This week's episode might hold the record for longest title, but we'd expect nothing less from the 1940s, an era when every man had an orchestra and every orchestra had a random lady singer. Andrew and Dan are about to learn at least 2 facts about this Glen Gray hit, but not until they meticulously comb through this year's Oscar nominations. Because that's what this show is in a nutshell!

The Casa Loma Orchestra was an American dance band active from 1929 to 1963. Until the rapid multiplication in the number of swing bands from 1935 on, the Casa Loma Orchestra was one of the top North American dance bands. With the decline of the big band business following the end of World War II, it disbanded in 1947. However, from 1957 to 1963, it re-emerged as a recording session band in Hollywood, made up of top-flight studio musicians under the direction of its most notable leader of the past, Glen Gray. The reconstituted band made a limited number appearances live and on television and recorded fifteen LP albums for Capitol Records before Gray died in 1963.

The book that was included in the set was called 1939: A Real Dream Of A Year.  These are recreations of all famous swing songs with the assistance of Billy May Orchestra and Glenn Gray's Casa Loma Orchestra. Vocals by Helen Forrest and Trummy Young except on this show I am playing the oringinal recordings if possible. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

This is part two of the Time Life records set I started last week. These records were originally recorded in 1971 by Billy May and His Orchestra/Glen Gray's Casa Loma Orchestra. Those were recreations featuring many of the musicians who were on the original recordings. Today's program features the music from the set of 1938-1939. I have this box set and thought that instead of hearing the recreations that it would be interesting to listen to the originals. So I'm borrowing the playlist and presenting the original recordings. Included with the albums was a nice book which told about the swing era. The book from the 1938-1939 set featured an essay on Where Swing Came From. I hope you enjoy the music in part two of Time Life's the Swing Era. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

The Revisited series continues this week with a look back at the music and career of Glenn Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra. As an orchestra they predated Benny Goodman and the start of the swing era. They had some excellent musicians and had a few big hits in the 30's and 40's. I'll be playing some of these numbers as we look back at the career of the Casa Loma Orchestra. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

Bob is back, three from him. Lovely 30s music and vocals 'On a steamer coming over,' 1933, from Billy Cotton. Eleven times married Charlie Barnet with another mode of transport 'Sky liner.' Think we need a new copy of that record!  Also up The Dixie Marimba Players, The Casa Loma Orchestra, The Deep River Boys,  Eddie Condon and Joe 'Fingers' Carr, who was in fact Lou Busch. The intriguing singer Billy Banks. Primarily known as a female impersonator on record- sounding male here with the jazz standard 'Margie.' Our oldest record is by GH Ghirgwin, 'Asleep in the Deep,' from 1912. Chirgwin act was 'black face.' An oddly popular style of entertainment until the 1970s. Remember the BBC series The Black and White Minstrel show?  I don't usually play the genre but Chirgwin's vocal performance is a straight one and his story is interesting. As is George Price. Performing at the age of six he impressed the mighty Caruso.  His stardom was brought to an abrupt halt when he fell out with Jacob Schubert, the theatre magnet. He did return to entertainment though and he shows a strong, unusual voice.  Patti Page sings about Johnny Guitar, 'My restless lover.  Its another naughty ending with Ozzie Nelson and 'The man who come around'.

Camel Caravan was a musical variety radio program, sponsored by Camel cigarettes, that aired on NBC Radio and CBS Radio from 1933 to 1954. Various vocalists, musicians and comedy acts were heard during the 21 years this show was on the air, including such talents as Benny Goodman, Georgia Gibbs, Anita O'Day and Vaughn Monroe. It debuted December 7, 1933, on CBS as a showcase for Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra. Deane Janis was the vocalist and Walter O'Keefe supplied the comedy along with Stoopnagle and Budd. Broadcast on Tuesdays and Thursdays, it continued until June 25, 1936. On June 30, 1936 the show was reformatted, featuring Nathaniel Shilkret and his orchestra and Benny Goodman and his swing band, with novelist Ruppert Hughes as Master of Ceremonies and vocalists Martha Tilton and Johnny Mercer. A Los Angeles Times picture caption notes that Gladys Swarthout was the guest artist on the initial broadcast. Shilkret left the show on September 22, 1936. Jack Oakie's College was added to the hour on December 29, 1936. While this aired on Tuesdays on CBS until June 20, 1939, another Benny Goodman Camel Caravan (often subtitled The Camel Hot Club) was heard Saturdays on NBC during 1939. Eddie Cantor starred in another CBS Camel Caravan broadcast from March 28, 1938 to June 26, 1939. The CBS show was taken over by Bob Crosby on June 27, 1939. Others who starred on this series during the years were Xavier Cugat and his Orchestra, comedian Herb Shriner, Abbott and Costello, Jimmy Durante and Garry Moore (when it was known as Camel Comedy Caravan), Jack Carson, Mel Blanc, and Bob Hawk (emcee of the quiz program Thanks to the Yanks, later known as The Bob Hawk Show).

Every week on Big Band Bash I try to present a variety of bands and formats. Sometimes the leaders are well known and sometimes they are not but I always try to present good music from the bands of that era. Today's show is on an excellent trumpet player who led a big band but who didn't quite achieve the fame of some of the other leaders. Today we are going to spotlight the band and trumpet of Sonny Dunham. Sonny played for a while with the Casa Loma Orchestra and then he led his own band. In addition to some of the sides that feature the Dunham orchestra, I have a 30 minute radio remote featuring Sonny's band on the One Night Stand show. There is a lot of great music on the show and I hope you enjoy this look at Sonny Dunham and his Orchestra. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

When the big bands went into decline after World War II the orchestra disbanded in 1947. Glen Gray started out playing saxophone in the band and then went on to become its leader. Bud shares his knowledge and expansive music collection to uncover the life and music of Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra.
