Rob and Doug will join us to discuss this second excursion to Lake Michigan around the north side of Poverty Island looking for the wreckage of the salvage boat The Captain Lawrence. This salvage boat is said to have located the chests of gold using a diving bell. The Captain Lawrence also went down and finding it could lead the team to this French Treasure. A French treasure that was to fund the Confederates in 1863. Being chased by the Union Navy they reportedly threw the chests of gold overboard so it wouldn't fall into Union hands. Fresh-off a trip to Nikki's Liquors, Will tries Synder Bier Pretzel Marzen, a new collaboration between Snyder and popular Northeast beer brand Captain Lawrence. BUSINESS: Just about everyone on the planet was impacted by Monday's business storyline. Facebook and Instagram both went down due to an outage on Facebook's servers. This comes with suspicious timing, as director of security Antigone Davis went on CNBC only a few hours earlier to defend an accusation that Facebook prioritizes “profit over safety.” It was the worst outage in over two years for a social media group. We discuss exactly what went down on Monday and give a stab at what could've been the culprit. Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine Podcast

Steve Luke loves hops, and over a decade and a half working in the industry he’s learned quite a bit about brewing with them. Cloudburst (https://cloudburstbrew.com) is, effectively, his second act—a brewery built for the love of brewing after a career spent at larger breweries like Allagash, Captain Lawrence, and Elysian. Today, Luke blends the discipline and production precision he learned from larger-scale production with his passion for creating new hop-driven beers. In this episode of the podcast, Luke dives into his technical and creative approaches to designing hoppy beers. Along the way he discusses: The four components that define balance Creating dryness and drinkability without sacrificing hops punch Brewing different IPA expressions (hazy or West Coast) with a single yeast strain Approaching IPA design from both directions, backwards from a visualized flavor or forwards from an ingredient inspiration Minimizing flaked ingredients for longer stability Chasing lower dissolved oxygen levels in packaged beer Categorizing hops by flavor components and creating blends using his own visualization tools The five or six hops that can make or break an IPA The importance of contracting, and the imperfect science of selection Building layered hop character with more hot-side additions Water impact on hop expression Dry-hopping strategy to speed up reduction of diacetyl precursors And more. This second act is a labor of love for Luke. Cloudburst isn’t just a business, it’s a way to insure he has control over the creative process in what he brews, and that he can stay involved in doing what he loves—actually making the beer. The brewhouse team is two people, Zach Kornfeld and Luke, and they’re focused on remaining small and hands-on. “Why I started a brewery was because my passion is brewing,” Luke says. “Creating beers, making the beers. That’s something I don’t ever want to push myself out of. As far as growth goes, there’s only so big we can be. We’re in this happy spot of about 2,000 barrels per year, and we don’t see much more volume growth than that.” *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): As the brewing industry’s premier choice for glycol chilling, G&D Chillers has set the standard on quality, service, reliability and dedication to their customer’s craft. Michigan state University English Professor, Julian Chambliss, explains that the idea of town or community creation is not an exception for African Americans. The idea of creating ones own community because one isn’t able to get a fair shake was actually a common response to conditions such as the end of Slavery, the end of Reconstruction and the rise of Jim Crow. It was also one of the ways African Americans sought to carve out a path to the rights one enjoys as a full citizen of the United States such as voting, free and fair civic engagement, land ownership, the opportunity to prosper and education. A good example of this philosophy is the town of Eatonville, Florida. Eatonville is known as one of the first - and some would argue it is the first - incorporated all-Black town in the United States. Like Ocoee, Florida, which was explored in the previous two episodes, it is located in Orange County. Eatonville represents what is possible when - despite great odds - a community pools its resources, leans on informal safety nets such as faith and strong communal ties, musters a sense of resilience that is only possible after enduring generations of hardship and shares a collective dream of a better tomorrow. It was founded at a time when it was difficult for Black Americans to acquire land because many southern land owners refused to sell to them. However, an African American man named Joseph Clarke envisioned an all black town and was determined to make it happen. He discussed the idea with two white former Republican Union officers named Captain Eaton and Captain Lawrence, who both supported the idea. Eaton and Lawrence were invested in the idea of moral capitalism and believed that helping Blacks to purchase their own land and manage their own community could be a mutually beneficial allyship. This is how Joseph Clark and 26 other African American men were able to come into possession of the land they needed to found Eatonville. What is unique about Eatonville, is that it is one of a small number of all-black towns or settlements formed after the Civil War that still exists today. Throughout this time, it continued to exist in the Jim Crow south and beyond without disruption by violent race-based assaults such as those experienced in Ocoee, Perry and Rosewood, Florida. This is one of the reasons that African Americans in Eatonville were able to prosper in its early years and why they enjoyed a sense of freedom and security many other African American communities in Florida at the time did not. Guests in this episode include N.Y. Nathiri is an Executive Director for the Association to Preserve Eatonville Community as well as Michigan State University English Professor Julian Chambliss. Chambliss also has an appointment in History and the Val Berryman Curator of History at the MSU Museum at Michigan State University. In addition, he is a core participant in the MSU College of Arts & Letters’ Consortium for Critical Diversity in a Digital Age Research (CEDAR). Musical attributions 1. Burn the Ships and press on, there's no turning back at Able Ebenezer Brewing Co. Able Ebenezer co-founder isn't a New Hampshire native, he's a California boy.  But when Frizzelle and partner Carl Soderberg were looking for a place to call home the Granite State won it.  The brew scene was vibrant but not too crowded, and Frizzelle liked the Live Free or Die motto. They even named their brewery after a local hero, Ebenezer Mudgett, who defied the British crown in 1772 to fight oppressive laws.  Frizzelle shares the story of Ebenezer with us as we talk about his beer and brewery and the stories behind some of the beer names.  Their best seller Burn the Ships (a cherry wood smoked IPA) is a reference to a military tactic where you leave no option to retreat, success is the only choice.  We also sample their Victory Nor Defeat, a tasty DIPA.  Interestingly, both of the IPAs we got from this New England brewery were very clear.  Crazy. We also discuss the booming craft beer scene in New Hampshire, whether it feels crowded there, and what the density means as far as collaborations.  Frizzelle also shares how self-distribution was key to launching and growing his brewery. Able Ebenezer beer can be found only in New Hampshire.  If you're in the area you can visit the taproom at 31 Columbia Circle, Merrimack, NH. We met up with Scott & Kyran to discuss the next evolution in craft beverages! This is what happens when Captain Lawrence brewery has an abundance of fermented mash. The next logical step? Build out an addition to the brewery, buy a monster still that can be fed 300 gallons an hour and start distilling! The result? Amazing spirits ranging from whiskey, vodka and gin. AND they have great plans to create and collaborate on a whole range of other craft distilled spirits. In addition to the distillery they have a beautiful art-deco themed tasting room conducive to liberal imbibing."The tag line for the company — "Distilled and Hand Crafted Using Current Method for Traditional Enjoyment” — is meant to reflect the here and now."Current can mean a lot of things," Vaccaro told The Journal News/lohud. "Distilling has always been considered something old; we're trying to modernize that and put a current spin on our spirits."What sets Current Spirits apart is the continuous column still, which allows distiller Kyran Tompkins to keep the gin flowing (more or less). In more technical terms, it allows the spirits to be in a constant process of distillation, meaning they're capable of drastically higher production than pot stills, which require cleaning after each batch. Column stills also provide a purer, cleaner distillate, he said."

As we enter the home stretch of our Salute to Westerns, we look at two films that use the Western genre as a blank canvas for telling interesting stories: The Proposition and El Topo. One features Guy Pearce as a Australian outlaw who is tasked with killing his brother played by Danny Huston; the other is a surrealist western by the master auteur Alejandro Jodorowsky. We are joined by Mike White from the Projection Booth podcast, as well as having an interview with Robert Morgan who played Captain Lawrence in The Proposition. As always, you can follow Chris Stachiw on Twitter at @HeelStach, John Lein at @johnlein1, The Projection Booth at @proboothcast, and Kulture Shocked at @KultureShocked. You can also subscribe to the Kulturecast on iTunes here. Also, don't forget to check out our official Facebook page for news, upcoming reviews, contests, and new content.

What is the overlap between brewing and distilling? We’re here to find out on this week’s episode of Beer Sessions Radio. Our host Jimmy Carbone is joined once again by Jen Schwertman of Blind Tiger, and by a bunch of awesome booze guests. Michael Kinstlick of Coppersea Distillery is in the studio to talk about his recently licensed distillery, as well as the spirit-making process. Hear Michael talk about the progress of the craft spirit movement, and how he believes that home-distilling will one day no longer be associated with illegal moonshine. Matt Barclay and Justin Israelson from Sycamore Bar and Flowershop are also in the house to talk about some of their favorite craft spirits, as well as some of the artisanal liquors in their bar. Gregg Glaser briefly calls in to talk about some of his favorite brewery/distillery combinations, and the gang talks about some of their favorite craft beer from Green Flash, Captain Lawrence, and Firestone Walker! This episode has been brought to you by GreatBrewers.com. “So if you’re going to make any kind of grain-based distilled product – vodka, gin, whiskey – you have to make a beer first. So you make a fermented grain at about 5% alcohol, and that goes into your stills.” — Michael Kinstlick on Beer Sessions Radio “Being a brewery and a distillery- once you start making all of these products, you get to start aging your beers. There’s a lot more you can play around with.” — Justin Israelson on Beer Sessions Radio
