With special guests: Colin & Paul Tatz… in conversation with Bill Kable This program is dedicated to the memory of Professor Colin Tatz. Black Pearls: The Aboriginal and Islander Sports Hall of Fame is a celebratory book about the earth shattering sporting performances of our Aboriginal and Islander Australians since the arrival of the white man in 1788. This handsome work is presented by the Aboriginal Studies Press. As our guest Colin Tatz explains, the book is also a Hall of Fame that unlike bricks and mortar halls can be on display in our own homes and carried around with us. With its beautiful pictures and stories about its 276 members covering 36 sports this is a project that began in the Bi-Centenary year of 1988 after Colin spoke to some communities about the absence of recognition for these sports stars. Pearl farming became French Polynesia's most significant export business because two yachts were docked next to one another, and the owners knew a guy. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not so secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Steven's sidekick and business partner Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is ... well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [Tapper's Jewelry Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young here with Stephen Semple. When you told me the topic for today, my first thought was, "Okay, and I got nothing. I don't know. I don't know the story of this," and my second thought was, "Wait. This is an empire? This is an empire?" We're going to talk about the origin of black pearls. Stephen Semple: We're going to talk about the origin of black pearls. Dave Young: This doesn't even feel like an empire that I know of. Stephen Semple: Well, here's the reason why I like to define it as an empire, is if we take a look at the economy of French Polynesia, which is where black pearls comes from, it is actually one of their biggest exports. In fact, it's one of the biggest parts of their economy. I get French Polynesia is not a big country and not a huge economy, but when something becomes, by design, one of your largest parts of your economy, I kind of got to call that a little bit of a empire. Dave Young: I agree with you. I agree on that premise. Stephen Semple: So that's where it comes from, and here's the thing that's really wild, is it really came on the scene in the mid 1970s. Before that, historically it was not a significant player in jewelry. If you were to find famous crowns or famous this, black pearls are hardly mentioned anywhere. They were not a thing. They were not a thing. They were not recognized as a gem. They were not something that was seen as being valuable and what you're going to see is it became valuable and a very desirable piece of jewelry due to the work of three individuals; Salvador Assael, Jean-Claude Brouillet, and Harry Winston. Without these three people, black pearls may never have become a thing. Dave Young: Well, you mentioned Harry Winston, and you've got my attention. Stephen Semple: For those who don't know who Harry Winston is, you're a big deal when you are mentioned in the song, Diamonds are the Girl's Best Friend. There's a line in the song where it goes, "Tiffany's, Cartier, Black Starr, Frost Gorham. Talk to me, Harry Winston, tell me all about it." So when you are named in Diamonds is a Girl's Best Friend sung by Marilyn Monroe and Madonna, you're a big deal. You are a big deal. Anyway, going back to the origin, Jean-Claude is an entrepreneur and he started a bunch of hotels in Tahiti that were a huge success. But while doing this, he learned about black pearls. The oysters that produce black pearls are only found in a small area in Tahiti. They're not found anywhere else in the world. Initially, these oysters were desired for the shells because of the color of the Mother of Pearl. They produced this range of colors from iridescent green to purples to pinks and charcoal grays and black. That's what was desirable in them. These oysters were farmed almost to extinction. Then in the '60s, they started harvesting them, but it took a while to get the techniques right for it. Initially, the quality of the harvested pearls were not consistent and then a chance meeting in 1973, 1973, and St. Tropez, Jean-Claude Brouillet and Salvador Assael's yachts happened to be docked next to each other. And it turns out Salvador Assael is a well known pearl dealer. He later goes on to become dubbed the Pearl King.

What a sheer delight to have this talented artist on my show. He is down to earth and shares his life story with me on New Starz as well as his talented music and songs with artists that he has performed on those tracks. A special thank you goes out to Diane of Entertainment Bureau for her support in making this interview happen. As a Southern Californian native Melvin Lee Davis began playing music, ‘the moment he came out of the womb', and felt he was destined to be a musician. Influenced by his surroundings, where music was constantly present, Davis began playing the violin aged four. By the time he was six, he had switched over to the saxophone. Like many successful musicians, Davis went on to play in the band at his church. When Davis was 16, a horn player from Buddy Miles's band saw him play at a local club, and recommended him to Miles for an audition. Miles flew Davis out to New York for the audition and hired him on the spot for his touring band. Davis was introduced to Soul Train's Don Cornelius through Ron “Have Mercy” Kersey, a staff producer at A&M Records. That led to him working as a staff bassist for Cornelius in 1978. Cornelius introduced Davis to a number of the top recording artists. As a result, Davis began writing music and performing with R&B singer O'Bryan from 1980 to 1987 through a record deal put in place by Cornelius, which included Davis writing the theme song, ‘Soul Train's A Comin' for Cornelius' weekly television show, Soul Train. He has served as Chaka Khan's Musical Director at various times throughout his career; most recently, during her European Night of the Proms (2015) and Art On Ice (2016) tours. Davis performed at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards (2013) and was a member of the Pre-Telecast Grammy Awards band from 2008 to 2014. He has been a member of the Technical Excellence & Creativity (TEC) Awards band since 2008. Davis is also a founder of the band called Output Input where he teamed up with singer of the 80's Average White Band Hamish Stuart. Before Eclectic City was a monthly publication a podcast was created celebrating the words and musci of the quirky, weird and influential 90's televison series Twin Peaks. It started as a fun project, something that was created from sound bytes and music gathered from collections that were available online not long after the internet "became a thing". These files were taken from the tv series and the prequel "Fire Walk With Me". Of course, the majority of the music here was written by Angelo Badalamenti. But songs like "The Pink Room" were purely David Lynch creations. The podcast also includes remixes and alternate versions that some folks may remember. And then there's Julee Cruise's vocals... Uff!The order of the songs, their specific arrangement with the dialogue, was something that worked out over a period of months, trying to arrive at some semblance of a chronological or "lynch-ological" order that made the sense. I think in the end, I got it right. As seemed appropriate, the podcast begins with Agent Cooper, steadfast and in his boy-scout mission to find Laura Palmer's murderer. We openly cheer his fearless dedication, as we fear for his soul. Twin Peaks reveals its secrets, layer by disturbing layer. Before too long fear becomes something both abstract and concrete. And its name is "Bob".I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I've enjoyed making it. I'm still not tired.

Armed exclusively with a twangy 6-string resonator-an instrument most audience members associate with the likes of Son House and accompanied by a pumping drums-and-bass rhythm section, the lanky, tattooed, 6'2" Eric Sardinas delivers a fast-paced set of adrenaline-drenched blues. But because Sardinas cranks through a Rivera half-stack and displays a penchant for crunchy, feedback-laced tones, his wicked solos evoke Jimi Hendrix and Duane Allman, even as they pay homage to Charley Patton and Elmore James. An hour before show time, the soft-spoken Sardinas sat with GP, sharing his techniques and demonstrating the slide riffs he used on his latest album, Black Pearls. Produced and mixed by the legendary Eddie Kramer, the disc is packed with taut grooves and snarling resonator tones.
