Brad Brisco and I have a fascinating conversation about the future of church planting in North America. Brad shares his personal journey from the restaurant business to seminary and church planting, and how that led him to rethink the entire approach to planting new churches. He argues that we need to shift our mindset - from seeing the church as a vendor of religious goods and services, to understanding the church as a sent missionary people. This is a crucial distinction, because it changes everything about how we approach church planting. Brad unpacks the benefits of co-vocational ministry, the importance of building diverse teams, and the need to start with missionary behaviors and activities rather than just launching a Sunday morning service. If you're someone involved in church planting, or if you're simply curious about the future of the church in our rapidly changing culture, you're going to want to lean in and listen closely to this conversation. Brad offers a compelling new vision that just might reshape the way we think about fulfilling the Great Commission in our communities. Brad Brisco is currently the Director of Multiplication Strategies for the Send Network. He holds a doctorate in the area of missional ecclesiology, his doctoral thesis was on assisting existing congregations in transitioning in a missional direction. He is the co-author of Missional Essentials, a twelve-week small group study guide, The Missional Quest: Becoming a Church of the Long Run, Next Door As It Is In Heaven, and author of ReThink and Covocational Church Planting. Church attendance in the West is on the decline. I think any church interested in having a future needs to do some serious reflecting on what may need to change. And I'm pretty convinced there's a big gap to be filled for people who still desire a faith community, but aren't looking to return what they may have left for good reasons. So...what kind of churches could fill that gap?At least one component of that conversation is about the moolah. How to resource and staff churches in a changing world. Sustaining the budget of a church with full-time staffing expenses isn't cheap. (and perhaps for some of us the business oriented nature of church is part of what we wanted to leave behind.) At the same time, coordinating and organising any kind of community does take time, effort and resources. And I still think there's an important role for pastors and ministers of all kinds.I've been trying to live in the tension of these questions for many years now. For several years I've personally been bi-vocational. Working a day or two in paid ministry and a few days in other spaces. A few years ago I read a book by Brad Brisco that introduced me to a concept I liked even more than BiVo. The book was called 'Covocational Church Planting', and in this week's podcast episode you'll hear why covocational can be a more holistic approach. I am delighted to have Brad join me on this episode for a chat about the future of the church and how CoVocational staffing may play a role in that. More broadly we discuss how the shape and structure of church is interwoven with what we believe about God and the purpose of the church. Brad has spent many years navigating these questions, and I think has some great wisdom to offer.During the conversation Brad mentions some resources around the ‘five-fold/APEST' gifts. Can we deconstruct the church and not God? Can we challenge the bride of Christ in America without questioning our faith? This is a quandary I live in. This is just one of the questions we dug into in the podcast. As we explore digital ministry and digital church, we are challenging perceived norms, and I may in the few, but I will own this statement: when done right, I believe that a digital expression of church is actually closer to the biblical model proposed. Brad Brisco is one of my favorite twitter follows. While most of Twitter has seemingly become a giant shout-fest turning grown adults into petty children, Brad utilizes the platform so well to challenge his people to his way of thinking, sure, but he does it respectfully. And as someone who works with co-vocational pastors and priesthood of all believes ideology (challenging the clergy/laity divide) Brad is one of these in the church-space who may not understand a digital ecclesiology, but through his work is giving permission to digital to reimagine it's ecclesiology. So jump on the show as Brad Brisco from the North American Mission Board unpacks Digital Ecclesiology & Deconstructing Church. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thechurchdigital/message

If we are serious about changing the culture within the church, then we must begin to change the narrative that leaders tell. If the only stories we are telling through social media are who is preaching, what you're preaching, and how amazing everything was on Sunday, then we will continue to get and BE what we continue to highlight. In this episode, Caesar is joined by author and missional strategist, Brad Brisco. They discuss how the types of stories we're commonly telling about our churches are having damaging consequences. It's time to change all that! In This Episode You'll Learn: How silly our stories about our church sound and look online. How many of our stories betray a deep sense of consumerism. Why changing the narratives we tell will reshape the Church itself. God desires a relationship of trust with you that is real and present. He is longing to draw you into His big Story and in so doing, rewrite the story of your life. And not just your afterlife, but today, tomorrow… with your family and friends, and within the Church."
