MOVIE DISCUSSION: Kathryn joins Melvin to discuss a late-90's Canadian sci-fi thriller, Cube! Why? Because Melvin has a podcast and he gets to choose what they cover! From talented directing to the intriguing mystery of the cube itself, the two discuss all sorts of exciting material in this episode. Tune in now!Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 45-minutes discussing various Google "AI Overview" answers, laughing at their absurdity, and also reviewing how bad AI (or, large language models: LLMs) simply amplify lies, misinformation, or useless search and research practices (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)Kathryn and Melvin agree: the direction behind Cube is immensely impressive. The Canadian Film Centre is a program that helps network industry partners and volunteers with projects they've chosen to support. Cube was one such project. (Source: Sardonicast 150 [timestamp: 00:16:09])There's a perpetual unease and oppression to Cube that meshes well with its pacing. One angle about Cube's story is that of how there are unwitting participants in systematic issues. The characters are all named in reference to prison, although not all the characters are named after prison's, as Kathryn learned down the grapevine.Melvin, "[Cube] at some point is a math movie."Melvin talks about his current fascination with numbers as a definitive thing a world of excessive subjectivities.Because the setting and scenario of the cube is so static, the film allows for complex, dynamic character interactions.Thoughts on the ending, and the cube as a metaphor for life.Recommendations:Authority by Jeff VanderMeer (2014) (Book)Saw (2004) (Movie)MAILBAG: Send questions with your first name and we'll answer them in future episodes! Cube-Podcast: Ein Ausflug in den Würfel“We haven't been moving in circles, the rooms have.” Hello and thank you for downloading another episode of The Flixters Podcast! This week on the show we talk about a strange, almost psychedelic, movie called In Fabric. What happens if you bought an item of clothing which somehow inhibited evil powers? Ask for a refund or run like mad? Listen to the show to find out what this movie's all about :) On Anniversary Corner we bring you Triangle, Cube Zero, House on Haunted Hill, Leprechaun 2 and A Nightmare on Elm Street 5:The Dream Child from 30 years ago! Scary right? On Hidden Gems we want to share with you a film starring James and Dave Franco called The Disaster Artist. It really is a Gem of a movie because not only is the acting top-notch but the story is very funny. Download the show to find out a little bit more about it. CUBE, CUBE2: HYPERCUBE, CUBE ZERO

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss Cube Zero, a prequel that wraps up the Cube trilogy. Another group of fools is trapped in a deadly cube. This time around, we spend a large amount of time with cubicle workers Dodd (David Huband) and Eric (Zachary Bennett). Their day job is to monitor the cube's behavior for any redundancies. When too many things go sideways, the corporation sends in Jax (Michael Riley), a sadist under the best of circumstances. Can anyone survive the Cube unscathed? A return to form after the cheap-looking Cube 2: Hypercube, Cube: Zero takes inspiration from the first film while injecting a healthy dose of corporate satire. Performances are less broad across the board, and the film's connection to the original becomes more clear as things go on. Better than one might suspect, Cube Zero is a fun entry in to end this science-fiction series on. Mat founds the female jewel thief capers of Ocean's 8 to be amusing but a little too familiar at times. Thrasher enjoys Season 2 of The Toys That Made Us, especially the episode on Legos. Amy & Erica become wine moms in this episode by drinking Wine Cube while talking about the Cube franchise which includes Cube (1997), Cube 2: Hypercube (2002), & Cube Zero (2004). As a bonus, we also cover an episode from Twilight Zone (Season 3, Episode 14) titled, "Five Characters in Search of an Exit," that served as the inspiration for the Cube story, as well as Elevated (1996), the short film Vincenzo Natali made prior to the first feature of the franchise.
Episode 71 - Don't Be A Square - A Cube Retrospective What we're about to tell you is a universal truth. The powers that be will spend years trying to convince you otherwise, but the simple fact remains that math.... is indeed.... stupid and pointless. I can remember asking the same question time and time again. “When am I ever gonna to need to know this?” “Well, if you want to become a physicist, or an engineer, or even an architect this will come in handy.” To which I would reply, “Mrs. Howard, I just woke up from a 40 minute nap during your lecture, and decided to see what the lead from my mechanical pencil tastes like. I think it's safe to say that my future will be relatively math free.” Of course there are exceptions. Should I ever find myself in a seemingly endless grid of constantly shifting cuboidal rooms fitted with nightmarish booby traps, and my only hope of survival hinges on solving a series of complex algebraic equations, my guess is I will wish that I had paid a little more attention. This week we decided to discuss the only time that we could think of that math would come in even remotely handy. We grabbed some M-43 N.E. IPA from Old Nation Brewing, and discussed the Cube Trilogy. E=MC(scared)! FILMS WE DISCUSSED CUBE (1997) CUBE 2: HYPERCUBE (2002) CUBE ZERO: (2004) Follow us!
