Super excited to announce new guest, Eric Wirsing, to The Story!Eric began his musical journey with piano at the age of five. Shortly after beginning piano, he also studied violin and drums. But at the age of 12 when Eric received his first electric guitar, he realized his true passion and path in his musical life and has not put it down since. In the 30+ years since striking those first notes, he has been deeply involved in music.Eric's obsession for the guitar led him to Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA in 1999. Development of the modern income tax. Congress re-adopted the income tax in 1913, levying a 1% tax on net personal incomes above $3,000, with a 6% surtax on incomes above $500,000. By 1918, the top rate of the income tax was increased to 77% (on income over $1,000,000) to finance World War I. The top marginal tax rate was reduced to 58% in 1922, to 25% in 1925, and finally to 24% in 1929. In 1932 the top marginal tax rate was increased to 63% during the Great Depression and steadily increased. During World War II, Congress introduced payroll withholding and quarterly tax payments. In pursuit of equality (rather than revenue) President Franklin D Roosevelt proposed a 100% tax on all incomes over $25,000. When Congress did not enact that proposal, Roosevelt issued an executive order attempting to achieve a similar result through a salary cap on certain salaries in connection with contracts between the private sector and the federal government. For tax years 1944 through 1951, the highest marginal tax rate for individuals was 91%, increasing to 92% for 1952 and 1953, and reverting to 91% 1954 through 1963. For the 1964 tax year, the top marginal tax rate for individuals was lowered to 77%, and then to 70% for tax years 1965 through 1981. In 1978 income brackets were adjusted for inflation, so fewer people were taxed at high rates. The top marginal tax rate was lowered to 50% for tax years 1982 through 1986. Reagan undid 40% of his 1981 tax cut, in 1983 he hiked gas and payroll taxes, and in 1984 he raised tax revenue by closing loopholes for businesses. According to historian and domestic policy adviser Bruce Bartlett, Reagan's 12 tax increases over the course of his presidency took back half of the 1981 tax cut. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/law-school/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/law-school/support
THIS ONE IS IMPORTANT!!!Three things I learned talking to today's guest and democratic candidate for State Attorney in the Sixth Judicial Circuit for Pinellas/Pasco, Allison Miller.1. According to Florida Department of Corrections, Pinellas/Pasco counties (the 6th circuit) send more people to prison than any other circuit in Florida. 2. A Democrat hasn't run for State Attorney in Pinellas/Pasco since 1964.3. Allison's opponent and current State Attorney for Pinellas/Pasco, Bruce Bartlett, was recently quoted as saying "One of the things that has made this office so effective is the lack of change".Now how you feel about these facts may inform how you vote. I used to work for Bruce Bartlett, I like Bruce Bartlett and I'm hoping he'll come on the show to discuss his view. That said, my politics are no secret, we have never had a female state attorney and I am a big fan of change. A lot of my colleagues are nervous to speak publicly about this race for fear of how it may impact their practice. I'm not that smart. I'm not gonna tell anyone how to vote, but I'm going to ask that you listen to this podcast and hopefully Bruce's if he agrees to do it.This one is important folks...expect a quizWww.millerforstateattorney.com

Produced by KSQD 90.7FM “Like someone dying of thirst in the desert, conservatives drank heavily from the Fox waters.” - Bruce Bartlett, 2015 There is a difference between news and propaganda. We have hauntingly witnessed the rot in American politics with the angry insurrection on democracy's Capital. Fox News has played an intentional role in creating mass anger in America because, simply, it sells. It is Fox News' product. As a veteran Fox News producer said, “Ratings are the only thing that matter.” Trump torched the anger, but Fox News sprayed it with gasoline first. Arthur West is returning to “Be Bold America!” to discuss Fox News' role in the attack by an angry mob on our Capital and to also give us an update on WASHLITE's lawsuit against Fox News. Interview Guests: Arthur West is chair of the non-profit, The Washington League for Increased Transparency and Ethics (WASHLITE). WASHLITE claims that Fox News and other defendants “willfully and maliciously engaged in a campaign of deception and omission regarding the danger of the international proliferation of the novel Coronavirus. For the last 25 years Mr. West has lived in Olympia Washington, and has litigated numerous cases against large organizations, including Intel, Weyerhaeuser, the Ports of Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia, and the State Associations of Counties and Cities. From 2011-2012 West collaborated with Fairfax County on a successful NEPA campaign to challenge and force amendments to the Bush Administration's 2 Billion Dollar Hot Lanes Project. He has over a dozen published opinions in open government and environmental law. Ryan Sarnataro studied Psychology and Economics from Syracuse University and attended Jungian grad school in Berkeley. He possesses a deep interest in in the psychology of why disinformation is so successful.
In this interview, keyboardist and composer, Steve Hunt talks about his upcoming release entitled CONNECTIONS. This new album features an allstar lineup of musicians, including Jimmy Haslip, Chad Wackerman, Gary Husband, Vinnie Colauita, Virgil Donati, Nate Wood, Evan Marien, Jimmy Johnson, Eric Marienthal, Billy Cobham, and many others. We also talked about his work with Allan Holdsworth, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, and others. Pianist Steve Hunt, throughout his career, has stayed true to an uncompromising vision of composing and performing jazz music from his heart. Steve has continued to push himself technically, focusing on a musical style which is both challenging and meaningful... Steve credits jazz greats Keith Jarrett, Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Thelonius Monk as strong influences to his jazz style. During his formative years he studied with concert pianist Albert Hirsh, and jazz pianists Sid Davis and Lyle Mays who all helped form his lighting fast technique and unique style. Steve later attended Berklee College of Music in Boston where he continued his study of jazz. After recording and performing with top Boston jazz musicians such as Randy Roos and Tiger Okoshi, and leading his own jazz fusion band, Steve spent the next ten years on the road with several renowned jazz artists such as Billy Cobham, Stanley Clarke, Angela Bofill, Tom Brown, and Allan Holdsworth. Steve's international touring took him to countries such as Japan, Israel, Austria, France, England, Italy, Sweden, Argentina, and Australia, as well as major cities in the US and Canada. During this time, Steve also served as musical director for the famous touring Jazz Explosion where he led the trio which headlined artists Freddy Hubbard, Gato Barbaira, Stanley Turentine, Ramsey Lewis, violinist Noel Pointer, Kenny G, and the late Phillis Hyman. The Jazz Explosion performed in major concert venues including the Circle Star in San Francisco, Beacon Theater in New York, Universal Theater in Los Angeles, and Hammersmith Odium in London. Steve's desire towards challenging himself is no where more evident than with his long time association with Allan Holdsworth, whose progressive and innovative style has helped Steve to further his own musical development. Holdsworths more recent CD releases including Secrets, Wardencliff Tower, and Hard Hat Area, as well as featuring Steve on keyboards, also include Steves original tunes "Maid Marion," "Joshua," and "Dodgy Boat." While touring with Holdsworth, Steve was featured in the Japanese edition of Keyboard Magazine (July 1991 and March 1993). Other noteworthy recording contributions by Steve include two of Stanley Clarkes CD releases If This Bass Could Only Talk and East River Drive. Steve reached a major milestone, producing his solo jazz CD From Your Heart and Your Soul (BMI). For the promotional release tour of his new CD, Steve organized a quintet including Gregg Bendian, John Lockwood, Ole Mathisen, and Bruce Bartlett.

There’s been a lot of commentary about how Donald Trump is changing the Republican Party. There’s even a cottage industry of former Republicans who often write about how Trump has ruined the GOP they once knew and loved. But according to Bruce Bartlett, a former senior White House economic adviser to President Bush 41, most of what today’s Trump skeptics point to as something new in the party was there long ago. Bartlett had a falling out with the GOP in the early 2000s when he realized that its leaders were not interested in the fiscal conservatism that they promised on the campaign trail. That took him on a long road, one which led to him becoming a progressive. In this episode, Theory of Change host Matthew Sheffield talks with Bartlett about his ideological journey and also his thoughts on today’s political situation. According to the former libertarian economist, Democrats don’t take politics seriously enough to invest in the political infrastructure that conservatives spent decades building up. The net effect is that American politics continues drifting rightward, even though most Americans do not actually support cutting the government.
NSFW! You probably know Bruce Bartlett from his scathingly anti-Trump tweets and Facebook statuses, but you might not know that Bruce was a top adviser in the Reagan and Bush 41 administrations. He served as the executive director of the Joint Economic Committee, and later Bruce served as a senior policy analyst in the White House’s office of policy development. We went on to work at the Treasury Department as the deputy assistant secretary for economic policy, and he’s the author of Impostor: How George W. Bush Bankrupted America and Betrayed the Reagan Legacy. If you like what you hear, please consider supporting this show at bobcescashow.com.

Since forever, Republicans have insisted that cutting taxes on wealthy corporations and individuals would grow the economy, create jobs, and lift wages. But it never does. As an early architect of what became “Reaganomics,” Bruce Bartlett was there at the birth of this GOP tax myth. He joins the podcast to help set the record straight. Today we discuss the X-Factor and all contestant shows and their common factor, the Irish national budget announcement of this year and the current state of affairs and it's crumbling health service. We give our brief and skewed couch-economist view of the budget. Mentioned is the fact that it’s now research-paper-proven the ultra-high earning pay ultra-low tax (which is nothing new of course, but it is officially been presented). Trickle-Down or Supply-Side economics is bullshit (Bruce Bartlett, did not have the name on hand at the time), Climate change is now a really hot topic (pun intended) and we have much less time than we thought before we all die. Second Hurricane in Ireland expected (Due to climate change). The VW diesel scandal and the unexpected trend towards profit despite actual fraud and its’ real impact. Some hilarious note for our German listeners also at the end.If you have any comments of ideas or suggestions, contact us as per below. February is Black History Month, so it’s an appropriate time to take a critical look at the way government has treated racial minorities, especially African Americans. Is government more likely to be the friend or adversary of minority groups? Has it been liberals, conservatives, or libertarians like William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass who have been the most consistent defenders of everyone's rights? What does history suggest would be the best public policy for racial minorities in the 21st century? Bruce Bartlett, a former Reagan administration economist with a provocative new book, and Casey Lartigue, coeditor of Educational Freedom in Urban America and a controversial former XM 169 talk show host, will discuss these questions. Bruce Bartlett, a veteran of the Reagan White House and Treasury Department, argues that George W. Bush has betrayed the Reagan legacy by expanding the size and scope of the federal government and letting the federal budget mushroom out of control. He charges that the Medicare expansion of 2003 may be "the worst legislation in history" and raises the question of whether Bill Clinton was a better fiscal conservative than Bush. Bartlett writes as a fiscally conservative Republican and worries that his party will have little future if it loses the trust of voters who want small government and fiscal responsibility. Blogger extraordinaire Andrew Sullivan will comment on Bartlett's critique and the state of American conservatism. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
