A career professional at Levi Strauss & Company, Eileen Lee learned about dyeing, weaving, and sewing on an international scale: giant factories full of loud looms weaving 2/2 twill, pattern pieces cut out of four-foot-high stacks of cloth, and no possibility of adding a tuck here or a dart there without retooling. During her years in the industry, Eileen saw major shifts in the market for the company's signature product, as their target customer began to look elsewhere and their manufacturing shifted overseas. A century ago, Eileen's grandmother saw a tradition on the cusp of changing, even disappearing. Hawaiian quilting grew from the basic stitches taught by Christian missionaries into a distinct cultural tradition, with large appliqué motifs and echo quilting lines. But the quilters who made these quilts didn't share them outside their families; some quilts were burned to keep their designs a secret. Hannah Ku´umililani Cummings Baker threw open her cache of quilt designs and taught the skill to anyone who cared to learn, creating both a wider market and a fresh generation of quilters. One of her students was her granddaughter Eileen, who wrote about her grandmother in PieceWork Summer 2021. From her grandmother's tutelage to a career in mass-market textiles to her current studio and teaching practice, Eileen Lee's story is woven and stitched together. There's a long history of states solving major social challenges through ambitious and mission-driven public policy, such as getting a person on the moon, or the foundation of the UK's national health service. But the last few decades have seen declines in the ambition and entrepreneurship of the state, at a time when global sustainability challenges have called for more and better leadership. How did this happen, why is this a problem for implementing policies consistent with the goals of ecological economics, and what can we do about it? In this episode we discuss these themes with Rosie Collington, the author alongside Prof Mariana Mazzucato of The Big Con: How the Consulting Industry Weakens our Businesses, Infantilizes our Governments and Warps our Economies. Rosie is a political economist at the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose at UCL, studying how governments can develop the ability to govern socio-economic transformations. Anastasia Kristensen's greatest gift is to weave an electrifying sonic thread through her DJ Sets. She gathers sounds from a vast array of styles, enthusiastically researches off-grid electronics and blends them together through an adventurous, if not infectious, mixing technique. Dance oriented Avantgarde - that is exactly her edge. Her BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix turned so many heads that it got nominated for the Best Essential Mix of 2022 and is a testament to her ability to select and synthesize.
To become the selector that she is today, Anastasia embraced non - conformity and fortitude throughout her life. Non - conformity, that means a musical curiosity that explores the less conventional places in electronic music, but it also means continuously aiming for her audience to let go on the dancefloor. At present she hosts regular all-nighters at Den Anden Side, a new underground venue in her hometown Copenhagen and holds a residency at Mainstream, the city's most reputable LGBTQ party. Both platforms stand for her versatility and community orientation and are key contributors to her experience of playing foggy high quality basements and festival stages dexterously and with devotion. I's a rare quality to perform with such an ease in these divergent ambiances. Even more so, to provide such an engaging variety of sounds there and to captivate the audiences in an instant. Whoever attends one of Kristensen's kaleidoscopic sets should be ready to get lost and experience the unpredictable. Having played the experimental UNSOUND Festival, and clubs like FOLD, BLITZ and Elysia in Basel, the Danish DJ convinced many knowledgeable crowds and gained praise for it. This is no different for her rare live performances - like the opening of the CTM Festival in 2018. To care for a community and to further build it up is of significant importance for the artist. Her 2020 efforts to curate the compilation “Rewire and Acquire” and bring 18 producers together in service of the organization “Equality Now”, show that she walks the talk intrepidly.
Being a producer, too, the energy of dance - oriented Avantgarde is detectable in her releases and remixes. Following the debut “Maxima” (2019) on the cutting edge outlet Houndstooth, the EP “Ascetic” on Warps sub- label Arcola exhibits a futuristic genre blend between electro, IDM and spooky techno. Houndstooth is also the home for her latest release “Volshebno” that captures mesmerizing dancefloor moments. Fittingly, “Volshebno” stands for “magic” in Anastasia's mother tongue, Russian. 2023 will be a continuation of her mission to represent musical curiosity and community, as Anastasia will host listening sessions in Copenhagen. Community Members will showcase music they love and tell the connected stories around them. Besides that, she will hold a residency at the highly reputable NTS Radio. By embodying authentic, tasteful curation and selection, by connecting individuals in communities they feel belonging to, Anastasia Kristensen will no doubt further transcend her inspiring artistic footprint into the electronic realm. In a post-apocalyptic world, the entire adult population has been wiped out by a virus outbreak. Having not been affected by the virus, children are left to survive in the world alone in the countryside and forest. These children have formed three main tribes, identifying themselves by different wear and makeup and following different philosophies. The Ants, led by Faygar (Zoe Robins), are farmers living in the countryside who worship and follow the ancestor Bray, relying on their faith to lead them to do what's right and stave off the evil energy of Zoot, another ancestor. The Barbs, led by Zora (Felicity Milovanovich), live in a safe part of the forest and hunt for their food, relying on each other to survive and live for the cause of their protection. The Ants and Barbs are rival factions who band together to survive. These factions are rivals until an outsider-turned-friend, Sky (Nick Fenton), stumbles along Dan (Rafe Custance), an Ant (who later becomes a Barb), and helps save him from the Warps led by the third tribe. The third tribe, The Privileged (lead by Flame, played by Cameron Wakefield), are bullies; they are an aristocratic group who only appreciate perfection and enslave other kids, whom they call the Discards. Discards serve the Privileged, farming for them, waiting on them, and serving them. Flame and The Privileged hate the Ants and Barbs, and vice versa, with the Privileged wanting to enslave all the Ants and Barbs and rule the whole countryside and forest. They fight each other, and the Ants and Barbs prevail, taking Flame as a prisoner and coming to an agreement with Harmony, Flame's former friend, and confidant, the new leader of the Privileged. All the children fear the Machines which roam the Forbidden Zone, which makes a large portion of the forest uninhabitable and dangerous. The end of the series introduces us to a new faction, the Birds. The other three tribes become friends, and the mysteries of the ancestors, the machines, and who controls them remain unknown.

Imprinting is a quirk of the immune system in which someone's initial exposure to a virus biases their immune response when they meet the same virus again.Studies are showing how imprinting shapes people's responses to SARS-CoV-2; those infected with earlier strains can mount weaker responses to a later Omicron infection. This phenomenon is dampening the hope that variant-tailored boosters will markedly reduce transmission of the virus, although researchers agree that variant-tailored boosters are worth getting because they still provide some immunity, and prevent serious illness. This is an audio version of our Feature: How your first brush with COVID warps your immunity Hosted on Acast. Together they will question how governments can reclaim leadership and drive innovation and growth in the face of economic and climate insecurity. This event is held in association with the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP)The UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) aims to develop a new framework for creating, nurturing and evaluating public value in order to achieve economic growth that is more innovation-led, inclusive and sustainable. We intend this framework to inform the debate about the direction of economic growth and the use of mission-oriented policies to confront social and technological problems. Our work will feed into innovation and industrial policy, financial reform, institutional change, and sustainable development.A key pillar of IIPP's research is its understanding of markets as outcomes of the interactions between different actors. In this context, public policy should not be seen as simply fixing market failures but also as actively shaping and co-creating markets. Re-focusing and designing public organisations around mission-led, public-purpose aims will help tackle the grand challenges facing the 21st century.IIPP is housed in The Bartlett, a leading global Faculty of the Built Environment at University College London (UCL), with its radical thinking about space, design and sustainability. Welcome to our first ever sleep story for the channel. You can of course listen to this at anytime, but this is designed to listen to prior to sleep. Sometimes the best thing prior to sleep is a story. This is a story originally titled: The Imitation Of The Earth By James StamersYou can read the full story here https://www.gutenberg.org/files/51682/51682-h/51682-h.htm He was in some dark, moving medium which pressed him gently and released him and pressed against him again with irregular rhythm. He could not feel his hands. He could not feel any part of his body, except a sort of itching in his calf. He thrust downward to relieve this mild irritation and, surprisingly, seemed to rise up. He seemed to be alive. He had no idea where, or even when, or whether these were valid questions, for the ship had been entering hyper-spacetime when they hit the asteroid belt. Warps and elongations took place in hyper-spacetime. Perhaps he was now a hyper-spaceman. He could recall his name. It was John Shepherd. He could remember objective events such as Doctor Adelitka Wynn creating a scene in the Mars terminal bar. Her sociology was better than her sense, as she accused him of making a pass at her. He would have liked to, perhaps, but ship's etiquette said: "Crews date, captains wait, space is not the place." He and she had been the last alive, and the last image he had seen on the screen had been a sun. Whose sun, which sun, and where were just uninformed speculations. But he was alive and conscious of himself. And he was buried deep in something..... The Secret Of The Trees Intro 00:00Sleep Relaxation 00:37Story: Imitation Of Earth By James Stamers 05:10 Buy My Art - Unique Sigil Magic And Energy Activation Through Flow Art. Keith doesn't think women should include pictures of their mothers with them in dating profiles. Mike thinks it makes lots of sense to do so. You can be the judge on this one, but a hint is it may just be a test of whether you're short- or long-term dating oriented. And this after Keith shamed Mike for sharing some pictures of "some prostitutes" earlier in the day. They were thousand-dollar escorts, thank you very much. High-end ladies of the night! Would a man always choose sex with a virtual partner who required no before-care or after-care over masturbating? Probably. But, he also would likely pick masturbation over a real partner a significant percentage of the time. Who wouldn't? Now, to Keith's enjoyment of still images of young ladies as part of his onanistic portfolio. Now, I prefer talkies, or at the very least moving images. At an absolute minimum, I like to watch a video of, say, a train moving in and out of a tunnel repeatedly. But I do have some grudging respect a man who is still anchored in 19th-century masturbation habits. “If everyone uses a 12-inch ruler to build a house, and then one day, the government wakes up, and they change out all the rulers for an 11-inch ruler, but they don't tell anybody…that distorts everything in the system because you're using that as a measure, and the same thing happens with money.”— Steven LubkaSteven Lubka is Managing Director of Private Client Services at Swan Bitcoin. In this interview, we discuss how the misallocation of money by central banks distorts money, destroys capital, and creates zombie companies. Steven calls for money to be left to find its natural state within a free market. - - - - Society has become accustomed to the intervention of central banks in the economy. The underlying narrative is that central banks have the power to direct the economy through the manipulation of money. A principle level is through the control of interest rates: artificial adjustments to the cost of borrowing money aimed at promoting or tempering growth. You don't have to be an economics expert though to know that central banks' interventions seem to have become excessive. We have had a decade of near-zero interest rates. In addition to this, central banks have heavily lent on money printing to maintain economic stability: one-fifth of all US dollars were printed in 2020 alone. These significant adjustments to the money supply set in train damaging second-order impacts. Given rising debt levels and recessionary forces, governments are seeking ways to stimulate growth. However, the economy has not been allowed to function normally for an extended period. We may therefore be in a position where significant businesses aren't able to operate with a more natural cost of money. Many businesses have developed in a period where the cost of money has been artificially low. This has created zombie companies, which need support to survive. This leads to a cascading series of issues: such companies divert resources from more efficient enterprises, but they are destined to fail, which destroys capital. It effectively hollows out parts of the economy. The misallocation of capital is therefore counterproductive: short-term stability is a mirage that hides long-term systemic vulnerability. Steven Lubka's thesis is that Bitcoin is the answer. It is a real tangible asset with a fixed monetary policy that enables price to be reflective of reality. The result is a market that can make rational decisions, build robust companies, and allow order to emerge In short, Bitcoin fixes the money.- - - - This episode's sponsors:Gemini - Buy Bitcoin instantlyLedn - Financial services for Bitcoin hodlersBitcasino - The Future of Gaming is herePacific Bitcoin - Bitcoin‑only event, Nov 10 & 11, 2022Ledger - State of the art Bitcoin hardware walletWasabi Wallet - Privacy by defaultTexas Blockchain Summit - Nov 17-18, 2022 | Austin, TexasBCB Group - Global digital financial Services-----WBD574 - Show Notes-----If you enjoy The What Bitcoin Did Podcast you can help support the show by doing the following:Become a Patron and get access to shows early or help contributeMake a tip:Bitcoin: 3FiC6w7eb3dkcaNHMAnj39ANTAkv8Ufi2SQR Codes: BitcoinIf you do send a tip then please email me so that I can say thank youSubscribe on iTunes | Spotify | Stitcher | SoundCloud | YouTube | Deezer | TuneIn | RSS FeedLeave a review on iTunesShare the show and episodes with your friends and familySubscribe to the newsletter on my websiteFollow me on Twitter Personal | Twitter Podcast | Instagram | Medium | YouTubeIf you are interested in sponsoring the show, you can read more about that here or please feel free to drop me an email to discuss options.

The research shows it's significant, especially for young girls, and that's true even when we all know these types of filters exist. First, you'll hear from researcher Claire Pescott. Her research and expertise focus on how social media filters influence children even as young as 10 years old.
