“The new variant of brand of calling, the thing that's kind of in the early stages, is this thing called BCID,” says Gerry Christensen of Caller ID Reputation. “Have you heard about BCID? Not yet. BCID is a term that the CTIA has given to RCD-based brand of calling, which is their rich call data version. That one, rather than relying on out-of-band signaling and a proprietary approach, Instead, it relies on in-band signaling through stir-shaking and a highly open approach. “ In this podcast, recorded at ITEXPO, Gerry looks at the dichotomy of generating revenue with branded calling. We look at the Doro Leva L20. See more about the phone on their website here. Doro Leva L20 review This is a tough, robust phone. If you drop it, short of putting it under an elephants foot and asking it to stamp it, you should be okay. Screens are not likely to break easily, nor lose touch or sensitivity options too quickly. The sound is loud, and the screen is big. Yes we can use reading glasses too as we approach our slightly diminished reading ability, but even so, this device is aiming to head off those issues in the first place. Our team testers, several decades younger than others among us, felt it was a fun, and intuitive device to use. In previous rounds of testing the phones, one of the challenges has been to then get it into the hands of the octogenarians and other related decades. This time around maybe the use-cases also work if you expand them to include robust scenarios themselves, rather than older users themselves. In this context the phone could be very useful, perhaps as a spare, backup phone, or as an alternate for days, like being up on a roof, or a mountain, where you value robustness, audio quality, and overall durability. The brand and the products themselves remain an interesting one to watch and our team is growing in interest and positive feelings towards their devices. Sometimes you don't need to be holding or using a smarter, more sleek but more fragile device, when, the job you are trying to do needs an effective spanner/tool rather than a delicate, and easily broken top of the line device. It will be interesting to see where Doro goes, and how their products evolve. Oh My God! All their clothes vanished. What was I to do?In 25 parts, edited from the works of FinalStand.Listen and subscribe to the ► Podcast at Connected..“Living every moment like it is your last is less attractive tomorrow.”(Still Wednesday)Katrina had left for wherever she snuck off to; I suggested to Aya it was a game room, Aya suggested it was as torture chamber; only to return when the next turn of the screws came. I was informed I had a visitor coming up by the name of Libra Chalmers plus a guest. Quickly enough they appeared. The guest turned out to be Brooke Lee."Who are these two?" Aya glibly spoke as the two Vassar girls walked into the room."Hello Libra," I greeted my almost date from last night. "Hello Ms. Lee," I said to Brooke."It's Brooke," Brooke smiled at me; she was hungry and scenting around for something remarkably like me."I'm happy to see you; oh; this is my guardian and protector, Aya Ruger," I made the introductions. "No lie, Aya has been keeping up with my workload while I've been on 'light' duty. Aya, this is Libra Chalmers and Brooke Lee, both from Vassar College. Brooke is Trent's friend and Libra had mercy on me Tuesday night and kept me from being a 'fifth' wheel.""I'm actually Trent's fiancé," Brooke corrected."Fascinating," I lied. Oh fuck, that was Not good."Cool. I'm happy to see the both of you, but what brings you to my office today?" I continued."Well, I showed up to ask for Trent and Libra asked for you," Brooke gave a sly smile."The thing was," Libra picked up the tale, "they were looking up Trent, but the front desk knew exactly who and where you were; so we came here first." My mind was busily working out how to pull Aya aside to give her a friendly warning when Katrina waltzed in."Ladies, this is my boss, Katrina Love, Head of Executive Services for Havenstone," I plastered a smile on my face."Katrina, this is Brooke Lee and Libra Chalmers. I met them Tuesday night," I kept things simple. Doom was impatient."Brooke is Trent's fiancé," Aya chimed in gleefully. She wasn't being malicious. She just didn't know any better. Katrina had been in the process of giving some congenial nods. She stopped and turned on a dime. Damn it."Really?" Katrina's interest was piqued."Yes," Brooke beamed. She brandished her engagement ring in Katrina's face. Better yet, Katrina 'ooh'ed and 'aah'ed then spun on me."Cáel, I didn't know Trent was engaged," Katrina pierced me with those lethal ocular devices."Yeah, I bet you didn't," I groaned. "I only found out a moment ago." Trent had lied on his dating survey; slash application to Havenstone. They kinda/sorta made damn sure we had no external female attachments. It meant less bodies to dispose of if things went wrong.I couldn't understand how they missed it then a curious custom/lifeline reared its ugly head."Brooke, that's your 'promise' ring, right?" I probed. "I'm sure Trent would get you a bigger rock for the actual engagement.""Yes," Brooke confirmed. "We've decided to make the official engagement when our families take the Christmas Holiday at Hilton Head."How could I express to Brooke that Christmas with Trent at Hilton Head was a rapidly vanishing dream? Katrina resumed her stroll to her desk."Katrina," I started my appeal. My argument was going to be that 'promise' rings didn't really count even though I knew her omission on his survey/application was bad enough already. Brian was different. If he chose to 'follow his career', she'd shed the prerequisite 17 tears and happily get on with her life. Girls like Brooke came looking and that wouldn't do."No," Katrina didn't even turn around. When she got to her desk, the phone calls began. Brooke was starting to realize something had happened. I gained a level of importance that extended beyond my bedroom sexpertise."Cáel, is something wrong?" Libra took my hand in hers."Trent may have neglected to mention some things during his job interview," I explained."Like?" Libra was getting concerned."Like the existence of Brooke," I answered. See, if Trent had written down his acquaintance to Brooke, Havenstone would have investigated her in the same way they investigated my mentor, Dr. Kimberly Geisler. She had admitted to the length, depth and termination of our affair. The issue of her teaching me anything besides sex had never come up."What?" Brooke grew indignant. Not with Trent, but with me. See, I was still a peon in her eyes and casting dispersions on her guy, who she knew and trusted."Brooke," I sighed, "did any Havenstone personnel talk to you about Trent?""No," she admitted."Every single woman I was ever with was questioned about me and my relationship to them," I explained. "Trust me; that was a really long list." Libra had the answer to that confusion. She pulled out her phone and got a busy signal; that would be Havenstone' now-active jamming devices."What's the number?" I asked Libra. She was momentarily annoyed; then suspicion kicked in. She gave me the number. Caller ID indicated it was Marla, Libra's sister. I gave the phone up."Marla," Libra began, "did anyone from Havenstone Commercial Investments ever talk to you about Cáel?""Umm, is he in trouble because of what I said?" Marla asked."What did you say?" Libra eyed me."I said he was a total asshole who broke my heart and given the opportunity I wouldn't mind watching he die a painful death," she confessed. "Only later did I realize I missed him and felt sorry about what I said.""Do you know if they talked to any of his other former girlfriends?" Libra inquired."I am absolutely sure they talked to at least one other person," Marla mumbled. Her Aunt."Who? I need to talk to them," Libra continued."That wouldn't be wise," Marla responded. "Suffice it to say they didn't give a glowing review either." Libra hung up and gave me back my phone."Cáel, do you have a problem with women?" Brooke glowered at me."Yes, there are so many of them," I shrugged. "That seems to be my main issue.""Cáel, how many women have you been with?" Libra mused."Around 200," I acceded."200! Holy Shit!" Libra gasped. Out of the blue,"Of those, how many have dumped you for cheating only to come back to you later?" Katrina postulated."Around 40," I recalled."That's my Daddy!" Aya crowed proudly."What?" Brooke boggled."Not what you think!" I insisted. "Not what you think!""Aya is my niece," Katrina explained. "Cáel is not her biological father. He is her friend, paternal guide and guardian.""Aya and I are in negotiations about me eventually marrying her mother, but I have assured her that is years and years off," I added."Cáel is not my real Daddy," Aya clarified. "He lets me pretend that he is.""Besides Cáel, does that 200 include the past month?" Katrina diverted the conversation."Well; 200 as in closer to 200 than 300," I grinned weakly."How did you graduate?" Libra followed along."I have a lot of stamina," I pointed out. Tessa Carmichael glided into the room."Brooke Lee?" she greeted the not-here-for-me girl."Yes? Do I know you?" Brooke was getting nervous and snippy."I'm Tessa Carmichael, Director of Human Resources for Havenstone. I handled the final interview process for Trent Grant," she smiled with deceptive warmth. She was furious. I could tell, having a long history with women in such moods."Is that Lee; L-E-E?" Tessa continued."Yes, what is this about?" Brooke persisted."You and Mr. Grant are in a long term relationship?" Tessa asked next."Answer my question," Brooke snapped. Thankfully Tessa wasn't Elsa."Trent lied on both his initial application and then twice in the interview process," Tessa relayed calmly."About dating me?" Brooke was confused."We will explain in a moment," Tessa smiled and patted Brooke on the upper arm.Brooke and Libra were more poised than I believed was warranted. Suddenly, I peeled back eleven days of experience and realized they assumed that Aya's presence was some sort of armor against violence. Whoops. Olympia Shore entered the room followed by Trent. Bright yet careless, he immediately clued in on the crisis."Brooke;” Trent mumbled. Olympia shut the door once Trent was too far inside to run."Trent, what is going on? They say you didn't list me as an acquaintance and somehow that's important," Brooke grumbled."I; um; I can explain," Trent was addressing; the room?"Be at peace, Trent," Tessa took over. This was her job and her fuck-up. "We only need your assurance that your relationship with Ms. Lee was terminated before you signed your contract with Havenstone Commercial Investments." Trent was looking for the right answer that would make everyone happy, but there wasn't one.Had he warned me yesterday that Brooke was his lady, I could have warned Brooke to NEVER come here. Trent hadn't done that because it would have necessitated him explaining to Brooke that he had denied her existence in order to get a cushy job. Trent had deluded himself into thinking he could have it both ways, probably because lying had always worked before."I think there has been a misunderstanding," Trent began. The most important thing in the world to Trent was Trent and he could outfox these backwoods feminists. "I am willing to submit my resignation immediately over this unfortunate mistake." That was a feint. Sadly, the important ladies had zero faith in his words and had already decided his fate. Moron.

Some scammers love the challenge of deceiving those they target while others are forced to scam. Those that thrive off of destroying others try to heighten your emotions very quickly. Both excited and angry responses can get you into making irrational decisions. Today's guest is Doug Shadel. Doug is a former fraud investigator and special assistant to the Attorney General at the Washington State Attorney General's office. He served as state director for AARP Washington and Strategy Director for AARP's national anti-fraud efforts. Doug has collaborated on numerous educational videos and academic studies and co-authored five books about fraud. He also co-authored the AARP Fraud Frontier 2021 Report. He is currently Managing Director of Fraud Prevention Strategies LLC, a Seattle-based consulting firm. Show Notes: [1:08] - Doug shares his background and career in fighting fraud. [2:43] - Robo-calls have been a long lasting problem that Doug has been working on with AARP and Nomorobo. [7:11] - Over the years, Doug has interviewed numerous scammers. They all say their primary goal is to get a victim in a heightened emotional state. [9:07] - Doug describes the research that shows when people are in a heightened emotional state, they are more likely to fall victim to a scam. [10:57] - Block the incoming robocalls to begin with to help avoid a scammer manipulating you into a heightened emotional state. [13:17] - It still is very dangerous to answer these phone calls because a lot of them are really persuasive and really good at what they do. [14:34] - There isn't a specific demographic profile. Doug explains what people who fall victim to a scam have in common. [16:49] - The FCC has come down hard on robocallers, but this has just caused scammers to be more careful and even more skilled. [18:09] - Have you recently received calls asking for a donation? Doug describes how these work. [21:12] - The number one red flag of a robocall is the threat of loss. [25:22] - Caller ID is not reliable. It is very common and easy for scammers to spoof a call. [27:48] - There are some legitimate needs for people to be able to spoof a call. [29:42] - Assume it is a scam if you did not initiate the contact. [33:08] - By and large, scammers will not cause violence on a victim, even if they threaten them. They follow the path of least resistance. [36:02] - Doug describes some software he uses to edit videos that incorporates AI. These tools are great, but are also used by scammers. [39:26] - Grandparent scams are really common. Doug describes what people have said after falling victim. [40:40] - There is an illusion of invulnerability. If you are convinced that you are not vulnerable to something, you won't do anything to prevent it. [43:04] - There's a lot more money for scammers to make in scamming an employee of a large company than individuals. [46:10] - The pandemic also had a big impact on the scamming industry. [50:50] - The AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline is 1-877-908-3360. [53:00] - Always report a scam when you know of one. It helps more than you know. Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey. A stolen password can be all it takes for hackers to disrupt a life, a business, or the world. The safeguarding of our identity has never been more critical. Constantly evolving AI-enabled DEEPFAKES are now creating enormous security and safety challenges. Enter iVALT, a revolutionary game-changer in cyber security. iVALT Founder & CEO Baldev Krishan Ph.D. joined me to talk about their groundbreaking solution. He is a 2X Nominated “Entrepreneur of the Year” in Silicon Valley with 20 patents. Fixing the Weakest Link. Over $170B was spent last year in cybersecurity, yet some of the biggest failures came from the “weakest link in cybersecurity” – a simple phone call by a hacker. Before iVALT, there was no way to decisively identify the person at the other end of a phone call. Caller ID is easily spoofed, SIM swaps are common, KYC can be compromised, and hackers are highly skilled in just using psychological manipulation to get what they want. The iVALT mobile app empowers individuals and customer facing workers to demand clear identity on any call (including biometrics) in 1-click. Most social engineering attacks could be stopped by iVALT before any real damage can be done. Baldev and I talked about the alarming reality of identity theft, highlighting how even seemingly secure methods like multi-factor authentication fall short in the face of sophisticated hackers. I myself just went through 'cyber hell' when a hacker stole my password from my web hosting site and started buying domains around the world with my credit card. To prove my own identity and get my own website back and functioning, took me one month of pure aggravation! It was honestly outrageous! Baldev revealed the flaws in current authentication systems and the urgent need for a more robust solution. What Is The Solution? “iVALT”, said Baldev, “is a game-changing technology offering five plus factors of authentication." “Our platform leverages biometric data and other variables to create a virtually impenetrable authentication process.” It seems that with a simple app installation and one-time setup, users can bid farewell to the hassle of passwords and embrace seamless, secure authentication. With five patents granted and ten pending, iVALT is uniquely positioned to provide the strongest level of identity verification and access management at scale. something no one else in the $30 billion identity market can currently provide he said. Thought more people should know more about this innovation. iVALT is emerging as a pioneer in shaping the future of identity protection. Enjoy being one of the first to know about this game changer and meet Founder/CEO Baldev Krishan in this podcast of our live conversation on The Debbie Nigro Show.
Episode: 2779 Smartphones/Wise Phones, our changing relationship with phones over the last century. Today, smartphones vs. wise phones.
Mary Clark is the New President of Numeracle “Whether it's a call or a text message or an email, our vision is to restore trust, says Numeracle President and COO, Cathy Clark. At the recent Enterprise Connect 2024 event, Numeracle, an innovator in Verified Identity and Entity Identity Management for communications, announced a series of innovations and initiatives designed to specifically help enterprises preserve and improve the value of their contact centers and other parts of their communications complex, by ensuring trust and transparency with every phone call made. “We can help make sure that enterprises are not mislabeled to spam when they're trying to reach consumer, that they're appropriately labeled and get through to that consumer.” Clark is Numeracle's new president. In this podcast, Clark shares her insights as person with a deep background in the telecom industry and perspective on the problem of solving fraud in communications and returning trust to all calls. Trusted Logo and Name, Test How You're Being Seen Clark explains how Numeracle's approach ultimately places a logo, the trusted brand logo of the enterprise, on the phone of the customer or call recipient. “You will see the logo and the reason for the call and the name of the company, giving the person on the other end, that consumer, myself, my kids, my parents, your parents, the opportunity to feel more confident in answering that call.” Numerical also offers Number Check, where organizations can test how their calls are delivered and displayed on consumer devices, utilizing screenshots of real phone calls across all top 3 wireless carriers. Channel Opportunity Clark also reaches out to the partner community with an opportunity. Organizations have huge investments in their brand and companies of all sizes need to be able to reach customers, clients, patients, students, citizens, vendors, and contractors via calls that will be answered and texts that will be seen and read. https://www.numeracle.com/contact-us.

Establishing a trust framework: “It is what it is because there's just no trust. And so that's actually the topic of conversation I'd like to have with you today is how do we create that trust?” Gerry Christensen will be presenting at the Cloud Connections event this April. “I would love to see somebody do a study on this, is to figure out, quantitatively speaking, what is the impact of legitimate businesses not being able to reach their customers for a variety of reasons,” says Gerry Christensen, Head of Partnerships and Regulatory Compliance, Caller ID Reputation. A lot of studies have looked at the direct damage fraudulent activity has made. However, what about the cost of lost communication, where the communication attempt was legitimate? “We now have a culture of not answering the phone.” Recently, while traveling for the ITEXPO in Florida, Gerry and his wife visited a Publix supermarket, where Gerry's bank decided the use, their card might be a potential fraud. Probably, everyone has had the experience, especially while traveling, of having a normal transaction in place that you're not normally at, being flagged. But what happened next gets to the heart of the problem. The bank issued a fraud alert text that Gerry did not respond to because the fraud alert text was, itself, determined to be spam by Gerry's carrier. A live example of how legitimate business transactions are being disrupted by the degradation of basic real rime communications. Adverse call labeling can occur at the wrong time and place, and for the wrong party. “It is, what it is, because there's just no trust. And so that's the topic of conversation I'd like to have with you today is how do we create that trust?” “How can we get together, as an industry, to provide a variety of solutions that any one of these solutions by themselves would be very helpful but taken together and optimized as a whole would be extremely helpful for enterprise.” Read more on Caller ID Reputation Visit www.calleridreputation.com
VYS0036 | Infinite Game - Vayse to Face with Joseph Matheny - Show Notes Some rare art transcends reality, some even rarer art seems to create a new reality altogether - the work of Joseph Matheny does both of these things while embracing the trickster spirit inherent in the magickal traditions in which his work has its roots. Joseph talks to Hine and Buckley about Ong's Hat, his "living book" project, widely recognised as the first Alternate Reality Game, and how it took on a life of it's own, not only for the people who were playing it but also for the people who created it. The conversation also turns to synchronicity and how his recent work, the Liminal Cycle, seems to generate synchronicity in the lives of those who engage with it, how his work connects so closely to magick, nature and theatre, his experiences in the North Pole and how they affected his writing, the use of magic in political systems and how the internet we know and love (to hate) today retains the legacy of the ritual magicians and DnD enthusiasts who created it... When I was a kid, I always got excited when the phone rang. You never knew who was calling. Today, thanks to modern technology, we usually know who's trying to reach out. Of course, 90% of the calls are now spam. Few of us even answer the phone. So when my cell phone rang on my way to work yesterday, I looked at the screen, and it displayed the words; No Called ID. Normally, I'd dismiss the call and move on, But for some reason, I decided to answer that call. And, for a change, I'm glad that I did... Begins with KYC register numbers, continues with active management. “What does it take to get to the next level,” asks Gerry Christensen, Head of Caller ID Reputation Partnerships and Expert in Communications Identity and Trust at Caller ID Reputation. When VoIP was first invented, it did not come with end-to-end caller identification. The new technology offered what Gerry describes as a blessing and a curse: basically, unlimited cheap calling, but this also meant that the cost speed bump was removed for people calling for less than legitimate reasons. Can we return to the world of fifteen years ago, when people answered the phone? “That's where Caller Reputation comes in,” says Gerry. “We help ensure that the wanted business calls get through.” In this podcast, we learn how Caller ID Reputation begins with their client registering their phone numbers. “We monitor those numbers. And we manage and we remediate, where necessary.” Gerry explains that their process shows customers on What's happening, and then answer the question Why. Dashboard Caller ID Reputation offers customers a dashboard, proving real time status on numbers in use and offers clients guidance towards best practices. Clients get visibility, sound advice and help, essentially to restoring and maintaining the corporate reputation connected with their numbers and name. Partner Platform Gerry also discusses how these services could be a part of a diversified channel partner's portfolio. Visit www.calleridreputation.com
Is your organization's caller reputation suffering? Might need a clean up. “Whether you realize it or not, you have a reputation,” says Gerry Christensen, Head of Caller ID Reputation Partnerships and Expert in Communications Identity and Trust. “And I would say that companies need to be cognizant of the fact that their numbers have issues, that their number need to be cleaned up.” Gerry points out that these issues re typically not the fault of the company but rather the unintended consequences of adverse call labeling that can end up tagging legitimate calls from legitimate organizations, as spam. And to make things worse, an organization can be experiencing this with zero awareness. Meanwhile, that organization's ability to contact customers, suppliers, vendors, partners, investors, or anyone else, is being degraded. “Some legitimate businesses are being hit by this in the sense that their calls are being labeled when they shouldn't be.” In this podcast recorded at the recent Mobile World Congress, Gerry walks us through how Caller ID Reputation helps customers figure out where they are with both a treatment and analytics side. We then learn how there are self-serve SaaS and managed service options. Caller ID Reputation can identify an issue and have that issue mitigated, in very short order, often on the same day. An organization with issues, that it was not even aware of, in the morning, can have the same issues resolved by the end of the same day. We learn that the service is available and affordable to businesses of all sides. With over 3.7 million flags identified to date, Caller ID Reputation protects the integrity of businesses by identifying flags across the major carriers, data sources, and mobile call-blocking apps & operating systems, giving a complete view of an organization's number health. Caller ID Reputation's health checks of outbound numbers at the geographic, device type, and even carrier level make it the only truly ubiquitous service of its kind in the US and represents the last mile of the call flow, giving businesses control over how they get displayed across the telephony channel. The organization is committed to bringing transparency and visibility to legitimate enterprises with unique technology that increases contact rates, improves brand reputation, and optimizes outbound calling performance. In-house industry experts, Brett Nemeroff & Pierce Gorman, delve into the intricate world of CNAM and caller ID. In this episode, they trace the evolution of caller ID technology and discuss why it no longer reliably informs us about the source of a call. Explore why this has become one of the most misunderstood technologies in the telecom space, and what can be done to remedy this confusion. Additionally we envision the future of phone calls and the telecom industry, focusing on how to advance with integrity and expertise. Listen now for insights that transcend numbers, providing a holistic understanding of a vital aspect of our connected world.
The Next Generation of Caller ID is all about KYC...is all about Vetted Identity? Darth Vader. No, really! Brett Nemeroff, VP of Engineering, Voice of Numeracle, was putting together a slide deck for the company's masterclass series, on caller ID when Darth Vader called. That was the name being displayed as the incoming call on the Brett's phone. Brett answered the call, where Mr. Vader graciously explained that he's a real estate broker, that, with non-telecom engineering skills, simply logged into his account and set his name as Darth Vader. “It just underscores the problem with caller-Id, that it's not a source we can trust,” says Nemeroff. “It does not take a tremendous amount of technical competence to figure out how to change your name and to ultimately how to change it to something that might make it more likely to get answered by somebody.” In this podcast, Brett discusses how this degradation of the caller-ID service has impacted the utility of by phone communications. Basically, people have lost trust in being able to know who'd calling. That, combined with an ocean of nuisance and scam calls, has devastated the utility of simple outbound calling as a way of communicating. “It all starts with KYC, Know Your Customer,” says Brett. Brett discusses guidance on understanding and defending privacy and security in a world of continuous changes and challenges, as well as the responsibilities and roles in this defense. We get insights into how Numeracle's Entity Identity Management™ (EIM) and Verified Identity™ associate and manage the identity of communications, supporting evolving regulations and standards. Brett offers a perspective on the future of phone calls and the telecommunications industry, including an understanding of how to progress forward with expertise and integrity Numeracle is an industry pioneer and leader with actionable solutions for legal callers that prioritizes their calling identity as the foundation to restoring trust in the voice channel and to their calls by removing barriers, like improper spam labels, from harming their phone numbers. Numeracle's Entity Identity Management™ (EIM) platform puts enterprise brands, BPOs, and service providers in direct control of their identity, which we vet and verify. Our EIM platform can also be used to manage branded communications, to improve call reputation with blocking and labeling prevention and spam label remediation, and we provide visibility into call display to ensure brand identity is presented as intended, with transparency and consistency. Our KYC-based identity vetting and verification is the cornerstone of the platform; developed in support of evolving federal regulations and telecom standards.

It's tax season and we want you to avoid being a victim of tax fraud. As we record this episode, we are a week away from tax day. However the information in this episode is good year round. So if you hear it in a best of episode, it still applies. Since 2018, more than 75,000 victims have lost $28 million to scammers impersonating the IRS over the phone, email, texts and more. That's what the FTC says (the Federal Trade Commission) which enforces consumer protection laws, including those against fraud. The true number is certainly higher because of victims who don't make reports. What the IRS won't do 1)The IRS won't call you. 2)The IRS won't text you. 3) The IRS won't email you. 4)The IRS won't call and threaten that the police are going to arrest you. 5) The IRS won't call and ask for an immediate payment on a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. 6) The IRS won't threaten to suspend your license. The IRS can't suspend your license. 7) The IRS won't say your account is on hold. 8)The IRS won't text with a message “Unusual Activity Report” with a link to click. 9) The IRS won't threaten deportation. Why? The IRS cannot revoke immigration status. 10)The IRS won't threaten to suspend your Social Security Number. They can't do that. 11)The IRS won't email you and say “We recalculated your tax return and you need to click this link to claim the higher refund.” Why? The IRS doesn't email. 12)The IRS will not email you, text you or call you saying 'This is the Bureau of Tax Enforcement, and we're putting a lien or levy on your assets'. Why? The IRS doesn't email , text or in general call. There is no Bureau of Tax Enforcement. 13) The IRS won't email or text you 'Click here to see some details about your tax refund'. Why? The IRS doesn't email or text. These emails or texts are intended to trick the reader into clicking on links that lead to a fake IRS-like website and expose the user to malware. The IRS does not use email, text messages or social media to discuss tax debts or refunds with taxpayers. How do I know this? I'm quoting the IRS website. What you should know about these calls 1)Caller ID can be faked. Just because your Caller ID says IRS, it doesn't mean it's the IRS. 2)Ask anyone claiming to be the IRS for their name, badge number and callback number. 3)You can verify if someone is real by calling the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484. Link to report a scam here. .https://www.tigta.gov/reportcrime-misconduct How the IRS will contact you if they need to contact you 1)They will send a letter. 2)They will send another letter. 3) If several letters go unanswered, they might call or they could come to your house.4) BUT THE IRS WILL ONLY COME TO YOUR HOUSE AFTER THEY HAVE CALLED FIRST TO SET UP AN APPOINTMENT AND THEY WILL ONLY CALL AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS BY MAIL. Let's say you owe unpaid taxes 1)You can appeal if you think the IRS is wrong. 2)If you do owe money, you can work out a payment plan. IRS at 800-829-1040. Part 1 of 2 “Caller ID has been a bit of an evolution,” says Alex Carter of Numeracle. Over time, and with the rise of mobility, many recipients of calls have lost the advantages that caller ID once promised: knowing who's calling. Carter discusses how Numeracle is restoring confidence and offering a path for enterprises to strengthen their outbound calling effectiveness, not to mention, enhancing their brand, brand reputation and customer experiences. Every year, the IRS collects about $4 trillion in taxes and gives out more than 1 trillion in refunds. That's a lot of money changing hands. Whenever there's a lot of cash to be had, that's when scam artists come out of the woodwork … and this tax season is no different. Rob tells you what they're up to, so you don't get taken. This is Faith and Finance - biblical wisdom for your financial journey.Romans 13:1 is a good reminder of how Christians should deal with civil authority. It reads, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” Of course, being “subject to” includes paying taxes. We should always pay what we rightly owe, and we should rightly expect a refund when we've paid too much. Unfortunately, scammers don't see it that way and are always on the lookout for ways to separate you from your money at tax time.Tax refund fraud - If scam artists gets your Social Security number, they can file a false tax return and get your refund. Actually, they often get more than a legitimate refund by claiming low income and a lot of deductions. Later, when you file, the IRS kicks back your return and you're left with a mess to sort out. You can avoid this by getting an Identity Protection PIN from the IRS before filing. It's a 6-digit number to verify your identity that only you and the IRS know. You can sign up for a tax PIN number at IRS.gov.Defraud people with fake charity scams - Scammers set up fraudulent charities that lure good-hearted people into making donations. Donors may think they can claim those contributions on their tax returns but when the IRS discovers a charity is a fake, it could set you up for an audit. To prevent this, it's always a good idea to thoroughly check out any nonprofit organization you're thinking about donating to. The Bible tells us we're to be “wise as serpents.” The IRS has set up a tax-exempt organizations search tool so you can check out legitimate charities. You can find that IRS.gov as well. You also find legitimate charities at CharityNavigator.org, MinistryWatch.com and with the National Christian Foundation at NCFGiving.com.“Ghost tax preparers - If that sounds scary, it should. This is when a scammer claims to be a legitimate tax professional. They usually make extravagant claims about how they can get you a big refund, and people fall for it. They may file a fraudulent return and have the refund check go to them instead of the taxpayer or they'll just charge a big fee up front. Either way, they disappear, and the taxpayer is left with a mess. To spot a ghost tax preparer. First, they won't sign the return or include a Preparer Tax Identification Number. That, by the way, is against the law. They may also ask for a payment without providing a receipt. They often will also falsify income to get more tax credits or claim phony deductions to get a bigger refund. They'll also sign up to have that refund direct deposited to their bank account instead of the taxpayer's. The IRS has set up a database where you can check to see if anyone claiming to be a legitimate tax preparer is on the up and up. Again, go to IRS.gov for the “Enrolled Agent” search tool. The IRS also says you should carefully look over your return once your preparer has completed it. If you have questions, by all means ask them. And make sure you verify the routing and bank account numbers on the return to make sure any refund will go to you.IRS phone scams - These come in all varieties. For example, you may get a call about a tax bill you knew nothing about. The caller claims to be an IRS agent and warns that you'll be arrested, or your Social Security benefits will be suspended if you don't pay immediately. These scam artists can even change their Caller ID to say IRS, and they may even have all or just the last 4 digits of your Social Security number all to make the scam look legitimate. Don't be fooled. The IRS will never contact you by phone. If you get a call like that, just hang up.Next, Rob answers these questions at 800-525-7000 or via email at askrob@FaithFi.com:Is a $300,000 whole life insurance policy you purchased two years ago at age 43 a good investment if you pay a $150 monthly premium and the insurance company says it should have a cash value of $70,000 when you are age 62, and would Term Life be a better option? How many years do you need to keep tax returns and supporting documents? How should you invest $50,000 you inherited if you are age 67 and don't want to lose the principal? Crooks exploit these vulnerabilities but make no mistake: All of us — young and old — are susceptible to the bad actors who show up uninvited in calls, emails, mail, texts and social media accounts. Some are so bold as to knock on our front doors. Everyone wants to protect their loved ones, and Cameron Huddleston offers the perfect solution—a journey into This Is Getting Old: Moving Towards An Age-Friendly World. So tune in now for all those practical tips you need as I talk with my guest, Cameron Huddleston. Key points covered in this episode: ✔️ How To Recognize A Scam? Scams tend to have certain red flags, and whatever the story might be, they usually come back to a one thing— an urgent request for money. Use the Scam RED Flags to learn more about the telltale signs of scams. ✔️ What Are the Most Common Forms of Payment Requested Gift Cards Peer-to-Peer payments (eg. Venmo, Zelle, PayPal, etc.) ✔️ What Are the Different Types of Scams In 2021, scammers stole over $6 billion from Americans—this is happening all the time. If you're over the age of 80, the number one way they will get in touch with you is through your landline. The second contact method is through social media, and if you're between 60 and 69, it's highly likely that you're going to be contacted through social media. Any time somebody asks you for money—that's a red flag. Common types of scams among older adults are: Government Imposter Scams Identity Theft Business Impersonation & Shopping Scams Robocalls/ Unsolicited Calls Health Care & Health Insurance Scams Sweepstake & Lottery Scams Tech Support & Computer Scams Romance Scams Financial Services Impersonation & Fraud Grandparents Scams/ Person-in-Need ✔️ How to Protect Yourself From Scams? Don't trust people who were not involved in your life and now are suddenly there. Now that you are older and perhaps need care, make sure you've already named that financial power of attorney to ensure your bank and other financial institutions know who that person is. Also, it would be best to observe the following; Don't answer a call from an unknown number; if you do, hang up immediately. Be aware that your Caller ID showing up as a local number doesn't necessarily mean it's a local caller. Do not respond to any questions asked by a stranger on a call If you answer the phone and the automatic message wants you to press a button to stop getting the calls, just hang up. Scammers often use this to identify potential targets. Do not respond to any requests via social media ✔️ Helpful Resources The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has resources for protecting older adults against fraud and a guide called Money Smart for Older Adults Help your senior loved one get on the national “Do Not Call” registry Reporting fraud against you or anyone you know that has been a victim of fraud by calling the US Senate Special Committee on Aging's Fraud Hotline Monday-Friday 9am to 5pm EST at 1-855-303-9470; or email them at https://www.aging.senate.gov/fraud-hotline Learn more by accessing the 2021 Top Scams Report If you have questions, comments, or need help, please feel free to drop a one-minute audio or video clip and email it to me at melissabphd@gmail.com, and I will get back to you by recording an answer to your question. Craig Peterson Insider Show NotesDecember 5 to December 11, 2022 China… Apple Makes Plans to Move Production Out of China https://www.wsj.com/articles/apple-china-factory-protests-foxconn-manufacturing-production-supply-chain-11670023099 In recent weeks, Apple Inc. has accelerated plans to shift some of its production outside China, long the dominant country in the supply chain that built the world's most valuable company, say people involved in the discussions. It is telling suppliers to plan more actively for assembling Apple products elsewhere in Asia, particularly India and Vietnam, they say and looking to reduce dependence on Taiwanese assemblers led by Foxconn Technology Group. After a year of events that weakened China's status as a stable manufacturing center, the upheaval means Apple no longer feels comfortable having so much of its business tied up in one place, according to analysts and people in the Apple supply chain. Cybercrime… Spyware posing as VPN apps https://www.welivesecurity.com/videos/spyware-posing-vpn-apps-week-security-tony-anscombe/ Bahamut APT group targets Android users via trojanized versions of two legitimate VPN apps – SoftVPN and OpenVPN. Since January 2022, Bahamut has distributed at least eight malicious apps to pilfer sensitive user data and actively spy on victims' messaging apps. These apps were never available for download from Google Play; instead, they were distributed through a fake SecureVPN website. ++++++++ Darknet markets generate millions in revenue by selling stolen personal data https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2022/12/darknet-markets-generate-millions-in-revenue-selling-stolen-personal-data/ Stolen data products flow through a supply chain consisting of producers, wholesalers, and consumers. The stolen data supply chain begins with producers—hackers who exploit vulnerable systems and steal sensitive information such as credit card numbers, bank account information, and Social Security numbers. Next, the stolen data is advertised by wholesalers and distributors who sell the data. Finally, the data is purchased by consumers who use it to commit various forms of fraud, including fraudulent credit card transactions, identity theft, and phishing attacks. ++++++++ Voice-scamming site “iSpoof” seized, 100s arrested in a massive crackdown https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2022/11/25/voice-scamming-site-ispoof-seized-100s-arrested-in-massive-crackdown/ Whether you call it Caller ID or CLI, it's no more use in identifying the caller's actual phone number than the “From:” header in an email is in identifying the sender of an email. As a cybersecurity measure to help you identify callers you do trust, [Caller-ID] has an extreme false negative problem, meaning that if a call pops up from Dad, or Auntie Gladys, or perhaps more significantly, from Your Bank… …then there's a significant risk that it's a scam call that's deliberately been manipulated to get past your “do I know the caller?” test. ++++++++ U.S. Govt. Apps Bundled Russian Code With Ties to Mobile Malware Developer https://krebsonsecurity.com/2022/11/u-s-govt-apps-bundled-russian-code-with-ties-to-mobile-malware-developer/ A recent scoop by Reuters revealed that mobile apps for the U.S. Army and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were integrating software that sends visitor data to a Russian company called Pushwoosh, which claims to be based in the United States. But that story omitted a crucial historical detail about Pushwoosh: In 2013, one of its developers admitted to authoring the Pincer Trojan, malware designed to intercept and forward text messages from Android mobile devices surreptitiously. Reuters also learned that the company's address in California does not exist and that two LinkedIn accounts for Pushwoosh employees in Washington, D.C. were fake. Android… Samsung's Android app-signing key has leaked and is being used to sign malware https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/12/samsungs-android-app-signing-key-has-leaked-is-being-used-to-sign-malware/ A developer's cryptographic signing key is one of the major linchpins of Android security. Any time Android updates an app, the old app's signing key on your phone must match the key of the update you're installing. If a developer's signing key leaked, anyone could distribute malicious app updates, and Android would happily install them, thinking they are legit. On Android, the app-updating process isn't just for apps downloaded from an app store; you can also update bundled-in system apps made by Google, your device manufacturer, and any other bundled apps. ZeroTrust… Cloud security starts with zero trust https://www.helpnetsecurity.com/2022/11/28/cloud-zero-trust/ Most organizations have outdated security systems that are generally based on-premises. These outdated systems often add an extra layer of complexity to shifting to the cloud, but this complexity does not mean organizations should hold off on this shift.
Episode 90 kicks off with a pair of tragic tales that are intertwined. The quiet peninsula of Cape Cod was rocked by a pair of terrible murder-suicides involving young women being cut down by jealous men. However this is not a tale from the present day, this goes all the way back to the 1890s. In the span of less than a year, both Lizzie Coleman and Sadie Hassard were gunned down. The unfortunate part is that both deaths could have been avoided. There is also another grizzly claim to fame this town has as well.Long before the days of smartphones, there were landline telephones. Long before Google and Caller ID there were the yellow pages and having to actually answer the phone to know who it was. A side effect of those days was the practice of making prank phone calls. Mostly immature and innocent they gave entertainment to some 80s and 90s kids. The height of the prank phone call came with the creation of The Jerky Boys. Several albums of prank calls and even a movie saw this comedy duo make it big in the 1990s. Phone companies sometimes block calls connected to suspicious calling patterns proactively for their customers. Many phone companies also enable their customers to block additional unwanted calls by enrolling in a service or installing an app. Consumers can also adjust certain settings on their phones, sign up with a third-party service, or download a third-party app to block suspected unwanted calls. A number of companies also offer call labeling to help consumers determine which calls they want to answer. Labeling services display categories for potentially unwanted or illegal calls such as "spam" or "scam likely" on the caller ID display. here is one of those links https://www.freecallerregistry.com/fcr/#
