Dec 17: Prof Sylvain Charlebois, Disturbing Trend in 2023 Spiraling Cost of Food

One of the most watched, disturbing and talked about realities of 2023 was the spiraling cost of food. We heard about consumer experiences and concerns regularly. This with 6.8 million Canadians, including 1.8 million children in Canada (U of T) experiencing food insecurity and food banks nationally stretched beyond their capacity to make up for the food shortfall. - There were questions about grocers engaging in profiteering at the expense of consumers and grocery chain CEO's were summoned to appear before parliament more than once. Food inflation outpaced general inflation for months on end. How do we assess 2023 and what should we expect for 2024? Guest: Professor Sylvain Charlebois. Director of the Agri Foods Lab at Dalhousie University and Project Lead for the 24th edition of Canada's Food Price Report 2024. Learn more about your ad choices. In this podcast episode, our special guest, Pierre Petelle, the President and CEO of CropLife Canada, discusses the organization's role and impact in the agricultural industry. CropLife represents companies that produce vital seed technologies and crop protection products in agriculture and public health. Pierre emphasized the evolution of these products, highlighting gene editing as a significant advancement that allows for more precise and affordable crop modifications. He also pointed out the organization's efforts to make science relatable to the public, stressing the importance of these technologies in preventing food waste, improving food affordability, and contributing to carbon sequestration. To help the public understand farming challenges and innovations, CropLife created "Real Farm Lives," a series that showcases Canadian farming families and their commitment to the land. Pierre encouraged an open-minded approach to agricultural technology, advocating for its role as a solution to many pressing environmental and economic issues. In the news, we talk about how Canada's Food Price Report for 2024 "landed," delving into the ethics and economics within the food industry and debating the implications of regulatory measures and the grocery code of conduct.   The conversation then shifts to food safety and recalls, touching on the Salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupes and the complexities of mitigating risks within the food supply chain. They discuss how regulation and consumer behaviour intersect, with Sylvain advocating for better risk communication and Michael highlighting the need for innovative solutions like vertical farming.Additionally, we explore McDonald's new strategy with their new CosMc's concept, aimed at capturing a younger demographic and filling a gap in the mid-afternoon snack segment. Lastly, we touch upon a unique legal case where a woman was given the option to work in fast food as a sentence for assault, reflecting on the creative approach to justice.Overall, the podcast covers the intricate balance between industry practices, consumer expectations, and regulatory frameworks, emphasizing the need for transparency and ethical conduct in addressing the food industry's challenges.Graveyard image Photo by Matthias Müllner on UnsplashAbout PierreInnovation in agriculture is helping Canadian farmers become more productive and sustainable than ever before. As president and CEO of CropLife Canada, my mission is to support our members and advocate for political and regulatory frameworks that continue to enable cutting edge agricultural technologies to come to market in Canada.I am responsible for the strategic direction and leadership of our organization. As an industry we are often faced with misinformation about agricultural technologies like pesticides and plant breeding innovations such as GMOs. I strongly believe in our role, working in partnership with the broader agricultural industry, in telling the positive story of modern agriculture. I am also a firm believer in the power of collaboration when it comes to advancing the common interests of the agriculture industry, which is why we work closely with our partners in the GrowCanada partnership. I'm energised about the future of Canadian agriculture because over the last few decades we've experienced dramatic change, fueled in large part by technological advancements. While farmers are facing some enormous challenges in their efforts to grow food for the world, I'm optimistic that the ingenuity of farmers and the innovation in the plant science industry will make for a bright future for agriculture and food production.About UsDr. Sylvain Charlebois is a Professor in food distribution and policy in the Faculties of Management and Agriculture at Dalhousie University in Halifax. Everything still feels expensive, but if you look at the numbers, inflation is falling quickly. Grocery prices are falling too, but they're still well above the overall inflation rate. And that makes prices three or six months down the line much tougher to predict. It's been well over a year since food prices began to spike all over the globe, and a number of complex systems have been behind the fluctuations. But with food prices no longer so closely indexed to inflation, and climate change and a volatile geopolitical situation only increasing—we can hope for the best, and perhaps plan for the worst.GUEST: Dr. Kelleen Wiseman, Academic Director, Master of Food and Resource Economics program at the university of British Columbia, one of the authors of the Canada's Food Price Report for 2023

Researchers say climate change is the elephant in the room when it comes to why we'll be paying more for groceries next year. The annual food price report estimates the average family will pay up to $487 more to feed themselves. Researchers say snowstorms, droughts and other weather events caused by climate change mean Canadian farmers will face challenges dealing with unpredictable crop yields, heat-wave livestock threats, pasture availability, and pest and disease outbreaks. Next year, researchers expect price increases in all eight food categories they track with the biggest jump - four to six per cent - in meat.     Guest: Sylvain Charlebois Professor in Food Distribution and Policy at Dalhousie University and Lead researcher of the Canada's Food Price Report

Libby Znaimer is joined by Simon Somogyi, Arrell Chair in the Business of Food and Associate Professor in the School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management at the University of Guelph. According to Canada's Food Price Report, Canadians can expect to see food prices rise by 2 to 4% in the year 2020. The report, produced by researchers from Dalhousie University and the University of Guelph, forecasts meat, for example, to go up by 4 to 6% in 2020. This comes at a time when the number of Canadians showing interest in plant-based protein food options is increasing. Researchers are saying that some of the influencing factors of this trend include the effects of climate change, global instability and more. Together, Libby and Simon discuss other foods that Canadians might see going up in price and other potential reasons for this trend. Listen live, weekdays from noon to 1, on Zoomer Radio!

If you love avocados, you are probably reeling from the recent price jump! As we reported earlier, avocado prices are soaring to the point that some Mexican restaurants have pulled guacamole from their menus. A wholesale case of 48 avocados is now selling for up to 100-dollars US, up from 36-dollars just a few months ago. Prices have jumped partly because of a poor growing season in California and low seasonal production in Mexico. However, avocados aren't the only produce item that's going to cost you more. According to Canada's Food Price Report, the average Canadian family can expect to spend $411 more on food in 2019, bringing their total yearly grocery bill to $12,157 thanks to more expensive fruit and vegetables.  Guest: Simon Somogyi Arrell Chair in the Business of Food and Associate Professor in the School of Hospitality, Food and Tourism Management at the University of Guelph
