Award-winning filmmaker Justin Lerner's latest work, CADEJO BLANCO, takes a deep dive into the world of Guatemala's clicas, small disorganized gangs of young people who engage in illegal activity (robberies, drug dealing, violence) in order to survive. CADEJO BLANCO unfolds through the eyes of a Sarita, who lives with her sister Bea and mother, in a working-class neighborhood in Guatemala City. One night after a party, Bea doesn't come home. Convinced that her disappearance has something to do with Andrés, her sister's dangerous ex, Sarita manages to befriend him and infiltrate his gang. Narrowly avoiding death at every turn, and with an unwavering determination in the face of the men who underestimate her, Sarita becomes increasingly involved with Andrés and the ruthless, violent world of his gang. As she searches for answers about what happened to her sister, she realizes that the truth is a lot more complicated than she could have imagined. In writing the screenplay, for CADEJO BLANCO director, producer, and co-editor Justin Lerner talks about how he relied heavily on the biographies of the young people he met from the gangs of Puerto Barrios. Much of the story is based on their real experiences as they were told to Lerner: their daily conflicts, the dangers in joining a clica, losing friends to violence and crime. At the age of nine he migrated to the United States to be reunited with his parents. Zamora holds a BA from the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied and taught in June Jordan's Poetry for the People; and an MFA from New York University. He is the recipient of scholarships to Bread Loaf, Frost Place, Napa Valley, Squaw Valley, and VONA Writer's Conferences; and fellowships from CantoMundo and Colgate University where he is the Olive B. O'Connor fellow. His poems also appear in Best New Poets 2013, Indiana Review, Narrative, Ploughshares, Poet Lore, Theatre Under My Skin (Kalina Press: El Salvador), and elsewhere. Carlos Fuentes hizo un ejercicio de vida y lo convirtió en literatura que va de la A a la Z. Hizo una labor de discriminación, como si espulgara frijoles. Tomó la letra A y escribió una relación de palabras que inician con A y que eran temas posibles para desarrollar y de ahí eligió una palabra. El ejercicio literario lo tituló: “En esto creo.” Y fue un testimonio de confesión. Yo habría elegido, al estilo de Fuentes, una palabra, Noche, por ejemplo, y le habría confiado todos los temores, deseos y pasiones que aparecían en los corredores de mi casa en cuanto la tarde desaparecía y llegaba la noche con sus patas y ojos de Cadejo.
