Send us a textWelcome to another inspiring testimony. Today, I am honored to be joined by David Medina. David opens up about his early years, sharing how he found himself involved in criminal activity at a young age. His path eventually led him to join a gang, spending much of his youth in and out of juvenile detention. Over time, David's life spiraled further, resulting in multiple incarcerations. In a pivotal moment, David was shot in the head, narrowly escaping death as the bullet miraculously stopped before penetrating too deeply. Ultimately, David was charged under RICO as a shot caller and faced a tough legal battle. It was during a period of isolation that God truly captured David's heart and transformed his life. After his release, David founded his own ministry, Bangin' 4 Jesus, to spread his message of redemption.

David Medina has taken a simple love of music and spun it into a full-fledged, self-sustaining business via his DJ talents.Tune in this Friday to learn how he was able to spin all the pieces together for a record breaking service.Segment 1In this opening segment, Jeremiah talks to David about his background, from his ethnic roots to his rough upbringing in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. David discusses the impact his father has had in his life, outlining his father's journey as an Dominican immigrant. He speaks of the early influence music has had on his life from the Latin music playing in his own home to watching the rise of Hip-Hop in New York as a child. David goes into his formal education at Alfred University, where he studied art and sculpture. He zips back to his junior high and high school years when music started to really become an important part of his life as well as what it was like growing up a Latino kid who was into punk and alternative.Segment 2In this segment, David continues with his experiences in college studying sculpture. He talks about getting his start as a DJ through friend he met in college, usurping a college radio program and transforming it into a Latin music station, mixed in with his wide-range of music sensibilities. He details his journey through graduating college and leaving for New York to pursue an art career, getting a job working at Irving Glass and infusing his art with Afro-Latin influence, and his moderate success in the industry. Around this time he began transitioning his career, working as a DJ with small gigs in bars and birthday parties sharing his reluctance for a typical nine-to-five work grind. He talks about getting first noticed and his first major gigs as a professional.Segment 3David opens up with a story about starting up a Latin organization at his college in order to bring in more Latin influence into the small community, how his niche in Cuban music helped create a name for himself and pushed his DJ career forward, transitioning from clubs to focusing on weddings and how he feels music can be an integral part of those experiences, learning to put the needs of the customers first. David gaining a love for those gigs because of his role in creating memorable moments for others, his business growing and gaining a reputation for his varied taste and personalized sets. He shares a few stories about the impactful interactions he's had with bookers over the years.Segment 4The final segment begins with Jeremiah and David discussing the factors in creating a successful independent business. David showcases his advertising strategies and the process of getting hired for his gigs. He goes into the importance of selling an ‘experience' over just a product, putting a lot of love into what you do and that showing through your work. David talks about his reluctance for using social media, Jeremiah countering with a few perspectives on how social media can promote a positive image and could lead to further growth for a business. Bringing about a major shift in teaching and learning might seem impossible in a large, urban school district. Processes tend to hold firm. But Ysleta Independent School District in southern Texas is bucking that pattern. Now in its fifth year of implementing a system-wide blended learning project, Ysleta ISD has transformed 10 campuses. Part of Ysleta's success stems from bold school principals, such as David Medina, the guest of our previous podcast (episode 13). But there's a second essential piece: support from the school district. In this episode, Heather Clayton Staker talks with Micha Villarreal, who served as David's district counterpart to support his efforts as he changed his school. Micha shares the view that "in education, we've not been doing what's right for kids for many, many years. Kids are all different. To grow our kids and allow them to be successful as adults, we have to change the work that we do." Micha explains how her district runs discovery sessions to help campus teams get unstuck as they innovate. Next week, Ready to Blend will post a resource to help you run your own discovery session with your team. You can find it, as well as all the other Tuesday Share resources that accompany each Ready to Blend podcast, at https://www.readytoblend.com/tuesdays.
If you walk into a Pasodale Elementary School classroom, you’ll see students scattered everywhere, each working on an independent or group objective. To someone unfamiliar with the model, it might look chaotic. But each student can explain what she’s working on and why. A growing number of teachers and principals want to make this shift. But how can they build it? How do they find the time? It takes considerable time to convert a traditional, teacher-led unit plan to a series of student-driven stations, tutorials, on-demand resources, projects, and assessments. Teachers are willing to do the work, but they simply need time. Our guest today is David Medina. For nine years, David has been the principal of Pasodale Elementary School in the Ysleta Independent School District located in El Paso, Texas, less than a mile from the border of Juarez, Mexico. Roughly 98 percent of his students are Hispanic, and 50 percent are English language learners. For years his school was mostly teacher centered, meaning that teachers led. He thought that blended learning meant giving children access to technology. “Little did I know that it really has zero to do with technology and more to do with having students be active learners,” David says. He realized four years ago that technology was not the answer; the answer was to shift from teacher-led to student-centered learning. In today’s interview, Heather Clayton Staker talks to David about how he freed up teachers’ time to allow them to build the new model. Of all the things he tried, David found that canceling after-school tutoring was the most successful. Instituting “Blended Rounds” every 90 days and weekly 90-minute planning meetings were crucial enablers as well. It takes time to build a student-centered model. But then, once in place, the new model gives back time because students are less dependent on their teachers. In other words, giving teachers time to build is an investment that more than breaks even. For a one-page visual about this podcast, go to www.readytoblend.com/blog. It will be available on 11/12/2019 as part of the regularly scheduled Tuesday Share program. Thanks Principal Medina for your stirring words! If you enjoyed this podcast, please leave a review. We'd be much obliged.

14. On this episode of SLEUTH, we are once again back to our Santa Ana, California courtroom front row seat, as the accessory to murder trial of Rachel Buffett comes to a close. Prosecutor Matt Murphy and Defense Counsel David Medina delivered powerful summations to the jury of twelve. Matt Murphy believes he has proven beyond any reasonable doubt that Rachel Buffett is guilty of lying to police and helping her fiancee Daniel Wozniak cover up for his murderous crimes. David Medina argued to jurors that this case should be considered “the poster case for reasonable doubt” believing that he put on a defense that proves Rachel had nothing to do with the murders. Medina goes one step further by suggesting Rachel Buffett helped police by cooperating in helping lead police to— as Medina suggests “a treasure trove of evidence” to help convict— the man he calls “the monster Daniel Wozniak". Both attorneys have now learned the members of the jury are unanimously in agreement as to a verdict. Have you made a determination on what the verdict will be? Let’s listen as the jury forewoman renders their decision. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers

13. This week we are back in a Santa Ana courtroom for our front row trial coverage of Rachel Buffett’s accessory to murder trial. Matt Murphy has prosecuted his case for nearly a week and is ready for his closing arguments. David Medina, Rachel’s defense counsel feels so confident he has presented plenty of reasonable doubt in the trial, that he doesn’t put on a single witness. Court spectators wondered whether Rachel herself would take the stand in her defense. After all, not more than a month before the trial, Rachel was presented an offer that included pleading guilty to a misdemeanor with no jail time. She turned it down and expressed wanting her day in court. So why did she tell the judge she didn’t think it was necessary she take the stand? Perhaps it will all make sense as we listen in to both Matt Murphy and David Medina’s closing arguments to jurors. Our Sleuth guest, Daniel Wozniak’s defense counsel Scott Sanders, returns to analyze the final summations from both counsel. Are you a truth seeker? If you are, then you will find a kindred soul in David Medina, who has dedicated his life to the pursuit of the Absolute Truth. It’s a subject that I, too, find immensely interesting, so let’s dive into this path of examining life, studying consciousness, and discovering the nature of our existence. Visit http://thetruthaboutliving.com/podcast/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: The meaning of Truth and why it’s important to be on this path to awakening What it means to distinguish between Absolute Truth and relative truth What ‘awakening’ truly is How to perceive that life is always going your way even after experiencing something painful Why we should embrace pain How to create ‘space’ in your life Key Takeaways: It’s not always pleasant to have truth as your highest value. When you are curious and wondering about this thing called life and existence, and you’re asking all these questions, your mind becomes still because you really don’t know. You keep on asking and you become so present that you get to appreciate what’s in front of you. Nothing is absolute and everything is relative. The world we live in is all relative and ever-changing, not the absolute. The absolute is absolutely nothing. The absolute is when you’re in complete silence. It’s in that space where nothing seems to be happening, nothing seems to be going on. But if you have the courage to stay there a bit longer in that space called ‘nothing’, if you look very carefully, that’s where you can find everything. Going on this path to awakening is not so much about being a witness of life and just witnessing what’s happening. It’s feeling life and being life itself. It’s feeling life’s complexities of feelings and emotions that are not always pleasant. And that’s the beauty of life, to feel the pain. Living life to the fullest is the biggest risk that you could ever take because it’s fully opening your heart to what life has to offer. In every experience, you’ve ever been through is gold, is wisdom, is something you can use, is pure life within you, and you get to choose how you want to relate to that and what you want to do with it. When you allow yourself to be with your pain, that’s a sign of self-love. When you acknowledge that life sucks, sometimes it feels like it sucks less. True change only happens when you embrace exactly who you are, when you embrace everything about yourself, even the things that you don’t like and don’t want to look at. It’s a lasting change because it’s a change that comes from freedom. Action Steps: Create a detachment to realize that you are not your thoughts and your feelings. You are before and beyond your thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Realize every single feeling you’ve ever felt in your life. Realize that it’s not about life happening to you but for you. Have a sense of wonder about the experience of being. Slow down and be curious about what life is. Thank you for listening! Quotes: “Truth is the absolute. It’s that which encapsulates everything, every relative truth. Because there are many layers from which we can just think and express but there’s only one Truth that is absolute.” -- David Medina “The easiest thing to take for granted is your own existence, your own life. Everything else is predicated upon that, including your own problems. So we slow down first, we take a deep breath, and we generally see that we are life on this planet, that we woke up today.” -- David Medina More from Bridgett Tulloh: Book your Breakthrough Coaching Session here Get the course: The Divine Way of Manifesting - 5 Simple Steps Watch & Subscribe on YouTube
