On this episode of the show Phillip is joined again by Brandt and they talk about the movies Dunkirk (2017), Enemy at the Gates (2001), and The Big Red One (1980). Phillip starts the show by making some corrections from this and previous shows. Then he talks about what he has been watching at home and the theaters. Then he gets into the prerecorded show. Phillip and Brandt start by talking about; Paris, Texas, Zorro the Gay Blade, The Legend of the Lone Ranger, Love at First Bite, The Pirate Movie, The Apple Dumpling Gang, Superfuzz, and Lone Wolf McQuade. Then Phillip talks about the Zorro the Gay Blade and Stripes soundtrack. They then talk about Dunkirk, their love of 1941, Kubrick and Nolan being the same kind of film makers (maybe), Phillip reminds Brandt about the documentary on Netflix called The Filmworker, they then discuss their favorite Christopher Nolan scenes. Then talk about Inception, Shudder Island, and The Sixth Sense. They talk about what a great actor and director Kenneth Branagh is (Dead Again, Murder on the Orient Express, Hamlet, and Henry V). Then it's time for Enemy at the Gates. They talk about accents in the film, which leads Phillip to tell a story about K-19 Widowmaker. Brandt talks about WWII propaganda and they both agree on Kingdom of Heaven the Director's Cut being a great film. Then they dive into The Big Red One. Brandt talks about how much better the Reconstruction version is. Phillip talks about how great the director's cuts of Aliens and Alien 3 are. Phillip and Brandt talk about the reality of war and the realism of the movie. Then they discuss Sam Fuller's other work. They talk about a documentary on Sam Fuller that they both saw that made them dive deep into Sam Fuller. The documentary was called Sam Fuller, The Typewriter, the Rife, and the movie camera. (It's on Youtube.) Then Phillip talks about Sam Fuller's I Shot Jesse James, which leads Brandt into talking about The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Phillip then talks about 2 more Sam Fuller movies; Pick Up On South Street and Fixed Bayonets. It's a long show, but it is full of movie talk. write us an email at mycelluloidheart@gmail.com Hope you enjoy.

Since the Kindergarten Teacher is certainly one of those well made films that not enough people are watching or reviewing, we’re determined to help rectify that situation with a full Oscars Sprint Profile here. Maggie Gyllenhaal is certainly awards worthy. Writer / Director Sara Colangelo is becoming a name to watch out for come awards season, and this film does still have some of the biggest Oscar pundits in its corner. So we were thrilled to squeeze it into our loaded schedule and give it the full OSP treatment. As usual, we dedicate the first half of the episode to a non-spoiler review with production notes, cast & crew bios, movie specs, and non-spoiler reviews of the production values, performances, and script. Then we dive headlong into the plot after some spoiler warning dance music. The movie shook free some memories from our school days and earned quite loud reaction from us during our watch, and we don’t hold back in either segment. If you enjoy our coverage of Netflix and VOD properties, you have to go no further than our previous episode. We debuted MMO Weekly, which to mention a few of the many subjects we’ll cover, will give you regular updates on movie news, box office, previews, our interactive trivia games, and of course, MMOW will include reviews of what else we’re watching. This first episode showcased several Netflix properties like Outlaw King, They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead, The Other Side of the Wind, and Filmworker, and we’ll certainly be keeping you well reviewed on the streaming giant in the coming months with films like Buster Scruggs, Birdbox, and Roma on the near horizon. Otherwise, go back to our Yearly and 2 Quarterly Netflix reviews to bring yourself current. The Kindergarten Teacher is also the 23rd film reviewed in our OSP series from 2018. We covered all of the major nominees from last year’s Academy Awards, and now we’re doing the same and then some. With our year round coverage, we’ve been able to expand our field of reviews to not only all the eventual nominees, but also the major contenders, eventual snubs, and our sentimental favorites with our complimentary movie event series of reviews. In any case, we’ve now covered near 30 films of 2018 with full episodes dedicated to their respective reviews, and you can find full playlists on our Soundcloud account to binge listen at you leisure. Chat with us on social media and play along with our weekly movie trivia game, #SixDegreesOfMMO. You can hear our round 4 winners in MMOW 1 and listen to our challenge number 5. Tony Zierra’s documentary Filmworker, opening May 11, highlights the best of movie-making.  It sings an unsung hero, and through him, all the unsung heroes of Hollywood. Actor Leon Vitali got his break playing the antagonist in Kubrick’s period masterpiece Barry Lyndon.  For a few years afterwards his star was rising -- until suddenly his face disappeared from stage and screen.  But his name didn't disappear from the credits of Kubrick's films; it merely moved down.  From costar of Barry Lyndon to, in subsequent films, “Casting,” “costumes,” and “personal assistant to Mr. Kubrick."  Vitali turned his life over fully to realizing the creative vision of his visionary boss.  Zierra encountered him while making a documentary about Kubrick's last film, Eyes Wide Shut, and immediately pivoted to focus on him. At the Hamptons Film Festival, Alec sat down with both men for a riveting discussion about the film; about the intense, mercurial Kubrick -- and about the sacrifices necessary to make great art.

Filmworker is an observation on how legends and legendary works are created. The complex, productive and interdependent relationship between Leon Vitali and Stanley Kubrick was founded on devotion, artistic passion, sensibility, sacrifice and the grueling joy of the creative process. It’s a rare person who would give up fame and fortune to toil in obscurity for someone else’s creative vision. Yet, that’s exactly what Leon Vitali did after his acclaimed performance as ‘Lord Bullingdon” in Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon. On the brink of a successful acting career, the young actor stepped back from the limelight in order to become the right-hand man to perhaps the most influential and ground-breaking filmmaker of his time, Stanley Kubrick. Vitali played a crucial part in the director's career, working tirelessly in close collaboration with Kubrick in helping to make and maintain his extraordinary legacy of work. Vitali's unique working relationship with Kubrick is explored through anecdotes about his candid, funny (and sometimes shocking) experiences with the director, enhanced with a rich variety of previously-unseen archival materials including photos, videos, letters and notebooks from Vitali's personal collection, and brought together through interviews with actors, family, and key film industry professionals who worked with both Kubrick and Vitali. Filmworker. Director Tony Zierra joins us to talk about the creative process, Stanley Kubrick and his closest and most dedicated collaborator, Leon Vitali, who once described his own occupation simply as “Filmworker.” For news and updates go to: kinolorber.com/film/filmworker
