The Bloobcast start off the year with a tribute to the great creative mind David Lynch in a look at one of his lesser discussed works Wild at Heart. They discuss how the movie compares to Lynch's other movies, crossovers of cast between productions, the absurdity of playing an Elvis cover at a Metal show, the several references to the Wizard of Oz, and the stupidity of 2004's The Butterfly Effect. In last week's blog, we looked at a case from Maine (we failed to identify the location) involving two young men, David Stephens and Glen Gray, who reported encounters with multiple UFOs, a period of missing time, physical symptoms, possible poltergeist activity, and a visit by a man wearing a dark blue suit (not quite an MiB) who told Stephens, “Better keep your mouth shut if you know what's good for you.” The account up to this point, as reported by Brent Raynes in the article (page 12 of the pdf) headlined “The Twilight Side of a UFO Encounter” published in the July 1976 Vol. 22, No. 2 Flying Saucer Investigator, all came from conscious recall by Stephens and Gray. Stephens later underwent regressive hypnosis to try to fill in the missing time and details came out that involved possibly being aboard a craft and examined by strange, non-human creatures. Read more →Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/podcast-ufo--5922140/support.

When we roll into Sal's Speakeasy tomorrow night for The Flood's monthly gig, we'll bring with us a tune that has been rocking audiences for more than eight decades. And that, brothers and sisters, is the definition of a hit!Bob Russell's Big BreakOur tale begins with a young man named Bob Russell who was making his living in New York as an advertising copywriter, but who also nurtured a love for music and theater. He had dabbled in writing material for vaudeville and later wrote for movies, but his legacy was to be on the radio as a renowned lyricist. His big break came 81 years ago when he wrote memorable lyrics for a stirring Duke Ellington melody.Earlier, Duke had composed a number called "Never No Lament,” which his orchestra recorded in 1940. And what an orchestra it was! In fact, it was perhaps the best in the long Ellington history. To jazz fans, it is known as the “Webster-Blanton” band (because it had Ben Webster on tenor sax and Jimmy Blanton on bass), but they weren't the only stars on hand. The recording also was enriched by Johnny Hodges on alto, Barney Bigard on clarinet, Cootie Williams in trumpet and Harry Carney on bari. Whew!A Song for Its TimeThe instrumental was well received, but then Bob Russell came along with some dynamite lyrics that gave the melody a whole new life as "Don't Get Around Much Anymore."In his lyrics, Russell meant to tell the story of a jilted lover who prefers to stay home rather than be haunted by memories of happier times spent at dances and nightspots. However, the timing of the song's release gave many listeners a whole different — more poignant — perspective. It was 1942 and America had just entered World War II. Couples across the country were separating as young people put on uniforms and shipped out. Against that backdrop, many listeners heard the song as the passionate promise of a lonely lover to put such good times on hold for the war's duration. It's no wonder that within a year of Ellington releasing the song, no fewer than three versions were on the charts at the same time. Duke's original was joined by renditions from The Ink Spots and from Glen Gray.(An amusing sidebar on this song concerns the first line of Russell's lyrics. What Bob opened with was, “Missed the Saturday dance,” but that sometimes is misheard as “Mister Saturday dance” or “Mister Saturday night,” much to the amusement of musicians who still get these as requests.)Hits Just Keep On Comin'Russell could have rested on his laurels. From the mid-1940s to today, “Don't Get Around Much Anymore” has been recorded by everyone from Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole to Sam Cooke, The Coasters and B.B. King to Paul McCartney, Dr. John and Willie Nelson. But Bob was just getting started. In the 1940s, he wrote more songs with Ellington, notably the hits “Do Nothin' 'til You Hear from Me” and “I Didn't Know About You.” In the 1950s, he turned to writing music for films. The movies The Girl Most Likely, Blue Gardenia and Matter of WHO all included Russell title songs. In the 1960s, teaming with the up-and-coming music superstar Quincy Jones, Bob was nominated for Academy Awards for two of their collaborations, their theme for For Love of Ivy and for “The Eyes of Love," from the film Banning. Bob's Final HitRussell's last song was “He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother,” co-written with Bobby Scott, to whom Russell was introduced at a California nightclub by the great lyricist Johnny Mercer. It was at the end of Bob's life — he was dying of lymphoma — and he and Scott met only three times, but they managed to collaborate on a song that became a worldwide hit for The Hollies in 1969 and for Neil Diamond the following year.Just before his death in 1970, Russell was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2004, he was posthumously awarded ASCAP's lifetime achievement award.Come Out for a Sal's Saturday Night!Bob Russell's greatest song — his break-through “Don't Get Around Much Anymore” — is on tap when we head back to Ashland's wonderful Sal's Italian Eatery & Speakeasy this Saturday night. Flood sweetheart Michelle Hoge — back from her world travels with husband Rich — is driving in from Cincinnati to join us on stage for the evening. If you know Michelle, you know that the joint is always jumping when The Chick Singer is in the room. Our brother Sam St. Clair can't make the scene this month, but The Flood's reed section will be in the good hands of the man whom Sam calls his “over-study.” Jim Rumbaugh, who recently won Ohio's harmonica championship, has sat in with us many times over the years. In fact, Jim and Michelle were both on the bandstand back in December when The Flood played its debut Sal's gig. (Here's a video that Pamela Bowen shot during that memorable night.)So, we sure hope you'll get your glad rags on and come party with us Saturday night at Sal's, 1624 Carter Ave. in beautiful downtown Ashland, Ky. We play from 6 to 9. Tables sometimes fill up early, so reservations are a very good idea. Call (606) 393-1312 and tell ‘em you want a table near the band. This is a public episode. The Casa Loma Orchestra was an American dance band active from 1929 to 1963. Until the rapid multiplication in the number of swing bands from 1935 on, the Casa Loma Orchestra was one of the top North American dance bands. With the decline of the big band business following the end of World War II, it disbanded in 1947. However, from 1957 to 1963, it re-emerged as a recording session band in Hollywood, made up of top-flight studio musicians under the direction of its most notable leader of the past, Glen Gray. The reconstituted band made a limited number appearances live and on television and recorded fifteen LP albums for Capitol Records before Gray died in 1963.

The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless, AFN programs were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them, and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programs available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field. The mobile stations reported on front line activities and fed the news reports back to studio locations in London.

Camel Caravan was a musical variety radio program, sponsored by Camel cigarettes, that aired on NBC Radio and CBS Radio from 1933 to 1954. Various vocalists, musicians and comedy acts were heard during the 21 years this show was on the air, including such talents as Benny Goodman, Georgia Gibbs, Anita O'Day and Vaughn Monroe. It debuted December 7, 1933, on CBS as a showcase for Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra. Deane Janis was the vocalist and Walter O'Keefe supplied the comedy along with Stoopnagle and Budd. Broadcast on Tuesdays and Thursdays, it continued until June 25, 1936. On June 30, 1936 the show was reformatted, featuring Nathaniel Shilkret and his orchestra and Benny Goodman and his swing band, with novelist Ruppert Hughes as Master of Ceremonies and vocalists Martha Tilton and Johnny Mercer. A Los Angeles Times picture caption notes that Gladys Swarthout was the guest artist on the initial broadcast. Shilkret left the show on September 22, 1936. Jack Oakie's College was added to the hour on December 29, 1936. While this aired on Tuesdays on CBS until June 20, 1939, another Benny Goodman Camel Caravan (often subtitled The Camel Hot Club) was heard Saturdays on NBC during 1939. Eddie Cantor starred in another CBS Camel Caravan broadcast from March 28, 1938 to June 26, 1939. The CBS show was taken over by Bob Crosby on June 27, 1939. Others who starred on this series during the years were Xavier Cugat and his Orchestra, comedian Herb Shriner, Abbott and Costello, Jimmy Durante and Garry Moore (when it was known as Camel Comedy Caravan), Jack Carson, Mel Blanc, and Bob Hawk (emcee of the quiz program Thanks to the Yanks, later known as The Bob Hawk Show).

This is Part 2 of our look at the Time Life records project called "The Swing Era". It was a ten volume set with three records included in each volume. Today we turn to the years of 1941-1942. The songs were rerecorded by the bands of Billy May and Glen Gray. I have this set and thought instead of hearing the recreations that it would be interesting to hear the originals. So I'm borrowing the playlist and presenting the original recordings. There are about 30 songs so I'm going to break it up into two parts. I hope you enjoy the music. 1940 - 1941 were good years for the big bands as they were full of great music. For the next two weeks I am going to be playing another program from the Time-Life series, "The Swing Era". This was a really good series presented in two year segments. Each set came with three records and a nice book telling about the music in the set. I discovered a few of the sets at the local library and promptly dubbed them to tape and played them quite often. The music in "The Swing Era" were recreations by the bands of Billy May and Glen Gray. I have elected to try and play the original recordings. I hope you enjoy this Whitman's sampler of big band music from 1940 and 1941. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

Glen Gray, leader of the Casa Loma Orchestra, was born on June 7th 1906. The Casa Loma Orchestra was a popular American dance band active from 1927 to 1963. When the big bands went into decline after World War II the orchestra disbanded in 1947. Glen Gray started out playing saxophone in the band and then went on to become its leader. In 1956, he went back into the studio to record the first of what became a series of LPs for Capitol Records. Bud shares his knowledge and expansive music collection to uncover the life and music of Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra.
