How to Build a Thriving Podcast Community: Insights from Kendall Breitman, RiversideFM's Community Manager

In the ever-growing world of podcasting, building a strong community around your show is essential. But how exactly do you foster such engagement? Kendall, the Community Manager at Riverside FM joins me to talk all about it. Here are some key takeaways from our conversation, providing you with actionable tips on building and nurturing a vibrant podcast community. Building a community requires tailoring your efforts to meet the unique needs of your audience. Kendall highlighted that no two communities are the same, and the most successful ones are those that respond to their members' actual wants and needs. Essentially, your community should reflect the interests and desires of its members. To better serve your community, it's crucial to understand their motivations. Kendall suggested that direct conversations with your audience are invaluable. Asking them questions about their goals, challenges, and preferences can provide insights that help you shape a community that resonates with them. Kendall advised treating negative feedback as an opportunity to demonstrate the human side of your brand. Instead of viewing it as an affront, see it as a chance to engage, listen, and explain your actions. Personal responses and transparency can turn a disgruntled member into a loyal advocate. When launching a new community or reviving a dormant one, take the lead in starting conversations. Kendall noted that it's essential to post regularly and encourage interaction until the community gains momentum and members feel comfortable contributing on their own. Building a strong podcast community is about creating meaningful connections, responding to the needs of your audience, and fostering a space where members feel valued. For those looking to build or strengthen their podcast communities, these actionable tips from our conversation provide a valuable roadmap to success. "Don't underestimate the power of a pause. It allows you to recharge and refocus."We have been grinding for nearly 365 days to get to this place right here, right now. If you are like me you are torn between "I want to sleep for a year" and "I can't wait to put this year behind me and move forward." But our best bet is to lean into the pause. To give ourselves the space and time to rest, recharge...to pause. By doing so we can start to see what's most important and where we truly want to go next. There are times like these that are natural pauses, but what is the impact that we can create in our lives if we were to intentionally build in pauses daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly? In today's Surviving to Thriving Podcast, we talk about:Giving ourselves permission to take a pause for clarity, strength and rest. How to use a simple "should" exercise to help you narrow your initiatives down.My method for creating pauses daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly. If you are feeling torn between rest and leaping, take a few minutes to listen to this episode to get intentional tools to set you up for success. What to listen to next:Episode 65: DOING MORE WITH LESS: The Power in 10 Minutes A DayEpisode 63: INTENTION: The Key to Living in the Present and Not on Auto PilotEpisode 59: THE EASY WAY OUT: It Doesn't Exist. "Visualization is daydreaming with a purpose." -Bo BennettThrowing out ideas, initiatives and goals is the easy part. Getting them over the finish line is the near impossible part. I talk a lot about daily practices and actions and breaking big into little as tactical measures to help us succeed. They serve as the "push" we need to stay on the course. But they alone will not get us through the hard times when we just plum lose our energy and our steam. What we need is a "pull" to be our backup when willpower and discipline fall to the wayside. This week I share my framework for visualizing our success to create that "pull" that we need. That visceral connection to our goal that we must create out of our intuition and not our of our heads.  In today's Surviving to Thriving Podcast, I walk you through my framework for creating a solid visualization of you AFTER you have reached your goal and how to use that to create a failproof action plan, including:Why goal and action setting isn't enough to succeed. How to create your own meditative visualization. How to utilize the visualization to set yourself up for success, now and into the future. If you truly want to follow through on all of your declarations, resolutions, goals, and proclamations--this is the episode for you!Get your Crazed to Calm guide plus ALL THE BONUSES to get my Ideal Holiday Guided Visualization that you can use now for the holidays and for any initiative in the future!https://bit.ly/40LCYRAWhat to listen to next:Episode 17: MANIFEST: My 8 Steps to Manifest Your DreamsEpisode 52: INTENTION SETTING: How To Make Your Goals StickEpisode 53: YOUR WORD: Intuitive Vision Boarding Process for Finding Your Word of the YearNeed more than a podcast to get you back on track? "The best view comes after the hardest climb." --Benjamin FranklinAs moms we have been in survival mode for so long that we can't even see it for that. It's just become our natural state. As a result, we are prone to being stuck and blaming ourselves for our inability to get ourselves going. But this week we talk about how survival mode is not only dictating how we treat ourselves body, mind, spirit, and place, but also how we do our holidays. If we want to thrive in the holidays, we must first identify where we are just surviving. Where we have been dragging traditions along just because. And stop and just think about how we can do things differently. If turning the calendar to December sends you into a fit of twitches and makes you want to curl up in a ball and hide until January, then this is the episode for you.Today on the Surviving to Thriving Podcast, I challenge you to look at your holiday and family traditions with a new lens. To really look at what it includes and why you continue to include them.We revisit the idea of survival mode and how it is the origin of our stucknessWe discuss the fact that you have everything within you RIGHT NOW to thrive both in your life and in your holidaysAnd then I challenge you to look with fresh eyes on every aspect of your holidays to lean into what matters mostI want you to think of your holidays as a trip you are packing for each year. Just before his 39th birthday, Allan Misner had a wake up call. While vacationing at a tropical resort, he tried to play volleyball, but got too tired to stay in the game. Once an athlete, he had let himself go as work stress, a toxic relationship and, frankly, poor health choices had gotten him to well over 250 pounds. As he sat on the beach, the water lapping at his feet, he realized he needed to make a change and decided to improve his lifestyle and reclaim his fitness. Over the next eight years, he rode countless waves of wellness and fatness. It was this rollercoaster ride that made him realize that a decision wasn't enough. So, one day, while lying on the bed of a hotel room, hung-over and fat again, he made a commitment to his health and well-being. Today, Allan Misner is a National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certified Personal Trainer and a Functional Aging Institute (FAI) Certified Functional Aging Specialist. He is the creator of the thriving 40+ Fitness Community, providing one-on-one and group fitness coaching, nutritional guidance, and personal training for clients over the age of 40. Join Meg as she interviews Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani about why you are sick enough to seek treatment, and how medical professionals often unintentionally invalidate our eating disorders with outdated science and training, thin worship and medical fat phobia. Listen to hear Dr. G's advice on how to break free from the "I'm not sick enough" mindset. About Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani: Dr. Gaudiani is an eating disorders expert physician and the Founder and Medical Director of the Gaudiani Clinic. Board Certified in Internal Medicine, she completed her undergraduate degree at Harvard, medical school at Boston University School of Medicine, and her internal medicine residency and chief residency at Yale. In 2008, she was one of the founding team members of the ACUTE Center for Eating Disorders at Denver Health. After seven great years there, she left as its Medical Director to pursue her vision of outpatient care, founding the Gaudiani Clinic. During her years at ACUTE, Dr. Gaudiani became a nationally recognized internist for her work on the medical complications of eating disorders. Dr. Gaudiani's book, Sick Enough: A Guide to the Medical Complications of Eating Disorders During the more than seven years that she's helped run the highest level of care in the country, providing definitive medical stabilization to critically ill patients with eating disorders, Dr. Gaudiani discovered that there are hardly any doctors who understand eating disorders. Even when people have a great mental health and nutritional outpatient team, they almost always lack a medical doctor in their community who has the expertise, time, and interest in providing superb care that motivates recovery and wellness. This may mean that patients have been seen by a physician who doesn't understand the nuances of an eating disorder, either from the emotional or the physical perspective. It may mean that eating disorder treatment professionals have no physician backup to support patients while they continue doing vital outpatient therapeutic work. It may mean that loved ones have not encountered a doctor who can provide families with the reassurance and expertise needed to diagnose, treat, and communicate clearly the medical complications associated with eating disorders. Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani wants patients to be safe as they continue outpatient therapy, clinicians to feel supported as they do that therapy, and families to be clear about what's going on medically. Outline of the Episode: [01:28] It is inherent to the disease, not to the state the patient is actually in [05:22] Why Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani named her book, Sick Enough [10:01] Most eating disorders can't be measured [15:05] Doctors almost always approach weight wrong [21:31] The house is on fire – a metaphor [25:10] We need to treat eating disorders like any other disorder [30:03] Its important to keep naming what's wrong [35:39] A Powerful Motivator: An Individual's Own Goals and Values [40:06] Holding hope is sometimes scary [44:12] A list of your current self and your future ideal self Resources: Website: https://www.gaudianiclinic.com/team Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gaudianiclinic/ Book: https://www.amazon.com/Sick-Enough-Jennifer-L-Gaudiani/dp/0815382456 Follow Meg McCabe and the Full and Thriving Podcast on: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/meg_mccabe/ Follow Meg McCabe and the Full and Thriving Podcast on: Instagram (@Meg_McCabe) and (@The_RecoveryCollective) About our host, Meg: Meg is a CCI certified Eating Disorder Recovery Coach and Founder of The Recovery Collective. When you're really present in the moment, whether it's a holiday or not, your thoughts don't get consumed with food even though there's a lot around. Whether there's cake, pizza, turkey, or whatever. To you, food is just food, and it isn't connected to feelings of guilt, shame and regret. That's what you call food freedom. In today's episode of Full and Thriving: An Eating Disorder Recovery Podcast, Sammy Previte RD, LDN, CPT talks about what intuitive eating is about, how you can fight diet culture during the holidays, what you need to keep in mind regarding people who love to make comments about other people's body and diet, and the tips that can help you react better to unsolicited comments about your eating habit. How do you really respond to unsolicited comments about your body? In different places, restrictions are now being loosened. Because of this, some activities are becoming more regular compared to during the lockdown. So what does that mean? Having to show up again. And if we're to really admit — that can definitely make us conscious. In this situation, role-playing and awareness can help. First, role-play the situations wherein people may make comments about your body. By doing so, you put yourself in a scene where you will have to respond. Now, how would you want to answer? Next, be aware that you can also react without being emotional. If that's unlikely, walking away can be an option. Whatever is the case, it helps to remember that whatever someone says about your body has everything to do with their relationship with theirs and nothing to do with yours. Find out how Sammy Previte decides when to walk away in this episode of Full and Thriving: An Eating Disorder Recovery Podcast! About Sammy Previte RD, LDN, CPT: Sammy is a Registered Dietitian, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, Certified Personal Trainer, owner of Find Food Freedom, co-host of What The Actual Fork Podcast, and host of the Find Food Freedom Podcast! Sammy enjoys working with all different populations. Her favorite part about being a dietitian is helping others create peace with food. Many people believe that dietitians are the food police–this is simply untrue. Sammy believes that food was made to provide our bodies with nourishment and pleasure. Sammy treats each client with individualized care based on their specific needs. Sammy and the entire team at Find Food Freedom are proud to say that they do not support the $72 billion diet industry. Find Food Freedom is rooted in Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size (HAES). Find Food Freedom believes that all humans deserve fair, unbiased health care regardless of the size of their bodies. Full and Thriving: An Eating Disorder Recovery Podcast

Healing from an eating disorder is a whole journey. It lays down multiple steps that you need to take one by one. To get your recovery moving, one must learn how to sit with the discomfort of the process. And doing so starts with accepting that nobody has perfect digestion and relationship with food—not even the fully recovered. In today's episode of Full and Thriving: An Eating Disorder Recovery Podcast, Kate Noel explains the restrictive effects of diet culture on healthy digestion, what eating disorders help us to realize about our digestion, the essence of our relationship and beliefs regarding food, the struggles of discerning food anxiety from food sensitivity, and where you need to put your trust more in your journey to recovery. Learn from Kate Noel about the recovery thinking traps you need to avoid in this episode of Full and Thriving: An Eating Disorder Recovery Podcast! Do you trust your body? Diet culture has perpetuated the mindset of many—in the past few years—the need to manage everything about their diet. "Are you watching your gluten? Are you keeping track of your carbs? No—that has sugar in it!" If diet culture had a voice, that would be its script. Recently though, diet culture has been shifting its message. And that's a good thing! But with years of instilling a hypersensitive mindset to diet, the harmful effects have already taken their toll on most people. This resulted in a generation of people that love to hijack their body's natural functions on health—especially women, like parents who don't trust their kids with homework. This can be easily observed from individuals crazy with supplements, laxatives, and those with the strong urge to burn everything that they eat right away. It's like dumbing the body down. Unfortunately, today, the kind of mindset that opens doors to many eating disorders is what's normal. Hear Kate Noel explain how eating disorders weaken our digestion in this episode of Full and Thriving: An Eating Disorder Recovery Podcast! About Kate Noel: Kate Noel loves yoga. In today's episode of Full and Thriving: An Eating Disorder Recovery Podcast, Christyna Johnson MS, RDN, LDN, joins us to discuss detaching morality from food. Here, Christyna touches on her story of becoming a dietitian, what moralization of food is about, food neutralization, and the steps you can now take to detach from your own moralization of food. What is Christyna Johnson's favorite mantra on food neutralization? Find out in this episode of Full and Thriving: An Eating Disorder Recovery Podcast! A Check-up on How We View Food Why is it essential to assess how we view the food we eat? Aside from its effect on us, we should also be aware of how it affects our view of others in their relationship with food. Often, people's beliefs toward food don't remain personal, as Christyna has observed. One tendency is to put labels on the food we eat and then use that label to measure ourselves and other individuals. In this sense, food has become a criterion. Which is far from its role. Christyna and Meg discuss why this element of diet culture is so problematic. Today, diet culture expects everyone to have the same access, income, and time when choosing what to consume. If you raise that idea quickly, it's easy to disagree. But, if equalizing every person's access, buying power, and disposable time to food is far from what's possible in our reality, would it make sense to moralize everything that we eat? Find out how Christyna Johnson further unfolds the topic of moralizing food in this episode of Full and Thriving: An Eating Disorder Recovery Podcast! About Christyna Johnson MS, RDN, LDN: Christyna is a Christian who loves chai tea lattes, reading, and research. Her nutrition philosophy is rooted in the social justice framework of Health at Every Size (R) and seen through the lens of Intuitive Eating. Christyna Johnson MS, RDN, LD helps people find a peaceful and sustainable relationship with food and their body. Outline of the Episode: [02:20] Christyna Johnson – on becoming a dietitian [04:09] A story I cannot make up… [10:00] The Moralization of Food: Can food be good or bad? [12:57] How labeling the food we eat reflect back to us [14:46] Part of our autonomy is the right to choose what we want to eat. [16:32] Is it ok to eat frozen, canned, and pre-cooked food? [20:28] Your view on food may not be as liberating to others as much as it is to you [23:11] How do we neutralize food? [25:56] Christyna and Meg – on the fear people have regarding the responsibility towards diet [27:33] How can one start detaching from the moralization of food? Heather Knight is currently serving as the founder and chair of Surviving to Thriving, an Atlanta-based non-profit that provides a long-term sustainability program for victims of domestic violence. The passion for domestic violence awareness and prevention started from her personal situation in her teen years and then grew into a career in law enforcement. Heather recently left the police department after founding Surviving to Thriving in order to dedicate more time to her podcast (also Surviving to Thriving) and to teach the headlining program of R.A.D. Women's Self-Defense. On this episode: Heather shares her own experiences in her teenage years and the reason why she founded Surviving to Thriving. Heather shares how her husband, Zack, was fueled by his biological father to be a police officer.  Learn why people in an abusive relationship are afraid that they won't thrive outside the relationship.  Heather shares how she coped after being in a manipulative relationship. Joseph shares why therapy shouldn't be seen as a bad thing.  Learn the difference between being victimized and having the victim mentality.  Understand what fear of the unknown means and what visualization can look like.  Heather shares her own challenges when helping other people. Learn how you can start seeking help.    Key Takeaways: You need to have a purpose behind your business or a reason why you're doing what you're doing. We need to teach teenagers how to be in a healthy relationship. You need to deal with your own trauma or you're not going to help people in a way that you want to help them.  We have different ways of coping and we just need to find those coping mechanisms that work for us. To get from a place of surviving to a place of thriving, you need to have the tools you need to cope. Tweetable Quotes: Things happen in life, mistakes are made but it makes you who you are at the end of the day.  You don't have to live your whole life being a victim of your circumstances. Just because you're a woman does not mean you can't protect yourself. You can be the person that saves your life. You don't know if you don't like the unknown. Faith is the hope of seeing things we can't see.  We “fake it so we can make it,” but the “fake it” is something we never really dealt with.  Wounds covered up don't heal the right way.  Connect with Heather Knight: https://www.instagram.com/hlknight147 (Instagram) https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/surviving-to-thriving/id1493568293 (Surviving to Thriving Podcast) https://tothriving.org/ (Surviving to Thriving Website) Connect with Joseph James: https://www.facebook.com/meetjjames (Facebook Page) https://www.facebook.com/groups/252908273026721 (Facebook Group) https://www.instagram.com/meetjosephjames/ (Instagram)

Interview w/Chris J of the legendary Barclays Season 1 Episode 3 Producers/Hosts: Adriene Hobdy Brandon Bougard Editor: Gabriel Birkby The Bar-Kays were formed in Memphis, TN, in 1966, growing out of a local group dubbed the Imperials. Modeled on classic Memphis soul instrumental outfits like the Mar-Keys and Booker T. & the MG's, the Bar-Kays originally included guitarist Jimmy King (not the famed bluesman), trumpeter Ben Cauley, organist Ronnie Caldwell, saxophonist Phalon Jones, bassist James Alexander, and drummer Carl Cunningham. Adopting a mutated version of their favorite brand of rum (Bacardi) as their name, the band started playing heavily around Memphis, and eventually caught the attention of Stax/Volt, which signed the sextet in early 1967. With help from house drummer Al Jackson, Jr., the label began grooming the Bar-Kays as a second studio backing group that would spell Booker T. & the MG's on occasion. That spring, the Bar-Kays cut their first single, "Soul Finger," a playful, party-hearty instrumental punctuated by a group of neighborhood children shouting the title. "Soul Finger" reached the pop Top 20 and went all the way to number three on the R&B chart, establishing the Bar-Kays in the public eye (although the follow-up, "Give Everybody Some," barely scraped the R&B Top 40). Producer Allen Jones began to take an interest in the group and became their manager and mentor; even better, Otis Redding chose them as his regular backing band that summer.  Support the show (https://linktr.ee/exposuremagazine)

Are you living this one? This lie we tell ourselves, when I get caught up I'm gonna _________. Then fill in the blank with that thing you really want to do, the thing you can't stop thinking about. It's all a lie because you're never getting caught up. Ever. So now what? Are you just going to let that dream of yours die until you get your inbox to zero? Or after you prep for the quarterly meeting. By the way, the quarterly meeting happens again …. in 3 months. The continuous cycle of demands and busy that may be drowning your dreams and your spirit. Lindsey Hein from I'll Have Another podcast on the current episode of The Badass Womens Council podcast shares her story. With 4 boys under the age of 6, Lindsey could have easily lived that lie and most would have considered it a legitimate excuse not to live her dreams. Yet she researches and finds top name guests, interviews those guests, and publishes an episode every week while supporting a highly engaged audience and speaking appearances. Let this inspire you, you can do it too! LINDSEY SHARES THESE TIPS. Announce It, Then Figure it Out – There's accountability in sharing your dream. Start Messy – The need to be “right” or perfect stops too many talented badasses from bringing their gifts to the world. Listen to Your Inner Badass – The thing you can't stop thinking about is probably the gift and dream that God planted in you from your beginning, stop shushing it. Baby Steps are Still Steps – You don't need to quit everything and go to school to learn every detail. Sit down at home in your PJ's and craft a plan, then start searching for information to take one step. Repeat. Your Story and your Struggle Inspires Others – By sharing her fears and the discovery of testing positive for the BRCA2 gene mutation, Lindsey landed a spot on the cover of Women's Running Magazine from nearly 2000 applicants. That courageous act has opened doors and helped her inspire and engage her audience. You CAN Change – Lindsey knows that she's prone to fear. By knowing that about herself she can mindfully recognize and intentionally shift those tendencies to more positive outcomes. Listen to this episode and be inspired to live a messy imperfect life while taking baby steps to your dream. Then jump over to listen to Lindsey's podcast, I'll Have Another. Don't miss the Instagram stories of the real life of Lindsey Hein and her messy and beautiful crew!
