Send us a textIn this episode I take you through my 5 essential pedals. These are the ones I use all the time and how I set them up. 1. Compressor PedalWhy it's important: A compressor smooths out the dynamics of your playing by limiting the loudest notes and boosting the quieter ones. It helps create a more consistent sound, adding sustain, punch, and clarity. A great tool for players who want their tone to sound polished and even, especially when fingerpicking or in clean tones.Popular choices: Keeley Compressor, MXR Dyna Comp, Wampler Ego Compressor.2. Overdrive PedalWhy it's important: An overdrive pedal is key for adding warmth and grit to your tone. Whether you're looking for classic bluesy smoothness or heavier, more saturated rock tones, overdrive is essential for shaping your distortion and helping you achieve expressive, dynamic playing.Popular choices: Ibanez Tube Screamer, Fulltone OCD, Boss OD-3.3. Reverb PedalWhy it's important: Reverb creates space and depth by simulating the natural reflections of sound in an environment. Whether you're after subtle room ambiance or lush, expansive reverb tails, this effect is essential for adding dimension to your sound and making your tone feel more alive.Popular choices: Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail, Strymon BigSky, TC Electronic Hall of Fame.4. Graphic EQ PedalWhy it's important: A graphic EQ pedal gives you control over your tone's frequency response, allowing you to shape your sound by boosting or cutting specific frequency bands. It's great for fine-tuning your tone, compensating for room acoustics, or dialing in specific sounds for different musical contexts. It also acts as a powerful tool to carve out space in the mix when playing in a band.Popular choices: Boss GE-7, MXR Ten Band EQ, Behringer EQ700.5. Looper PedalWhy it's important: A looper pedal allows you to record short sections of your playing and loop them in real time, creating layers of sound. This is great for practice, songwriting, or performance, and it enables you to build complex, evolving compositions on the fly. It's a versatile pedal for solo artists and can be used creatively to add texture, rhythm, or melody to your performance.Popular choices: TC Electronic Ditto, Boss RC-3, Electro-Harmonix 720.Honorable Mention: Delay PedalWhy it's important: Delay is often used in conjunction with reverb to add depth, space, and rhythmic complexity. While it's not in your top 5, it's still worth considering for creating ambient soundscapes, rhythmic echo patterns, or lead lines with a sense of movement.Popular choices: Boss DD-7, MXR Carbon Copy, Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail.Download the Triad Method: https://thebluesguitarshow.com/the-triad-method/Support the showTo get your hands on THE TRIAD METHOD: https://thebluesguitarshow.com/product/the-triad-method/Become a Blues Guitar Show Member: https://www.buzzsprout.com/950998/subscribeHead over to www.thebluesguitarshow.com to subscribe to the mailing list

You may have never stopped to think about how much the creative process promotes innovative thinking and problem solving skills in the music room. As a music educator, it's important to put on your creative mask first, then you'll have so much more to give to your students. Remember that musical studies are both a science and an art and while students are involved in the creative process, it's about honoring the process over the product or performance. Allowing students time to explore creatively, have input on what they're learning, and giving them a seat at the table is so important to this process. In this episode, we'll explore all of this and so much more. Initially a visual artist, Kathryn Patricia Cobbler sees the world through shape and line—a vision that has laid the groundwork for many of her musical creative projects. Kathryn's current explorations of the loop pedal have led to the development of her workshop/concert, Sound In Living Colour, where she draws connection between the technical use of the paint brush and her viola bow, guiding her listeners through a music inspired painting experience. After switching to music as her artistic path, she would receive degrees in viola performance from Western University (B.M.) and the University of Ottawa (M.M.). Ms. Cobbler has also performed as an orchestral musician, appearing within the Toronto Symphony's Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, and the Ottawa Jazz Orchestra. A native of Windsor, Ontario, she makes her home in Ottawa. She performs on a viola by luthier Sibylle Ruppert and a Boss RC-30 loop pedal. Kathryn Patricia's Bio: Hailing from Canada's Capital region, Loop pedal violist, composer, and educator Kathryn Patricia Cobbler has crafted a singular niche in improvisation and classical performance. She obsesses over creating uniquely arresting soundscapes, whether in solo recitals, composing for theatre, performing at art installations, and more. A recipient of one of Ottawa Arts Council's Emerging Artist awards, she has been featured in Canada's most notable Concert Series, including Chamberfest, Music and Beyond, NUMUS Music Festival, and the Ottawa New Music Creators' Analogue Series to name a few. As a seasoned performer, speaker, presenter and workshop facilitator, Kathryn has given masterclasses at Carleton University and was a speaker for the Canadian Network for Arts and Learning Convergence Conference. As a performing artist and educator, Ms. Cobbler is an artist on the MASC Artist roster and Teaching Artist at the National Arts Centre. As a composer, Kathryn has been featured in the Boston based Concert series, Castle of Our Skin's Black Composers Miniature Challenge, which resulted in the world premier of her piece A Home Called ‘Wander'. Kathryn continues to be inspired by the next generation of composers and improvisers, having served as an adjudicator for the Canadian Music Showcase and NUMUS Emerging Improvisor competition. Kathryn Patricia's most recent multidisciplinary collaboration was through an artist in residency with the Ottawa Dance Directive composing and collaborating for the premiere of Dream & True North envisioned and choreographed by Elizabeth Emond-Stevenson. Initially a visual artist, Kathryn sees the world through shape and line—a vision that has laid the groundwork for many of her musical creative projects. Dave's fresh out of the studio at The Noise Floor where he spent the weekend recording a new album with Bitter Pill. He's got a lot of takeaways to share from that experience, and some new things to look forward to, as well. Then he and Paul dig into – and praise – the concept of a band. What does that mean? How do you define it? How do you protect it? Those are the questions they begin to answer... or at least get clarity about asking! Dr. Yaba Blay is the Dan Blue Endowed Chair in Political Science at North Carolina Central University. An ethnographer, scholar, and content creator, her scholarship centers on global Black identities and the politics of embodiment, with particular attention given to hair and skin color politics. In 2012, Dr. Blay partnered with CNN to produce Black in America: Who is Black in America? – a television documentary inspired by her book, (1)ne Drop: Shifting the Lens on Race. In it, she explores the interconnected nuances of skin color politics and Black racial identity, and challenges narrow perceptions of Blackness as both an identity and a lived reality. Named to The Root 100 (2014), an annual list of top Black influencers, she is one of today's leading voices on colorism and global skin color politics and, to date, her commentary has been featured across some of today's leading media outlets including: CNN, BET, MSNBC, NPR, The New York Times, Ebony Magazine, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Root, Huffington Post Live, Colorlines, Al Jazeera America. Applauded by O, The Oprah Magazine for her social media activism, Dr. Blay is the creator and producer of a number of online campaigns including #PrettyPeriod - a visual celebration of dark-skinned Black beauty - and #ProfessionalBlackGirl - a webseries and multi-platform digital community dedicated to celebrating Black Girl culture. Professional Black Girl is a multi-platform digital community that celebrates the everyday magic of Black women and girls! By announcing ourselves “Professional Black Girls,” we assert an unapologetic identity in a world that too often tries to tell us how we “ought to” act. We know that “acting” like anything other than ourselves robs us of our freedom, so instead, we choose, embrace, and celebrate who we are. We are professional code-switchers. We hold Ph.Ds and listen to trap music. We twerk and we work. We are Professional Black Girls. Jillian Bessett: The voice in the intro and outro belong to songwriter Jillian Bessett. Sonya's work as a highly sought-after award-winning Performance Poet, activist, and transformational leader continues to have global reach. Sonya is a former National and International poetry slam champion and author of two books, including The Body is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love. She is an educator and thought leader who has enlightened and inspired organizations, audiences and individuals from board rooms to prisons, universities to homeless shelters, elementary schools to some of the biggest stages in the world. Tarana Burke 's passion for community organizing began in the late 1980s, when she joined a youth development organization called 21st Century and led campaigns around issues like racial discrimination, housing inequality and economic justice. Her career took a turn toward supporting survivors of sexual violence upon moving to Selma, Alabama, to work for 21st Century. She encountered dozens of black girls who were sharing stories of sexual violence and abuse, stories she identified with very well. She realized too many girls were suffering through abuse without access to resources, safe spaces and support, so in 2007 she created Justbe Inc., an organization committed to the empowerment and wellness of black girls. The impacts of Justbe Inc. are widespread, as the program, which was adopted by every public school in Selma, has hundreds of alumni who have gone on to thrive and succeed in various ways. Burke's role as the senior director at Girls for Gender Equity in Brooklyn, NY, an intergenerational nonprofit dedicated to strengthening local communities by creating opportunities for young women and girls to live self-determined lives, is a continuation of what she considers her life's work. Since #MeToo, the movement she created more than ten years ago, became a viral hashtag, she has emerged as a global leader in the evolving conversation around sexual violence and the need for survivor-centered solutions. Her theory of using empathy to empower survivors is changing the way the nation and the world think about and engage with survivors. Her belief that healing isn't a destination but a journey has touched and inspired millions of survivors who previously lived with the pain, shame and trauma of their assaults in isolation. I like to look at them as when they're little as little living Zen masters that are sort of parachuted into our lives to push all our buttons and see how we're going to work with the challenges they throw at us in addition to, of course, having to put food on the table, pay the rent, build a career, have a loving relationship, you know …"

This is an original arrangment of "Big Bottom" by Spinal Tap. It's sort of a jazz-blues -- or blues-jazz, really -- version, with layers upon layers of bass (as many as seven bass parts simultaneously). I think this arrangement really captures the true soul of the original composition, expressing the theme as words never could; hence, the bass guitar does all of the singing. You might not be able to hear the song well on your crummy computer speakers. Try headphones. Created using a BOSS RC-2 LoopStation pedal, Variax Bass, and PODxt Live. The guitar models used (in order) are MiniMoog synth, Fender Jazz, Fender Fretless Jazz, Hagstrom H8 8-string, and Hamer B12A 12-string.
The most-requested song so far was, of course, "Free Bird," by Lynyrd Skynyrd. I took a slightly different approach to this one: I played five different guitar parts, all live: bass, clean electric, acoustic, slide, and solo. It may not be the best one-man live version of Free Bird, but it may well be the most ... comprehensive. To get different parts playing at the same time I used a BOSS RC-2 LoopStation pedal, and to play different guitars (bass [which is a Firebird detuned an octave], acoustic, various electrics) I use the Line 6 Variax modeling guitar, and to switch between the guitars and amp/fx I used the Line 6 PODxt Live. Oh, and that nifty slide I am using, that you can flip around to play chords, is the Axys slide by Shubb. "Free Bird" was requested by Oliver Patrick Threshie, and neeracher. So BLAME THEM.

This is the second live improvised track I recorded using a Boss RC-50 looping pedal. This is more of a sketch than anything serious and is a good demonstration of how I come up with guitar solos. I usually work them out like this and then refine them over time. However, this example has all the mistakes left in and a little bit of distortion too. Enjoy!
