History was recently made in Congress. For the first time, a member addressed colleagues on the floor – using Artificial Intelligence. From July 25, 2024, here's Democrat from Virginia – Jennifer Wexton: I hope I can be a voice, even an AI voice, for Americans facing accessibility challenges and other disabilities because, too often, people only see us for that disability. In truth, we are so much more. Mr. Speaker, I ask my colleagues to join me in recognizing this Disability Pride Month and in celebrating the strength and perseverance of the disability community. Why did Congresswoman Wexton need Artificial Intelligence to speak? How did AI pull it off? And what was did she sound like before AI cloned her voice? This week, Rachel and Chris interview the superstar members of the “Stepping Into AAC” project - Carole Zangari, Tabi Jones-Wohleber, Rachel Langley, and Michaela Ball! The “Stepping Into AAC” team shares about the core mission of the project: to introduce people to AAC, to guide them through the early months of using these new communication tools and strategies, and to offer resources to engage school teams and other caregivers. The program is divided into 20 parts with the intention to complete one part a week, making it more manageable! Before the interview, Chris and Rachel share about their experience over the summer meeting up in Virginia! Chris also shares about Jennifer Wexton, a congresswoman with progressive supranuclear palsy who recently became the first person to use AAC on the floor of the House of Representatives! Key Ideas This Episode: Family-Centered AAC Education and Support: The “Stepping Into AAC" project focuses on helping families understand and implement AAC through accessible training materials. These materials include videos, hands-on activities, and newsletters designed to empower families of individuals with Angelman syndrome and other AAC users by offering practical tools for communication development. Habit Formation as Key to AAC Success: The “Stepping Into AAC” project emphasizes the importance of habit formation for long-term success with AAC. By breaking AAC learning into manageable steps and activities spread over 100 days, the program encourages families to develop habits that integrate AAC into daily life, making it more natural and sustainable over time. Building Community Around AAC: The project recognizes the need for community, not just around the individual AAC learner but also for families. This includes support from other families on the AAC journey, professionals, and local communities, creating a sense of shared experience and providing much-needed encouragement and credibility to families advocating for their loved ones. Virginia GOP Chairman Rich Anderson joined WMAL's "O'Connor and Company" radio program on Monday to discuss this weekend's primaries in Virginia. https://twitter.com/VA_GOP VA-10 PRIMARY: Northern Virginia Republicans chose retired Navy captain and political newcomer Hung Cao to face Democratic Rep. Jennifer Wexton in the race for the 10th District. Cao, a 25-year Navy veteran and first-time candidate, defeated the best-funded candidate with an eight-year record of public service, Prince William County Supervisor Jeanine Lawson (R-Brentsville). Lawson raised over $920,000 — more than twice what Cao pulled in — and had backing from Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), the House Republican Conference chairwoman. VA-8 PRIMARY: Republicans in the 8th District selected Karina Lipsman as their nominee at a GOP convention as well, though Republicans do not typically fare well in the deep-blue Northern Virginia district. Incumbent Rep. Don Beyer Jr. and Victoria Virasingh are running in the Democratic primary for U.S. House Virginia District 8 on June 21, 2022. VA-5 PRIMARY: Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) survived a primary challenge at a GOP nominating convention in Virginia's 5th Congressional District on Saturday, coasting to victory with an overwhelming margin of the vote. Good, one of the most conservative members of the House, faced a challenge from retired Air Force colonel Dan Moy, the chairman of the Charlottesville GOP Committee, who had accused Good of being “missing in action” on issues of national defense and the local economy. But Moy's argument swayed few, as Good enjoyed broad support from fellow Trump loyalists and religious conservatives in the reliably red district. In today's Federal Newscast, Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) introduces new legislation requiring federal regulators to encourage financial institutions to work with consumers and other business impacted by a shutdown.
After the longest government shutdown in American history finally ended last week, freshman Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) wants to make sure that it never happens again. Wexton joins the pod to chat with Ed and Daniella about why she forced a vote this week on a resolution stating that “shutdowns are detrimental to the nation and should not occur,” and about what she thought of some of the backlash the vote received. She also fills us in on what it’s been like navigating the halls of Congress as a freshman member during one of the most contentious periods that the Trump administration—and the country—has endured. Also, she really loves "The Wire."
Now that Jennifer Wexton is going to Congress, the race is on to see who will take her seat in the state senate; a fifth person joins the race for an empty School Board seat.
A day late and a Euro short, here we are with our first-ever trans-Atlantic #Nope, recorded in Duck, North Carolina and Lisbon, Portugal. In a week that was reminiscent of a Hieronymus Bosch etching, we vomit over the White House’s decision to release a doctored propaganda video from Infowars to back up the lie that CNN’s Jim Acosta assaulted an intern (he didn’t). We also question the wisdom of Nevada’s selection of a Republican corpse for their state assembly. Rachel reports live from Web Summit, describing the imminent disruption of the popcorn-industrial-complex. Also on the docket: a five-year-old’s 15-page resume sends China into a social media panic; raccoon and mixed-animal cafes sprout up in Korea; the U.S. Embassy throws an Australian cat pajama party to improve relations; and a New Jersey therapist winds up in jail after hiring an ex-con patient to disfigure a foe “so he can’t do push-ups” (her words, not ours.) Tuesday’s results were set to transform the House, not only in partisan makeup but also in gender, age and ethnicity. Ilhan Omar in Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib in Michigan will become the first Muslim women in the House. Sharice Davids in Kansas and Deb Haaland in New Mexico will become the first Native American women in the chamber. And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 29-year-old from New York, became the youngest woman elected to Congress. They were part of a wave of female candidates on the Democratic side, including Jennifer Wexton, who easily unseated Rep. Barbara Comstock (R) in a closely watched race in Northern Virginia, and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, who narrowly defeated Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R) in South Florida.Washington Post
