Kennedy, its all-star cast includes Jeff Bridges, John Huston, Anthony Perkins, Eli Wallach, Richard Boone, Toshirō Mifune, Sterling Hayden, Dorothy Malone, Belinda Bauer, Ralph Meeker, Elizabeth Taylor, Berry Berenson and Susan Walden. The film simplifies the plot of the book somewhat, emphasizing humor. "MARY BETH HUGHES - CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" - 3/03/2025 For those of you who don't know the charms of MARY BETH HUGHES, when she was under contract at MGM, she was dubbed "the poor man's LANA TURNER." It was a rather unfair assessment since MGM gave Lana all the plum roles, and Mary Beth got her hand-me-downs. But still, Mary Beth had great comic chops, and no one played bitchy, hard-boiled blondes as well as she. Despite her beauty and talent, she never managed to get out of B-pictures. She did have small parts in great films like The Women (1939) and The Ox-Bow Incident (1942). She played the good girl as often as she played the bad girl, but when she played bad....you were in for a treat. Her pouty lips, snappy dialogue, and petulant attitude lit up many a lackluster production. This week, we celebrate her as our Star of the Month.

However, the Hollywood Studio Club, a hotel for women, run by women, tried to give these women a safe haven in the storm. Started by a librarian and nurtured by movie star MARY PICKFORD, among others, this hotel provided a safe place to live and helped nurture the budding careers of future Hollywood Stars such as MAUREEN O”SULLIVAN, LINDA DARNELL, DOROTHY MALONE, DONNA REED, KIM NOVAK, MARILYN MONROE and SHARON TATE. For our Halloween 2023 episode, we take you on a tour of Peyton Place—the 1956 novel by Grace Metalious, 1957 Fox movie starring Lana Turner, and the mid-late-60s TV series starring Dorothy Malone and Mia Farrow (among many others) that reinvented television. We discuss the strange journey of Metalious's scabrous and scathing vision from satire to soap opera, in the course of which the story of shack-dweller Selena Cross's violation by her stepfather becomes the story of lower-middle-class Betty Anderson's resentful ambition, while ostensible protagonist Allison MacKenzie goes from being a bit of a jerk to being a nightmare of willfulness.

Tashlin uses comic books to portray American culture as a strangely sexless-yet-sex-obsessed idiot savant with an exuberantly violent imagination, while Wilder turns smut in a small town into an uncannily beatific examination of objectification and toxic masculinity in American popular culture. We also look at the way that Tashlin and Lewis turn signifiers of gender and sexuality into a richly indecipherable text that comments on the madness of heteronormativity and gender stereotypes.  Further Reading: Elise's “Jerry Lewis and the Gender of Work.” Elise's “Billy Wilder and the 1930s Romantic Comedy” Time Codes: 0h 01m 00s:    ARTISTS AND MODELS (1955) [dir. Comedian and actor Josh Fadem (Twin Peaks: The Return, Better Call Saul) joins to discuss Douglas Sirk's 1956 melodrama, Written on the Wind starring Rock Hudson, Lauren Bacall, Robert Stack, and Dorothy Malone. Sirk's deeply layered themes of American capitalism and sexual inadequacy are explored in this wild and far-ranging discussion that folds in Freddy Krueger, nymphomania, Unsolved Mysteries, Glenn Ford, Regarding Henry, Gene Roddenberry, and much much more. It's conversation no film fan should let blow past them. (Written on the Wind is currently available to stream on The Criterion Channel.)

“Good Luck, Miss Wyckoff” is brutal to watch. Set in the intolerant town of Freedom, Kansas in 1951, the film is about a middle aged virgin (a liberal teacher who stands up for an accused Communist teacher, and fights to integrate her school) who is suffering a mental breakdown due to her lack of sexual experience until she is raped by a black student. Her reaction is a confounding challenge to our expectations. Directed by Marvin J. Chomsky. Screenplay by Polly Platt based upon a book by William Inge. Starring Anne Heywood, John Lafayette, Donald Pleasance, Robert Vaughn, Earl Holliman, Carolyn Jones, Ronee Blakeley, Dorothy Malone, Doris Roberts, Dana Elcar, R.G. Armstrong & Jocelyn Brando How is the world wrong about Good Luck, Miss Wyckoff From Andras Jones: “Good Luck, Miss Wyckoff” is one of only two films produced from Polly Platt screenplays. The other was “Pretty Baby”. These films give a hint of a cinematic voice drawn to the dangerous and misunderstood aspects of womens' sexuality. I don't think even people who know Polly Platt talk enough about this double feature. William Richert's adaptation of Richard Condon's assassination novel is the star-studded pinnacle of 1970's paranoid cinema crossed with a very dark and dry and dirty comedy. Directed by William Richert. Starring Jeff Bridges, John Huston, Anthony Perkins, Belinda Bauer, Eli Wallach, Richard Boone, Ralph Meeker, Sterling Hayden, Toshiro Mifune, Dorothy Malone and Elizabeth Taylor How is the world wrong about this movie? From Andras: “Winter Kills” works a lot better for those steeped in JFK assassination lore which made it hip upon release in 1979 and incredibly obscure now. Add to this the film's insistence on being funny and I guess most people don't know what to make of it. So, is the world wrong or just plain ignorant? Coups de cœur :Thomas : revoir 007 Thunderball (Terence Young)Thibaut : revoir Josey Wales, hors-la-loi (Clint Eastwood)Carla : Nocturne Indien (Antonio Tabucchi)Gaal: Les Mains Sales (Jean-Paul Sartre)PLAYLISTPREGENERIQUE/ Extrait JP Manchette à ApostrophesRIHANNA/ No Love AllowedARCHIE BELL AND THE DRELLS / Tighten Up

Red Time For Bonzo: A Marxist-Reaganist Film Podcast (Ronald Reagan Filmography)

In yet another cinematic variation on the Earp legend, some John McCain-Republican types enlist the Gipper to clamp down on the wrong kind of vice and chicanery in Cottonwood, Arizona. Reagan is aided in his quest by a pair of blond brothers (Alex Nicol and Gilligan's Island's Russell Johnson) - one of whom gets himself involved in a rather tiresome romance with destined-to-fail bombshell Ruth Hampton. The film boasts an extremely tense lynching scene, good chemistry between its protagonist and co-star Dorothy Malone, and a refreshingly nihilistic take on the hoary "civilizationist" tropes of the genre. Those being the Roger Corman-produced "The Fast and Furious" (1955), and the first film Corman directed, "Five Guns West" (1955). After that they look at the film that won her an Oscar for best supporting actress in 1956's "Written on the Wind".
