This episode features Henley Douglas Jr. Henley is an incredible saxophone player, band leader, and composer from Massachusetts. In addition to his musical accomplishments, Henley serves as an honorary patriarch for many players in the Boston music scene. As a young bass player, Henley gave me many opportunities to be on stage with him and his incredible band. He has recently started SOSS records. Make sure you check out his music at HDRNB.com. *CORRECTION* In the episode we referred to the first song as TNT and the final song as Amore's Prayer. The first song is actually Amore's Prayer and the final song is TNT. Do you want to stay up to date on episodes? Season 2, Episode 9, AJ talks to Charlie Farren. America's Special Guest has been a fixture in the Boston Music scene for almost 50 years. They discuss his legendary bands: Farrenheit, Balloon, The Enemy, The Joe Perry Project and his very successful solo career. From clubs to stadiums, chances are no matter in the world where you are, if there is a stage, Charlie has been on it. All thru this amazing music career, for over 22 years he also held down a full time job with Hewlett-Packard. Guitar designer, TV show music judge, song writer, producer and his most important gig as a dad are all covered. A class act and a true rock star, enjoy this conversation.
Season 2, Episode 7, AJ talks to Jerry Lehane, singer songwriter of the legendary Boston band: The Dogmatics. For over 40 years, they have been on the Boston Music scene as one of the most energetic bar bands you will ever see. They literally put Thayer Street in the South End of Boston on the map, by naming their first album that and having infamous “after parties” at their studio/loft on that street. At the height of their popularity in the 80s tragedy struck, but as true survivors, they took some time off, regrouped and to this day they are still putting out new music. The local punk scene may have come and gone and come again, but it is a true testament that thru it all The Dogmatics still shine. Hear the tale of a true rock icon and one who is proud to be a Bostonian and wears it on his sleeve like a merit badge.
Ringo Starr finally made it to Boston on Thursday, June 2, to receive his honorary degree from the Berklee College of Music. The school originally announced that The Beatles drummer would receive a doctorate in music at commencement ceremonies in May, but Starr was unable to attend then and instead addressed the graduating class in a recorded statement. But with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band in town for a show, the school held a special ceremony to honor his lifelong contributions to the music scene that featured performances of Starr's hit songs, arranged and performed by Berklee students. Starr, 81, told the story of how he picked up drumming when he was 13 and very ill and someone brought some percussion instruments to the hospital to keep him busy. He was hooked. “I just wanted to be a drummer from that moment on," he said at Thursday's ceremony. “It was my big dream and it's still unfolding. I get to play with great guys, like the band here. It's just a great life I lead." Gregg Bissonette, the drummer in the All Starr Band, and Berklee President Erica Muhl provided opening remarks. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

"Crumb" are an American indie rock band based in Brooklyn, New York. The four piece originally met in 2016 when they were attending Tufts University in Massachusetts. While continuing their studies each of the members were playing in separate bands, dabbling in Jazz, Soul and Rock before they came together to form "Crumb". The group started off by recording two EP's and embarking on a US tour before putting out their full length debut album "Jinx" in 2019. They have been described as psychedelic rock, dream pop and even trip hop, with some commentators likening them to Canadian outfit "Men I Trust" due to their often warm, groovy and jazzy tones. In this episode Jay and Jesse discuss the bands' formation, peculiar studio techniques and spin their favorite tracks from Crumb's discography. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg
Right when I first started ATB in 2016, emails asking to be a guest were few and far between. One of the first requests I ever got that year was from my next guest, who I never actually met until this past summer.Musician Justine Covault had herself just started her band Justine and The Unclean. She's someone who gets stuff done. From co-founding female-fronted rock festivalWhistleStop Rock to starting a monthly residency at The Plough And Stars with 'The Mess Around', Justine has ventured into new territory with her new label Red On Red Records. Her support and enthusiasm for the Boston music community and for her roster of (mostly) Boston bands are infectious, so much so that the great Sir David Minehan of The Neighborhoods and Woolly Mammoth Sound is collaborating with her to offer Red Mammoth Concerts.I'll let her tell the story. I just wish she had an extra swizzle stick to give me.
Linnea Herzog is someone you don't miss when you walk by her. Or see on stage. And I would surmise at her day job as a neuroscientist at The Broad Institute, you can't miss her there either.Musicians are smart. But some are smarter than others, especially when you get a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Brandeis University where Linnea studied how taste and spatial information are processed in the rodent hippocampus. Linnea is actually our second musician/scientist we've spoken to at The Broad Institute. A few years ago, we talked with Infectious Disease Expert, Professor at Harvard University, and musician Pardis Sabetti.Anyways, Linnea is all punk and glam and a fearless rock star. Having got to the Rock and Roll Rumble finals in 2019 with her former band Powerslut, when the pandemic hit, she decided to go in a new direction with her new band Linnea's Garden. Linnea is a do-it-yourselfer, and she certainly does it all.Her debut EP, “Nowhere Friday Nights,” is out now on Red on Red Records and she is preparing to release a full length shortly.I hoped to publish this episode before they played at The Sinclair in Cambridge, MA, but life got in the way a bit. So while I missed the opportunity to plug her Sinclair show, she already has several more lined up this fall. I was able to get a recording from the Sinclair show that you can hear at the end of this conversation, so make sure you stay for that!Linnea was a great chat and I had a fantastic time talking to her.
The backstory: Boston Emissions aired first on the legendary WBCN in Boston until 2009 when the station went dark and made the flip to sports. In August 2009, the show was moved to sister station, WZLX (where I was for a total of 15 years) until the new owners canceled the show entirely in May 2018. I took the show online exclusively that fall. This is the first show back "after the FM". Truth is, being an independent entity has been the best part. This one has been a long time coming. I've been a fan of Kristian Montgomery and The Winterkill Band for awhile now, and in this episode we get to hash things out for his newest album, “Prince of Poverty.” It's one of three recorded during the pandemic and this fall he'll release “A Heaven for Heretics." Kristian has been a part of the Boston Music Scene for some time and talks about the way he fits in (and sometimes doesn't). He talks about the challenge in getting noticed in the U.S. while at the same time he's become well known in Europe. He's also done shows over there and shares some tales about the audiences and what they're like. We also do a deep dive into his newest album, “Prince of Poverty,” released earlier this year. The album touches on a lot of different subjects—from judgement over the past to America and how he views it. After this, enjoy two songs from the new album, “American Fire” and “A Warm Grave.”

I saw my first show at Once Ballroom in Somerville a few years ago, entering the building, wondering if I just walked into a bar mitzvah, or as JJ Gonson first thought when she saw the room for the first time, a high school prom. But on the raised stage I saw the band, Dada. That was only the first time among many. Mostly I was there for the infamous Boston Emissions Rock and Roll Rumble, where the place transformed into a community of music fans and bands who supported each other and the music for which Boston is famous.JJ Gonson saw the room not as a ballroom, but as an opportunity to share her love of music with the world. That may sound a bit cheesy, but JJ is all about the music.Starting off as a rock photographer, (she is responsible for the Elliott Smith self-titled album cover as well as his Roman Candle album), she eventually began to manage Elliott's band Heatmiser and then Elliott himself before he left us all too soon.ONCE was to become a catering company but soon morphed into one of the great, unique independent venues in Boston. COVID hit hard, unfortunately, and ONCE had to close. But the community JJ worked so hard to pull together through music, well, pulled together to raise money to try and keep ONCE alive. And while the venue did eventually have to close, she was able to go virtual with the ONCE Virtual Venue to give musicians the ability to continue playing for people. It also gave JJ the opportunity to search for another location, which she found at Boynton Yards. I'll let her talk about that. But JJ continues to fight for venues, Boston music, and the musicians that make up this amazing city, through her incredible work with Save Our Stages and the National Independent Venue Association.Suffice it to say that we are all fortunate to have our friend JJ Gonson on our side.

Matt Lorenz, AKA The Suitcase Junket. Many sounds come from this one-man band. Sounds from actual suitcases, from guitars found in the trash to any number of odds and ends Matt procures, invents, and salvages. He is an inventive and talented guy.I took a trip out to western MA to chat with Matt in his recently almost finished studio to talk about, well, a whole bunch of things - his latest album The End is New, his upcoming show at the Sinclair in Cambridge MA on August 6th, his life before, during, and after COVID, and the difference between Doom Folk and Swamp Yankee Music, if there is one.I even had my friend Eric Lineback ask a few questions that were more intelligent than mine.Anyways, The End is New, produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, is Matt's sixth full-length album as The Suitcase Junket and his first for Renew Records/BMG.
As the title says, it's dual Boston artists in this episode. Kicking things off is singer-songwriter Linda Marks, who has a brand new album out called “Monuments of Love.” Inspired by and written during the pandemic, the album touches on a lot of the last year, from the health risks we were all faced with to separation anxiety to lost moments with loved ones. Linda and I talk about how she stayed creative during this difficult time, even hosting a regular livestream music series. We also look at how she completed two other albums, “The Piano” and “Songs at the Heart of Life” during COVID. Linda also has a big triple album release show planned for Aug. 1 at The Burren in Somerville. After Linda's interview, enjoy one of the tracks for the new album, “Prayers,” written for a musician friend who battled a hellish case of COVID but is now on the mend and singing once more. Following this, I'm back with Daniel Promotes, and we also find ourselves chatting about the last 15 months and what it's been like for him. Daniel's also been hard at work joining Ambitious Writerz, and it looks like there's going to be touring in the near future. We look at the Boston rap scene and how it weather the pandemic, focusing on some artists who really made their mark with new releases during this time.

Before diving into current events, we're taking time in this episode to reflect on the health crises that were impacting the US during our absence. These issues will continue to weigh on all Americans to varying degrees, and we'll always do our best to respectfully take note of the reality of our current society. Music can provide a unique vehicle for self-expression, which is a power that Felicia Angeja Viator knows all about. Her diverse experiences and extensive knowledge come together to form a multifaceted view that is insightful and useful for all. This is part one of an interview that will be featured again later in the season. Our theme music guru DYLIS also returned to deliver a new full-length track, "Wonderland". Other upcoming episodes will include commentary on the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, updates from former podcast hosts Matt Hanson & Lucas Spiro, a State of the Arts with Fuse Founder Bill Marx, and so much more!
Recording entirely in dorms across Boston, Aaron Halford is an up and coming soul/R&B musician with an updated sound. The San Francisco native is influenced by artists such as Marvin Gaye, Anderson Paak and the Beach Boys. Halford's debut release “Before It Starts” features the young artist on four instruments: vocals, guitar, keyboard and bass. With the help of his long-time collaborator and friend Matty Michna; Halford's lyrics explore love, city life, his recent past, and his inner psyche. Halford hopes that he can provide a window into modern relationships with music that will withstand the test of time. The pair cover these topics and much more in their interview, and top off the half hour with a few of their favorite hits.
