In 2020, I sent out questionnaires to some of the top, more established hunting outfitters and professional hunters in South Africa. I asked them for guidance and advice that they would pass on to new PHs. From that info, I wrote the book Take It From Us - A compilation of advice and guidance on becoming a quality Professional hunter. Over the coming few weeks, I will read the book chapter by chapter and the responses to the questionnaires given by the outfitters. If you would like a copy of the book in PDF format, send an email to jonomchugh@gmail.com, it's completely free and all I ask for in return is a positive review on either Spotify or Apple podcasts. Enjoy the episode.

In The Making of Florida's Universities: Public Higher Education at the Turn of the Twentieth Century (UP of Florida, 2023), Carl Van Ness describes the remarkable formative years of higher education in Florida, comparing the trajectory to that of other states and putting it in context within the broader history and culture of the South. Central to this story is the Buckman Act of 1905, a state law that consolidated government support to three institutions and prompted decades of conflicts over where Florida's public colleges and universities would be located, who would head them, and who would manage their affairs. Van Ness traces the development of the schools that later became the University of Florida, Florida State University, and Florida A&M University. He describes little-known events such as the decision to move the University of Florida from its original location in Lake City, as well as a dramatic student rebellion at Florida A&M University in response to attempts to restrict Black students to vocational education and the subsequent firing of the president in 1923. The book also reflects on the debates regarding Florida's normal schools, which provided coursework and practical training to teachers, a majority of whom were women. Utilizing rare historical records, Van Ness brings to light events in Florida's history that have not been examined and that continue to affect higher education in the state today. Carl Van Ness is university librarian emeritus at the University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries. Katie Coldiron is based at Florida International University. She is Outreach Program Manager for the Digital Library of the Caribbean at FIU Libraries and doctoral student in the FIU Department of History. Learn more about your ad choices. A man with a passion for the dangerous, subversive, and avant garde; who eschewed the middle brow and loved the urbane and modern. Known in his life not just as a man of taste, but a tastemaker, someone who set the tone for elite cultural society in his lifetime; the white author, critic and photographer Carl Van Vechten became enchanted with the Harlem Renaissance, approached Black cultures as a source of ideas that he could take and exploit, and perpetuated racist stereotypes in his work.

“THE MORBID OBSESSION OF CARL VAN COSEL” and More Strange True Stories! #WeirdDarknessThe man wired the woman’s bones together using coat hangers, and fitted her face with glass eyes. As her skin began to decompose, he replaced it with silk cloth that had been soaked in wax and plaster. When her hair fell out, he fashioned a wig using her real hair which he was able to obtain after her funeral. He filled her dead and decaying body with rags in order to try and keep her original form and he dressed his corpse girlfriend in her own clothing, stockings, jewelry, and gloves. He also used copious amounts of perfume, disinfectants, and preserving agents to mask the odor and slow the decomposition of the body. He had to – because he kept her body in his own bed. IN THIS EPISODE: Legend has it a ghost told the building’s architect to take the job. We’ll look at the creepy history behind the construction of the Bradbury Building in downtown Los Angeles. (The Occult And The Bradbury Building) *** You expect strange on-the-job tales from those who work in or near graveyards, or those who are close to the dead such as mortuaries, and even hospitals. But the brave men and women in law enforcement have a few stories of their own to tell. (Police and the Paranormal) *** Did 16-year-old Grace Marks of “Alias Grace” fame, actually help murder her employer and his lover — or was she unfairly locked away? (The True Story Behind ‘Alias Grace’) *** A woman finds a ghostly companion in her bed – every night. (Possibly Friendly Entity) *** A man’s love for a woman lasts even past her death, to the point of his living with her corpse. One year ago, the New Start Career Network launched to address one of the more intractable and insidious problems facing New Jersey: long-term unemployment for older workers. New Jersey houses one of the highest percentages of long-term-unemployed individuals in the nation, the impact of which negatively influences our economy and our families. Thanks to the leadership of the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University, within only one year, the New Start Career Network has served over 1,600 members with the support of over 160 volunteer career coaches and numerous partners. The New Start Career Network has earned the praise of the United States Secretary of Labor, among several others. Most importantly, the New Start Career Network has made a tangible difference in the lives of our state’s citizens. Joining New Start New Jersey Chair and Co-Founder Tammy Murphy to discuss the first year and coming years of the New Start Career Network are: Carl Van Horn, Distinguished University Professor at Rutgers University and Director of the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development; and Maria Heidkamp, Director of the New Start Career Network.
