Joining us this week is Joshua Blakemore, CVPM, RVT, FFCP of Onion River Animal Hospital in Burlington, Vermont to talk about what it really takes to prepare the next generation of veterinary technicians not just for graduation but for the day-to-day demands of clinical practice. Josh is a standout practice manager and longtime technician advocate who was recently named VHMA's Practice Manager of the Year, but Josh is a humble person who has never lost touch with where he started: in the kennel, working his way up with persistence and purpose. Listen as we unpack the often overlooked disconnect between academic training and real-world application, getting candid about the gaps that we have witnessed in new technician graduates - from handling basics like restraint and jugular draws to dealing with complex procedures with confidence. Josh shares what he's doing at his hospital (and beyond) to help ensure that today's students become tomorrow's professionals, including his involvement in college advisory boards and his commitment to skill-driven externships. We also explore some broader challenges in technician education from the uneven quality of online programs to the really surprising ways that some hospitals may unintentionally stifle growth. With firsthand experiences, practical insights, and a clear call for mentorship, Josh sheds some light on the kind of support that vet techs really need not just to survive but also to thrive in the profession. It's all about making sure that they stay, grow, and succeed once they arrive. Show Notes: [3:01] - Josh made note of Vermont's lack of licensure requirements and worked to improve tech training in hospitals. [13:22] - Hands-on skills help students stay in the field, offering them more confidence. [16:04] - Josh loves training and creating roles to help employees professionally grow. We weigh the advantages and disadvantages of private lessons, group classes, and board and train programs, making sure you get the most personalized advice. Would you like to go on?Will Bangura M.S. CBCC-KA (00:38.106)Good day dog lovers. I'm Will Van Gura. Thanks for joining me for another episode of dog training today. We really appreciate you. We love all your support. Today I want to talk about different dog training options. You know, whether it be you needing or wanting to train a young puppy or you training an older dog, there are different options. You know, some of the most common options are sending your dog away.for training, what a lot of people call board and train or doggy bootcamp, having private lessons or going to a group class. So I just want to talk a little bit about the pros and cons of all of those. Now, the first thing that I want to say is that I believe, especially, especially when you're starting brand new training with a dog that knows little to nothing, that getting private one -on -one trainingthe best option for every dog and for every pet parent. if you've got a dog that has problems in the home, nuisance behaviors like potty training issues, jumping, barking, digging, being destructive, again, having private lessons is great. Now, if you've got a lot of those nuisance behaviors at your home, private lessons are best done there, at your home.and not done at the trainer's facility if they have one or meeting them in a park. Now I'm not saying that that's a bad way to go. Again, private one -on -one training I think is the best thing because you the pet parent get the undivided attention of that trainer without them having to divide their attention with other pet parents, with other dogs. And that leads me into group training classes.because a lot of people want to opt for group training classes because in many cases they're more affordable than private one -on -one training and group classes Support the Show.If you need professional help please visit my Dog Behaviorist website.Go here for Free Dog Training Articles

This episode is focused on the Royal Canadian Air Force's (RCAF) modernization effort to enhance its fleet of CF-18 Hornet fighter aircraft. The $1.3 billion (CAD) project to upgrade the CF-18 Hornet fleet is meant to ensure Canada's fighter fleet remains capable of responding to threats until new jets acquired under the Future Fighter Capability Project (FFCP) reaches Operational Capability. You'll hear my guest and I refer to FFCP in our discussion -- that platform will be the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. The upgrade effort is known as the Hornet Extension Project, or HEP for short. It is required to keep the CF-18 fleet interoperable and compliant with aviation regulations, and to maintain operational parity with current threats. The Hornet Extension Project will see upgrades to all CF-18's in the fleet, and that includes jets that were acquired from the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) under the Interim Fighter Capability Project (IFCP).The Hornet Extension Project will have two Phases.HEP 1 focuses primarily on interoperability and regulatory upgrades for all CF-18's.HEP 2 is a further enhancement that will see 36 jets configured as the most capable fighters in the Royal Canadian Air Force.HEP 2 upgrades include a new radar, advanced weapons capability, enhanced survivability, and mission support and security requirements which are primarily required to support new weapons for the CF-18.This upgrade effort is being conducted in conjunction with the United States Marine Corps, who are also upgrading their legacy Hornet fleet.Joining me to talk about all of this is Royal Canadian Air Force Brigadier-General Todd Balfe, who manages the Hornet Extension Project. The General puts context into the modernization, so we thank him for his time, and for his kindness.Go Bold!

Just because a dog is wearing a muzzle does not mean they are a bad dog! Listen to professional dog trainer, Laura Gendron, CPDT-KA, LFDM, FFCP, dispel the stigma associated with muzzle wearing by educating us about muzzle positivity! Laura shares a plethora of reasons why muzzling is beneficial such as during medical recovery (an alternative to the "cone of shame"), preventing the ingestion of inappropriate objects like rocks, and the ability to safely forge new friendships. Laura discusses the various types of muzzles available and the importance of proper fit. However, the big take home message is how to positively and properly introduce your dog to the muzzle so it's not an anxiety-inducing or potentially dangerous process for you or your pet. Proactively training your dog to embrace their muzzle may become imperative in a variety of situations, for example vet visits, even if your dog has never had a bite history. Communication is at the heart of any relationship. So much of a healthy relationship depends on being able to communicate our thoughts, feelings, needs, and desires to the people we love. This isn't always easy, of course- wires get crossed, words get misunderstood. And all of this gets even harder when one of us isn't human. We love our pets and we think (or at least hope) that they love us as well. But how can we be sure when we can't speak the same language? Is it even possible for us to have authentic communication with our animal friends? Pat Blocker joined me today to talk about this very issue. A lifelong animal lover, Pat has always had a desire to communicate with pets. Now, in her capacities as both a dog trainer and a certified animal communicator, she does just that. Join us as we discuss how we can communicate better with animals, and what we can learn simply by paying attention.

Over a hundred years ago, The Boeing Company became a key partner in the Canadian aerospace industry. Since that time, Boeing has grown to become a leader in the Canadian aerospace industry with 12 locations across the country supporting Boeing's commercial and defence industries. As our listeners would know, Boeing is one of the contenders for the Future Fighter Capability Project (FFCP), in which the Government of Canada is looking to acquire 88 advanced fighter jets to provide the capability the Canadian Armed Forces needs to ensure the safety and security of Canadians and meet its international obligations. This is the most significant investment for the Royal Canadian Air Force in more than 30 years. You can learn more about Boeing's offering for the FFCP here

CDR’s Ottawa Bureau Chief, James Careless, recently sat down – virtually – with the Minister of National Defence for the CDR Radio Podcast. As you might expect, the conversation naturally covered the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine, pushing ahead with defence procurements such as CSC and FFCP, and keeping DND running, despite a global pandemic. Here is our in-depth conversation with the Minister. This podcast is sponsored by General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada – a proud partner of the Canadian Army for over 40 years.
