Kevin Carter, Founder and Chief Investment Officer of EMQQ Global and the INQQ Fund joined Steve Darling from Proactive to highlight the resurgence of emerging markets and the strong performance of EMQQ and INQQ funds in 2025. After more than a decade of lagging behind developed markets, Carter believes the tide is finally turning. He noted that the EMQQ Fund is up 20% year-to-date, reflecting growing investor interest and momentum in markets that have long been overlooked. “We're finally seeing a rotation back into emerging markets,” Carter said, pointing to improving fundamentals and demographic tailwinds. Carter outlined a compelling long-term investment thesis: emerging markets represent 85% of the world's population and 90% of its future, as measured by people under 30. These markets also tend to grow faster economically, and they're now undergoing a massive digital transformation. This transformation is being fueled by the widespread adoption of affordable smartphones, which are providing billions of people with internet access for the first time. “They're not getting laptops,” Carter explained. “They're getting their first-ever computer—and it's a low-cost, Android-based smartphone.” This leapfrog into the digital world is creating enormous opportunities for local tech companies, many of which are held by EMQQ and INQQ. Carter cited WeChat in China, Eternal (formerly Zomato) in India, and Nubank in Brazil as standout examples of companies leading the digital consumer revolution in their regions. While geopolitical tensions—particularly between the U.S. and China—continue to cast uncertainty over global markets, Carter stressed that most of the companies EMQQ focuses on are domestically driven and insulated from export-related risks. He remains optimistic about a rebound in emerging markets and sees this as a long-term shift: “We believe the next decade belongs to the digital consumer in emerging markets. The growth story is just beginning.” #proactiveinvestors #hanetf #EmergingMarkets #Investing #Technology #GrowthOpportunities #India #China #EMQQGlobal #TechInvestment #DigitalTransformation #GlobalEconomy #InvestmentStrategies #MarketInsights #KevinCarter #FinancialNews #EconomicOutlook #FutureInvesting #MarketTrends #EmergingEconomies #InvestorTips #MarketAnalysis #InvestmentPortfolio #DigitalIndia #TechBoom #MarketWatch #EconomicProspects

EMQQ Global founder Kevin Carter talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the IMQQ India Internet UCITS ETF, a fund designed to capture the rapid digital transformation happening in India. Carter emphasised that India is experiencing a "digital golden age", driven by three key megatrends: rising consumer demand, widespread smartphone adoption, and expanding internet access. Carter explained that India has the world's largest and youngest population, coupled with one of the fastest-growing economies. As more Indians gain access to affordable smartphones and internet services, they are rapidly integrating into the digital economy. He highlighted that companies in India's internet sector—ranging from food delivery to online beauty retail—are experiencing explosive growth. He also pointed out the India Stack, a government-backed digital infrastructure initiative that has enabled financial inclusion for 800 million people through Aadhaar-based digital identification. This foundation, along with seamless digital payments, is accelerating India's transition into a highly connected economy. Discussing the ETF's methodology, Carter stated that the fund focuses on India's new-age technology companies that dominate e-commerce, financial services, and consumer technology. Some key holdings include Zomato (food delivery), Nykaa (beauty e-commerce), and Makemytrip (online travel services). Although the market has seen a correction recently, Carter remains bullish on India's long-term digital growth, comparing it to China's rise two decades ago. He believes long-term investors have a significant opportunity in India's expanding internet sector. Watch more insightful interviews on Proactive's YouTube channel. Kevin Carter, Founder and Chief Investment Officer of EMQQ Global and the INQQ Fund joined Steve Darling from Proactive to discuss India's rapidly evolving e-commerce sector and stock market trends following his recent visit to the country. Carter emphasized the explosive growth of "quick commerce", a disruptive retail model delivering goods in under 10 minutes, which is expanding at over 100% annually. This trend is reshaping India's retail sector, challenging both traditional mom-and-pop (kirana) stores and established e-commerce giants like Amazon and Flipkart. Beyond urban centers, investment in second- and third-tier cities is surging, with mutual fund participation from these regions rising from just a few percent to nearly 20%. India's stock market has shown strong long-term growth, but recent corrections have impacted small- and mid-cap stocks. Meanwhile, retail trading activity has skyrocketed, with brokerage accounts growing from 20 million to 170 million in just eight years. Carter also touched on U.S.-China-India relations, noting that potential policy shifts under a Donald Trump administration could influence global investment sentiment. With India's digital economy rapidly expanding, Carter sees significant long-term investment opportunities driven by rising consumer wealth, financial inclusion, and a tech-savvy population. #proactiveinvestors #hanetf #EmergingMarkets #Investing #Technology #GrowthOpportunities #India #China #EMQQGlobal #TechInvestment #DigitalTransformation #GlobalEconomy #InvestmentStrategies #MarketInsights #KevinCarter #FinancialNews #EconomicOutlook #FutureInvesting #MarketTrends #EmergingEconomies #InvestorTips #MarketAnalysis #InvestmentPortfolio #DigitalIndia #TechBoom #MarketWatch #EconomicProspects

Kevin T. Carter, founder and chief investment officer of EMQQ Global, joins the podcast to discuss opportunities in emerging and frontier market stocks. His first lesson: don't bother with the indexes. The real opportunities are to be found in individual stocks. Content Highlights The first issue with emerging market investing is the index. These do not accurately reflect the real opportunities (1:19); Individual stocks, especially of technology companies, have performed far better than the underlying index (6:25); There are three mega-trends that point to emerging markets growth over the long term (8:03); South America's E-commerce giant is not in any EM index. Neither is Brazilian digital bank Nu Holdings (15:14); A broad discussion of China, where things are not always as they appear in the western media... (19:22); Right now all eyes are on India. The story there is still in the early innings, but unfortunately options are limited for investors limited to US exchanges... (42:13); Other markets in South Asia also offer compelling opportunities. Especially Bangladesh (48:58). More Information on the Guest LinkedIn: TheKevinTCarter; Website: EMQQGlobal.com.

Kevin Carter, the Founder and Chief Investment Officer of EMQQ Global, recently discussed the immense potential of emerging markets in an interview with Steve Darling from Proactive. Emerging markets encompass 46 countries, primarily in Asia, South America, Africa, and Eastern Europe, home to 85% of the world's population, offering unparalleled growth opportunities. These markets have been growing at double the pace of developed economies, making them a prime destination for investors seeking growth. Carter emphasized the pivotal role of technology in these markets, citing examples like China and India, where technology-driven companies are experiencing rapid expansion. With the proliferation of affordable Android-based smartphones, emerging market consumers are becoming increasingly digital, leapfrogging traditional infrastructure constraints. India, in particular, caught Carter's attention as a standout emerging market. With its vast and youthful population, fastest-growing economy, booming middle class, and dynamic technology sector, India is poised for exponential growth. Its robust technology education system and unmatched talent pool further enhance its potential. Investors should undoubtedly keep a keen eye on emerging markets, where technology is the driving force behind a promising future. As the digital transformation takes hold, these markets offer abundant opportunities for those looking to diversify and tap into remarkable growth prospects. #proactiveinvestors #hanetf #EmergingMarkets #Investing #Technology #GrowthOpportunities #India #China #EMQQGlobal #TechInvestment #DigitalTransformation #GlobalEconomy #InvestmentStrategies #MarketInsights #KevinCarter #FinancialNews #EconomicOutlook #FutureInvesting #MarketTrends #EmergingEconomies #InvestorTips #MarketAnalysis #InvestmentPortfolio #DigitalIndia #TechBoom #MarketWatch #EconomicProspects #FinancialAdvice#invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

With Kevin Carter, Founder & CIO of EMQQ, The Emerging Markets Internet & Commerce ETF
Kevin Carter is the founder & CIO of EMQQ, an emerging markets internet & ecommerce index. Kevin's a diehard value investor but is also a believer in indexing having partnered with Princeton Economist Dr. Burton Malkiel for over two decades focusing on China/Emerging Markets. The three big megatrends of consumption, smartphones and the internet, make emerging markets an intriguing idea – we perhaps can't see it so clearly living in a developed economy, but as the general standard of living continues to improve globally, there's a massive opportunity. There's of course massive risks too. For one, just because an economy's got a lot going for it, doesn't make their markets a sure fire bet. Please note I am a small investor in this fund. You can learn more about EMQQ here: https://emqqglobal.com/Hey! EMQQ Global just launched their third emerging market ETF that focuses on the ecommerce and internet companies in the emerging and frontier markets. Kevin T. Carter is best known for launching EMQQ in 2014, which has become one of the top performing emerging market ETFs to date. Carter weighs in on why the INQQ ETF is focused solely on India. "Indian consumers are getting online for the first time through smartphones and its changing the way they live, work, eat, bank and learn," he states.
I last spoke to Kevin T. Carter in October last year, that time to discuss his original Emerging Markets Internet and E-commerce ETF, EMQQ, a fund with over $759 million in net assets. This time we caught up to discuss his second ETF; FMQQ was launched late last year and offers exposure to the Internet and Ecommerce sectors of the developing world, but this time, focusing on frontier markets and perhaps more pertinently, excluding China.I ask Kevin why McKinsey has identified the digital consumer revolution in the developing world as the biggest growth opportunity in the history of capitalism. We discuss his recent trip to South America, where he visited several companies in the current FMQQ portfolio; and we finish by looking ahead, identifying the investment themes most exciting Kevin right now. ETF Trends' CEO Tom Lydon discusses the Emerging Markets Internet & Ecommerce ETF (EMQQ) on this week's ETF of the Week podcast with Chuck Jaffe of the MoneyLife Show. EMQQ is a broad strategy of gaining exposure to the emerging middle-income consumer classes in developing countries and is up 33% since mid-March lows. Developing countries make up 85% of the world's population and have a greater demographic of young people, have faster growth rates, and make up 50% of the global GDP. Investors are traditionally underweight in emerging markets and by putting emphasis on the consumer sectors, it could help to drive growth for fundamentals that are improving.
In this episode, Arianne Alcorta @ETFguide talks with Kevin Carter, Founder & CIO at EMQQ about important investing trends in both frontier and emerging markets. At the forefront are e-commerce, greater internet connectivity and how overseas consumers are upgrading their lifestyles. Plus, you'll find out why a sector focused approach to investing in emerging and frontier markets could be a better growth investing strategy. ETF tickers mentioned in this episode include the Next Frontier Internet + Ecommerce ETF (FMQQ) and Emerging Markets Internet & Ecommerce ETF (EMQQ). While he considers himself an active "value" investor first and foremost, he has collaborated with Princeton economist and indexing legend, Dr. Burton Malkiel, for more than 20 years. Their work together began in 1999 with the development of eInvesting, a pioneer firm in fractional share brokerage that was acquired by ETRADE in 2000. In 2002 they founded Active Index Advisors, a pioneer in so-called "direct indexing" that was acquired by Natixis Asset Management in 2005. Kevin T. Carter is the Founder & Chief Investment Officer of EMQQ. While Kevin considers himself an active ‘value' investor - a Buffett/Munger disciple -, a 20+-year partnership with Princeton economist and indexing legend Dr. Burton Malkiel, has seen his career take an unexpected turn. Having co-founded Active Index Advisors in 2002, a pioneer in so-called ‘direct-indexing', Kevin's ambition had been to improve retail access to financial markets – a clear motivation in his founding of fractional share/dollar investment platform eInvesting, a few years earlier. However, it was a subsequent pivot toward China and Emerging Markets that changed everything. Kevin launched EMQQ in 2014, an Emerging Markets Internet & Ecommerce ETF (available to UK investors). Kevin and I discuss what McKinsey labels the “biggest opportunity in the history of capitalism” by analysing the regions' digital consumer revolution, before studying Evergrande's impact, and how to identify the next Tencent or Alibaba. Boom! For todays episode, I have an awesome interview with the man himself Kevin Carter
BIO: Kevin Carter is the Founder and CIO of the Emerging Markets Internet & Ecommerce ETF (NYSE: EMQQ) and Chairman of the EMQQ Index Committee. STORY: During the Dot-com boom, Kevin came across Amazon, but he dismissed it as just a bookstore not worth its valuation. He decided to short Amazon and lost a third of his net worth at the time. Had he bought the stock instead of short selling it, he would be $50,000 richer today. LEARNING: Short selling is a bad investment idea. Nobody can do a perfect valuation; always know that you are working with estimates. “Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment.” Kevin Carter Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/thekevintcarter/ (Kevin Carter) is the Founder and CIO of thehttps://emqqetf.com/ ( Emerging Markets Internet & Ecommerce ETF) (NYSE: EMQQ) and Chairman of the EMQQ Index Committee. Prior to EMQQ, Kevin was the Founder & CEO of AlphaShares, an investment firm offering five Emerging Markets ETFs in partnership with Guggenheim Investments. Previously Kevin was the Founder & CEO of Active Index Advisors, acquired by Natixis in 2005, and the Founder & CEO of eInvesting, acquired by ETRADE in 2000. Kevin received a degree in Economics from the University of Arizona and began his career in 1992 with Robertson Stephens & Company. Worst investment everIn the late 90s, Kevin was a very confident young value investor. He wanted to be like the likes of Warren Buffett. He had worked as an analyst professionally and got paid very well by hedge funds and mutual funds for his research. The Dot.com boom hitsThe Internet showed up, and then the Dot-com bubble burst. Kevin was relatively successful at that point and confident but also a bit naive. Kevin got wind of a new e-commerce company, Amazon, but he thought of it as just a bookstore. He believed that it shouldn’t be valued any differently. He spent a lot of time comparing Amazon to Barnes and Noble and was convinced that it would not amount to much. Kevin concluded that with a $1.4 billion market cap, Amazon’s stock would sell for just a fraction of that. He even predicted that the company would be lucky to sell for $200 million in cash. Short selling AmazonKevin decided to short Amazon in March of 1998. He lost about a third of his net worth in a day and a half. Amazon’s current market cap is $1.6 trillion. Had Kevin not short sold Amazon and instead bought the stock, his position today would be worth $50,000. Lessons learnedDon’t make valuation shortsShort selling to make money is a bad idea because it has complicated mathematics behind it. Most of the time, it is just not worth it. The other problem is when you short something, and you’re wrong, your exposure gets bigger. Andrew’s takeawaysLet go of hindsight biasWhen people make mistakes, they will often engage in hindsight bias. They look back and wish if only they had done this or that. The truth is, when you are making decisions, you’re making them with the best information you have and the application of your judgment at the time. Nobody can do a perfect valuationIt is tough to make a 100% correct evaluation. The solution is always to question everything when developing a valuation estimate and accept that it is an estimate. Kevin Carter, the Chief Investment Officer of EMQQ, breaks down his outlook on China in terms of internet and e-commerce. However, anti-trust monopoly issues are less important, and China's handling of these issues gives investors confidence.
The EMQQ Emerging Markets Internet & Ecommerce ETF (NYSEARCA: EMQQ) co-creator Kevin Carter tells Proactive how the fund approaches environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) investing. GameStop is selling up to 3.5 million new shares, looking to raise money amid their newfound hype and popularity in the investing world. Dan opens the show by explaining why this is actually a very smart business move... But he says even though it's the right move for GameStop, he wants no part in it. And he cautions anyone else still thinking about jumping on this train. Then Dan invites Kevin Carter onto the show to talk about one of the fastest-growing areas anywhere in the markets, that sadly many Americans overlook. Kevin is the founder and Chief Investment Officer at EMQQ, an Emerging Markets Internet and E-Commerce Index. Over the past 20 years, he's partnered with Princeton economist and indexing legend, Dr. Burton Malkiel, focusing on China and emerging markets, ultimately creating the EMQQ Index. During their conversation, Kevin teaches Dan some stunning facts about the massive opportunity investing in emerging markets outside of the U.S. provides today... (like did you know that over half of the world's mobile payment users live in Africa?) Kevin makes a very strong case for putting money in emerging markets today, even listing out a handful of his favorite personal holdings from his index... like one he calls the Amazon.com of Poland... another known as the Amazon.com of Africa... and even one little-known fintech company that Berkshire Hathaway bought 5% of during its IPO. Kevin says that if you have a long-term timeline, you absolutely need to take a look at the emerging markets internet sector... He calls it the "tip of the spear" when it comes to global growth. And finally, we had an ultra-light mailbag this week... So light, in fact, that Dan decided to hold off until next week's episode. So don't forget, please send in any questions you may have, any comments on the show, or even any politely-worded criticisms into us at feedback@investorhour.com... Until then, you can listen to Dan and Kevin's conversation and more on this week's episode.

Starting out as a classic value investor ala Graham and Buffett, EMQQfounder Kevin Carter had a revelation after the unwinding of the late 1990s tech bubble that emerging markets were going to be at the forefront of the next massive wave of internet growth. As Carter puts it, "You have billions of people just starting to go online, changing their consumer behavior... this is the greatest investing opportunity of our lifetimes." As a result of his revelation, Carter gradually made the shift from traditional value investing to high-octane emerging markets internet growth. At first he recommended funds like the Columbia Emerging Markets Consumer ETF (ECON) to friends and colleagues believing it to be the best fund available to capture this growth. But then about 7 years ago, Carter had a second revelation: The best fund to capture emerging market internet growth doesn't yet exist. Teaming up with his friend Dr. Burton Malkiel of "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" fame, he decided to form an index committee to create a pure-play index and accompanying ETF, the Emerging Markets Internet & Ecommerce ETF (EMQQ). The fund launched in 2014, gathering more than $400M in AUM over the past 5-plus years. In episode 187 we welcome our guest, Kevin Carter. Meb and Kevin start the conversation with some background on Kevin’s career, getting to know Burton Malkiel, and launching EMQQ. Kevin offers some of his thoughts on investing in China, including his initial thoughts about the prominence of state owned enterprises. Kevin mentions that a key component to investing in emerging markets is that it’s about the consumer. He notes that emerging and frontier markets are 85% of the world’s people and almost 90% of the people under the age of 30, the GDP of those people are still growing twice as fast as the rest of the world, and their incomes are growing. Kevin discusses that once he figured out that the indexes that were available to invest in these markets were allocated relatively heavily to the legacy, inefficient, state owned enterprise portion of economies, he got to work on building indexes that were more targeted to capture emerging market growth. Meb and Kevin then discuss the reality of emerging market allocations for most investors today, and talk about the current weights of emerging market indexes and the implications for investors. Kevin gets into launching and running EMQQ, and how the index is constructed. He follows with a discussion on emerging market internet company valuations and the current pace of revenue growth. Meb then poses what he thinks is some of the most common “pushback” he hears about why people can’t invest in China. Kevin addresses some of the arguments he hears for not investing in China, including made up numbers and communism and explains why he doesn’t think there is a lot of merit to those arguments. As the conversation winds down, Kevin covers his thoughts on India, which he thinks is a particularly interesting opportunity from the standpoint of population size and growth. All this and more in episode 187, including Kevin’s most memorable investment.
