music for my composition, A Sense of Place, was composed using Logic Pro. The field recording was altered and decontextualized at the opening and in the dreamlike sequence that follows using Audacity until returning the to the original field recording at the conclusion of the piece." New York Chinatown reimagined by Bill Stevens. Part of the Migration Sounds project, the world's first collection of the sounds of human migration. "I chose the sound of children playing in the street in Paris, France and heard this as the sound of spring, not just in Paris, but here in New York City as well. Spring moves from the harchness of winter, days of rain and yet, the sound of birds returning to the city marking a rebirth, a chance to slow down and take in each new moment as a breath of fresh air. To tell this story further, I included a series of spoken word recitations of the following poems on spring: Spring, Christina Rosetti A Light Exists in Spring, Emily Dickerson Sonnet 98, William Shakespear In Just, ee cummings "I approached this composition as a more minimalist, open concept using my horn and silence as the primary elements while utilizing the field recording both as is and recontextualized with the spoken word poetry acting as a guided meditation on life beginning anew marking the season of spring." Children playing in Paris reimagined by Bill Stevens.
In 1780, Camden was the oldest and largest town in the Carolina backcountry. It was strategic to both the British Army and the Patriots in the Revolutionary War. Following a series of strategic errors before and during the Battle of Camden, the Patriot army under command of Major General Horatio Gates was soundly defeated, ushering in changes in military leadership that altered the war's course. After the battle, Major General Nathanael Greene was promoted to command of the Southern Campaign, and his leadership ultimately led to the evacuation of the British army from Charleston, SC in December 1782.In November of 2022, the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust announced a significant, historic discovery at the Revolutionary War Camden Battlefield. The Trust, acting on behalf of Historic Camden Foundation, contracted with the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of South Carolina, to excavate a number of bodies of Revolutionary War soldiers killed in the August 16, 1780 Battle of Camden.Walter Edgar talks with Dr. Steve Smith of the SC Institute for Archeology and Anthropology at USC; Bill Stevens, forensic anthropologist with the Richland County Coroner's Office; and Doug Bostick, CEO of the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust about the excavations, the significance of the discoveries, and about plans for reinterment ceremonies April 20-22, 2023, in Camden.
*To recreate the effect of this sound installation, we strongly recommend listening through headphones.* The Well-Being Cities sound installation is an hour-long interactive tour across 31 countries, starting with the furthest from Buenos Aires in Seoul, with each destination one step closer until we arrive at our host city with the final recording. On one side of the installation space, you will hear an original field recording from that city, documenting a moment in its life. On the other side of the space, you will hear a reimagined composition built from that original recording, with each artist inspired by the source material and the question of what constitutes well-being in a city for them. The pieces change in sync, so the field recording and reimagined composition change to the next destination at precisely the same time. By physically moving around the space, the listener is able to create his or her own sound mix by proximity to either set of speakers, focusing on the field recording, the composition, and how the two blend with and interact with one another. We invite the listener to participate by immersing themselves in the sound and exploring how 31 artists have reinterpreted the sounds of 31 cities. The recordings and compositions you will hear are listed in the timecode below. "Upon hearing the original sound recording of sirens in Copenhagen, it struck me how difficult a task it is to truly create an equitable, healthy and climate-safe approach to what well-being might look like for the cities of the world. This is especially evident in light of current world events which are not limited to the Russian invasion into Ukraine and the threat of the use of nuclear weapons coming from Vladimir Putin, the war exercises occurring in and around Taiwan by the Chinese, the continuing escalation of tensions between Israel and the Palestinians, the on again, off again nuclear talks between the United States and Iran, let alone the threat of civil war here in the United States being stoked by an insurrectionist former president. "My composition, Everyday Utopias, is a cautionary tale of how simple it would be to enter into a nuclear World War if we are not alert to what that would mean for the planet. We have it within our power and abilities to avert this, as of now, imaginary future. For true sustainability and wellbeing to occur, we must be able to put our differences aside and see where we have commonalities leading to a fundamental shift in thinking that looks to revive and protect our planet looking toward a collective future, a more resilient future. "My tale begins as though in a dream. What future path will we take? One of sustainability or one of mutual destruction? Aside from the musical sections I composed on Logic Pro, I also included the following field recordings: * New York City Nuclear Preparedness Public Service Announcement * 009 DENMARK COPENHAGEN Sirens in Copenhagen May 6 12.00pm 2020 - Timothy John Hinman * United States Nuclear Preparedness Announcement in the Event of a Nuclear Strike on the mainland United States * Statement by Albert Einstein as read by Paul Pricer "I do not believe that this is the path we need to follow, but in the words of Rod Serling from the Twilight Zone episode number 68 from September 29, 1961, “The Shelter” … "No moral, no message, no prophetic track, just a simple statement of fact. For civilization to survive, the human race has to remain civilized." Copenhagen sirens reimagined by Bill Stevens. We had the pleasure of interviewing Becca Stevens over Zoom video!GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter Becca Stevens and GRAMMY Award-winning Attacca Quartet recently released their collaborative album Becca Stevens | Attacca Quartet, on GroundUP Music. Nearly a decade ago, Stevens was approached by pianist, composer, and conductor Stephen Prutsman to reimagine some of her songs with string arrangements for a performance at San Diego's Mainly Mozart Festival. It would become a life-changing opportunity—introducing Stevens to her husband, the acclaimed violist, composer, and Attacca Quartet member Nathan Schram. This concert would ultimately inspire her career-spanning album—one which blossomed alongside her relationship with Nathan, resulting in the collaborative full-length. Becca's family also played a vital role in the shaping of Becca Stevens | Attacca Quartet, including string arrangements from her father (composer William Stevens) and arrangements/co-production by her brother (producer/engineer/composer Bill Stevens). Hailed for their stylistic versatility, Attacca is the perfect foil for Becca, who has long explored a wide range of genres - from folk and jazz to funk and pop. The album's tracklist honors the project's origins while reflecting Becca's development as an artist. Since the recording of Becca Stevens | Attacca Quartet, much has transpired. Among the highlights are Becca's first GRAMMY® nod (2020's WONDERBLOOM) and Attacca's first GRAMMY® win (2019's Orange). Nathan also released a solo debut, Oak and the Ghost, while Becca earned praise for her latest record, Becca Stevens & The Secret Trio. The quartet meanwhile continues to push their creative boundaries—particularly with their latest record, Real Life, which finds them further exploring the work of electronic artists. Klifavik fjord reimagined by Bill Stevens. "As I listened to the recording, I began to research the connections between the early visitors and settlers of Iceland by the Scandinavians and the Irish. This mix of cultures brought to mind the folk music of the island that has lasted through generations. "The sound of the stream and rivers, only interrupted by the sound of footsteps, created a meditative experience that I wanted to bring forward, emphasizing this cultural mix through my interpretation on the folk music of Iceland. "In this piece I made the decision to leave the recording as is with no changes in the hope that the listener will join me on a journey to the past of this beautiful and mysterious island. "

New York lockdown sound recorded by Bill Stevens. "Last summer I composed a sound piece, part of which included the sounds from the corner of my apartment building on 16th Street and 6th Avenue in Manhattan, New York City. "As is typical in my neighborhood, there is a vast amount of noise which as a resident of New York, you tend to block out most of the time. On that particular day, as this was for a project, I felt very in tune to the sounds of my corner - the constant and continuous rush of traffic, the school next to my building at the end of the school day along with the constant depth of people rushing uptown, downtown or crosstown, as well as patrons of the neighborhood deli, coffee houses and diners. "Today, New York City is under a Stay at Home directive. The schools have been closed city-wide. The diner can only take delivery orders or take out, no seating allowed. The coffee houses are closed and the deli is open, but not cooking meals. The first sound of my 60 second recording that I heard upon standing on the corner of 16th & 6th, was the sound of bird songs, which we tend to never hear. It was so quiet and quite amazing, beautiful. "There comes a rush of traffic as the light changes, but that rush was maybe a handful of cars and trucks if that, returning once again to the silence of bird songs. The only time I ever heard my corner this quiet was the day after September 11th. "On that day, there was no movement and a stunned silence as the people in my neighborhood walked in silent disbelief of what we had just witnessed. And on this date, New York finds itself once again as Ground Zero, the epicenter of the COVID-19 virus in the United States. "I can say that as we shelter in we are concerned, certainly scared, wondering if we will ever again be in contact with the people that we live so close to on a daily basis. Will we ever feel comfortable again to go out to dinner, attend a concert or sporting event? But I can tell you this, this city does not give up, we will get through this and come out stronger and united on the other end. I also believe that we are being taught a lesson, that no country can exist on their own in isolation. "We are a global community and it will take all of us coming together to defeat this, as it will take all of us to bring the economy back, but maybe this time an economy that works for everyone, not just the wealthy. "Maybe, just maybe together we can look at protecting our planet for the common good. Is it possible to imagine that had we done these two things, this virus might not have come into being?"
