2/23/25 Whatever you believe about God is what becomes the reality in which you live in... Many times people attribute things to God that He has nothing to do with and by doing so they step in line to inherit things He never intended. This week's message is about a handful of people who had a bright idea and took a chance on the possibility that Jesus was good and by doing so they ushered in the inheritance of their loving Father directly into dire circumstances. This was a fun one, we hope you dig it!

The first night of Richard Sheridan's classic comedy ‘The Rivals' did not go according to plan. Critics thought it was too long, the Irish gentry in the audience were insulted, and an actor was pelted with rotten fruit. It closed after one performance on 17th January, 1775. But then… after eleven days of rewrites, recasting and edits (a process Sheridan called “prunings, trimmings and patchings”), the show re-opened - and became the much-loved hit it remains to this day. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly expose how Sheridan exploited his notoriety in Bath to put bums on seats; unpick how the play's famous ‘Malapropisms' achieved seminal status; and revisit the best of Sheridan's real-life one-liners… Further Reading: • ‘The scourge of Bath' (The Guardian, 2004): https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2004/may/15/theatre • The Dramatic Works of Richard Brinsley Sheridan (Cavan Library): http://www.cavanlibrary.ie/file/Local-Studies/Library-Scanned-Docs/The_dramatic_works_of_Richard_Brinsley_Sheridan.pdf • ‘What Are Malapropisms?' Join Joe McDonald as he shares a relatable story about getting distracted by a “bright idea,” as outlined in Step 12 of Alcoholics Anonymous. Joe recounts the story of a man who, after having a few words with his boss, got the idea to head out into the woods where car buyers that don't come to dealerships might be. Joe humorously asks if anyone has ever had the same experience of coming up with a bright idea to leave where they're supposed to be and head somewhere else. It's a reminder that distractions can lead us off course, but awareness helps us stay on the path of recovery. In Alcoholics Anonymous, Step 12 is about carrying the message and maintaining focus in all our affairs. In recent years, the emphasis on STEM education has undoubtedly equipped students with valuable skills for the future. But has this focus come at the expense of other critical subjects, like civics? In today's "Bright Idea" segment, we discuss the current state of civics education in the U.S. with journalist, speaker, and author Holly Korby. Korby, who wrote Building Better Citizens, shares her candid assessment of how well the nation prepares young people to understand their role in democracy, grading the U.S. a C-. Korby points to the writings of Horace Mann, who, in the 1800s, championed public education with a core mission: to produce informed citizens who grasp how government functions. Yet, as Korby highlights, we need to catch up to this fundamental goal today. While states like Massachusetts and Illinois stand out for their robust civics programs, Korby describes the overall picture as a "patchwork system" that varies widely in quality across the country. Despite the challenges, Korby offers hope, outlining actionable steps educators can take to better equip students with the knowledge they need to engage in civic life. We explore these solutions further in Episode 272 of Class Dismissed. Tune in to the Class Dismissed podcast on your favorite app or iTunes to hear Korby's insights. “Reach isn't a measure or a strategy for how we get bigger. Reach is a measure of what we're willing to care about.” “We have to wage war against regret.” “We break the patterns of the past by choosing to be faithful in the moment.” Chapters: 00:00 Introduction and Background 07:27 Reaching People and Caring for Their Needs 09:07 Walking with People and Being Helpful 17:19 The Importance of Surrender 23:17 Choosing a Word of the Year 27:58 Living a Life of Beauty and Generosity 30:37 The Power of a Single Word 32:27 Being Intentional and Generative 36:39 Disrupting Old Patterns and Finding Peace 39:43 The Process of Encounter, Formation, and Expression 50:02 Being Cool and Embracing Authenticity Episode Summary: Mike Ashcraft, senior pastor at Port City Community Church, shares his journey and insights on generous leadership. He emphasizes the importance of reaching people and caring about their needs, rather than focusing on building something big. Mike also discusses the value of walking with people and not standing on issues, as well as the significance of surrender and choosing a word of the year. He encourages individuals to focus on who they want to be and to live a life of beauty and generosity. In this conversation, Mike Ashcraft discusses the power of choosing a single word to guide and shape our lives. He emphasizes the importance of being intentional and generative in our actions and thoughts. Mike also shares insights on disrupting old patterns, finding peace in the present moment, and the process of encounter, formation, and expression. He encourages us to be cool and not let our emotions dictate our responses. Ultimately, Mike wants to be remembered as someone who was authentic and actively worked towards becoming the person he aspired to be. R.O.G. Takeaway Tips: Reaching people is about caring for their needs and extending ourselves towards them. Walking with people involves being helpful and asking how we can support them. Surrendering involves trusting God with different aspects of our lives and offering ourselves as a living sacrifice. Choosing a word of the year helps deepen our awareness and focus on who we want to be. Living a life of beauty and generosity involves offering something that isn't necessarily productive or efficient. Choose a single word to guide and shape your life. Be intentional and generative in your actions and thoughts. Disrupt old patterns and find peace in the present moment. Embrace the process of encounter, formation, and expression. Be cool and don't let emotions dictate your responses. Strive to be authentic and actively work towards becoming the person you aspire to be. Guest Bio: Mike Ashcraft serves as the senior pastor at Port City Community Church which he helped start in 1999. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Michelle Danner, Director, “Miranda's Victim” About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Michelle Danner, is a highly acclaimed, multi-award winning actress, filmmaker and world renowned acting coach. On the stage, she starred in over 30 plays and musicals including Tennessee Williams' “The Rose Tattoo”, “House of Yes”, “Bright Ideas”, “Ibsen's Ghosts”, and “One White Crow”. She's also directed many award winning stage productions including “The Night of the Black Cat”, “Mental the Musical”, “You're on the Air”, and “Jane Fonda in the Court of Public Opinion.” On the big screen, she's appeared in several movies by other directors, including “Reach” and “Ovation”, as well as in many of her own movies, including “How to Go Out on a Date in Queens”, “Hello Herman”, “The Bandit Hound”, “Bad Impluse”, and “The Runner”. Her movies have won a staggering 56 awards at some of the most prestigious film festivals in the world. She's here to discuss her latest film, entitled “Miranda's Victim”, which in my opinion, is an absolute masterpiece. The movie tells the true story of the origins of the “Miranda warning”, which the police must give to every criminal suspect and accused person, that they have the right to remain silent, and that anything they say can be used against them in a court of law. Until our guest made this movie, most people had no idea about the circumstances behind the landmark 1966 US Supreme Court ruling in the Miranda case – circumstances involving the horrific kidnapping and rape by Mr. Miranda, of Patricia Weir in Phoenix, Arizona in 1963. This riveting movie, starring Abigail Breslin, Andy Garcia, Donald Sutherland, Luke Wilson, Ryan Phillippe and Kyle MacLachlan, tells the jaw dropping story of the many astonishing twists and turns throughout the groundbreaking court case, from the perspective of Ms. Weir, the victim. The movie, which is available for streaming on Hulu, has won 15 film festival awards, and has been universally praised not only by film critics, but also by leading members of the legal profession and justice system. In addition to being a highly acclaimed stage director and filmmaker, our guest is also a renowned acting coach. She's given acting workshops around the world and she's worked with many A-list actors including Donald Sutherland, Henry Cavill, Gerard Butler, Penelope Cruz, Andy Garcia, Salma Hayek and many others. She teaches classes at the Michelle Danner Studio and the Los Angeles Acting Conservatory. She's also the Founding Director of the Creative Center for the Arts, where she has served as Artistic Director for more than 20 years. Cyndi Thomason is the Founder and President of bookskeep, a financial management tool for e-commerce offering bookkeeping, invoicing, and expense-tracking features. As a master-level certified Profit First professional and certified Fix This Next coach, Cyndi works with e-commerce clients to help them achieve long-term profitability in their business. As an industry thought leader, she devotes much of her time speaking at various events, webinars, and podcasts, including ASD Market Week, SellerCon, Prosper, eCommerceFuel Live, Freedom Ticket, and Bright Ideas. In January 2019, Cyndi released Profit First for Ecommerce Sellers, a best-selling guide that focuses on four critical areas: managing inventory, relying on debt, understanding financial data, and maintaining focus. In this episode… Profit First is a financial management system created by author Mike Michalowicz. The fundamental idea is to prioritize allocation over traditional accounting. The system emphasizes the importance of setting aside profit to drive long-term business success and encourages a disciplined approach to success. How can e-commerce sellers implement the Profit First methodology to maintain profitability while scaling? Profit First professional Cyndi Thomason advocates three practices to accelerate scaling: optimizing inventory management, leveraging manufacturing partnerships, and strategically managing expenses. To enhance your inventory management, order less to ensure a rapid ROI. Cyndi notes that many e-commerce sellers should learn to negotiate with their manufacturers. Beyond building a relationship, practice the art of negotiation — it could secure you 0% financing. This is one of the quickest methods to scale your business. Lastly, focus on the three main drivers of expenses: inventory, Amazon FBA fees, and advertising spend — including assessing your COGS. In this episode of the eComm Breakthrough Podcast, Josh Hadley interviews Cyndi Thomason, Founder and President of bookskeep, about profitability drivers to help your business scale. Cyndi shares her inspiration for writing Profit First for Ecommerce Sellers, lists common bookkeeping hurdles e-commerces sellers face, and explains how to implement the Profit First methodology.
