Very pleased to be joined by Katherine Dee aka default_friend for a conversation about the internet, online cliques and whether we can survive more of our lives moving online. Here is the link to her excellent school shooting piece I mentioned. https://contra.substack.com/p/mass-shootings-and-the-world-liberalism
I speak with Katherine about a bizarre, relatively new outgrowth of the American psyche, the phenomenon of the school shooter. Beyond the "we need fewer/more guns" debate, there is a numb silence about the worldview that fuels the actual motivations of these young men. They are labeled and put away in the monster pile. But could it be that, in some ways, they see further than we can? Katherine Dee is *the internet historian* bar none, and she's been doing some necessary spelunking in the neglected digital footprints of people like Adam Lanza, with startling results. According to Merriam-Webster, “pseudonymity” is the fact or state of being signed with a pseudonym, and a pseudonym is a fictitious name.Tasheme Thomas, also known to some as Default Friend, is an internet historian who talks about the difference between pseudonymity and anonymity She breaks down the history of pseudonymity throughout different time periods, from the start of authors writing books under fake names, to its evolving to people existing in various digital spaces under a false or different identity. She breaks down why people have reverted back to this way of disguising themselves.-The panel discussion took place on June 10, the second day of CoinDesk's Consensus 2022 festival in Austin, Texas. Today's chat is another one with my soul sister, Default Friend, with whom podding is always such a pleasure that we're going to start doing it more often. Make it a regular thing. The prompts for today include a piece in Countere, an always interesting digital magazine, about an online support group for people with homicidal ideation. Specifically mass-homicidal ideation - Mass Murderers Anonymous - followed by a response piece, to a response piece about a response to a film review, a meta-criticism (of a criticism of a criticism) of the downtown New York arts scene known as Dimes Square. The art created by the scene has mostly been contained to substacks and podcasts, apparently, which is also fitting. So this is just one more of those to add to the list. ——————————————————————“I Don't Like Mondays” by Tori Amos, 2001, courtesy of Atlantic Recordings.—————————————————————— Read the Countere article: Mass Murderers Anonymous: https://www.countere.com/home/mass-murderers-anonymous-how-recovery-groups-could-stop-the-next-mass-shooting, Crumps's piece: https://mcrumps.substack.com/p/my-own-dimes-square-fascist-humiliation/ and Default's piece about Crumps's piece:https://defaultfriend.substack.com/p/bad-anthropology—————————————————————— Today's episode is sponsored by Magic Mind Elixir! This week, my guest Katherine Dee and I discuss a couple of the topics that she has tackled in her writings over at her Default Friend blog. We discuss what she sees as a sexual counterrevolution coming our way. Katherine writes, "If there's one drum I've been beating for a minute now, it's that I believe the pendulum with sexuality is going to swing, big time. And seriously, if you guys remember me for anything, have it be this." We dive right into that, and I think it helps bridge us to our discussion on the dark nihilism that pervades our culture and leads to these terrible mass shootings we keep seeing. The Left likes to focus on guns because they understand it won't actually do any good. The Right, in reaction to that, wants the band-aid of arming teachers and/or providing more security. When nobody wants to discuss the rot within our culture, nothing will ever be done. Where does this empty nihilism come from? Katherine believes that it is the modern American enlightenment tradition of liberalism. EPISODE 9: Katie Kahn joins me to critique Alex Lee Moyer's new documentary on Alex Jones, Alex's War. She attempts to convince me that it doesn't go deep enough and largely succeeds. We also chat about dissident culture, inevitably gossiping about Red Scare, which is like the Godwin's Law of 2022.Topics include:Katie's personal knowledge of Bohemian Grove.Alex Jones' strange cast of supporting characters including protege Owen Shroyer and chief bullhorn operator Ali Alexander. The stories the documentary omits, like Alex's supplement shilling, alcoholism, new wife, recent divorce, and legal framing as a “performance artist.” Comparisons to Netflix's Get Me Roger Stone, which explored Stone's penchant for orgies.NYC and San Francisco reuniting after decades of cultural separation. Osama bin Laden and why we had foreknowledge about 9/11 before it happened (Also mis-stating that Dar Es Salaam is in Sudan; it's in Tanzania.)Werner Herzog's ability to reveal complex characters by letting the camera linger, and why Alex's War doesn't do that. Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza's ridiculous intellectual justifications: “efilism” and “eulavism” as discussed by Default Friend.Sam Hyde's recent massive trolling of YouTube dork iDubbbz.Peter Thiel peoples' transformation from the khaki-wearing uncool kids of San Francisco to the edgy culture warriors of NYC.Follow Katie Kahn on Twitter or Substack. Today's episode is haute cuisine, the chef's special, a rare delicacy — well, hopefully, not too rare — with writer Katherine Dee (@default_friend), my content creation spirit animal. We've converged here thanks in no small part to a recent piece in the Atlantic entitled, What do Femcels Really Want? But we end up talking about all kinds of things, of course, from the class and geographic factors of the sexual marketplace, to hack journalism, to the odd allure of TikTok recipes, and much, much more. Today's guest is "Default Friend," an internet personality who writes about internet culture and digital communities. Our discussion starts by using the recent Taylor Lorenz controversy regarding her story on Libs of TikTok to launch into a broader discussion of how the internet and tech are reported on, and why there's a one-dimensional focus on fear mongering or trend analysis in media coverage of internet culture and digital communities. We then broaden our conversation to the different eras of the internet and its evolution through time, including the cultural effects of digital communities migrating from one platform to the next, the reversal of the sex-positive movement online, and why big tech vs. crypto vs. luddites may soon replace the culture wars. It's a fascinating glimpse into the past and the future of the internet which highlights the increasing convergence between the internet and “real life”. Hosted by Marshall Kosloff and produced by Jackson Steger

We spoke with writer, podcaster, and advice columnist Default Friend about our modern dating difficulties, the psychodramas that keep us from achieving real intimacy, and the unexamined role microblogging sites like Tumblr played in shaping a generation's sexuality and normalizing a culture of extreme sensitivity and offense-taking. Default Friend and the Personality Girl are stoked to welcome the inimitable Paul Skallas, aka the LindyMan, to After the Orgy, where they have a wide-ranging conversation about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, tech, strivers, Adderall, young adult literature, parenting, and everyone's favorite topic: women under 25.Theme: Lindy by Kenny Chesney

Contestants: Internet personality "Default Friend," Trey Kelso, Tom Colocci College football, DC Comics, The Office, Wicca, and Donny Osmond are all on the syllabus of an episode bookended, for no particular reason, by the works of Stephen King. Come for the realization that your favorite '80s one-hit wonder also wrote your favorite '90s Disney song; stay for the cautionary tale of what happens when you doodle a drag queen at the wrong moment (not a metaphor); savor hearing me recite the full title of "Marat/Sade" off the top of my head, because that's the kind of person I am.
