The Cicle Classic is England's answer to the spring classics. Paris-Roubaix is the Hell of the North so perhaps this ought to be known as the Beast in the East. The race celebrates its 20th anniversary this month, with the 2025 edition taking place on Sunday, April 27. Held in the East Midlands, the race criss-crosses the countryside, taking in rough, rutted farm tracks. If it was created today it would be considered a gravel race. The Tour of Flanders has the Koppenberg, Gent-Wevelgem has the Kemmelberg, Paris-Roubaix has the Arenberg – the Cicle Classic has Somerberg. Lionel Birnie explores the history and character of the UK's highest-ranked one-day race and hears from the founder Colin Clews who had the idea, Matt Stephens, who was third in the first edition two decades ago, Conor Dunne, who won in 2016 and James McCallum, who was on the podium in arguably the most dramatic and certainly the muddiest edition in 2012. Belgian coach Kristof de Kegel has been at the forefront of professional cycling for over a decade. Now a key member of Alpecin–Deceuninck's management team, he is involved in decision-making processes that shape the form and season direction of the likes of Mathieu van der Poel and Jasper Philipsen. Our very own presenter, Conor Dunne, was actually coached by him once upon a time too! In this video, Conor catches up with Kristof for a full discussion on training principles, philosophies and what it takes to win in pro cycling in 2025.

To coincide with the general release of Cycling Podcast Productions' first film, And So We Rode, we are releasing the original audio diary by Conor Dunne and Larry Warbasse which inspired it. In 2018, The Cycling Podcast asked Conor to keep a diary at the Tour of Britain, which he and Larry were due to ride for the Aqua Blue Sport team. But shortly before the race, the team folded. It didn't just announce it would be stopping at the end of the season, it ground to an immediate halt leaving the riders without any races to ride and a fight to salvage their careers. Instead of feeling sorry for themselves, Conor and Larry decided to do something that had long been in the back of their minds. They decided to go on a bikepacking adventure in the French and Italian Alps, setting off from their homes in Nice. We produced their audio diary for Friends of the Podcast and then began work on a film created using footage filmed on a Go Pro and their phones. Having been released initially for Friends of the Podcast to watch free, And So We Rode is now available to buy or rent for the first time on Vimeo (https://vimeo.com/ondemand/andsowerode/415893408) . In this episode of The Cycling Podcast, Richard Moore and Lionel Birnie are joined by the film's director Orla Chennaoui to discuss the week's cycling news and the making of the film before we pick up Conor and Larry's adventure as they are about to get on the road. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe return for the first time since the conclusion of Our Giro. A couple of months ago we reviewed the Netflix documentary about the Movistar team, The Least Expected Day. Grab the popcorn because in this episode, we discuss the new ESPN 30 for 30 film directed by Marina Zenovich, Lance. Is this another step on the path to redemption for Lance Armstrong? Or is it an attempt by him to cast his doping in a more favourable light? Everyone is familiar with the story of Armstrong's doping and the seven Tour de France titles he was stripped of after his confession to Oprah. So is there anything new to learn from the film? We also speak to Zenovich herself about making the film and hear from Bob Hamman, owner of a company called SCA Promotions which played a key role in the rise and fall of Armstrong. Our Giro reaches Milan after three weeks on the virtual road. We set out from Budapest in Hungary, then spent a few days in Sicily before making the familiar journey the length of Italy, visiting the Dolomites and the Alps and now it's the last leg. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe look back to the 2017 Giro, won by Tom Dumoulin, who famously had to stop to answer the call of nature by the roadside on the stage to Bormio. We speak to Dumoulin about that day and his Giro victory in general. There's also the final member of Ciro Scognamiglio's Giro Dream Team, the last visit to the kitchen for Lionel and finally we remember some of our favourite memories from the four editions of the Giro The Cycling Podcast has covered from start to finish. Thank you to everyone who has joined us on the journey – we hope you've enjoyed listening to Our Giro as much as we have making it. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. Is stage 20 of Our Giro the 'queen stage'? Well, that's a matter of debate but we have got a bumper episode looking back to the final Friday of the 2018 edition when Chris Froome turned the race on its head. Simon Yates had looked so good for two and a half weeks, winning stages in pink and with panache. Froome had endured crashes and stuttering form in the first half of the race and his victory on Monte Zoncalon over the penultimate weekend looked at the time to be like a consolation prize. As the race reached its decisive final mountain stages, Froome decided to go all in and launched a long-range attack that put not just Yates but all the other general classification contenders on the back foot. Yates cracked definitively, Froome ended the day in pink but as we'll hear in this episode there was much more to it than that. Froome, Yates, Dave Brailsford, Tom Dumoulin, Matt White and Yates's teammate Chris Juul Jensen are among those who reflect on that remarkable day. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. COMING TOMORROW The final stage of Our Giro takes us to Milan but it will be far from processional. We'll look back to Tom Dumoulin's overall victory in 2017 and reflect on our favourite Giro memories. OUR NEW CLOTHING RANGE We have teamed up with Katusha to produce The Cycling Podcast Collection. This episode of Our Giro looks at the relationship between the Giro d'Italia and the literary tradition of journalists, writers and poets covering the race. We look at the 1949 Giro and the continuing rivalry between Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali through the pages of a collection of writing by novellist and poet Dino Buzzati. Daniel speaks to Filippo Cauz and Leonardo Piccione, two young writers who are seeking to capture the poetry and emotion of the Giro in their collection of writing, Bidon. We also revisit the work of Gianni Mura and some of the other great writers who have added a literary flourish to their coverage of the race. Stage 18 of Our Giro reunites us with Brian Nygaard, who stood in for Lionel during his brief trip home from the race to watch his football team get walloped in the FA Cup final. Continuing the Giro's recent tradition, this episode is our 'wine stage' featuring Daniel's conversation with Nygaard, whose career in cycling has taken him from press officer to team manager to journalist. The Dane has worked as press officer for Bjarne Riis's CSC team, Team Sky and Orica-GreenEdge, was part of the management at Leopard-Trek and recently has written and commentated on cycling. Other than cycling, Nygaard's passions are Italy, food and wine. He now runs a wine-making business in California. Pour yourself a glass of something nice and sit back for a conversation about the joys of Italy. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. COMING TOMORROW The literary Giro. In this episode of Our Giro, we meet Trek-Segafredo general manager Luca Guercilena and learn about his career in professional cycling. Guercilena was not a pro rider but a sports scientist, whose career began with the Mapei team – where he tested a certain Daniel Friebe and, according to some observers, failed to spot the talent in front of his eyes(!) Later on, he was part of the Leopard-Trek team which has evolved through several identities to become the Trek-Segafredo team today. In this episode, Guercilena talks about some of the riders he has worked with over the years. We also hear from Ciro Scognamiglio, whose Giro Dream Team is nearing completion, and Lionel makes the Lombardy favourite, polenta with sausage ragù. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. COMING TOMORROW From press officer to team manager to journalist, we meet the Dane Brian Nygaard, who has moved to California to run a vineyard and wine production business. We talk about his love of cycling and Italy, how one waned briefly but the other definitely did not. In this episode of Our Giro we hear from 1988 Giro d'Italia champion Andy Hampsten, the only American to win the race. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe look back at the 1988 Giro which was shaped by terrible whether on the stage to Bormio, which went over the Gavia. Snowy conditions made for a cold, miserable day in the saddle for the riders but there was no question as far as the riders were concerned that such a prestigious stage would go ahead. It would never happen today but it has gone down in Giro history as one of the most incredible stages of any grand tour. Hampsten was not first to the top of the Gavia that day (that was Dutchman Johan Van de Velde); and he did not win the stage either (that was another Dutchman, Erik Breukink) but the American did take the pink jersey from Franco Chioccioli (who lost more than five minutes) to take control of the Giro. Over to Hampsten, who usually lives for part of the year in Tuscany, to tell the story... The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. Andy Hampsten is the only American to win the Giro d'Italia but in the first of two episodes with him we look at the 1985 race when he switched mid-season from a small domestic team in the US to the 7-Eleven squad that had been invited to ride the race. Two days from the end, Hampsten won a stage at Gran Paradiso – a short, explosive road race – which earned him a contract for 1986 with the La Vie Claire team of Bernard Hinault and Greg LeMond. Continuing the American theme, we also hear from Robin Morton, who was the first woman to work as a team manager and follow the Giro in a team car, when the Linea-Gianni Motta team rode the race in 1984. The predominantly American squad had the 1966 Giro winner Motta as their lead sports director. Morton talks to Orla Chennaoui about her experiences working at the Giro. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. LINK If you want to see Hampsten's attack, as mentioned by Richard in this episode, the original RAI footage is on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cAgF0T9GiA) . COMING TOMORROW Our interview with Andy Hampsten continues as we look at the 1988 Giro d'Italia, which he won, and focus on the stage that went over the Gavia in the snow. Every year, the Giro d'Italia shows off the best countryside Italy has to offer. It's not to say that France and Spain are not blessed with great scenery but Italy seems to provide the most consistently beautiful backdrop for the racing. The Giro's slogan – the toughest race in the most beautiful place – might have a touch of hype but it's probably fair to say it is the most photogenic of the three grand tours. In this episode of Our Giro, Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe look at the visual aspect of the Giro. We meet legendary photographer Graham Watson, who witnessed the drama of the Giro more more than three decades before retiring to New Zealand. Graham explains why the Giro was his favourite race to photograph and watch and looks back at some of the most memorable moments – from the duel between Stephen Roche and Roberto Visentini in 1987, to Marco Pantani's brilliance in 1998 and downfall in 99, to Alberto Contador coming straight from the beach to win a decade later. We also talk Italy's sense of style on and off the bike with Sir Paul Smith, who designed the maglia rosa in 2013, and Andy Storey, who runs through some of the most memorable Italian jerseys. Plus author and cultural historian Kassia St Clair talks about the power and charm of the colour pink. There's also the latest rider added to Ciro Scognamiglio's increasingly eclectic Giro Dream Team and François Thomazeau plays us out with La Vie En Rose. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. LINKS You can check out some of Graham Watson's finest photographs on his website (https://www.grahamwatson.com/) . You can also buy his books, prints and posters. Andy Storey's book on the history of cycling jerseys is called The Art of the Jersey. You can buy some great retro remakes at prendas.co.uk (https://www.prendas.co.uk/) Kassia St Clair's book is called The Secret Lives of Colour. COMING TOMORROW We meet the only American to win the Giro, Andy Hampsten. This is the first of a two-part interview with the 1988 champion. In part one, we talk about his breakthrough stage win during the 1985 race. COPPA ITALIA OF CYCLING JERSEYS What is the best-looking Italian cycling jersey of all-time? You decide. In this episode we look at the art and psychology of descending the big mountains. As Our Giro approaches the big mountain stages, Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe we talk about some editions of the Giro d'Italia that have been decided going down hill. We hear from American rider Christian Vande Velde, who suffered a bad crash on a descent early on in the 2009 Giro d'Italia. Vande Velde struggled with the mental aspect of descending in races and Daniel speaks to him about how he worked to conquer those fears. We also speak to Steven Kruijswijk, the Dutchman who arguably could have won the Giro but for crashing into a snow wall on a descent in the 2016 Giro. There's also a reminder of the Tiramisù World Cup and Lionel's efforts at making the coffee-infused dessert are judged by Felicity Cloake. There's also controversy from the turbo trainer in Our Giro. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. FURTHER READING The Outside magazine article about downhill skiing by Jennifer Kahn that Daniel mentioned is here (https://www.outsideonline.com/1908781/scott-macartneys-comeback) . We also hear from Sir Paul Smith, who designed the maglia rosa in 2013, and Andy Storey, author of the Art of the Jersey, about Italian style on the bike, plus we learn about the colour pink. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe look back at Paris-Nice, the last World Tour stage race before coronavirus brought the world to a halt. In stage 13 of Our Giro we hear from Max Schachmann of Bora-Hansgrohe who was in sparkling form this spring, finishing second at the Volta ao Algarve before winning Paris-Nice, which made its way to the French Riviera as Europe was on the verge of lockdown. The race continued in surreal circumstances, as Daniel describes in this episode, and was curtailed a day short. Schachmann – who won a stage of the 2018 Giro at Prato Nevoso the day before Chris Froome attacked and cracked Simon Yates – talks about Paris-Nice, how he hoped to capitalise on his excellent spring form and what the future holds when racing returns. We also hear from Andrea Agostini, chief operating officer of UAE Team Emirates, who was in the UAE as the virus began to spread among riders and people working on the race. Agostini was hospitalised in the UAE before recovering enough to return home. This episode also reveals the next member of Ciro Scognamiglio’s Giro Dream Team, and there’ll be few surprises about who he has chosen as team leader. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. Stage 12 of Our Giro picks up the Max Sciandri story at the point where he decided to switch nationalities and swap his Italian racing licence for a British one. Sciandri also recalls riding the 2000 Giro d'Italia for the vegetarian Linda McCartney Foods team and we hear from the team's press officer John Deering about a remarkable stage win for David McKenzie. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe remember that 2000 race and Marco Pantani's comeback after being kicked out of the previous year's Giro while just a couple of days from clinching victory. As we are in Cesenatico, Pantani's home town, we look back 12 months to the day Daniel and Lionel dropped in on the family-owned piadineria and Lionel's attempt to make the traditional Italian flatbread sandwiches is scrutinised by food writer Felicity Cloake. There's also wine of the day and another appropriate song to play us out from François Thomazeau. The full, unedited Max Sciandri interview will be available for Friends of the Podcast in a couple of days. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. Join Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe as Our Giro reaches Tuscany. We interview Max Sciandri about his journey from Derby to the Tuscan hills via Los Angeles. Sciandri was one of the Movistar sports directors who helped guide Richard Carapaz to victory in last year's Giro and he's a familiar voice to podcast listeners. We thought we'd talk to Max about his early years in Britain, how he discovered cycling, his father's link to Robert De Niro, and his Giro d'Italia stage wins. As Our Giro reaches the halfway mark we also explain how the Intergiro competition worked with the help of Magnus Backstedt, who won the classification's blue jersey in 2003. We look back at the day Lionel and Daniel went in search of Riccardo Riccò, there's a classic wine of the day and François Thomazeau plays us out with an appropriate song. The full, unedited Max Sciandri interview will be available for Friends of the Podcast in a couple of days. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. It's time trial day for Our Giro and we look back to the 2013 race and remember the day Alex Dowsett gave Great Britain a stage win they perhaps expected Bradley Wiggins to deliver. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe return refreshed after a virtual rest day with another packed episode. After two years with Team Sky, Dowsett switched to Movistar and the 2013 Giro gave him his first taste of grand tour racing. A tough opening week (is there any other sort at the Giro?) concluded with a 54.8-kilometre time trial. Bradley Wiggins, Team Sky's leader and the reigning Tour de France champion, was the pre-race favourite and the expectation was that he'd get a faltering Giro campaign back on track with a blistering ride against the clock. But Dowsett, one of the earlier starters, set a time that would prove to be untouchable – despite a few nervous moments watching in the hot seat. Hear how he and Movistar prepared for the stage and get under the skin of what it's really like on time trial day at the Giro. In this episode, there's also a Roman pasta cook-off, judged by Felicity Cloake. Are you Team Carbonara or Team Amatriciana? And what goes in an authentic carbonara. (Hint: not cream, ham or mushrooms). The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. COMING TOMORROW: We meet The Supertuscan, Max Sciandri, and talk about his journey from Derby to Tuscany via Los Angeles, his career as a rider, and what the Giro means to him. In 2010, Richie Porte was a first-year professional and rode the Giro d'Italia for Saxo Bank. After a promising sixth place in the opening time trial in Amsterdam he spent the first half of the race comfortably inside the top ten. Then came the stage to L'Aquila, which had been hit by a terrible earthquake the previous year. A huge break got away and gained a lot of time. Porte was in it and ended the day in the pink jersey. We hear from Porte about that Giro and the stage to L'Aquila in particular. Join Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe for a rest day. There's no stage to ride but this episode features a look back at last year's rest day when Richard and Daniel were beseiged by cats seeking to steal their pre-podcast crisps, Lionel cooks the traditional Abruzzese lunch of arrosticini (lamb skewers) and Ciro Scognamiglio adds another rider to his Giro dream team. The full Richie Porte interview will be available for Friends of the Podcast soon. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. Italy was full of confidence in 1990. The country was alive, at the cutting edge of sport and fashion and with a booming economy. About to host the World Cup, the nation's cyclists were on the cusp of a resurgence too. After three years of foreign victors at the Giro, an Italian led from start to finish. Gianni Bugno took the pink jersey in the opening time trial in Bari and defended it all the way to Milan – only the fourth man to lead the race all the way through, and only the second after Eddy Merckx in 1973 to actually do it in the maglia rosa. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe look back at those heady days of 1990 and remember the song that defined the summer. No, not Nessun Dorma, the BBC's World Cup theme, Notte Magiche, or Magic Nights. We break down Bugno's victory, compare and contrast him to football's poster boy Roberto Baggio, assess the state of the Giro at the time, look at Italian cycling's re-emergence and ask how important a role the discovery of EPO as a performance-enhancing drug played in Italy's early Nineties renaissance. We hear from author, historian and expert on all things Italian, John Foot, and from Bugno himself. There's another delve into The Cycling Podcast's back catalogue to discuss the so-called 'Zoncolan of the South', wine of the day, plus musical contributions from Amaraterra (who perform our Giro theme song, Cozze), and François Thomazeau. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. COMING TOMORROW... A rest day at a grand tour usually means a trip to the launderette and a round of press conferences for The Cycling Podcast but tomorrow we look back to an incredible day in 2010 when almost a third of the peloton got in a big break to L'Aquila and Richie Porte announced his arrival as a stage race contender. Part two of our look at the life and times of the Giro d'Italia's record stage winner Mario Cipollini picks up the story in 2002, as he has just won the rainbow jersey at the World Championships. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe look at the final seasons before his eventual retirement, which he had threatened a couple of times previously. The ceremonial skinsuits were a reflection of his flamboyance and marketing power but the doping allegations and darker accusations since retirement have all complicated the Lion King's legacy. We also hear Mark Cavendish's verdict on who was the greatest sprinter. And there's the latest selection from Ciro for his Giro d'Italia dream team. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. COMING TOMORROW... We look back at Italia '90. Not the football World Cup or Nessun Dorma, although both feature, but the Giro led from start to finish by Gianni Bugno, who gave Italy her first victory for four years at a time when the country's confidence was sky high. Mario Cipollini holds the record for the most Giro d’Italia stage wins and so we are going to spend the next two stages of Our Giro looking at his career and life, which has been as turbulent as it’s been flamboyant. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe take a broadly chronological look at the career of the man who was nicknamed the Lion King and Super Mario, who marketing men wanted to use to sell their products and who was the undisputed fastest man in the world for a period in the 1990s. This part takes us to the peak of his career, the 2002 season when he threatened to retire and yet won Milan-Sanremo and the World Championship title. We hear from two of his contemporaries in the bunch sprints, Tom Steels and Ivan Quaranta, from Matt White and from photographer Graham Watson, who saw the Lion King up close. There’s also wine of the day, a delicious simple lunch that combines carbs to brilliant effect, and the regular amacord feature delving into The Cycling Podcast’s back catalogue. As Daniel points out, at the start of the 2000s, the five biggest names in professional cycling were Lance Armstrong, Marco Pantani, Jan Ullrich, Frank Vandenbroucke and Mario Cipollini… All achieved greatness as well as notoriety and could be seen as poster boys for an era when the professionals rode as close to the sun as they could. Strap yourselves in to see if we can tame the Lion King. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. COMING TOMORROW... Our two-part look at the life and career of Mario Cipollini concludes, covering the end of his racing days and a life away from the sport that has been turbulent. Our Giro reaches Mount Etna for its first summit finish and, appropriately enough, the story of one of the Giro’s most famous explosions. Call it a capitulation, a hunger flat, a bonk – cycling has as many terms for running out of fuel and hitting the wall as Eskimos have for ice. In 2002 Cadel Evans, the Australian former mountain biker taking part in his first Grand Tour, was in the pink jersey and only had one mountain to hang on. Evans was riding for Mapei, the world’s best team, in what was, as we discussed in our stage 4 episode, a controversial, scandal-ridden Giro. In this episode we speak to Evans about his baptism of fire and about the stage when his body said ‘enough’ – he tells us what it was like to ride for Mapei, to have a teammate expelled after testing positive and to find himself in the lead so close to the finish. Although Evans didn’t win, the experience did provide an important building block in a career that would see him win the Tour de France nine years later. Amarcord is our daily visit to the vaults and in today’s we revisit Giromondo, an episode of Kilometre 0 from the first Giro we covered in full as The Cycling Podcast in 2016. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. FURTHER READING OR WATCHING... Our Giro is still on the island of Sicily and Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe turn their attention to the ‘Prosecco Supernovas’, or one-hit wonders: riders who burnt brightly but briefly at the Giro d’Italia. They include Ivan Quaranta, the sprinter who upstaged Mario Cipollini at the 1999 Giro. Twenty-one years later, Daniel caught up with Quaranta to find out where – or, indeed, if – it all went wrong. We look at the strange case of the Swedes at the Giro, recalling Gosta Pettersson’s surprise win in 1971 and speaking to Tommy Prim who, a decade later, twice finished second overall. Then there is Damiano Cunego, who was just 22 when he won the 2004 race. Cunego looked set to become Italian cycling’s next big star but, in a career that continued another 14 years, he never again went close – we investigate why. Amarcord is our regular look back at The Cycling Podcast’s previous experiences at the Giro and in this one we join Lionel and Daniel in the midst of a casino in the Dolomites. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. COMING TOMORROW... In stage six of Our Giro we’ll be looking at the 2002 race and Cadel Evans’ doomed attempt to win his debut Grand Tour. Our Giro arrives in Sicily and Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe discuss the race’s rich history of controversy, tactical ruthlessness and downright cheating. From police raids to outlandish excuses for positive doping tests to Richard’s shocking wine-tasting notes, we cover it all. We talk about Eddy Merckx’s positive test at Savona in 1969, the day a rampant Marco Pantani was stopped in his tracks and kicked out of the race, the stage that pushed the legendary race director Vincenzo Torriani to the limit, and the internal rivalry between Carerra teammates Roberto Visentini (the defending champion) and Stephen Roche in 1987. Plus there’s arguably the first social media controversy. Having visited Sicily with the Giro twice in recent years, our coverage of the mafia has been perhaps superficial so we get the lowdown on the organised crime network from an expert, author and historian John Dickie. And Lionel cooks a delightful summery dish of pasta alla norma with the expert guidance of award-winning food writer Felicity Cloake. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. The Cycling Podcast returns to Bettys to discuss the penultimate day of the World Championships in Harrogate. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and François Thomazeau discuss the women’s road race, won with an astonishing 104-kilometre solo break by Dutch rider Annemiek van Vleuten, before recapping the controversial disqualification of another Dutch rider, Nils Eekhoff, for drafting a team car after a crash. There’s also a look ahead to the next time the World Championships are to be held on British soil, in Scotland in 2023. Finally there’s another despatch from Irish rider Conor Dunne. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science In Sport.
Eight days on the road covering the 2019 Tour of Britain, condensed into one, slightly longer than normal, Home Roads episode. I front the tv coverage of the race, but this special podcast has a look behind the scenes, featuring some of the people who make it happen. You'll also hear many of the famous riders who compete, gaining an insight into the ups and downs of the often precarious life as a pro-cyclist - plus one who is undoubtedly the rising star of the sport. Includes interviews with Mathieu van der Poel, Matteo Trentin, Mikel Landa, Mark Cavendish, Mark Renshaw, Bernie Eisel, Steve Cummings, Alex Dowsett, Yanto Barker, Conor Dunne and many more. A thrilling finish to the final sprinters’ stage of the 2019 Giro d’Italia saw a win for a small Italian team and a change in the points competition, with the Ciclamino jersey moving from Arnaud Demare to Pascal Ackerman. In The Cycling Podcast, Richard Moore and Daniel Friebe discuss what happened and we hear from Conor Dunne and from Ackerman’s lead-out men, Rudi Selig and Michael Schwarzmann. Ahead of two more days in the mountains, there are also interviews with Mikel Landa, Pavel Sivakov and Vincenzo Nibali’s “mind coach,” Piermarino Rosti. And we hear from two riders at opposite ends of their careers, Mikel Honore, the young Dane riding his first Grand Tour, and Markel Irizar, the veteran Basque riding his final Grand Tour. The Giro d’Italia was turned on its head after a third consecutive day of attacking, exciting and unpredictable racing. Join Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe in Courmayeur as they discuss stage 14, which saw the pink jersey change hands, but perhaps not in the way it was expected. Many were expecting Primoz Roglic to inherit the jersey from his Slovenian compatriot Jan Polanc but it was the stage winner Richard Carapaz who sprung a surprise, gaining almost two minutes to take the pink jersey by seven seconds. We hear from Carapaz’s Movistar sports director Max Sciandri and from Roglic’s sports director Addy Engels. Plus there’s reaction from Rafal Majka, confirmation of the reasons behind Bauke Mollema’s scheduled stop on the road the other day, Joe Dombrowski’s verdict on arguably his best two days as a grand tour rider and a word from the gruppetto from Irish champion Conor Dunne. As the Giro finally enters the mountains, we catch up with Larry Warbasse and Conor Dunne. At the end of last season they were jobless after the collapse of Aqua Blue Sport and set off on a bike-packing adventure they called the NoGo Tour. Now they're back racing the roads of Italy - Larry with AG2R, Conor with Israel Cycling Academy. We also meet the legendary Lee Turner, Melbourne's multi-hued pro-kit enthusiast, who's on a one-man mission to put a bit of fun and colour back into cycling. Stuart Clapp is planning a photo-shoot with cyclists on horseback, but he still finds time to have a pop at Adam Blythe's dress sense. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Ten days before the Giro d'Italia started, Conor Dunne became a father for the first time. Having missed out on all the grand tours last season when he was with the soon-to-implode Aqua Blue team, he didn't want to miss the opportunity to ride the Giro d'Italia. But it meant leaving his newborn baby and partner behind. In this episode of Kilometre 0, we ask riders and managers about parenthood in the peloton. Kilometre 0 is supported by Hansgrohe.
December 7 | Episode 4 After the incredible feats we've covered in the first three episodes of Explore, it's time for a bit of a gear change this time as we discover the joy of cycling and the way a journey on two wheels can develop (and sometimes test) a friendship. Lionel's Low Route is the antidote to the Haute Route, which tackles every mountain on the horizon. Carefully plotting a two-and-a-half day ride across some of England's flattest countryside, Lionel set off with television commentator and author Ned Boulting to prove that there can be a luxury end of the bikepacking spectrum. With Ned on his heavy commuting bike with luggage (some of it Lionel's!), and Lionel on his carbon-fibre Look, and joined by Passepartout Simon Gill, they set off for the inaugural Cambridge-Southwold-Cambridge Classic to talk cycling and much more. We also hear from professional riders Conor Dunne and Larry Warbasse, who set off on their own unsupported bike ride – the No Go Tour – when their Aqua Blue Sport team folded on the eve of the Tour of Britain. They talk about the ups and downs of going on a multi-day ride with a friend. And in the final part of a bumper episode, Richard Moore meets the inspirational Ishbel Holmes, who you may know as @WorldBikeGirl on Twitter. She's the author of the book Me, My Bike and A Street Dog Called Lucy. She set off with next to no money, and very little long-distance cycling experience, to ride round the world. The journey started as a trip to recover some money owed to her by the Iranian Cycling Federation, but turned into something quite different. It's a story that has to be heard to be believed. **Explore is supported by Rapha, Science In Sport and The Economist.** **RUNNING ORDER** **Part one:** Lionel's Low Route with Ned Boulting **Part two:** (from 1:01:00) Conor Dunne and Larry Warbasse on the No Go Tour and how to ensure a friendship survives bikepacking **Part three:** (from 1:09:00) Ishbel Holmes on riding round the world **THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS** **Rapha** support The Cycling Podcast all year and that support has enabled us to get the wheels rolling on series one of Explore. In the November episode of The Cycling Podcast Féminin Richard Moore, Orla Chennaoui and Rose Manley discuss the latest events in women's cycling. There's an interview with Lucy Kennedy of Australia and Mitchelton-Scott at the recent Taiwan KOM Challenge, which she won, and we hear from French rider Audrey Cordon-Ragot on her move from Wiggle-High5 to Trek-Segafredo. Rachel McKinnon recently became the first trans woman to win a world cycling title, taking gold in the sprint in the 35-44 age group at the UCI Masters Championships. We discuss the possible implications for women's sport and speak to Madeleine Pape, a former runner turned academic and an authority on efforts by sports bodies at gender verification, including setting levels of testosterone for female athletes. "Gender verification," she has said, "whether it relies on genetics, DNA, hormones, or gonads, is destined to fail." There's also an interview with Isabel Best, author of a new book, Queens of Pain: Legends and Rebels of Cycling. November 14 | Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas speaks to The Cycling Podcast this week as he recalls his victory in July, discusses training in Tenerife and his chances of repeating his success in another Grand Tour — and takes issue with the podcast’s Richard Moore for dismissing him as a potential winner, even after he won back to back stages in the Alps! Richard, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe also discuss the latest news and we hear from podcast regulars François Thomazeau, Ciro Scognamiglio, Seb Piquet and Orla Chennaoui. November 7 | In this bumper episode of The Cycling Podcast, Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe look at the long-established route into the professional ranks for young riders – the stagiaire system – and hear an extended interview with Freddy Ovett, who rode as a stagiaire for BMC Racing earlier this year. Each year many of the World Tour teams offer stagiaire placements to young riders for a variety of reasons – to introduce a new signing to the team, to offer a taste of the pro peloton to a talented prospect or to make up their minds on a rider they’re not 100 per cent sure about. We discuss how the system works and look at success rate for riders who sample this kind of work experience or extended job interview. Then we hear from Freddy Ovett, who was in conversation with Richard earlier this year. His surname will be familiar to anyone who followed world-class athletics in the late 1970s and 1980s because Freddy’s father is 1980 Olympic 800m champion Steve Ovett. Freddy Ovett, who was also a talented runner, talks about how he switched to cycling and is still determined to make it into the pro ranks even if the stopwatch is starting to tick. With The Cycling Podcast set for a sell-out live show at the Clapham Grand theatre next week, and with a date at Cardiff’s St David’s Hall at the end of the month, we round off the episode with a couple of clips from one of our live shows in Edinburgh this spring, featuring Lionel and François Thomazeau. November 1 | In another packed episode of The Cycling Podcast, Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe give their snap reaction to the 2019 Giro d'Italia route, which will stay in Italy (bar a brief incursion into San Marino) and will feature some serious climbing in the second half of the race. With the race starting in Bologna next May, Lionel attempts to draw Daniel into a debate about how to make authentic bolognese sauce. We also discuss Christian Prudhomme's proposal to ban power meters from the Tour de France and ask whether it would change the way grand tours are raced. We also update the Aqua Blue Sport team situation following the team's sudden halt earlier this year and hear from their rider Andy Fenn, who is still looking for a team for the 2019 season. And in the final part we turn our attention to track racing and hear from Callum Skinner and Chris Hoy on the trend for sprinters to use bigger gears and whether this is changing the demands of the event. October 26 | The 2019 World Tour season finally drew to a close with the Tour of Guangxi last week and this week the route for the 2019 Tour de France was unveiled. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe assess the 2019 Tour, which will take the peloton in a diagonal from Brussels to the south west and then across to the Alps before the traditional final stage in Paris. What does the 2019 route say about the Tour? Who will the route suit? And just as importantly what will be on the menu next July? We also get a taste of François Thomazeaus's French flavour… The Cycling Podcast is supported by [Rapha](www.rapha.cc) and [Science in Sport](www.scienceinsport.com). **The Cycling Podcast Live shows** Tickets are available for our live show at St David's Hall in Cardiff on November 27. The first episode of The Cycling Podcast: No Brakes features the recent Milan Red Hook criterium, one of the new events that has gained a big following and a place on cycling's 'alternative calendar.' Calvert Churchill and Keira McVitty report from Milan, speaking to some of the organisers and riders, including Red Hook founder David Trimble and Angus Morton, the Australian who has ridden as a professional on the road for a number of years. Morton says that events like Red Hook, a fixed-wheel criterium that combines the spirits and bike handling skills of the cycling courier work, the craft of track racing and the speed of city-centre criteriums, are "the future of cycling" and that the UCI and pro teams should be taking note. As the 42nd Ryder Cup takes place in Paris, Caroline Barker, alongside former PGA President Roger Warren and LPGA tour professional Olafia Kristinsdottir, explores whether the competition should follow its junior edition and have teams made up of men and women. When their team folded and their last chance to put themselves in the shop window for next season was taken away, professional cyclists Larry Warbasse and Conor Dunne packed up their bikes and headed out on an eight day tour of their own from their base in Nice. Former US Champion Larry and Irish Champion Conor take us through the emotions of their "No Go Tour". 30 years ago the brand new Olympic 100 metres champion Ben Johnson was stripped of his gold medal at the Seoul Olympics for doping. We look at what's changed since the "the dirtiest race in history" and hear from Calvin Smith, one of only two men in the 1988 final that was never implicated in a drugs scandal or failed a test. We also hear from the founding president of the World Anti-Doping Agency Dick Pound who had to act as Johnson's legal representative at his International Olympic Committee hearing in 1988. Michelle Gormley-McLaughlin hadn't played a game of rugby until her 40th birthday. Seven years on she's just earned her first cap for Ulster, proving it's never too late to take up a new sport. As the regular MLB season draws to a close we're in Colorado with the state's Vintage Base Ball Association as they celebrate and play by the original rules of the sport that date back to 1864 and the American Civil War. And boxer turned actor, turned acting boxer, Brad Moore joins us to talk about his new film "Gloves Off" and explains how two years on the stand-up comedy circuit helped him learn to act at the age of 40.
September 18 | The first post-Vuelta podcast features a report from the Canadian World Tour races from François Thomazeau, including interviews with Michael Matthews, Nathan Haas and Simon Gerrans. David Millar tells us about his bid to become president of the professional cyclists’ association, and there’s a response from the CPA. There are extracts from the diaries kept by Mark Downey at the Tour of Britain and Conor Dunne and Larry Warbasse at the #NoGoTour, and Ned Boulting tells us about the Tour de Ned. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science in Sport
Larry Warbasse and Conor Dunne were all set to ride the 2018 Ovo Tour of Britain until their team, Aqua Blue Sport, folded around them. Undeterred, the pair have set off on their own NoGo Tour, a freewheeling bikepacking trip around the cols and climbs of France and Italy. Larry talks through the trip with presenter Ian Parkinson, and sheds light on the precarious career prospects of a pro cyclist. Mark McNally of Wanty- Groupe Gobert reflects on his ten Tours of Britain and Pippa York looks back nearly 30 years to her victory in the Kellogg's Tour. Flemish legend Kenny Van Vlaminck is back with new sponsors, new nutrition suggestions and a new line in poetry. If you're looking for more sensible thoughts on cycling diets, Brian Holm has them, and Stu Clapp talks cyclo-cross and the shortness of Assos shorts. If you're a fan of Kenny, and someone must be, make sure you stay listening right until the end. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
November 1 | In this episode of The Cycling Podcast we sit down to talk to Irish rider Conor Dunne about his experiences at the Vuelta a España. Dunne was part of the Aqua Blue team – the first Irish squad to ride a Grand Tour – that set out from Nîmes in southern France in August. For the 6ft 8in tall rider, the Vuelta presented a huge challenge every day. He finished 158th – and last – overall, although it has to be remembered that in order to finish last in a Grand Tour the rider has to actually finish. Lionel Birnie met Conor while he was visiting his parents in Hertfordshire after his final race of the season, the World Championships in Norway, and before he headed off on holiday to Guatemala and Nicaragua. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science in Sport.
On the inaugural Law and Justice Podcast, Jane Mulcahy speaks with Fiona Donson about the Unseen, Unheard conference, Professor Jules Lobel and Dr Mary Rogan discuss solitary confinement, Ivan McCutcheon tells us about Cork Chamber's "Get to Grips with Data Protection" seminar, and Conor Dunne lifts the lid on UCC Law Society's plans for the coming semester.
