In a promising step toward making our roads safer, a groundbreaking AI-powered camera system is currently being tested in Devon and Cornwall, England. Known as Heads-Up, this innovative technology is designed to detect drivers who may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. By identifying behavior consistent with impaired driving, the system enables police to take action before dangerous situations escalate into accidents. So, how does it work? The AI cameras quickly analyze driving patterns to spot any unusual or risky behavior that could indicate impairment. Once flagged, police stationed further along the road are alerted. They can then stop the vehicle, speak with the driver, and carry out roadside tests for alcohol or drugs to confirm whether the driver is under the influence. The potential impact of this technology is significant. Research shows that drivers under the influence of alcohol are six times more likely to cause fatal crashes. By enabling early detection and intervention, Heads-Up could play a crucial role in reducing these tragic incidents. Devon and Cornwall Police are hopeful that this pioneering system will not only save lives but also create a safer environment for all road users. This initiative serves as a powerful reminder that technology can be a force for good, addressing critical issues and making the world a better, safer place—one road at a time.
Another suspension of a chief officer at the helm of the Devon and Cornwall Police prompts a call for the police and crime commissioner to resign over her “bad decision making”. The next phase of the Exmouth £3.3 million seawall repair begins – bringing some disruption until Easter. Torbay Council asks its residents what they think of the proposed budget. And if you couldn't get ‘bogies' out of your head during the early noughties, Dick and Dom join us to explain what they have been up to since they were ‘In Da Bungalow' and why they love Christmas! It's all on Devoncast from Radio Exe and the Local Democracy Reporting Service, presented by Bradley Gerrard and Alison Stephenson.
Riots in response to the murder of three young girls in Southport, Merseyside spread as far as Plymouth. This week's Devoncast hears from Devon and Cornwall Police about their response to the disturbances, and we also get an insight into what people are thinking on the ground, including from those standing up against hatred. Elsewhere, they say a week is a long time in politics, and that certainly seems the case with the Cullompton railway station plans, which seemed on track at the end of last month but which may now be hitting the buffers. Guest Steve Keable, a Liberal Democrat councillor on Mid Devon District Council, explains why he hopes the scheme comes to fruition and why it is important to unlock major housing projects in the town. And finally, we look into a suggestion from an East Devon District Council planning committee about the prospect of forcing developers to complete sites they have received planning permission for within a certain amount of time. It's all in the new Devoncast from Radio Exe and the Local Democracy Reporting Service, presented this week by Bradley Gerrard, with guests Josh Tate from Radio Exe and Cllr Steve Keable. The programme is available for LDRS partners to use in full or in part.
A Death in Cornwall by Daniel Silva Art restorer and legendary spy Gabriel Allon has slipped quietly into London to attend a reception at the Courtauld Gallery celebrating the return of a stolen self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh. But when an old friend from the Devon and Cornwall Police seeks his help with a baffling murder investigation, he finds himself pursuing a powerful and dangerous new adversary. The victim is Charlotte Blake, a celebrated professor of art history from Oxford who spends her weekends in the same seaside village where Gabriel once lived under an assumed identity. Her murder appears to be the work of a diabolical serial killer who has been terrorizing the Cornish countryside. But there are a number of telltale inconsistencies, including a missing mobile phone. And then there is the mysterious three-letter cypher she left behind on a notepad in her study. Gabriel soon discovers that Professor Blake was searching for a looted Picasso worth more than a $100 million, and he takes up the chase for the painting as only he can—with six Impressionist canvases forged by his own hand and an unlikely team of operatives that includes a world-famous violinist, a beautiful master thief, and a lethal contract killer turned British spy. The result is a stylish and wildly entertaining mystery that moves at lightning speed from the cliffs of Cornwall to the enchanted island of Corsica and, finally, to a breathtaking climax on the very doorstep of 10 Downing Street. After Annie by Anna Quindlen When Annie Brown dies suddenly, her husband, her four young children and her closest friend are left to struggle without the woman who centered their lives. Bill Brown finds himself overwhelmed, and Annie's best friend Annemarie is lost to old bad habits without Annie's support. It is Annie's daughter, Ali, forced to try to care for her younger brothers and even her father, who manages to maintain some semblance of their former lives for them all, and who confronts the complicated truths of adulthood. Yet over the course of the next year, while Annie looms large in their memories, all three are able to grow, to change, even to become stronger and more sure of themselves. The enduring power Annie gave to those who loved her is the power to love, and to go on without her. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to Episode 19 of Season 2, where delve into the subject of leading performance and how it can feel like the Spanish Inquisition! I was inspired to record this podcast, having attended a talk on police performance given by Humberside DCC Paul Anderson, at the Emergency Services Show yesterday, 21/09/22. It was entitled, 'A Victim-Focused Approach to Performance'. My reflections in this (longer!) episode include: the Humberside 'Compstat' style approach; the expectations of performance management at each rank (Sergeant, Inspector, Chief Inspector); what a one team approach looks like; the links to the CVF (We Deliver, Support and Inspire, and We Take Ownership); debrief on the presentation and Humberside's journey from bad to good performance; PEEL inspections; how brutal interrogation aids accountability; differences between strategic and tactical performance management; among other things like my own personal experience having worked in the top corridors of Devon and Cornwall Police. Whether you're aspiring to the next rank or seeking to solidify your competence as a leader, I hope you find this useful leadership CPD. As a coach/mentor supporting UK (and beyond!) police promotion candidates, I aim to provide valuable and meaningful guidance and information to help you succeed in promotion; especially those aspiring to Sergeant, Inspector and Chief Inspector. The council has adapted the area, spending quite a bit of cash to reduce the camber and gradient. To read more, click the BBC News article here.
On the 20th of October 1998, 40 year old Lyn Bryant went out for a walk with her Lurcher dog Jay in the village of Ruan High Lanes in Cornwall. At around 2:30pm a holidaymaker was travelling along a remote wooded lane when they discovered Lyn's body on the edge of a field close to the road. She had been attacked and brutally murdered. Philip Antony Bevington, who goes by Tony, began growing Cannabis plants for medical reasons, when he was diagnosed with stage three kidney failure two years ago, an incurable and terminal condition. Having tried legally available cannabis oil and found them not to work, Tony decided to grow his own plants and extract the CBD and THC compounds from the oils himself. The 80-year-old believes that these could prolong his life by ten years. But, following a visit in January by Devon and Cornwall Police, Tony's plants have all been confiscated. We chat about the raid and his up coming court case in this interview. His case will be up on the 16th of November and you can find Tony over on facebook if you would like to reach out and show support. https://www.facebook.com/pbevington If you would like to support the development of the Cork Cannabis Activist hub the patreon is www.patreon.com/martinsworld For BitCoin donations follow this link https://checkout.opennode.com/p/597e0e1d-ede6-47be-8d83-854c4237b06e

Drunk people can't properly socially distance, a UK police officer warned after finishing a late shift Saturday -- the first day that pubs reopened in England after the coronavirus shutdown."A predictably busy night and confirmed what we knew, alcohol and social distancing is not a good combination," tweeted John Apter, national chairman of the Police Federation, a staff association for police in England and Wales.Apter, who was on duty in the southern England city of Southampton, said he and colleagues had dealt with "happy drunks, angry drunks, fights" and antisocial behaviour. "What was crystal clear is that drunk people can't/won't socially distance," he said.In a post on Twitter, London's Metropolitan Police urged people to "please be responsible, stay safe and follow social distancing and other guidance that has been put in place" as pubs reopened. But images taken Saturday night in the central London district of Soho, known for its pubs and bars, showed crowded streets.Five pubs in Nottinghamshire, in England's East Midlands region, decided to close early following anti-social behaviour, police said, and officers made four arrests following reports of a smashed window and minor assault. However, Inspector Craig Berry thanked "the majority of the public who have acted responsibly throughout Saturday."Devon and Cornwall Police, in southwest England, said they had received more than 1,000 calls on Saturday from members of the public, mostly related to "drink-related disorder."And in Essex, southeast England, an officer tweeted to say police had made four arrests.UK Health Minister Matt Hancock told Sky News' Sophy Ridge that he was pleased overall with how Saturday went."From what I have seen, although there are some pictures to the contrary, very, very largely people have acted responsibly and this balanced message is so important. People should enjoy summer safely," he said Sunday."You have seen from Leicester and other places we don't shirk from bringing in drastic measures if that is what is needed to control the virus. But the overall plan has always been through the lifting of the lockdown to try to lift the national measures -- but be absolutely crystal clear we will tackle local flare-ups when we see them."Restrictions were reimposed Tuesday in Leicester, a city in the East Midlands, after a spike in coronavirus cases. It was the first in the UK to be put under a localized lockdown. text by Laura Smith-Spark, Sara Spary and Zahid Mahmood, CNN

Tackling Traumatic Stress & UK Policing: In this interview Dr Jessica Miller talks extensively about dealing with exposure to trauma, her own experience of dealing with PTSD and her remarkable work supporting UK first responders/blue light services. Dr Miller goes into detail about the UK's first survey to assess trauma management and working conditions in UK policing which was concluded in December 2018. The show will potentially be of benefit to anyone coming to terms with exposure to traumatic incidents or those helping to support a loved one. Dr Miller provides a wealth of information to help us deepen our understanding of trauma exposure and how to deal with it. She also details her invaluable work with Police Care UK. Guidance about PTSD and Policing from the College of Policing Operation Surfwell - Devon and Cornwall Police 10% Happier App Meditation for Fidgety Sceptics book The Left of Burnout podcast is produced by John Allison, a British Army veteran with 24 years of service. Upon retirement he became health and wellbeing manager for two large London-based advertising agencies. Five years later, in 2017, he started holistic wellbeing service Motion to Mind™ and developed the 4M Framework™ for health and happiness. More recently he launched a groundbreaking modular program, Stress Injury Prevention Training™ (SIPT™) to provide employers with a new program to support employees in work and in life. Left of Burnout is a phrase coined by John Allison and is a take on the term Left of Boom or Left of Bang which was used to describe a preventative approach to the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) threat in Iraq when John served as Intelligence Officer - Combined Explosives Exploitation Cell (CEXC) Baghdad. Stress related ill-health can be visualised as being on a continuum, from being well on the far left, to being mildly irritated, to dealing with anxiety, depression, traumatic stress injury, burnout and psychosis at the far right hand end of the continuum. Helping people to empower themselves to keep far, far left of burnout and stay well, is the aim of the show.
