In this episode, Steve Bezner wrestles deeply with how to faithfully follow Jesus in the 21st century American context, and shares some profound insights about the kingdom of God and how it contrasts with the dominant cultural forces in our country. We discuss the powerful cultural influences that can push us away from living out true kingdom values, as well as practical ways that churches and individual believers can embrace a more holistic, biblical vision for life in the reign of God. It's a conversation that has the potential to challenge and reshape our understanding of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus in today's culture. Steve Bezner has been the Senior Pastor of Houston Northwest Church since January 2013. His passion is to see Houston—and the world—become more like Heaven as people become more like Jesus.Steve loves to preach, teach, write, and speak about the Bible in a way that is easy to understand but also challenges people to live the life that God has designed for each of them. In Houston, Steve works to foster collaboration between local churches, serving on the board of the Houston Church Planting Network (to start new churches locally) and Houston Pastors United We Stand (to foster racial reconciliation). He also works through GlocalNet to build bridges with other faiths in the city, particularly Jews and Muslims.Steve is passionate about training other pastors. He works with World Hope Ministries International to train pastors in remote global locations, coaches planters and pastors, and teaches seminary occasionally. He is married to Joy and has two sons—Ben and Andrew. The NeoLiberal Round
Are Bail Reform Laws Causing Violent Crime to Go Up or Down? Feat Ken W. Good with Renaldo Mckenzie

The NeoLiberal Round

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 25, 2024 43:27

DESCRIPTION: Attorney Ken W Good joins the show to discuss bail reform and its efficacy given the conflicting data surrounding Bail Reform and whether it is effective in minimizing recidivism and reducing crime. Some studies show that Bail Reform is effective while others suggest the opposite. Ken has been on several mainstream and independent news shows such as Fox, MSNBC, and several podcasts talking about bail reform and has his podcast exploring bail reform. Today we go toe-to-toe talking about bail reform and its efficacy. The Show was inspired by Elliott Chang of MediaVista Public Relations who helped to put the show together and provided the guest for today's show. Overview: Bail reform on violent crime in America. Some studies from advocates show that such crimes did not increase as a result of reform efforts, while other studies showed the opposite. Are any of the studies accurate? Bail reform remains a contentious subject, with significant implications for public safety and justice system equity. On the one hand, a study from California's Yolo County District Attorney's office reports alarming re-offense rates among defendants released on zero-bail, suggesting a direct link between bail reform and increased crime. According to this study, 70% of defendants released without bail reoffended, with a significant proportion committing violent crimes. Conversely, a study published May 22 by researchers at Drexel University, focusing on New Jersey's bail reform, finds no evidence that eliminating cash bail increases violence. New Jersey, one of the first states to significantly reform its bail system, has seen a reduction in pretrial detention without a corresponding rise in gun violence or other crimes. As bail reform continues to gain traction nationwide, understanding its true impact is crucial for policymakers, law enforcement, and the public. Misconceptions about bail reform could lead to misguided policies that either compromise public safety or perpetuate unnecessary incarceration. We will touch on the following points: -- The methodology and validity of the conflicting studies.-- Real-world implications of bail reform laws on public safety and recidivism.-- Comparative analysis of jurisdictions with varying bail policies.-- Policy recommendations to balance public safety with justice reform. Across the country, bail reform efforts have advanced swiftly, despite growing opposition from those concerned about public safety. The debate between advocates and opponents is intensifying, with each side firmly believing they are in the right. Meanwhile, the public is left questioning whether community safety is being compromised in a game of political maneuvering. About Ken W. We discuss these family engagement focused topics and more on this episode of Highest Aspirations featuring Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch and the work her team does through her Family Leadership Institute (FLI). Born and raised in a small, borderside barrio of Laredo, Texas, Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch conquered the challenges of poverty, discrimination and illiteracy. Raised without material wealth, Consuelo learned from her immigrant parents that their wealth was in culture, tradition, values, and faith. The values Consuelo learned as a child were reinforced throughout her career in the United States military. After graduating from Hardin Simmons University, Consuelo entered the U.S. Army as an officer and served for two decades. During that time, she broke barriers and set records when she became the highest-ranking Mexican-American woman in the Combat Support Field of the U.S. Army. When selected to assume a command post, Consuelo disrupted her advancement by deciding to retire. She chose instead to honor her mother's dying wish – for her to return to her roots and become a community leader. In 1996, Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch founded the human development company, Educational Achievement Services, Inc. She shares with us the root causes, symptoms, and some key strategies people can implement to feel less lonely and potentially prevent loneliness as well. She explains the difference between transient and chronic loneliness. There is also quite a bit of discussion around feeling your feelings, being able to name your emotions and how to shift them. At one point, she says that "what you resist persists" and this made so much sense! She discusses the benefits of meditation, therapy, nature, hobbies and journaling to help lift your spirits. Much of what is discusses also stems around being comfortable with yourself, knowing yourself and ultimately loving yourself. Another big moment is when she explains that emotions aren't mutually exclusive. You can experience joy, even in difficult times. You can be happy doing something, even if you're grieving. This episode is chalk full of helpful information from an expert on how to kick loneliness in the butt! More about Dr. Melissa Madeson: Melissa Madeson is a licensed therapist in Flower Mound, Texas. She has a PhD in Sport Exercise from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She also has an MEd in Counseling & Human Development from Hardin Simmons University and a BA in Psychology and MS in Kinesiology & Sport Performance from California State University, Sacramento. Melissa is Gottman level 1 and level 2 certified. More from Melissa: My Passion Is Helping People Deepen Their Most Meaningful Relationships. I pride myself on being compassionate, empathetic, and deeply caring. I am loyal, dedicated, hardworking, and driven. I have experienced the highs and lows of life like so many. I have personally struggled with depression and anxiety and have also lost a younger brother to a drug overdose. At the same time, my life has had its fair share of joys—I married my best friend and soulmate and have experienced the life-giving power of relationships time and again. All of these experiences inform the work I do with clients. Today, I have my own full-time psychotherapy practice and work with individuals, couples, and families. My Approach To The Healing Process: I take a holistic approach to mental health and relationship counseling. Sessions with me are so much more than just talk therapy—I use a bottom-up approach to help clients feel grounded and centered, get in touch with their body, and connect to themselves on a deeper level. Ken W. Good graduated from Hardin Simmons University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.  He received a Master of Education Degree in 1986 from Tarleton State University, a part of the Texas A&M System.  In 1989, he received his law degree from Texas Tech School of Law, where he was a member of the Texas Tech Law Review.  Mr. Good has argued cases before the Supreme Court of Texas and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, along with numerous courts of appeals, including the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.  He is the author of "Good's on Bail," a practice guide created for bail industry professionals.  In addition, he has written numerous articles on the subject of bail reform, including, “What Successful Bail Reform Looks Like.”  Mr. Good is married and has two daughters At the crossroads of this contentious issue are criminal justice reform advocates who contend that releasing individuals charged with a crime back into society for free, pending trial, not only promotes fairness, but also results in a decrease in crime rates. On the other side, law enforcement and victims' rights groups, alongside the bail industry, argue that releasing defendants without any accountability poses a serious threat to public safety. This polarized debate is capturing the attention of both policy-makers and the public, with both sides presenting compelling arguments and supporting studies to bolster their claims. What makes this debate particularly intriguing is the contention between the two sides regarding the interpretation of crime statistics. While criminal justice reform advocates argue that any increase in crime is a perceptual issue rather than a factual one, their opponents contend that the statistics and facts are inarguable.  The former contends that crime overall is going down across America, citing a big picture view.  Meanwhile, supporters of tougher laws are looking at specific jurisdictions where bail reform has been implemented.  They contend that violent crime specifically has increased dramatically in these regions. In a recent CNN story, the former Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism for the NYPD cited a survey conducted by the National Retail Federation of its members showed that 81 percent felt that retail crime had grown more violent from the previous year.  He also noted that retail giant Target had closed stores in New York City, Portland and Los Angeles -- all cities which had implemented some form of bail reform in recent years.Ken W. Good, a noted bail attorney and a board member of the Professional Bondsmen of Texas is available to be interviewed by you.  Good has worked closely with lawmakers and other individuals on bail matters.  He can offer his perspective on the impact that criminal justice and bail reform have had on public safety.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Robyn grew up in the piney woods of Longview, TX where they were born in the mid-70s, and then moved to San Antonio, TX for several years where they attended junior high and high school. Robyn was involved in Texas baptist churches during young adulthood and sensed a calling to be more involved in the work and life of the church, but because of the theology of the Southern Baptist Church, they were denied time and time again. In response to the exclusionary reaction they encountered, they began reading theology during this time and became mesmerized by all that they were reading. After suffering a brain aneurysm at the age of 16 the summer before their senior year in high school and surviving two full craniotomies as an emergency intervention, Robyn finished high school on time and headed off to college in West Texas on a music scholarship. After falling in love with the big questions of life and lofty ideas and never putting down theology books, Robyn gave up their music scholarship to study philosophy and theology, transferred to Hardin-Simmons University, and became a student at Logsdon School of Theology. There they found kindred spirits with two faculty members and began their journey to becoming a theologian and ethicist.   In This Episode 2:49 - What is supremacy culture and why does it need to be composted? 7:22 - Expanding language to express the full extent of supremacy culture 8:46 - Why do we need to compost supremacy culture as opposed to destroying it? 20:54 - Learning from nature on how to build equitable systems in society 30:25 - The true spirit of togetherness and nourishing relationships 36:28 - Activism through becoming embodied
