Stills has been a respected, well-known staple within the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for the past 20 years, and on Jan. 1, 2022, she took over as commissioner -- becoming the first female commissioner in the conference's history, as well as the first female commissioner of a Division I HBCU conference. With a proven track record of accountability, efficiency, and passion, Stills has risen through the ranks within the MEAC, beginning with her tenure at the conference in October 2002. Stills has made a name for herself among her peers and other industry professionals for her never-ending dedication to the conference and its student-athletes, ability to grow and innovate, organization, team-first mentality, and goal-achieving initiative. In January 2021, Stills was promoted to Chief of Staff/Chief Operating Officer of the MEAC. In her new role, she ensures that the Commissioner is carrying out the strategic objectives of the Council of Chief Executive Officers and the Delegate Assembly. Stills was the lead on all hiring, strategic and long-range planning, re-branding, and marketing, NCAA Name, Image and Likeness (NIL), conference budget, the renewal of the MEAC Basketball Tournament with the City of Norfolk, and all special events and activities. Stills also created the MEAC's Esports program, a new, cutting-edge initiative that began in the summer of 2020, as the conference and world continued to deal with the progression of the COVID-19 pandemic. She took charge as the Director of Esports, serving as the key driver in developing regulations for the MEAC Esports Community and developing the MEAC's esports strategy. Her goal has been to enhance awareness of the MEAC's esports initiative by working with industry business leaders to encourage growth. Much like overseeing the addition of Esports to the MEAC's portfolio, Stills looks to enter a new tenure for the conference while continuing to bolster the respect, traditions, and love of the MEAC. She looks to deepen the communication with the member institutions, alumni, fans, and community, to express the strong desire and support for the success and sustainability of the Conference that transparently articulates its vision and strategy. The intention is to create a collaborative process in which the “new vision” for the MEAC is a shared vision that is all-inclusive athletically and academically. Before her appointment to Chief of Staff/Chief Operating Officer, Stills served as the Senior Associate Commissioner for Administration and Compliance (June 2012-21), Assistant Commissioner for Administration and Compliance (July 2008-12), Executive Assistant to the Commissioner (July 2006-08), Senior Woman Administrator (June 2006-2021) and Director of Compliance (October 2002-08). Prior to being named Commissioner, Stills elevated overall brand visibility for the MEAC. She negotiated over $683,000 in corporate partnership monies by working with major companies such as: iHeartRadio, US Marines, Home Depot, Hampton Roads Transit, JT Fisher Funeral Home, Priority Automotive, ESI, TowneBank, Glenmede Financials, House-Autry, CurtMont Food Services and Harley Davison. She assisted in negotiating a contract with Nike that brought over $9 million to member institutions. She operates with the financial interests of the conference; its member institutions and student-athletes are at the forefront for her. She designed and implemented the Athletic Eligibility Certification Review to assist institutions in preparing for the NCAA Academic Progress Program (APP) Data Review. She managed the budgets for the Conference Grant, Student-Athlete Opportunity Fund and Special Assistant Fund. She was instrumental in developing the MEAC Strategic and Long-Range Plan in December 2008, along with securing global creative agency 160over90 as the marketing company for the MEAC in 2020. In 2022, she oversaw the update of MEAC Strategic and Long-Range Plan. As the Senior Associate Commissioner, Stills provided supervision for Conference staff, including Compliance, Championship, Media Relations, Finance, Corporate Partnerships, Multimedia/Marketing, Digital & Video and administrative support staff. She took the helm and managed the operations of the Conference Office in the absence of the Commissioner, coordinated all ancillary events of the Conference (i.e., Football Press Luncheon, Basketball Tournament Tip-Off Banquet, Cheerleading Championship, Pre-Season Basketball Press Luncheon, etc.) and Mid-Winter, Spring and Summer Conference meetings. During the conference basketball tournaments, Stills provided guidance and insight while monitoring the NCAA Academic Progress Program (APP) for member institutions to implement the APP Seminar with NCAA Academic and Membership Staff. She also provided administrative support to the Commissioner for the Council of Chief Executive Officers and Executive Committee and conducted conference compliance workshops, reviews, and spot checks to ensure compliance with Conference and NCAA rules and regulations. She served as liaison to the conference's Compliance Coordinators, Athletics Academic Support staff, Alumni Directors and Constitution and Bylaws committees, as well as assisting with other conference committees. Under Stills' guidance as the Assistant Commissioner for Administration, she coordinated the MEAC Cheerleading Championship — the only HBCU collegiate cheerleading championship. During her time as the Executive Assistant to the Commissioner, Stills provided direct support to the Commissioner, administrative support to the Commissioner for the Council of Chief Executive Officers and Executive Committee, managed the day-to-day operations and administration of the conference office, assisted the Commissioner by executing initiatives and special projects, evaluated functions, practices and the efficiency of facilities, and evaluated staff performance while providing leadership and guidance for personnel. As the Senior Woman Administrator, Stills continued to work in conjunction with the senior leadership team within the MEAC regarding women's issues and other issues that affect the membership. She coordinated the Senior Woman Administrators' Women in Athletics Professional Development Workshop, coordinated the selection of the MEAC Woman of the Year and served as the liaison to member institutions' senior woman administrators. AT HAMPTON UNIVERSITY Before arriving at the MEAC, Stills served as Hampton University's Coordinator of Athletic Academic Support for four years, and for three of those years, she was appointed Senior Woman Administrator. While at Hampton, she created the university's first Athletic Academic Support Program and implemented the CHAMPS/LifeSkills Program. She provided academic advising, counseling, and assistance to student-athletes in areas of course selection, registration procedures, degree requirements, career planning, university resources and other related topics associated with academic performance for all sports programs. While serving as Senior Woman Administrator, Stills served as the highest-ranking female on the senior leadership team regarding the administration of the athletics department. She coordinated student-athlete and corporate partner banquets and events, oversaw the supervision of the cheerleading program, and assisted in coordinating event management during home football and basketball games with gameday operations, marketing, and will-call. A 1993 graduate of Old Dominion University, Stills earned her bachelor's degree in Human Services Counseling. While a student, she earned the Virginia Campus Outreach Opportunity League (VA COOL) Catalyst Award for creating a week-long community outreach program for the university. In addition, she served on the university's President's Advisory Committee on Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action and Diversity. In 1996, she received a Master of Arts in Counseling (College Student Work Personnel) from Hampton University. She would later go on to graduate from the Sports Management Institute in 2002 and the NACWAA/HERS Institute for Administrative Advancement in 2008. PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS Stills holds current memberships in the National Association for Athletics Compliance (NAAC), National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A), Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA), Women Leaders for College Sports (WLS), National Association of Esports Coaches and Directors(NAECAD), and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She also serves as a substitute for the MEAC representative to the NCAA Division I Council. Tina: We have been so busy lately because we've been involved in a very important event. You know, every fall the Florida Education Association hosts its annual meeting called the Delegate Assembly, or the DA as some call it. At this event hundreds upon hundreds of members unite to discuss important education issues and policies. They elect leaders and set and organizational path for the future. Educators also take time to recognize important events. So, Luke, I'd like to open this episode by saying congratulations for 20 plus one years of merger. Luke: Congratulations indeed. It really is a big deal. Let me give a little history lesson for the listeners that might not know that FEA used to be two separate unions of educators. Following years of competition between both organizations, the FEA United and FTP, the Florida Teaching Profession NEA, they decided it would be smarter to begin working together instead of against one another. After years of talk, the two unions merged into one much larger and more powerful organization in the year 2000. Tina: And now 20 plus one years later the FEA is considered the largest labor union in the South, representing public school teachers throughout Florida. We've accomplished a lot since 2000, and we firmly stood together through adversity and some challenging times. Our success is directly related to our strong leadership. Luke: To the newly elected leadership: Congratulations! And I guess where I want to start is at some point, everybody was just an infant in their union journey. Right? But before you even become a delegate or a local leader or a state leader, you make a decision to become involved in your local union. So share with us why did you decide to get involved in your local union in the first place? And President Spar I'll start with you. Andrew Spar, President of FEA: First and foremost, I grew up in New York, just outside of New York City. And my mom was a teacher and a member of the Yonkers Federation of Teachers. And so, it was just kind of in me, that when you come into the profession, you join your union. And so that's what I did. Right when we started out in the new teacher orientation, I joined, and about two years later in Volusia, they were offering, the district was saying, “well, all we got money for is a 1% raise.” And the steward, is what we call them in Volusia, the building rep. But the steward at the school, her husband was really ill, and so she was not able to be at school all the time.

Joyce Farr is a fervent advocate for all educators, students and in particular, language minority students. A multilingual ESL professional, teaching middle and high school students, she has been involved in various levels of the association at the county and state level, political canvassing for pro-education candidates and social justice activism. She currently serves on the NJEA Minority and Leadership Recruitment Committee and Women in Education Committee, and served on the NEA Resolutions Committee as an Alternate and the NJTESOL/NJBE Executive Board. She is also one of NJEA's Equity Alliance cadre of trainers from the 2017 cohort and is involved with social justice and immigrant justice groups to promote diversity, equity and inclusion. Angel Santiago is an elementary school teacher at Loring Flemming Elementary school in Blackwood, New Jersey. Santiago is the 2020-2021 New Jersey State Teacher of the Year. His passion for education is rooted in fostering strong relationships with his students, their families, his colleagues, and the communities in which he serves. About Our Guest: Chrissy Kosar Christine Kosar has worked for over 14 years in the Washington Township School District as a bus driver and continues to demonstrate a long history of public and community service. It’s is a job she loves, allowing her to improve the lives of others through public service. As the President of the Washington Township Schools Supportive Services Personnel Association, Christine Kosar worked tirelessly to ensure equity in the workplace and other quality of life issues for Education Support Professionals (ESPs), including advocating for fair wages and labor practices. Christine helped organize numerous campaigns around standardized testing, pension reform, and privatization, among many others. Christine Kosar has worked with Save Our Schools NJ, NJ Working Families, DivestNJ, Greenpeace, League of Women Voters, and ACLU. During her work, Christine formed a network of allies that include Governor Phil Murphy, who personally extended an invitation for her to attend the 2019 Budget Address, due to Christine’s efforts to gain job protections for Education Support Professionals (ESPs). Throughout Christine Kosar’s career as a bus driver, elected union leader, and community activist, she has earned a reputation as a progressive fighter, bringing a proven philosophy of leadership and respect for the people! Her core beliefs include working for greater racial, social, and economic justice in NJ. She believes that decisions should be made by ethics and not money; it is time to return the decision-making to the communities they impact. Her involvement with NJ21 United has seen Christine elevate the voice of ESP’s to the front of the teams’ work within Public Education and community issues. Christine has given testimony at various State committees, worked to divest Public Employee pensions from fossil fuels and continues her work with the D.A.W.A. team towards enhanced employee rights. During the current Covid pandemic Christine worked closely with the NJEA to utilize vital PRIDE funding for food challenged students and families. Her professional relationship with her district and superintendent allowed her to secure the purchasing of perishable food items, through her district. This ensured local food banks were being supplied continuously up until the end of the summer. A product of public schools, Tom is a graduate of Cherokee High School in Marlton, NJ and earned his bachelor's degree in Mathematics from The College of New Jersey. In 2002 Tom earned his master's degree in Education from Nova Southeastern University. For the past 20 years, Tom has been a high school math teacher at Lenape High School in Burlington County. At the school he also serves as the advisor to the Gender Sexuality Alliance club, is the math department coordinator, and trains new staff in the Research for Better Teaching program. In 2006 Tom was awarded the N.J. Center for Science, Technology & Mathematics Education Center from Kean University. Two years later he was the Lenape Regional High School District Teacher of the year. Tom has a passion for not only teaching math but understanding and implementing strategies and research about educational practices in his classroom. During the past 20 years, Tom has served his local by being a building vice president, association representative, and is currently serving as a member at large on the executive board. Tom has also served as Secretary of the Burlington County Education Association, was a member of NJEA's Election Committee, and has been the chairperson of NJEA's Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Committee for over a decade. In his free time, Tom enjoys the outdoors, traveling the world with his husband, and is an avid game show fan. Tom and his husband are active in their church, enjoy discussions about the intersection of religion and sexuality, and recently became licensed to be foster parents in the state of New Jersey. Andersen, a high school American Sign Language (ASL) teacher at Ocean City High School in Cape May County, has been named the 2018 New Jersey State Teacher of the Year. Andersen, who was named the 2017-18 Cape May County Teacher of the Year in the spring, grew up in Cape May County. She earned a bachelor’s degree in flute performance from Indiana University and a mas- ter’s degree in deaf education from McDaniel College. Andersen also achieved national board certification in Exceptional Needs Specialist: Deaf/Hard of Hearing. After nine years in Boston, Massachusetts as a teacher of the deaf, she returned to New Jersey in 2004 to raise a family. It was then, with 42 students, that Andersen began the ASL program at Ocean City High School. Community oriented activities, such as ASL socials at local coffee shops and evening performances that raise funds for scholarships immerse students in deaf culture helping them to build confidence. In the past three years alone, more than 85 percent of her students have achieved the NJ Seal of Biliteracy. Her popular and respected program has inspired a number of students to pursue ASL-related careers, including interpreting for Michelle Obama and Madonna. Ocean City’s ASL program is unique, especially in the way Andersen connects her students to the deaf community nationwide. Ocean City has become a strong community that is now accessible to hearing and deaf visitors because of Andersen’s students. Andersen is a nationally recognized educator who began her career teaching deaf children to fall in love with reading. She now teaches hearing children to fall in love with ASL. Among her many recognitions, Andersen was named the 2014 ASL Teacher of the Year and was honored by the New Jersey Association for the Deaf and Atlantic County Society for the Deaf. In 2015, “Classroom Close-Up NJ” highlighted her program after her students’ ASL anti-bullying video went viral. As Ocean City’s Teacher of the Year, Andersen was featured in the NJ School Board Association’s School Leader and was recently honored by the National Liberty Museum with the Teacher as Hero: Exceptional Teacher Award. Andersen has made a difference in the lives of her students, and she serves as a model for teachers throughout the country. She ignites her students’ passion for learning, gives them a voice and shows them their voice is valuable. Andersen’s students go out into the world as lifelong learners making bridges between cultures, embracing differences in those around them, and changing lives as they go. Throughout her time at Point Beach, Joanna has served as a class advisor, cheerleading coach, drama club advisor, talent show director, track timer, QSAC committee member, and an Intervention and Referral Services advocate, Joanna has led staff workshops in her district, and has worked with administrators on the school planning team. Joanna is currently serving her district as the Point Pleasant Beach Education Association President, and this is her third term in that position. Prior to her presidency, she served the Association as the Secretary and Negotiations Chairperson. She is also an Ambassador for Seesaw and Espark, and she received her certification as an Apple Certified educator. Joanna is the chairperson of the Christian Education Committee at her church, and she sings on the church Praise Team. She also tends bar at the legendary Stone Pony year-round. Mrs. Douglas resides with her husband and four dogs in Point Pleasant Boro. She loves to bake, sing, and shop in her free time. “Being a teacher has given me purpose in life. In this episode, Lain interviews Mike Walsh about his background, why he became involved in public education and what the future holds for California schools. Walsh is the former President of the California School Boards Association, a group representing nearly 1,000 California school districts and county offices of education. A seven-year veteran of the Butte County Office of Education Board, Walsh was elected to CSBA’s Delegate Assembly in 2010 and elected to the organization’s Board of Directors in 2011. Walsh is a 1982 graduate of Las Plumas High School where he says he recorded perfect attendance while distinguishing himself in track and field, wrestling, football and student government. In 2015, Walsh co-founded Beacon Results, an organizational growth and change management firm that works primarily with school districts and nonprofits to help them develop and align on their strategic plans. Jennifer Skomial, like many others in the profession, has always wanted to be a teacher. Her earliest memories include “playing school” with her younger brother, whom she needed to bribe to have a willing student. Not a day went by that she wasn’t eagerly practicing what she believes has been her life’s purpose. Jennifer is driven to encourage more students to go into the teaching field that she holds so dear. While many of the students she works with may not become early-childhood teachers, she knows that the exposure she provides them through hands-on experience in the on-site preschool, field trips, and guest speakers will help them determine their future paths. We’re talking about rural Veterans and their families. We’re having that conversation with Carter Florence, the Director of Strategy and Impact with Meals on Wheels America, and David Albright, the Hill Crest Endowed Chair in Mental Health with the University of Alabama School of Social Work. Both Carter and David are 2018-2019 Rural Health Fellows with the National Rural Health Association (NRHA), where they focused on rural Veteran policy, culminating in a Policy Paper presented to and adapted by the NRHA Rural Health Congress. “When we really understand the complexity of the community, we can identify the levers that can be pulled to create opportunities for improving health holistically.” Carter is a problem solver and proficient in developing, implementing, and managing strategies and solutions that leverage community assets and readiness for health improvement. With a strong record of forging and developing relationships with diverse individuals and strategic partners for system-level approaches to public health, Carter accomplishes community engagement by utilizing theory-based and evidence-informed practices while implementing solutions for dynamic population level health problems. She has an outstanding academic, professional, educational, and community-based practice background in the United States, with an emphasis in rural Appalachia. “I worry a little bit about rural health and rural veterans being overly politicized…” As Director of Strategy and Impact at Meals on Wheels America, Carter provides direction and organizational support for facilitation of strategic plans as well as evaluation of current programs. She serves as a subject matter expert on in-home safety and fall prevention for older adults, and manages the Helping Homebound Heroes grant project. Carter also oversees the development of internal data streams. David is a military Veteran and former research fellow with both the Department of Veterans Affairs and the RAND Corporation’s Center for Military Health Policy Research. Dr. Albright works to produce research that is useful for communities, Veterans Service Organizations, health care providers, and policymakers as they work to address and improve health and wellness-related determinants and outcomes among military personnel, Veterans, and their families. The Governor of Alabama appointed Dr. Albright to both the Alabama Executive Veterans Network, in which he serves as the Education and Research committee chair, and to the Alabama Opioid Overdose and Addiction Council, in which he serves as the Community Engagement chair. He also leads a state task force to identify and develop recommendations for the Alabama Veteran population on opioid addiction and treatment, both within and outside of the Veterans Health Administration health care system. Dr. Albright holds an appointment on the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Committee on the Well-Being of Military Families, and currently serves both on the Rural Veterans Task Force and Health Equity Council. He serves as a rural social work consultant to the National Association of Social Workers; serves as the Delegate of the Delegate Assembly for the NASW, Alabama Chapter; and is on the Board of Directors for both the Alabama Rural Health Association and the Alabama Rural Health Coalition for the Homeless.

Dr. Peggy Lynam has been practicing as a physical therapist for 36 years and currently is an Associate professor in the DPT program at Long Island University- Brooklyn, N.Y. Dr Lynam is a Board certified clinical specialist in neurologic physical therapy, and in addition to her faculty role, she maintains a part-time home health practice, providing service mainly to geriatric adults with neurologic conditions. In this episode, we discuss: -Peggy’s involvement in the APTA and NYPTA -What is the APTA’s House of Delegates? -The many ways to be an active member of the APTA -How students can seek mentorship opportunities within state and national associations -And so much more! Becoming involved in any association position can be rewarding and enriching. From Peggy’s experience, “Each role seemed the best role for me at that point in my professional life and my personal life.” Specifically, if you are interested in broader policy solutions, being involved in the Association’s House of Delegates keeps you at the forefront of the issues within the profession. Peggy found that, “The best thing about serving in the house is you are a part of contributing to what the association is going to be doing, how we are moving forward and how we are influencing the profession to move forward.” The American Physical Therapy Association is foundational to the success of the profession. Peggy stresses, “We promote the profession.
