Commercial insurance is a billion-dollar industry—but behind the scenes, it's a mess. Agents are buried in outdated processes, struggling to keep up with client needs and fighting to prove their value in a system that just isn't built for efficiency. So, what if there was a better way? What if technology could finally give agents the tools they need to move beyond paperwork and actually reduce risk for their clients? In this episode of the Insurtech Leadership Podcast, host Joshua Hollander sits down with Lawson Condell, CEO and founder of Riskbly, to talk about how he's tackling these challenges head-on. Riskbly is a platform designed to modernize the fractured and siloed processes that have long plagued commercial insurance, giving agents real-time insights and better ways to manage risk. Lawson shares his journey from working at major corporations like Oracle and Thomson Reuters to launching a platform built specifically to empower commercial agents. They dive into what's broken in the industry, why white-label solutions are a game-changer, and how Riskbly is helping agents shift from simply selling policies to becoming true risk advisors. Plus, Lawson reflects on how his military background shaped his leadership style and what he sees as the future of commercial insurance in a tech-driven world. If you're ready to see how technology is rewriting the rules of commercial insurance, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Let's dive in! In This Episode: [00:40] Founding Riskbly – Lawson's motivation behind creating Riskbly for commercial agents. Notable Quotes [00:04:26] "I come in as the risk advising agent wanting to lower your total cost of risk. We go through a diagnosis, and I find these things. You agree on it, but in six months or a year, I come back, and you haven't done anything. It's a frustrating process." – Lawson Condell [00:14:10] "We are here to support the agent. We are here to make that agent that partners with us the very best. I promise to each agency, to each agent, I'm here to make you better. My team's here to make you better." – Lawson Condell [00:28:13] "I think if you try to stay as close to the client and your employees as you can, and I don't mean emotionally close, I mean in the trenches with them, helping them out, figuring out what motivates them, it makes a difference." – Lawson Condell Our Guest Lawson Condell, CEO and founder of Riskbly, a platform designed to empower commercial insurance agents with tools to manage risk, streamline operations, and deliver better value to their clients. During his lifetime, only about half of Shakespeare's plays were available in printed versions. That meant that there were several of Shakespeare's plays that weren't available in printed form at all while the bard was alive. So how do we know about those plays today if there weren't any written records? They survive through a book called the First Folio. There are at least 18 plays from Shakespeare's works that we only have today because of the printing of the First Folio that happened in 1623. If you have heard about the printing of the first Folio then you'll probably recognize the names Heminges and Condell, Shakespeare's friends and colleagues, who are often regarded as the authors of the First Folio. What the history shows us, however is that the making of First Folio was not done solely by two men, but instead was a collective work done by a large network of individuals that were friends, and fans of Shakespeare, as well as business men looking to capitalize on an opportunity. Our guest this week, Chris Laoutaris, has done in-depth investigative research into the history behind the making of the First Folio, that he shares in his latest book titled Shakespeare's Book, that's out now. We're delighted to have Chris here today to discuss his book and to reveal a fresh perspective and some new discoveries about the people and the history that gave us the First Folio. 2023 is the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's First Folio, and Chris Laoutaris, the author of Shakespeare's Book: The Story Behind the First Folio and the Making of Shakespeare, discusses his fascinating and readable account of the many people and factors that went into its creation. Chris shares how he became an expert in multiple disciplines just to write the human story behind what Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune called “one of the most crucial cultural acts in the history of Western civilization;” pushes back against the conventional wisdom that Heminges and Condell were the only ones responsible for the First Folio; whether The Winters' Tale is somehow a tribute to Anne Shakespeare; his use of extended tree metaphors; how putting together a Folio takes a village; the many and varied historical synchronicities; how Lauren Gunderson's The Book of Will (a fictional treatment of the same material) compares with what really happened; and how the First Folio is mostly responsible for the Shakespeare Industrial Complex we toil in today. Updated: 7:01 a.m. Markus Krueger wants to bust a myth about the history of Fargo-Moorhead. "There arose this myth about us that isn't true, that everybody here was white for so long, up until year X. And that wasn't true," said Krueger, programming director for the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County. "We had a thriving African American community for the first 50 years." "This was a part of local history that we hadn't delved into before. And it's about time,” he added. A new exhibit curated by the society focuses on the history of this long-overlooked group of early residents. Black communities and other BIPOC communities have a history in the area that hasn't been written down or documented well, said Gabby Clavo, communications manager for the Clay County Museum in Moorhead. “Collecting these stories is really important, so we can tell this story for future generations.” Courtesy North Dakota State University archives Frank Gordon quickly reopened his barbershop in a tent after a fire destroyed much of downtown Fargo in 1893. Some of the first non-Indigenous people to settle in Fargo-Moorhead were Black. Many were barbers attracted to new railroad boom towns in the late 1800s. "That profession happened to be what drew a lot of the first Black families to Fargo-Moorhead in that original generation,” said Krueger. "White men thought that it was the height of luxury to be able to get a shave and a haircut and get a bath drawn by an African American barber, by a tonsorial artist, they called them," said Krueger. Learning the stories of those early residents was a challenge. “For some people, we know almost nothing except for names,” said Krueger. “And then you find out about Julius Taylor, and Julius Taylor was a barber in Fargo in the 1880s. And then he left in 1889 to found the Broad Ax, which was Chicago's first African American newspaper, so we know a lot about him.” They learned some details by painstakingly tracing family histories. “We know that Frank Gordon was a barber who ran for (Fargo) city alderman in 1900. He didn't win, and he and his family eventually moved out to the West Coast. His grandson is actually world famous jazz saxophonist Dexter Gordon.” Much of was was learned about the early Black families came from The Appeal, an African American newspaper in St. Paul that tracked social happenings across the region including Fargo-Moorhead. "They describe in detail the parties that are held by the families they call “the elite”, and these tend to be the barber families," said Krueger. A notable resident discovered in the newspaper pages was Lottie Adams, the daughter of an 1880s barber family. She was a colorful figure and because only one photo of her could be found, the museum commissioned a Moorhead artist, born in Nigeria, to paint her portrait. "She's always organizing a party or there's a party being organized for her because she's visiting St. Paul or Grand Forks or Duluth,” said Krueger “She is one of the queens of the social scene in Fargo in the 1890s." Courtesy Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County The Horton Adams family in a photograph from the 1890s. Adams was one of several Black barbers who opened businesses in Fargo Moorhead in the late 1800s. The researchers found even getting an accurate count of early Black residents was difficult. The Black population of Fargo-Moorhead might have reached 200 by 1900, but Black families were often listed as white in census records. Clavo said decisions about identity were complicated, and obscuring their race might have been a necessary choice. "Because it could endanger their businesses, their safety,” she said. “And so we did see that researching some of the people in this exhibit. So safety was a big part in choosing what to identify as, and identifying as white was probably the safest option." By the 1930s most of those early families had left, lured away by economic opportunity and larger Black communities in the Twin Cities or Chicago, or perhaps driven away by the rise of a local Ku Klux Klan movement in the early 1900s, also documented in the exhibit. Krueger said Lottie Adams moved to the Rondo neighborhood in St. Paul, as did many other Black residents of Fargo-Moorhead. By 1965, when Yvonne Condell moved to Moorhead as a college professor with her husband, a psychologist and jazz musician, she recalls only one other Black resident. "I was fascinated by the fact that one could come to a town that was so unlike places we'd been before, Florida, Kentucky and Georgia,” she said in a recent interview. “So it was quite an experience to come to a town where you were persons two and three." The Condells taught at Minnesota State University-Moorhead, and they helped recruit students of color to the school. Yvonne Condell is an advisor to the Historical and Cultural Society on this exhibit, and she was struck by the history of Black barbers in the 1800s. Courtesy Rick Henderson Minnesota State University Moorhead Professor Emeritus Yvonne Condell served as an advisor to the Stories of Local Black History exhibit. Condell and her husband James, a psychologist and jazz musician, moved to Moorhead in 1965. Their story is part of the community's history. "For example, African American barbers could cut white men's hair. Okay, no problem. When the reverse came, when our students came, we had to find a way to get their hair cut because all the barbers at that time were white barbers who refused to cut black folks hair,” recalled Condell. The Black community remained small until the 1990s when immigrants from African countries began to resettle in Fargo-Moorhead. Krueger said the population has grown steadily in the past 20 years, and while the communities are still mostly white, according to the 2020 census, about 8 percent of residents in Cass County, (Fargo) and nearly 6 percent in Clay County (Moorhead) identify as African American/Black. The exhibit also discusses recent history, including the 2018 election of Johnathan Judd as Moorhead's first Black mayor. Judd is now a Minnesota district court judge, but he was mayor when George Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis, and in the aftermath, he challenged local residents to have difficult conversations about race. Moorhead's Judge Johnathan Judd: Welcoming tough conversations about race "We need to embrace the fact that we don't like having tough conversations that might cause us to think internally about how we view things, because we're not about expressing our vulnerability," he said in an MPR News interview in July of 2020. "During the protests, he said that our community has to start having conversations about these questions,” said Krueger, “I'm hoping that this exhibit can maybe be part of that conversation.” “Contributing to those uncomfortable conversations,” added Clavo, who expects the exhibit to make some residents uncomfortable. “But you know, to learn you have to get uncomfortable." Clavo wants this exhibit to spark conversations across the community, perhaps generating new stories about race and history the museum can collect, creating a more complete local history story for future generations.

Tommy Condell was named Offensive Coordinator of the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats May 13, 2019 after re-joining the team as Wide Receivers Coach January 16, 2019. He was elevated to Offensive Coordinator & Quarterbacks Coach February 6, 2020. In 2019, Condell oversaw an offence that posted league-leading rankings in numerous offensive categories despite losing starting quarterback and 2018 East Division Most Outstanding Player nominee Jeremiah Masoli in Week 7 to a season-ending injury. Second-year pro Dane Evans took over at quarterback for the remainder of the season and under Condell's guidance, the Tiger-Cats finished first in the CFL in offensive points for (508), offensive points per game (28.2), offensive touchdowns (50), net offence (7,125 yards), net offence per game (395.8 yards), second down conversion percentage (tie-50.5%), average yards per play (6.84), first downs (398), passing yards (5,639), passing yards per game (313.3), average gain per pass (9.0 yards) and 30+ yard pass gains (31). As a result, Condell's offence produced the CFL's 2019 Most Outstanding Player in wide receiver Brandon Banks who led the league in all major receiving categories, including receptions (112), yards (1,550) and touchdowns (13). Banks' 112 receptions also set a Tiger-Cats' single-season franchise record. In addition, Chris Van Zeyl was named the league's Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman and four offensive players were named 2019 CFL All-Stars, including Banks, Van Zeyl, wide receiver Bralon Addison and offensive guard Brandon Revenberg.

If the saying is true that you are the sum of your five closest friends, then one great way to get to know William Shakespeare is to take a look at the lives of his closest friends. John Heminges and Henry Condell helped form the foundation of the shareholder agreement Shakespeare made at The Globe and the Lord Chamberlain’s Men. They would remain loyal to Shakespeare from Elizabethan England into Jacobean England as the company became the King’s Men under James I. Acting in plays together, writing plays, surviving the Globe’s famous fire, and watching each other get married, have children, and grow old together is a stronger definition of friendship than many people ever get to experience, and by all historical accounts, Heminges and Condell were just such strong friends for William Shakespeare not just until his death in 1616, but through the publication of the 1623 First Folio, and continuing ever after. As our guest this week, we are delighted to have Paul Edmondson, the Head of Research at Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, and the author of one chapter about Heminges and Condell that appeared in the recent book he edited called The Shakespeare Circle. We welcome Paul today to discuss his chapter on Heminges and Condell and help us get to know Shakespeare’s extraordinary friends.

Does William Shakespeare belong in the theater and not the literature department? Nigel Wood is a Professor of Literature at Loughborough University, specializing in early modern literature and the staging of dramatic texts. He joins us today to discuss the evolution of Shakespeare's plays as a result of reading what was intended to be performed. I will be asking Nigel about the significance of stage directions in addition to the written dialogue, and what impact Condell and Heminges' publication of the First Folio might have had on the course of Shakespeare's enduring legacy thereafter. Are we doing Shakespeare a disservice to study his works as literature? You'll learn: >> Does Shakespeare belong in literature or are we mistakenly placing him there? >> What about original practice techniques? Does that help us get closer to real Shakespeare? >> Turns out early modern theaters had a playbill. Find out what it contained and how it was used >> How does the stage itself impact the performance? Are the stage directions we can read designed for a specific space? >> We talk Cymbeline, Titus Andronicus, Oedipus, and more!
In her new play The Book of Will, Lauren Gunderson imagines what Shakespeare's fellow actors John Heminges and Henry Condell had to accomplish to publish the First Folio, the first collection of Shakespeare's plays. In the Northlight Theatre production in Chicago, actors Jim Ortlieb (a veteran of Broadway, TV, and film) and Gregory Linington (whose stage, film, and TV credits across the country include 12 seasons at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland) play John and Henry and share insights into what it's like to create these roles. Featuring research, textual clues, King's Men actors defined by NBA analogies, the difference between real life and art, the anticipation of 19th century actor/managers, the trick of getting across information, and the absolute fundamental Disney-related difference between these two literary saviors. Shakespeare is famous today thanks in no small part to two members of his acting company, John Heminge and Henry Condell, who published a collection of his plays seven years after his death. Lauren Gunderson has written a new play called "The Book of Will" that portrays Heminge and Condell, along with their families and everyone involved in gathering and creating the First Folio. I don't have to tell you that a college degree is not worth as much today as it was decades ago. The price goes up and the value goes down. It doesn't sound like a great investment, does it? Throw in a non-existant job market for college grads with no-experience and it's hard to make a case for college. If you are a model student with career aspirations that require a college degree, then keep the blinders on and don't listen to this podcast. People go to college because they want a "leg up", a boost, a head-start against the competition for higher paying J-O-B's. There are even more ways to get that head-start today then ever. University is only one narrow path. This podcast launches a live, real-time series of podcast updates on how I create a 2 year curriculum designed to put the student years beyond what a 4 year university degree could provide - and at a fraction of the cost! jebmusic 2003 I honestly didn't think about the second meaning to the title of this song when I named it. I was messing around in the studio and was surprise at how well everything came together without effort for this semi- accidental recording. However, calling the song "Came Together" sounded dumb. Sometimes the best things are random accidents "coming together". Enjoy. PS - Thanks for tolerating the "dump" of older instrumental music while I work on the lyrics for the next song in my upcoming Rock Opera.
Walked in my son’s room and what did I see He’s making school posters saying, “Vote for Me” Shoulda seen it comin I guess I shoulda known But I really didn’t expect it from one of my own Started last year he joined the student council Didn’t suspect a thing - I just thought he was ill There he was studying; staying after school Student Body President; definitely not cool I said “son we are hippies” let live and let live We are not the taker’s, we are the ones who give Spread peace and harmony wherever you go Tap into the universe and go with the flow He said “Awe Dad, I won’t get rich doing that” I’ll start a foundation when my wallet is fat I just couldn’t take it, I pulled out some herb Said “let’s smoke a fatty before I get perturbed” Be like your brother, he is high as a kite You don’t see him grabbing for power and might He said “Dad peace and love are overrated I wanna live in a neighborhood that is gated I want a limousine that will drive me into work Where I will get a big fat bonus” he said with a smirk. “Say it’s not true, you must be joking” I pulled out my bong and started chain smoking I couldn’t take it any longer, I started to swoon He’s addicted to power, another Wall street tycoon Like that’s what we need Another Hedge Fund Manager gettin high on greed My own DNA has become a demon seed Plundering the earth to fill his endless needs Don’t go down this path, it leads to death and destruction He said, “Not for me, that’s not my dysfunction I’m headed for Goldman Sachs where I will do God’s work I thought “you fuckin bastard”; really , what a jerk. Final cut studio version of my most popular song about the evolution of getting high. Enjoy! Getting High Isaac Newton ate a mushroom, sitting under an apple tree And when an apple fell, he discovered gravity He was getting high - seeing mathematics in the sky Everyone around the world, oh me oh my they are getting high Socrates drank some herbal tea, felt a tingle in his mind And created a whole new philosophy, on just the question “why” Getting high, opening up his Mind’s Eye Everyone around the world, oh me oh my they are getting high Galileo smoked a funny plant, looked up to the stars to see That it was the Sun and not the Earth at the center of the galaxy They said you must be crazy, Galileo you must be high The Pope had him tied to the stake, so they could watch him fry Getting high, opening up his Mind’s Eye Everyone around the world, oh me oh my they are getting high Now look at Jimmy Buffet, He’s livin on Palm Beach, Writing Music, Books, and Movies – all started with a little spleef Remember in San Francisco, there was an explosion of LSD 10 years later those tripped-out geeks would make Silicon Valley Getting high, opening up the Mind’s Eye Everyone around the world, oh me oh my they are getting high John D Rockefeller saw oil shoot in the sky, He said, “With this, I’ll rule the world – I’ll be so god damn high” “There will be no competition from alcohol or hemp seed” “Prohibition, Reefer Madness, I’ll stamp out all those weeds” Getting high, a “High and Mighty” kinda high, Getting drunk on Absolute – Power, a “Rule the World” kinda high The CIA looked at cocoa leaves, and said, “This won’t do the trick” “We need something much more toxic, that’ll make the people sick” Let’s make it concentrated, we’ll get the people hooked They will never know what hit em, because their minds they will be cooked Getting high, a “High and Mighty” kinda high Getting drunk on Absolute – Power, a “Rule the World” kinda high The Ruling class had a meeting, said you know we gotta stop Those people from opening up their minds, or our bubble is gonna pop We’ll make all those plants illegal and throw the people in the clink And fill their minds with nonsense, so that they can’t even think Getting high, a “High and Mighty” kinda high, Getting drunk on Absolute – Power, a “Rule the World” kinda high Surveillance camera’s everywhere, an eye up in the sky We will rule the world with an iron fist, and show those fuckers who’s high. We will scratch each other’s backs, because, you know, we are the best We’ll punish all our enemies, and we’ll wipe out all the rest Getting high, a “High and Mighty” kinda high, Getting drunk on Absolute – Power, a “Rule the World” kinda high

The lyrics just flew off my pen in a stream of consciousness for this song. I plan a more refined studio version plus youtube video, but wanted to release this live version just to get it out there. We will scratch each other’s backs, because, you know, we are the best We’ll punish all our enemies, and we’ll wipe out all the rest Getting high, a “High and Mighty” kinda high, Getting drunk on Absolute – Power, a “Rule the World” kinda high Quote from comedian Bill Hicks It’s a choice right now between fear and love The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your door, by guns, and close yourself off. The eyes of love, instead, see all of us as one. Here’s what we can do to change the world right now… Take all that money we spend on weapons and defense each year and, instead, spend it feeding, clothing, and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over – not one human being excluded. And we can explore space together – both inner and outer – forever in peace.
Are you superior or inferior? In what way? By what standard? Do you belong to the right club, have the perfect homes, and know the right people? More importantly, do you know who to exclude? If you do, you won't want to listen to this... Resources: Gnostic Media: Podcast #68 Another Brick in the Wall, part 1 An Interview with John Taylor Gatto http://gnosticmedia.podomatic.com/
