Send us a text(REPRISE) Ken welcomes professor, fellow podcaster, and author Dr. Brad Onishi back to the podcast to talk about his new book - Preparing for War - The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism and What Comes Next (release date: January 3, 2023). A long-time friend of the podcast, Brad has been busy after a major event in Denver focussed on Christian Nationalism last month with a large audience both live and virtual. It featured major influencers and thinkers including Robert P. Jones,  Sam Perry, Katherine Steward, Larycia Hawkins, and his podcast partner, Dan Miller. In addition to his regular podcast, Straight White American Jesus,. Brad is releasing a series on The New Apostolic Reformation with Professor Matthew Taylor, Ph.D. It's an expose on a growing movement advancing an extreme dominion version of Christianity. Brad introduces his book which traces what we now know as Christian Trumpism from the 1960s to the present in the context of his own personal journey - beginning with his conversion in high school in Orange County (CA); the great mid-west and Southern migration to California, the John Birch Society, The Crystal Cathedral and Robert Schuller, his own Friends Church (predominantly white) and Friendship Baptist Church (predominantly black), to Dr. James Dobson and his secular eugenicist mentor, Dr. Paul Pompenoe. Onishi fills in the background on two Jericho Marches, featuring Eric Metaxas, Michael Flynn and Alex Jones,  which were a prelude to the January 6 Insurrection. Finally, the two discuss the ways in which American Evangelicalism finds its roots in The Lost Case Narrative of the South. What is the growing appeal of fascist idealism for young people? Why is radical nationalism on the rise in Europe and throughout the world? In Living Right: Far Right Youth Activists in Contemporary Europe (Princeton UP, 2024), Dr. Agnieszka Pasieka provides an in-depth account of the ideas and practices that are driving the varied forms of far-right activism by young people from all walks of life, revealing how these social movements offer the promise of comradery, purpose, and a moral calling to self-sacrifice, and demonstrating how far-right ideas are understood and lived in ways that speak to a variety of experiences. Dr. Agnieszka Pasieka draws on her own sometimes harrowing fieldwork among Italian, Polish, and Hungarian militant youths, painting unforgettable portraits of students, laborers, entrepreneurs, musicians, and activists from well-off middle class backgrounds who have all found a nurturing home in the far right. With a focus on far-right morality that challenges commonly held ideas about the right, Dr. Pasieka describes how far-right movements afford opportunities to the young to be active members of tightly bonded comradeships while sharing in a broader project with global ramifications. In this episode we consider: the power of listening, locating and unpacking complexities, navigating field work, and handling difficult situations. Our guest is: Dr. Agnieszka Pasieka, who is a sociocultural anthropologist. Before joining the University of Montreal, she was a senior research fellow at the University of Vienna and held guest lecturer and guest professor positions at various universities: Central European University, University of Bayreuth, Dartmouth College, and Yale University. Watching the footage of the January 6 insurrection, Professor Bradley Onishi wondered: If I hadn't left evangelicalism, would I have been there? Today's book is: Preparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism—and What Comes Next (Broadleaf Books, 2023), by Dr. Bradley Onishi, which unpacks recent U.S. history to show how the insurrection at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021 was not a blip or an aberration. It was the logical outcome of years of a White evangelical subculture's preparation for war. Religion scholar and former insider Bradley Onishi maps the origins of White Christian nationalism and traces its offshoots. Combining his own experiences in the youth groups and prayer meetings of the 1990s with an immersive look at the steady blending of White grievance politics with evangelicalism, Dr. Onishi crafts an engrossing account of the years-long campaign of White Christian nationalism that led to January 6. How did the rise of what Onishi calls the New Religious Right, between 1960 and 2015, give birth to violent White Christian nationalism during the Trump presidency and beyond? What propelled some of the most conservative religious communities in the country—communities of which Dr. Onishi was once a part—to ignite a cold civil war? Through chapters on White supremacy and segregationist theologies, conspiracy theories, the Christian-school movement, purity culture, and the right-wing media ecosystem, Professor Onishi pulls back the curtain on a subculture. Our guest is: Dr. Brad Onishi, who is a scholar of religion and cohost of the Straight White American Jesus podcast. His writing has been published in the New York Times, LA Review of Books, and Religion & Politics, among other outlets. He holds degrees from Azusa Pacific University, Oxford University, and L'institut catholique de Paris, and received his PhD from the University of California at Santa Barbara. A TEDx speaker and the author, editor, or translator of four previous books, Dr. Onishi teaches at the University of San Francisco. He lives in the Bay Area with his wife and daughter. Our host is: Dr. Christina Gessler, the producer of the Academic Life podcast. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Brad Onishi, writer, co-host of the Straight White American Jesus podcast, and founder of Axis Mundi Media, to discuss his recent book Preparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism – And What Comes Next. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Biden's tight grasp on his candidacy, major defeats for the right wing in the UK and France, Iran's presidential election, the Lancet report on Gaza's 180k+ death toll, ceasefire negotiations, Project 2025, anti-administrative attacks on trans care, Boeing's plea deal, and the passing of Jane McAlevey, before diving a little deeper into the ongoing conversation about the future of Biden's candidacy. Brad Onishi then joins, diving right into the pivotal moment of the 1960s-70s social and electoral movements – from Civil Rights to the ERA – that brought the aggrievement of the “religious right” in the US back to the fore, and saw the return of a true Christian Nationalist movement in US politics. Stepping back, Onishi looks at his roots in the birthplace of this US Conservative Christian movement – Orange County, California – and the major role this county played in offering an escape for southern and midwestern “implants” from “urban diversity” (Black people), as myriad conservative-driven industries boomed in post-WWII SoCal. Expanding on this era's particular distillation of Christian Nationalism, Brad walks Sam and Emma through the proliferation of America-first rhetoric in the burgeoning Mega Church and Evangelical communities, with hyper-Americanism and theocratic rule fusing in a cogenerative movement to reclaim the country from “fake” Americans that could not be trusted with socio-political power, a perspective deeply ingrained in the modern day conservative movement. After expanding on the contemporary manifestation of this movement's proliferation (Donald Trump, Jan 6th, the overturn of Roe v. Wade, etc), Onishi wraps up by expanding on his connection to this movement, what we can learn from much of his community's escape-from-evangelism, how to organize the left against this threat, and the role traditional catholicism plays as a guiding force for this movement. And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam watch NC Gubernatorial Candidate Mark Robinson speak in front of the cross about the innate American desire to kill some folks, parse through the unsurprising yet wildly devastating Lancet report on the drastic undercount of deaths in Gaza, and unpack Hamas' acquiescence to a temporary ceasefire. They also expand on the conversation about Biden's future, including CNN's recent report on Biden's underperforming polling, and where it leaves other electoral races, before watching Dave Rubin build up his expectations for the conservative contagion's performance in Europe before it all comes crashing down in front of him, plus, your calls and IMs! Watching the footage of the attack on the U.S. Capitol on the morning of Jan. 6, 2021, Bradley Onishi thought to himself, “If I hadn't left evangelicalism, would I have been there?” In his book entitled, “Preparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism and What Comes Next,” Onishi offers a sobering historical account of the origins and development of White Christian nationalism in the United States and its offshoots. From the unique perspective of a former insider, Onishi explains how the decades-long campaign of White Christian nationalism in the United States culminated in the Jan. 6 attack. Lawfare Associate Editor Katherine Pompilio sat down with Onishi—a scholar of religion and co-host of the Straight White American Jesus Podcast—to discuss his personal experience as a former White Christian nationalist and how it informed his writing of the book. They also discussed culture wars and the myth of the Christian nation, the elections of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, Jan. 6 rioters and religious symbols at the riot, how Donald Trump fits into all of this, and more. Many young people raised within the restrictive discipline of a strict, Christian evangelical childhood are pulling away from that narrow and dogmatic framework as adults and finding comfort and guidance in a podcasting community of fellow travelers who are walking a similar path.  Among these bold podcasters are two former church leaders who are now critical voices in a campaign against Christian Nationalism and for a free and fair pluralistic democracy.Scholar, author, coach and co-host of Straight White American Jesus, Brad Onishi joins us along with musician, author and host of Chapel Probation, Scott Okamoto. In Brad's new book, Preparing for War, he offers brilliant insights into our history and legacy of colonialism, racism and white supremacy and how our untreated wounds continue to fester and infect our political landscape. Bigotry and prejudice are even more insidiously dangerous when they come holding a cross, wrapped in a flag.Brad's podcast with Dan Miller is Straight White American Jesus in which the two university professors examine and discuss the intersection of the religious right  and politics in America.Scott's focus is on Evangelical colleges. He taught for 16 years at Azusa Pacific University and become increasingly disillusioned by the subpar academic standards in support of white supremacy. His book, Asian American Apostate recounts his struggle to break free of a value system that encourages White Christian cultural power and to, instead, embrace his own Japanese heritage.Scott's podcast, Chapel Probation features conversations with fellow evangelical college graduates with horrifying stories to share about life on the inside and their escapes from racist, sexist and unforgiving indoctrination. We talk in-depth about the problematic curricula at Fundamentalist Christian colleges, homeschooling and private religious education. We explore the meaning of  deconstruction and decolonization as the terms apply to those departing from Christian backgrounds, the Seven Mountains mandate, the new Apostolic Reformation, the ascension of Mike Johnson, purity culture, why the right loves Trump and Putin & much more.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending The Holdovers and Rustin.Path Points of Interest:Brad OnishiStraight White American JesusStraight White American Jesus on FacebookStraight White American Jesus on TwitterPreparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism - And What Comes Next by Brad OnishiScott OkamotoAsian American Apostate by Scott OkamotoChapel Probation PodcastScott Okamoto on InstagramScott Okamoto on Twitter/XThe HoldoversRustin - NetflixMama's Boy - Dustin Lance Black Documentary

Do you know if you have ever been a part of a cultish or high-demand community? Do you know what qualities to look for in a high-demand community?High-demand communities may bring images of cults with extreme behaviors, demands, and rituals to your mind. But when you examine the communities you love, some fall on the spectrum of cultish or high-demand communities. Cultish and high-demand communities fall on a spectrum, and not everyone associated with a group or organization with those tendencies necessarily falls into the trance of these spaces–but many of us do–often without noticing. Today's guest got me thinking more about the high-demand or cultish communities we choose. His most recent book was inspired by his experience watching the January 6th insurrection on TV and wondering if he had not left his high-demand faith community, would he have been at the US Capitol with many who showed up that day, including some from his former community.Bradley Onishi is a social commentator, scholar, writer, teacher, coach, and co-host of the Straight White American Jesus (SWAJ) podcast. Dr. Bradley Onishi, is the author of Preparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism - And What Comes Next. He is the co-host of the excellent Straight White American Jesus podcast. His work has appeared in the New York Times, NBC News, Politico, Rolling Stone, Huffpost, and many other outlets.  Bradley got personally drawn into evangelical Christianity as a teenager—and from a secular family—and had the strange experience of burying his part-Japanese heritage in a white coded, Christian Nationalist identity. It took him years of scholarship to see how this political ideology had been baked into the religious indoctrination. Now he's a religious studies scholar, doing work in the world from that perspective. And his struggles with all of this stuff have brought his empathy and his humility up to the surface in really profound ways.  Bradley has a lot of family history in Maui, and on his behalf and for people there who have just survived a catastrophic fire and now must bury their dead and rebuild, we would like to encourage you to consider donating to the Maui Mutual Aid Fund.  Show Notes Straight White American Jesus Preparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism--and What Comes Next Go to HelloFresh.com/50conspirituality and use code 50conspirituality for 50% off plus free shipping. We speak with Dr. Bradley Onishi, a religion scholar whose latest book, Preparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism and What Comes Next, explores the rise of the extremist religious right in America and its evolution from the 1960s through the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, 2021.We discuss his personal transformation from conservative Christian to scholar to unbeliever, his insights into January 6 and why he believes he could have been one of the insurrectionists, why evangelicals embrace conspiracy theories, the role religion played (and didn't play) in shaping the Republican party, and several interesting tidbits about everyone's favorite Family Man, James Dobson. We also delve into the American Redoubt, a survivalist and prepper movement that dreams of a Christian society within the United States, and its earnest preparations for a looming civil war.Dr. Onishi offers a stark and unsettling warning: the distrust in our civic spaces and the readiness for religious violence could indeed be harbingers of our future. The beverage we tasted in this episode is Penderyn Legend single malt Welsh whisky. To skip the tasting, go to 5:33.You can find the transcript for this episode here. Rundown -   Troubadour Dave Gunders - 06:20   "Hard of Understanding" by Dave Gunders - 21:38   Bradley Onishi - 29:40   Brad Onishi is a social commentator, scholar, writer, teacher, coach and co-host of the Straight White American Jesus (SWAJ) podcast. Raised in Orange County and deciding to commit himself to Jesus and the local evangelical church as an eighth grader, he ended up in their clergy. https://www.straightwhiteamericanjesus.com/   Onishi became Oxford educated and saw things differently. As neither fully white nor originally Christian, Onishi appreciated the otherness that Christian nationalists would just as soon not put on their same upper level. Power corrupts and White people now feel threatened.    White people have rebelled against racial integration since the 1960's and much of the Republican resistance was centered in Orange County, CA, where Nixon and Reagan lived. Republicans made a fateful choice when they chose Goldwater in 1964. A new "extremist" GOP emerged.   In Preparing for War – The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism and What Comes Next, Onishi provides evidence backed insight about America's long road to Christian nationalist violence on Jan. 6, and what happens next. https://www.amazon.com/Preparing-War-Extremist-Christian-Nationalism/dp/1506482163   Learn about Onishi's upbringing, and the reasons Orange County became an epicenter for white grievance church going. New territory with many transplants and not yet home to Catholics, Jews or others, Onishi explains the attraction of patriotic Christianity wrapped in an USA flag.   Reviewed is the rise of the Klu Klux Klan from 100 years ago in Anaheim and cities in Colorado, as well as Klan-like modern MAGA reincarnations. Racism is at the heart of Onishi's argument against MAGA. Evangelicals and too many Catholics stick with Trump as their leader.   As a youth minister and student before that, Onishi was fed a constant diet of Mel Gibson in Braveheart. The violence defending one's people was revered at his Orange County church. Back in 1964, Orange County loved Barry Goldwater.   In 1980, many religious Christian voters preferred divorced actor Ronald Reagan to pious military veteran Jimmy Carter. Nowadays, many Christians prefer Trump to Biden, the committed Catholic.   Onishi argues that the evangelical anti-abortion position was developed to gain power joining forces with fundamentalist Catholics. The power to keep white Christians on top in America was the true motivation.   Discussed is modern media and Salem Media in particular. Salem's game plan is not just to save souls for Jesus, but to get MAGA policies into law ASAP.  We discuss Hugh Hewitt and Dennis Prager.   #DenverTrumpRadio hosts are also described for their faux religiosity and willingness to tout racist lies about birtherism and rigged elections in cities with large African-American voting populaces.   The United States is becoming the Divided States of America and the show contemplates how far and low it can go and how to battle back. Listen to Brad Onishi and you'll want more at his website. https://www.bradonishi.com/   We always want more from Troubadour Dave Gunders who kicks off the show with a great discussion of Jason Aldean's controversial music video, Try That in a Small Town. Is it good old boy entertainment or something worse? And if so, so what? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1_RKu-ESCY   Hard of Understanding is a better song than Aldean's, composed and performed by Dave Gunders and would be a perfect project for a music video retort. Fellas respond to Jack Smith looming indictment number two and Judge Cannon's mid-May trial setting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw7o6KmtiDk   The Craig Silverman Show - Every Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Colorado time

Ken welcomes professor, fellow podcaster, and author Dr. Kevin McCarthy continues his quest to become Speaker of the House for a third day. After losing six votes over two days, and making yet more concessions to extremists in his party last night, he told reporters this morning he is, quote, “making progress.” The House is reconvening at this hour. Tomorrow marks the second anniversary of the attack on the US Capitol. January 6th, like September 11th or December 7th, is a date that's emblazoned in the American psyche as a pivotal moment in our nation's history. The attack on the Capitol — part of a conspiracy to overturn the 2020 presidential election — shook the foundations of American democracy. A bipartisan House Select Committee that spent 18 months investigating the attack has published an extensive and damning report that lays the blame for the insurrection squarely at the feet of former US president Donald Trump. If Republicans work out their internecine fighting over the Speakership, they have promised investigations in the new Congress that will target Joe Biden and his administration. Scholars, historians and journalists, as well as federal prosecutors, are still sorting out the actors and their motivations behind the violence on January 6th, 2021. Today on Midday, a conversation with two scholars who study the influence of Christian nationalists on the events of that day, and how they fit into the panoply of groups that organized and executed the attack. Ken welcomes professor, fellow podcaster, and author Dr. Co-host of the podcast, Straight White American Jesus, Brad Onishi returns to the VCW hall to talk about his forthcoming book (January 6, 2023) "Preparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism- And What Comes Next". While we are all seeing a rise in Christian Nationalism in our present political moment, Brad traces the history of how we got to this religious and political moment while examining his own roots being raised in southern California. We discuss the Barry Goldwater campaign, the conspiracies of the John Birch Society, Richard Nixon and the merging of conservative Evangelism fully with right-wing populism during the Ronald Reagan presidency. Over the course of this history we begin to see that, in the Trump-era, nothing really has changed that much. At the end, we also share some thoughts on the passing of Mimi Parker of Low, in light of our recent conversation with her husband Alan Sparhawk. The insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, was not a blip or an aberration. It was the logical outcome of years of a White evangelical subculture's preparation for war. Religion scholar and former insider Bradley Onishi maps the origins of White Christian nationalism and traces its offshoots in Preparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism--And What Comes Next (Broadleaf Books, 2023). Combining his own experiences in the youth groups and prayer meetings of the 1990s with an immersive look at the steady blending of White grievance politics with evangelicalism, Onishi crafts an engrossing account of the years-long campaign of White Christian nationalism that led to January 6. How did the rise of what Onishi calls the New Religious Right, between 1960 and 2015, give birth to violent White Christian nationalism during the Trump presidency and beyond? What propelled some of the most conservative religious communities in the country--communities of which Onishi was once a part--to ignite a cold civil war? Through chapters on White supremacy and segregationist theologies, conspiracy theories, the Christian-school movement, purity culture, and the right-wing media ecosystem, Onishi pulls back the curtain on a subculture that birthed a movement and has taken a dangerous turn. In taut and unsparing prose, Onishi traces the migration of many White Christians to Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming in what is known as the American Redoubt. Learning the troubling history of the New Religious Right and the longings and logic of White Christian nationalism is deeply alarming. It is also critical for preserving the shape of our democracy for years to come. Learn more about your ad choices. Magical Thinking Is Going to Kill Us All

What is power? How can power be yielded in helpful and harmful ways? Brad is joined by Dr. Stephen Backhouse, an international scholar, speaker, and podcaster. They discuss the idea of magical thinking - not in the sense of sleight of hand tricks - but in the sense of trying to bend other peoples' wills towards yours. This form of power yielding is a zero-sum game - one in which either I win and you lose, or vice versa. There is no room for dialogue, compromise, or cooperation. The goal is vanquishing the other in order to dominate. As Dr. Backhouse explains, this form of power often overtakes institutions, governments, and churches. We see it today in the rising authoritarianisms of Brazil, Hungary, and the USA. It is also rampant in Christian nationalist churches that have accepted the mission of having dominion over the earth in God's name. Brad speaks with Stanford scholar of religion Dr. Kathryn Gin Lum about her new book Heathen. They discuss how White American Christians have used the label "heathen" in order to name those they deem not only different, but in need of saving. In this context, "saving" often meant the occupation of native lands, the overtaking of entire cultures, and the exclusion of those "unassimilable" to the American way of life. Race continues to operate as a heathen inheritance in the United States, animating Americans' sense of being a world apart from an undifferentiated mass of needy, suffering peoples. Dr. Gin Lum reveals a key source of American exceptionalism and a prism through which Americans have defined themselves as a progressive and humanitarian nation even as supposed heathens have drawn on the same to counter this national myth. This is not a past phenomenon - it continues today in debates about reproductive rights and the rise of anti-Asian hate during the COVID pandemic. According to Stollar, Bacuham is a pillar in the SAHD movement, which "argues that girls should remain at home—even after they become adult women—and submissively serve their fathers until they're married." Here is how Christianity Today describes the movement: "Essentially, adherents of SAHD believe daughters should never leave the covering of their fathers until and unless they are married. One SAHD father writes: While they are preparing to be keepers of their own homes one day, until our daughters are married, they should serve as keepers at home in the house of their father. They are to be helpers to their mother and blessings to our entire family, as well as to our local church and community." R.L. Brad is joined by guest co-host Annika Brockschmidt, a historian and journalist who has written a wonderful new book about Christian nationalism in the USA. Brad and Annika begin by discussing the Texas GOP party platform, which claims Biden's election win was illegitimate, calls homosexuality "abnormal," promotes repealing the Civil Rights Act, denounces the ERA, pushes a total abortion ban, tries to set up an electoral college within Texas, and opens the door for secession from the Union. They then analyze the Carson v. Makin SCOTUS decision, which opens the door for tax money to be used to fund and pay for religious schooling. This was a stunning decision that, in the words of scholar Finbar Curtis, revolutionizes the free exercise clause and essentially changes how religious freedom is conceived in this country. In the third segment, Brad and Annika discuss an ad by Missouri Senate candidate Eric Greitens in which the candidate calls for hunting RINOs amidst a backdrop full of handheld killing machines. This dropped the week SCOTUS ruled a concealed carry law in NY unconstitutional, making it more likely that handheld killing machines will be carried in bars, restaurants, and other public places.
