You might not realize just how much your oral health is tied to your heart and overall wellness—but it's a connection worth knowing about. I caught up again with my amazing colleague, Dr. Ellie Campbell, and we got into why regular lab tests sometimes miss the early signs of things like heart disease, stroke, and even dementia. We talked about why your dentist could actually be one of the most important people on your health team, plus some sneaky risks that only advanced testing can catch. Dr. Ellie has been in family medicine for over 25 years, mixing integrative and functional approaches to help people truly understand their health. She shared some eye-opening stuff about how sleep apnea can mess with your blood sugar, why fasting blood sugar numbers matter more than you think, and how your genes could be playing a bigger role than you realize. She also gave some solid advice on how to speak up for yourself in a medical system that doesn't always connect these dots. If you're someone who wants to take better care of yourself and catch problems before they sneak up, this episode is packed with tips that really hit home. And by the way, just to sweeten things up—my new Mighty Maca Mango is out now, perfect for spring and summer. It's a delicious twist on Mighty Maca that you can toss in sparkling water or make into popsicles. Check it out anytime at dranna.com—it's a little treat with big benefits. Most of us have no idea how much our mouths are telling us—and not just about our teeth. In this jaw-dropping episode, I sat down with Dr. Ellie Campbell, a powerhouse in functional medicine and the author of The Blood Pressure Blueprint, to uncover how oral health is deeply tied to cardiovascular disease, hormonal imbalance, cognitive decline, and more. You'll learn why blood pressure readings at your doctor's office might be misleading, how mouth bacteria can trigger heart attacks and Alzheimer's, and why mouth taping at night could be the simplest step toward better sleep and brain health. Dr. Campbell also reveals the truth about fluoride, xylitol, and why so many root canals fail—not because of the procedure, but because of the hidden pathogens no one's testing for. This episode is packed with “aha” moments, from the dangers of undiagnosed sleep apnea to the critical blood and saliva tests that can actually save your life. If you care about your heart, brain, and hormones—and want to take back control of your health—this one's a must-listen. Grab a cup of tea (maybe some hibiscus!) and tune in. Your body will thank you—and so will your smile. Key Timestamps [00:00:00] Introduction [00:03:40] Dr. Ellie's story & the overlooked cause of her patient's stroke. “Blood pressure is an important marker – the first red light on the dashboard that something is amiss.” – Dr. Ellie CampbellCardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for women. As practitioners, it's crucial that we're thinking about preventative care strategies and measuring blood pressure as a public health service to all of our patients. It's the first signal that something is out of balance with the body. While we don't think about it a lot, oral health and airway health are also significant, but often quiet, contributors to cardiovascular issues that we should proactively assess in our patients. Comprehensive screening and monitoring of these cardiovascular risk factors, especially for midlife women, can make all the difference in preventing serious health events.Today, I'm excited to share my conversation with Integrative Family Medicine physician Dr. Ellie Campbell. Dr. Campbell advocates for a whole-body view of health management and believes that we need to shift how healthcare providers view and address the interconnectedness of oral health and cardiovascular wellness to achieve better patient outcomes. In this conversation, Dr. Campbell and I discuss the connections between cardiovascular and oral health, why regular blood pressure and oral health screenings are essential, the new guidelines for blood pressure, special considerations for women in midlife, preventative strategies for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, the role of our lifestyle choices, the impact of COVID-19 and long COVID on cardiovascular health, supporting the immune system, and more.Enjoy the episode, and let's innovate and integrate together!---Learn more or watch the video version of this conversation at https://integrativewomenshealthinstitute.com/top-preventive-tests-every-woman-should-have-to-prevent-stroke-and-heart-attack-with-integrative-family-medicine-physician-dr-ellie-campbell-do/.Connect with me and access our entire platform at IntegrativeWomensHealthInstitute.com (https://integrativewomenshealthinstitute.com/). From Huddersfield to Bangkok, pop fans - are you ready for an adventure? Join Joel and David as they kick start a new ‘Discovering' series where they each pick a hidden gem of an artist from the 2000s and select 5 songs from their catalogue for a taste test! Signed to Jive Records and launched in 1999, British pop starlet Ellie Campbell looked and sounded like a ready-made pop star here for the GMTV and Smash Hits audience! Despite having no formal singing or dance training, Ellie's warm soulful tone and star quality was undeniable. The Yorkshire songstress worked with same hitmakers behind Steps (Pete Waterman, Mark Topham, Karl Twigg), launched a handful of singles - including the UK Top 30 smash ‘So Many Ways' - and even found herself performing at the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras! Though she wasn't in the pop game for long, Ellie's bops are forever - and her self-titled album “Ellie” is a real gem! Before LISA from BLACKPINK, in the 2000s, the world had Thai pop princess Tata Young. Her crossover success in Japan, India, China and across Southeast Asia was pretty much unheard of. Thanks in huge part to her fun signature banger and your new favourite bratty anthem: ‘Sexy, Naughty, Bitchy' (co-written by legendary pop songwriter Savan Kotecha, who has worked with Ariana Grande, Britney, One Direction, and Dannii Minogue). Tata's catalogue of English tunes is top-tier, as she brings her Main Pop Girl Energy to songs that would be released in the West by Ashley Tisdale, The Cheetah Girls, Play and more. The writing credits on her three English albums read like a ‘who's who' of RBAY! royalty - Jamelia, Leona Lewis, Natasha Bedingfield, Samantha Jade etc. If you're liking this ‘Discovering' concept - let Joel and David know in the comments who you'd like us to cover next! This week on ReInvent Healthcare, I have a very special guest, Dr. Ellie Campbell, and together we go over the connection between oral care and the risk of cardiovascular disease. We also go over the tests that can be done as well as signs to watch out for when it comes to assessing clients who are showing symptoms or are at risk. .Dr. Ellie Campbell is a functional medicine doctor who specializes in cardiovascular disease prevention and hypertension. She is also the author of The Blood Pressure Blueprint which is a holistic guide to tackle hypertension. IN THIS EPISODE:Oral Health and Cardiovascular DiseaseOral care can significantly impact cardiovascular disease through a complex interplay of factors. Poor oral hygiene and gum disease can lead to chronic inflammation in the mouth, which may release inflammatory molecules into the bloodstream. Harmful bacteria from the mouth can also enter the bloodstream, potentially contributing to the formation of arterial plaque and triggering immune responsesThe body's immune response to oral infections can lead to increased production of white blood cells and inflammatory markers, promoting atherosclerosis and clot formation. Also, oral health can influence existing cardiovascular conditions, such as increasing the risk of bacterial endocarditis in individuals with heart valve issues. That is why maintaining good oral hygiene and addressing oral health concerns can play a crucial role in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.Importance of BiomarkersBiomarkers play a vital role in understanding the relationship between oral care and cardiovascular disease. These biomarkers provide measurable indicators of the body's response to oral health and can help identify potential risks and underlying mechanisms. Some biomarkers to take note of are Lp-PLA2 as well as Myeloperoxidase. These biomarkers can provide clues to the presence of dental infections and inflammation.Collaboration between Medical and Dental PractitionersIn order to address the oral-systemic connection, there is a need for a collaboration between medical doctors and dentists. By working together, we can identify and treat dental conditions that may contribute to cardiovascular risk and improve the overall health of our clients. Did you know that your oral health impacts your cardiac health? Today on The Girlfriend Doctor, we welcome Dr. Ellie Campbell back to the show to address the epidemic of preventable heart attacks and strokes in America. Dr. Campbell has been a board-certified family doctor for thirty years, and today she shares the story of a tooth infection that caused a deadly stroke in one of her beloved patients. In this episode, Dr. Campbell educates you on the dental meridian and how each tooth is connected electrically to a specific organ. This connection is why a seemingly insignificant tooth infection can indicate a deeper issue within the body. Dr. Campbell believes that heart attacks are optional and strokes are preventable. By integrating dental and medical care, doctors and dentist could work together to diagnose patients earlier to prevent cardiac issues later in life. Conventional dentistry alone cannot address the deeper health issues associated with tooth decay, cavities, and residual bacteria from root canals. She gives you the resources to protect your oral health at home and connect with a holistic dentist. Your oral health may be the key to saving your life; even with a family history of cardiac arrest, you can protect yourself from heart attacks and strokes by protecting your teeth. On this episode of The Girlfriend Doctor, we sat down with Dr. Campbell and Danny Grannick, two pioneers who are uniting the world of dental and medical care today. Doctors are not trained to account for dental health when diagnosing patients, leaving many people vulnerable to Alzheimer's, Cancer, Infertility and a slew of other complications that are ultimately avoidable. Dr. Ellie Campbell has been working in family medicine for 30 years and is board certified by the American Academy of Integrative Medicine. Like most doctors, she was never addressing oral health with her patients until she witnessed the decline of a patient suffering from an unknown dental infection. Now, her stance is that absolutely no medical team is complete without an oral hygienist on staff. Danny Grannick has developed an at home test kit ,using PCR technology, to give people insight into the microbiome of their mouth. Understanding the imbalance of microbes in your mouth gives your dentist and doctor the information to address infections, prevent further decay and even prevent disease. Dentists and doctors alike are waking up to the reality that our entire body is interconnected and the two practices can no longer remain separate, because in reality they are not. The Catalyst: Sparking Creative Transformation in Healthcare
“I didn't wanna be the person who only served rich people in my community. My heart was to serve those who need me,” shares Dr. Ellie Campbell, Founder of Campbell Integrated Family Medicine. In this week's episode of The Catalyst, Dr. Ellie introduces the scholarship membership program that she created to meet the needs of indigent patients. Finances can be a large boundary to accessing functional medicine. To help those with great need in her community, Dr. Ellie designed a membership program based on Habitat for Humanity's housing program. Through the membership program, qualifying patients can exchange 15 hours of approved community service for 3 months of functional medical care. This empowers patients to have a hand in improving their lives while benefiting the community at the same time. Tune into this week's episode of The Catalyst for a conversation with host Dr. Lara Salyer and special guest Dr. Ellie Campbell about ways to serve low-income patients without handing out services for free. Learn more about the scholarship membership model and how it can benefit the patients, providers, and community. Quotes • “I've learned a lot of lessons, one of which was that I believe free is valueless when it comes to healthcare. The more we gave the patients, the less they wanted to work for themselves.” (3:09-3:49) • “I didn't wanna be the person who only served rich people in my community. My heart was to serve those who need me. Not just those with a big, deep pocketbook.” (10:09-10:20) • “I have a concierge-style membership program, so people pay me a monthly membership fee to be my patient. It's a retainer. They hold the spot. They pay me the same amount of money every month, whether they see me or whether they don't. Instead of paying me in cash for my membership fee, I provide them with a scholarship membership log sheet. They go out in the community and they have to do 15 hours of community service. Once they've done 15 hours of community service, that earns them 1 quarter of membership.” (14:32-15:15) • “It's a win, win, win. I win because I quantify the amount of charity work that I do. The patients get their care with dignity. They know how much it is, they have to work for it, they have to earn it. If they don't do their hours, they don't get care from me.” (17:33-18:15) • “That money when it goes into the tithing checking account, that's charity money. That's not taxed. The fun part is how do we distribute that money? You've got the money in the account and it's ready and waiting for charity.” (26:57-27:46) • “No matter how hard it feels, no matter where you are in your own financial journey, you just start someplace and give something. The rewards that you reap do truly exceed the commitment to the dollar.” (29:13-29:30) Links To learn more from Dr. Ellie Campbell: https://www.campbellfamilymedicine.com/home Watch on YouTube: Campbell Family Medicine Tithing Policy Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwWmyEw6D7o Connect with Lara: Website: https://drlarasalyer.com Instagram: @drlarasalyer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drlarasalyer Linked-In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drlarasalyer/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DrLaraSalyer TikTok: @Creativity.Doctor Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm
