Join Raheel Ahmad & Qayyum Rashid for Thursday's show from 4-6pm where we will be discussing: Disability benefits and Fair Finance Disability benefits The UK government is planning major reductions to disability benefits as part of wider welfare reforms intended to manage rising costs. These cuts could lead to greater financial hardship, limited access to essential support, and disproportionately impact individuals with mental health conditions, especially those relying on Personal Independence Payments (PIP). Fair Finance Must we accept the poor service high street banks provide us? Why is it so much harder to get your money out of a bank than put it in? Why do banks make it so hard to borrow from them? These are some of the questions we would like to discuss as we look into whether there are fairer ways to finance. Join us between 5 and 6 as we go on to consider who our current banking system is excluding and what can be done to make it more accessible. Guests: Ismail Kaji (Parliamentary & Government Officer at Mencap) Fazilet Hadi (Head of policy at Disabilty rights UK) Helen Handzel (Sector Liaison Manager at StepChange) Emma Franklin-Keogh (Head of People and Compliance at Clockwise) Tom Woodroof (Co-founder of Mutual Credit Services) Producers: Rabeeta Khan, Maheda Neesir and Nabeela Shah

In this episode of the Friends for Life Podcast, we dive into the looming threats to Medicaid and what they could mean for individuals with developmental disabilities. With Republicans set to take control in Washington, disability advocates are raising alarms about proposals to reshape Medicaid through measures like block grants and work requirements. These changes could undermine the nation's system of home and community-based services (HCBS), leaving many vulnerable individuals and families without essential support. We explore the potential impact of these proposals on a system already under strain. With nearly 700,000 people on waiting lists for Medicaid waivers and widespread staffing shortages in disability services, the stakes couldn't be higher. Our discussion highlights the stories and concerns of advocates like Nicole Jorwic and Kim Musheno, who are fighting to preserve and strengthen Medicaid to ensure that individuals with disabilities can live independently and with dignity. Join us as we examine the critical importance of Medicaid, the challenges facing the HCBS program, and the call for action to defend and expand these services. Whether you're a caregiver, advocate, or simply want to understand how these policy changes could affect millions of lives, this episode is a must-listen.

We discuss how one of his friends thinks everyone should mask, even if vaccinated, while another thinks once vaccinated you shouldn't have to wear a mask. These opinions are more nuanced within the disability community, given various health concerns that wearing/not wearing a mask might complicate. We go into how the isolation has hidden those who are struggling from others, and have left some forgotten. We hope this episode can be a motivator to think critically about what you can do to reconnect with others in your community, in particular those who may have been pushed to the sidelines in the midst of the pandemic.

During my working years I always paid for Disability Insurance to make sure I was covered. Back in the days I had heard many stories of people who had freak accidents and were out of work for quite a while and needed the Disability Insurance to help maintain their living expenses for their family. Insurance is a part of protecting yourself and family in case of an accident and can help with your Financial Freedom goals. Think if you were out of work for a long time without a paycheck because you fell off the roof while hanging Christmas Lights than you may have to use your up your savings for money to live on. That could possibly set you back a while from your projected Financial Freedom date or Retirement date. This is an important lesson to cover with our boys. Even though they may not be in their career for years we want them to know the importance of protecting themselves financially. I know of one family that their lifestyle was really hurt when their main breadwinner had a Heart Attack and didn’t have any Disability Insurance. He was self-employed, I think. As always, I am not giving you any Insurance or Financial Advice and you should seek advice from your Professional Insurance and other Advisors to see what is best for your situation. The session in which we chat with LaChan V Hannon about mothering her two children and helping them learn to navigate white spaces, such as school and the classroom. LaChan is the School of Education Certification Officer at The College of New Jersey and Executive Director of Greater Expectations Teaching and Advocacy Center. She is a PhD candidate in teacher education and teacher development at Montclair State University. Her scholarly work focuses on the intersectionality of race, disability and parent involvement. Her TEDx Talk entitled Young, Gifted & Black with Autism was released in 2016. PostScript: We held our podcast interview with LaChan before the coronavirus took hold here this Spring. Recently, we asked her for an update regarding some of her thoughts at this time. She told us this: "Just as there is nothing predictable about what is happening right now in society, there is nothing predictable about Black mothering during a quarantine. My daughter loves online instruction and my son, with Autism, misses his friends and being at school. We are all creating a NEW normal both for schooling as well as daily life co-habitating. Daily check-ins are absolutely necessary to get a pulse on what we are all all experiencing. Now more than ever, it is important for us to hold fast to our family beliefs which are (1) we are in community with one another and have an obligation to each other, (2) we honor our word and do what we said we would do, and (3) we all make mistakes and can ask for forgiveness"

In this episode of finding grace I am joined by Jordan Bach, who is a life coach, motivational speaker, blogger, certified yoga and meditation teacher. Ranked as one of 40 of the most accomplished leaders under 40 by advocate magazine, he co-hosted the television series ‘The secret guide to being fabulous’ as the life coach. As someone who was openly gay since the age of 12 he champions LGBTQ rights, and consults with major corporations on this. I discovered Jordan’s work on social media and loved it, so we connected and its was great to have him on the show, and to share his message. In this episode Jordan shares his take on what finding grace means to him, we talk about sharing the messy truth and how we can use this to elevate people rather make it a negative thing. Why its important stop focusing on being perfect, but to show up and be yourself he believes it’s our humanness that heals not our perfection. We delve into the world of meditation and the ones he created and the story behind him creating them. His shares tools for tuning into your gut wisdom and the best ways to shift yourself when feeling funky, and we both share our love of a cold shower and the benefits of it.
