Andy and Fish go from one rock to another as Andy covers the history of the Rathskellar, the home of Boston's rock music scene from the mid-seventies through the nineties. Intro music is from "Across the Line" by the Wellington Sea Shanty Society.
Season 3, Episode 4, AJ chats with Cha-Chi Loprete, a native of Cambridge Massachusetts. After seeing The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show as a youth, he immediately knew his career path would be in music. He started volunteering in the early 80's at WBCN on the listener line and by the end of the decade he was the station's Marketing Director. His show “Breakfast with the Beatles” has been on the air for over 40 years and has allowed him to interview the surviving members as well as many within their immediate circle. A friendship with Tony Bennett in the 90's helped solidify the crooner's amazing comeback. Cha-Chi has been on the front line of Boston radio, during it's heyday and up to it's unfortunate decline. So may I introduce to you, the act you've known for all these years ….

When it comes to the Boston Rock scene, Richie Parsons has seen and done it all. From his early days with Unnatural Axe, through stints with Future Dads, Band 19, and Tomato Monkey, and more recently a couple of stellar solo releases, Richie has delivered the rock. We cover a lot in this episode including his 30+ years working for the Newbury Comics chain, and his friendship with the late Jim Harold. And of course Richie was at the infamous Runaways show at The Rat back in the late 70's. Great talk with Boston royalty at Voice Motel... They're not exactly as wholesome as apple pie, but they have been anointed “America's Greatest Rock Band” for good reason. Aerosmith have sold more hard rock albums than any other American band, and they went from being an opening act to stadium headliners with the release of their third album, Toys In The Attic, released in 1975. The lead single from that album, “Sweet Emotion” marked important firsts: it was their first song to hit the Top 40 chart, and it was the first co-write credit that bassist Tom Hamilton got on the scoreboard. Steven Tyler's lyrics are full of daggers aimed at Joe Perry's then-girlfriend, and there is even a hidden message buried in the song. Dig in to the history of this classic tune in the new episode of the Behind The Song podcast. Watch the video episode and subscribe to the Behind The Song Youtube channel: https://bit.ly/2DBF4wJ
Season 2, Episode 4, AJ talks to Boston's Queen of Rock: Robin Lane. A vital part of Boston Rock history, Robin Lane and the Chartbusters led the charge of Boston bands in the 80's with singles on the charts and videos on MTV. Fronting that band was the first women to really make a mark on the scene, Robin Lane. Sure AJ talks about that, but also her time before that as a back-up singer with Neil Young, living in LA and meeting the infamous “Family”, married to Andy Summers, growing up around Dean Martin and that is only the first 5 minutes. When we get to her current, amazing charity work with Songbird Sings, you will realize you are truly in the company of someone really special.

Right when I first started ATB in 2016, emails asking to be a guest were few and far between. One of the first requests I ever got that year was from my next guest, who I never actually met until this past summer.Musician Justine Covault had herself just started her band Justine and The Unclean. She's someone who gets stuff done. From co-founding female-fronted rock festivalWhistleStop Rock to starting a monthly residency at The Plough And Stars with 'The Mess Around', Justine has ventured into new territory with her new label Red On Red Records. Her support and enthusiasm for the Boston music community and for her roster of (mostly) Boston bands are infectious, so much so that the great Sir David Minehan of The Neighborhoods and Woolly Mammoth Sound is collaborating with her to offer Red Mammoth Concerts.I'll let her tell the story. I just wish she had an extra swizzle stick to give me.

Juliana Hatfield! If you did not know, Juliana is a Boston native and still resides in the city. You may see her finishing up her 10…ok maybe 5k run if you can pick her out from the crowd of masked runners. She likes the anonymity and this isolation in the time of COVID fit her very well – or at least it didn’t change much for her - as she is a restless artist and will always find something to do with her creativity. With 26 or so albums under her belt, 19 of those solo studio albums, as well as her latest album 'Blood', she is a terrifically prolific songwriter and artist. If you haven’t heard her Police and Olivia Newton-John cover albums, you are in for a treat. From her previous bands Blake Babies, Some Girls, The Lemonheads, and her own band The Juliana Hatfield Three, Juliana is a constant force. Her latest album 'Blood' is, and I quote, "...a brutal and critical look at modern human psychology and behavior; at personal and societal sickness." While that sounds pretty deep and dark, Juliana says, “But it is fun, musically”. So there you have it. You should check out her live performances streaming from Q-Division Studios she has been doing once a month. My co-host this week Ike Walker and I had a nice chat with her and she is really fantastic.

What is a Jamoke? Is a chump a jamoke? We really have no idea. But we love the question and will begin using the word Jamoke on a regular basis. These are the deep questions we dove into when talking with Jennifer D’Angora and Ed Valauskas. Plymouth native Jennifer D’Angora, also known as Jenny Dee, has been on the Boston music scene long enough to be in more bands than we can count. The Dents, Jenny Dee and the Deelinquents, The Downbeat 5, and the fantastic group of musicians that make up the equally fantastic Band of Their Own which performs mainly to support Hot Stove Cool Music, the annual benefit show supporting the Foundation to be Named Later.Ed Valauskas is the studio manager of the infamous Q Division studios. Ed’s also an accomplished producer and bassist. He plays bass in The Gravel Pit, The Gentlemen, Jenny Dee & The Deelinquents, Abbie Barrett & The Last Date, The Prenups, and far too many other bands to count. Chances are if you are a regular on the live music scene in Boston, one of these two musicians and great people were on the stage. These are also only our second married couple to have on ATB. We’ll let you listen to find out the first.
Musician Barrance Whitfield has only been one thing in his life: one of the best regarded by fellow musicians, hardest working, and never giving up the love he brings to the stage. You cannot say he has just one style of singing. From a soul ballad, to a country crooner, the classic shouter and an all out rock assault - Barrance gives 100% of himself. Everyone he meets and everyone who has watched him perform are lifetime fans. I know because I am one.

We had a remote conversation with the Boston band The Devil’s Twins, who we’ve wanted to have on for a while. We do not like remote conversations, but we did find it was better than having them in person with masks on. First of all, it is obviously safer to do it remotely, and also it is much more difficult to have a face to face when you can’t even see their faces. So, we will continue to be remote until it is safe to see people in the flesh. That said we were lucky enough to have on Nicole Coogan and Jeremiah John Louf, as well as band members Ryan Manning, Eric Ortiz and Aitan Ben-Joseph. These great people also have a great clan of fans called the 2Crew, of which I am proud to be a member – some of them even getting a 2 crew tattoo to support the band, which is what I hope Ronnie will do one of these days to support me by having my name tattooed on his chest. You should know, the first rule of the 2Crew is: You do not talk about 2Crew, Except you should talk about them all the time. I will let you decide what that means, but I like it. They recorded their last album Bad Karma and have been releasing it a piece at a time, including some great videos that you can see on their website thedevilstwins.com. Last year they had a fantastic show at GBH’s Fraser room that you can see at wgbh.org. They are such a great live band and I have been encouraging them to get a graphic novel started with each of them a superhero character.

Under the gun for material to complete Rubber Soul, the Beatles dusted off an old Quarrymen-era tune, sprinkled a bit of Buck Owens on it, and gave Ringo his vocal turn with #207, "What Goes On." An earlier version was considered as a single to follow up "Please Please Me," but it found it's home as a nice bit of album filler in 1965. Featuring nice guitar and bass work, a solid vocal, and done in one take, it lands as not a bad song, not a great song, but good enough. #206, "A Taste of Honey," is the first time we get a sample of what John called Paul's "granny music $h!t." Everyone turns in a nice understated performance for a song that was sure to win over the parents of their target demographic, but is it too syrupy for its own good? And for a song with so many well known and unknown covers, how does it stack up? Joining us this week to discuss these songs is music writer Brett Milano (Boston Globe, OffBeat Magazine, Rhino Records), who entered the Fabs' orbit as lead writer and content creator for The Beatles Rock Band game. We talk about learning what a band should look, feel, and act like, take a peek behind the curtain at the creation of the Beatles Rock Band, including being in the same room as a copy of of mythical, mysterious, holy grail, "Carnival of Light." Elsewhere we touch on long lost tracks from Billie Dee Williams (the OG Lando Calrissian), finally touch on the Monkees, Jonathan and Julia shamelessly shill for beer again, and we introduce a brand new feature....BLOOPERS! We are always fascinated to talk about the state of Boston music and Boston music history with people in the business. Terrestrial radio is a huge part of that – WBCN, WFNX, WZLX - if you grew up in Boston those stations were a seminal way to discover new bands that inspired so many musicians. We met Anngelle Wood at a State of Live Music event that she hosted at iZotope offices in Cambridge when we were trying to learn a bit more about – well – the current state of live music. Whatever your thoughts on the Boston music scene, Anngelle is doing her part to share the legacy and tell the story of Boston Rock and Roll that continues to inspire musicians young and old. Anngelle began and is still passionate about radio and has worked at all the legendary Boston radio stations including WBCN, WFNX and WZLX. She is the host of Boston Emissions which began airing on WBCN back in the 80's and has been instrumental in introducing and establishing thousands of bands from Boston and New England and she also hosts and produces the great Rock and Roll Rumble that just celebrated their 40th Anniversary. We plan on publishing a retrospective on the Rumble and its history in the next month or so. But it was great to talk with Anngelle who works hard to promote and support great Boston Rock and Roll. Note: Explicit Language Song List: Song 1: Cut from Boston Emissions, broadcast March 14th, 2019 Song 2: Suburban Murders – Brix n’ Mortar (Freshcut) Song 3: Still - Corner Soul (Instant Gratification) Song 4: Falling Backwards –Set Fire (Aura) Song 5: The Theft – Circus Trees (Sakura) Song 6: Smoke Rolls – Set Fire (Aura)
The WBCN train keeps rolling on. Film maker Bill Lichtenstein talks about his new documentary "WBCN and The American Revolution" charting the beginnings of the legendary rock station all the way to the last broadcast.
Seve Morse was on the staff at the Boston Globe from 1975 all the way through 2005. He still freelances for the paper on occasion, as well as for other outlets. He created an online course for the Berklee College of Music titled “Rock History.” It’s an expert’s view of the genre, packing in observations, facts and video interviews with superstars such as Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, Aerosmith’s Joe Perry and John Lennon record producer Jack Douglas.
The Boys have their first Living guest: Musician and Spoken Word Artist Duncan Wilder Johnson.
