It was great to have this conversation with Shaun Reany, a performance poet, advocate for mindful living and founder of the Sober Af Poetry Night. He opened up about his journey through sobriety, creativity, and self-acceptance. He has used his experiences with mental health struggles and personal growth as a foundation for creating safe, non-judgmental spaces for self-expression. His story reflects the power of poetry and public speaking to help navigate complex emotions and foster a supportive community. From Self-Investigation to SobrietyShaun's journey toward sobriety started with a deep introspection after an incident that shocked him, and nearly got him into big trouble.  He wanted to reconcile his true self with his actions. Therapy played a crucial role, allowing him to unpack years of cognitive dissonance—feeling disconnected from his values while under the influence of alcohol. After a long process, Shaun found clarity: to achieve the life he truly desired, he had to let go of alcohol. This decision marked the final piece of his puzzle, setting him on a path of self-discovery and acceptance.Creativity Unleashed: Poetry as a Healing ToolThrough writing and performing, Shaun found an outlet for expressing the emotions he previously struggled to confront. His poetry, initially inspired by song lyrics and personal reflections, became a therapeutic vehicle for self-understanding. Contrary to the myth that creativity thrives on substances, Shaun's sober reflections have brought newfound depth and honesty to his work, proving that authenticity can drive powerful artistic expression.Building a Judgment-Free CommunityIn January, Shaun launched *Sober AF Poetry Club*, an open mic event that offers a judgment-free environment for people to share their stories. Here, individuals from all walks of life present works that range from lighthearted humor to profound self-reflection, often touching on personal experiences with mental health, family dynamics, and sobriety. The club's inclusive nature fosters a community where vulnerability is met with support, offering attendees a rare chance to connect over shared challenges.Looking Ahead: The Unscripted JourneyShaun's future remains open, driven by a commitment to personal growth and creative exploration. While he acknowledges the value of planning, he emphasises staying true to what feels right, allowing each step to shape his path organically. For Shaun, the journey is about doing what brings him joy, from writing to creating safe spaces for others to express themselves authentically. As Shaun continues to explore his creative potential, his story reminds us that embracing change and supporting one another can lead to unexpected and meaningful transformations.Find the Sober Af Poetry Club on Instagram and dates for next events here.Find Club Soda:The Club Soda Tasting Room is at 39 Drury Lane, London, WC2B 5RRFind us on Instagram

Today Toby himself is a truly extraordinary contemporary creative talent. A distinguished performance poet by profession, with a love of music on the side - an articulate and passionately vocal wordsmith whose distinctive voice expresses the brilliant words that his complicated brain has put together in unique new sequences and surprising new rhymes and rhythms.Even traditionally written poetry benefits from being lifted from the black type on the white page and read aloud by someone, who understands what the poet originally had in mind. That's true whether you're talking about the plays of William Shakespeare or the popular poetry of Roger McGough. With Toby Thompson, he rehearses his own original poems repeatedly in his head, until he's happy with them, then remembers them and only when satisfied, will he express them directly and distinctively to a live audience in a theatre - or alternatively record them on a video for posterity. In his primary school, the teachers called young Toby ‘the observer'. To this day he finds inspiration in strange places, everywhere, in conversations, in audio recordings, in football commentaries, as well as in contemplating impermanence and vastness. Last November I had the absolute pleasure and privilege to interview my dear friend and vocal powerhouse, Carol Grimes. In this interview we explore her decades spanning career paying particular attention to her broad range of singing styles and genres. The following, which I took from the Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club website in London, gives you a bit more of an inkling of her stature as a singer and the deep respect she commands as a vocalist, especially in the UK music scene.  Enjoy! Carol Grimes is one of the finest singers in British music. Her deeply personal project, 'The Singer's Tale', is an autobiographical show combining theatre, music and a grooving band!  The show weaves its stories, sometimes shady, mad and bad, but with music and song at their heart. Street Busker to Ronnie Scotts, from Notting Hill to Nashville and Memphis to San Francisco from Hackney to Texas and Eastern Europe but always returning to London. This raw, in your face, sublime performer takes you with her on a musical journey through her extraordinary life.   CAROL GRIMES A much-loved performer infusing folk, blues and jazz, came to the notice of the public when she joined the band Delivery in 1969 and recorded one album before departing for a solo career. Her debut solo album, Warm Blood (1974), was recorded with members of Area Code 615 and the Average White Band. She recorded her second album in Memphis, Tennessee, with the Brecker Brothers, Donald "Duck" Dunn, and The Memphis Horns. She founded the band Eyes Wide Open in 1984. Her career expanded into teaching and working in musical theatre. In the 1990s, she worked with the choir The Shout. As you can see below, in Carol's own words, she has been, and continues to be so much more:   “My name is Carol Grimes. I have been singing for my supper since the late 1960s. I began as a young, nervous Busker and fell in love with singing. Over time I became a Singer-Songwriter, Performance Poet, Voice Movement Therapist and Musical Director, founding the Sing for Joy Choirs in London, for people with neurological and other conditions and directed them for many years. I have recorded in the UK, USA, Sweden, The Isle of Jura and Poland. I became angry, seeing injustice, poverty and cruelty all around me and became an activist. The first Musician to step up for Rock against Racism, Sexism, Reclaim the night, singing for the striking Miners, the fire service, the Brunswick Women and refugee centres. In my life, I performed both in the UK and Internationally with my own Music with wonderful musicians and for Contemporary composers such as Orlando Gough, who directed The Shout, a contemporary opera, theatre company touring internationally with them for 12 years. From Japan to South Africa Canada and the USA and beyond, including performing at the Albert Hall in the Proms as a soloist - Blimey! I had my first book ‘The Singers Tale,' published in 2018 and many songs and poems published, recorded and performed over the years. I love writing as much as I love music. James Navé here welcoming spoken word poet Gayle Danley ( www.gayledanleypoet.com )to the Twice 5 Miles Microphone and to this show titled Stay Committed to Your Life Long Poetic Vibe. What does staying committed to your lifelong poetic vibe mean? Well, it means that once you take up poetry, you keep it up for your entire life. Indeed, I've heard more than one tale of a poet on the deathbed attempting to write the last poem. Indeed, Gayle Danley is one of those poets who plans to die while writing poetry. How do I know this? Well, Gayle states that she plans to live beyond 90. So, why would one assume anything other than Gayle's last words will be, "hand me a pen and a piece of paper. She might even say while she's writing, "stay committed to your lifelong poetic vibe," For now, Gayle has miles to go before that day comes. Gail is one of the pioneers of the spoken word poetry movement in America, permeating all aspects of our culture. If you have doubts, consider Amanda Gorman, who spoke at Joe Biden's inaugural ceremony. I don't know Ms. Gorman, but I'll bet if you had a chance to ask her what influences allowed you to become such a mighty woman of the word? How could she not credit the legendary poets who came before her, like Gayle Danley? You may be interested to know that Gayle's range includes an educational component she developed over the years, providing live in-person Poetry classes and a robust online presence. In this conversation, Gail and I talk about the early days in the Poetry Slam, how much fun we have writing poetry, and talk about how it's done, and we talk about the entrepreneurial aspects of trying to make a living as s poet. Enjoy the show.

I wrote this poem last July, shortly after the first lockdown began to open up. The acting college where I had been teaching voice part time prior to lockdown invited me to come back into the studio to teach, and I didn't consider it safe—for myself, or for the students—so I declined.  It occurred to me that I would almost certainly never be offered such  work again.  I had been extremely lucky to have kept on teaching at the tertiary level for as long as I had, well into my 70s.Thoughts on ageing weren't new to me. But this seemed more pressing, especially with all the understanding by that stage that anyone over 80 was especially vulnerable to Covid-19. When 80 is only 4 years away, and those years are accelerating  by faster than  a Formula 1 car driven by Jensen Button, it feels like tomorrow.Hence this poem. It was published in October 2020 as part of the collection "Sunsets & Kites", which is available from Amazon online.Enjoy!  And stay safe.Image courtesy @gsultangeorgeSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/amIoldyet)

Dr. Yaba Blay is the Dan Blue Endowed Chair in Political Science at North Carolina Central University. An ethnographer, scholar, and content creator, her scholarship centers on global Black identities and the politics of embodiment, with particular attention given to hair and skin color politics. In 2012, Dr. Blay partnered with CNN to produce Black in America: Who is Black in America? – a television documentary inspired by her book, (1)ne Drop: Shifting the Lens on Race. In it, she explores the interconnected nuances of skin color politics and Black racial identity, and challenges narrow perceptions of Blackness as both an identity and a lived reality. Named to The Root 100 (2014), an annual list of top Black influencers, she is one of today's leading voices on colorism and global skin color politics and, to date, her commentary has been featured across some of today's leading media outlets including: CNN, BET, MSNBC, NPR, The New York Times, Ebony Magazine, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Root, Huffington Post Live, Colorlines, Al Jazeera America. Applauded by O, The Oprah Magazine for her social media activism, Dr. Blay is the creator and producer of a number of online campaigns including #PrettyPeriod - a visual celebration of dark-skinned Black beauty - and #ProfessionalBlackGirl - a webseries and multi-platform digital community dedicated to celebrating Black Girl culture. Professional Black Girl is a multi-platform digital community that celebrates the everyday magic of Black women and girls! By announcing ourselves “Professional Black Girls,” we assert an unapologetic identity in a world that too often tries to tell us how we “ought to” act. We know that “acting” like anything other than ourselves robs us of our freedom, so instead, we choose, embrace, and celebrate who we are. We are professional code-switchers. She is an educator and thought leader who has enlightened and inspired organizations, audiences and individuals from board rooms to prisons, universities to homeless shelters, elementary schools to some of the biggest stages in the world. Tarana Burke 's passion for community organizing began in the late 1980s, when she joined a youth development organization called 21st Century and led campaigns around issues like racial discrimination, housing inequality and economic justice. Her career took a turn toward supporting survivors of sexual violence upon moving to Selma, Alabama, to work for 21st Century. She encountered dozens of black girls who were sharing stories of sexual violence and abuse, stories she identified with very well. She realized too many girls were suffering through abuse without access to resources, safe spaces and support, so in 2007 she created Justbe Inc., an organization committed to the empowerment and wellness of black girls. The impacts of Justbe Inc. are widespread, as the program, which was adopted by every public school in Selma, has hundreds of alumni who have gone on to thrive and succeed in various ways. Burke's role as the senior director at Girls for Gender Equity in Brooklyn, NY, an intergenerational nonprofit dedicated to strengthening local communities by creating opportunities for young women and girls to live self-determined lives, is a continuation of what she considers her life's work. Since #MeToo, the movement she created more than ten years ago, became a viral hashtag, she has emerged as a global leader in the evolving conversation around sexual violence and the need for survivor-centered solutions. Her theory of using empathy to empower survivors is changing the way the nation and the world think about and engage with survivors. Her belief that healing isn't a destination but a journey has touched and inspired millions of survivors who previously lived with the pain, shame and trauma of their assaults in isolation. Believing in the power of art as a vehicle for social change, Sonya has been widely recognized for her work as a change agent and has won heaps of awards and honors, and Bustle Magazine has named her one of the 12 "Women who paved the way for body positivity“. Sonya’s work has been seen and heard on practically EVERY news outlet in America. Sonya is a fierce advocate and activist for intersectional global justice. Listen in as Sonya Renee tells us: – What sort of messages she heard about women’s bodies when she grew up – What the most important messages are that made her believe in her abilities and power – How she experienced privilege and oppression – Why she believes body-shame and tendencies of self-hate are learned and can be unlearned – What body-empowerment entails and why it really is about all areas of social justice, be it ableism, racism, classism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, weight-discrimination or any other form – Why weight-stigma is adding a toxic layer that affects those most that are already being discriminated against – How her great movement called "The Body Is Not An Apology" came about – Why she feels so grateful for all the contributors for showing her their perspective – Why "The Body Is Not An Apology" is for everybody – How her idea of self-love is different than the fuzzy ideas we often hear; why she calls it "radical self-love" – How her 30-day self-love challenge called RUHCUS helped her overcome her biggest shame – Why it is that some form of body shame is likely to seep back in and how we can deal with it to maintain body-peace – Why it is critical to learn about the mechanism of the diet- and beauty-industry to see just how much power we are giving away by buying into the lies we are being told every day – What would happen when women over night stopped believing those lies and stopped buying all those products – What radical self-love realistically looks like and why it has a massive impact on the world around us – Why we can never create a peaceful world unless we make peace within ourselves – What she does on those days that she finds it hard to love herself – Why it is important to see that we would only set ourselves up for failure if we want to do this journey towards body love perfectly – Why she encourages all of us to do "what WE want" and not "what we think others want us to do" – What she would change immediately were she to rule the world... ... The featured poet at the 2006 Slab City Slam was Christa Bell. To explain further, we will need the words of the poet herself: "FonkGoddess is alive and Coochie Magic is afoot through the revivalist poetry of internationally acclaimed poet, SpokenWord artist and cultural activist Christa Bell of Seattle, Washington. Her conundrum: How to make the Goddess fonky. How to make the resurrection of women’s spiritual consciousness sexy while maintaining its urgency and emphasizing its relevance to popular culture. The solution: Sanctifying women’s experience on the altar of the stage. Taking responsibility for her conceptual reality out of the hands of men through performance ritual, emphasizing the Word, that reconnects woman to her primal identity as sexual mystic, conjurer, healing artist, and divine visionary." Christa received her BA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University, has studied in France and lived in East Africa. She is currently the third ranked Performance Poet in the United States and, having lost the competition to a time penalty, after receiving the highest score in the individual event. Christa is Seattle’s 2005 Grand Slam Poetry Champion and the Northwest’s 2005 representative at the Individual World Poetry Slam Competition (IWPS). As founder of the Healing Is A Political Act (HIAPA) Creative Recovery Workshop Series, Christa is concerned with more than the technical aspects of writing and performing. She believes that expressing individual creativity is a form of power. A way to actively engage and transform our spiritual, emotional, social and political realities. Her workshops hold as their emphasis the healing of ancestral, emotional, and spiritual scars as a path to higher creativity. She is the author of three collections of poetry, Revival (2004), Arise My Beautiful One, Come With Me (2005), and YoniVerse (to be released 2006), the producer of a live Spoken Word EP entitled, WordMedicine, 2006, and is currently recording a full length live LP of her first SpokenWord tour also entitled YoniVerse: Live.
