Let us know what other topics or questions you'd like us to cover. Enjoy the episode!
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: An Analysis of Engineering Jobs on the 80,000 Hours Job Board, published by Jessica Wen on February 20, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. 0 Summary Cross-posted from the High Impact Engineers blog. The Google Doc version of the report can be found here. The Google Sheets of the data is here. This report analyses the (physical) engineering jobs posted on the 80,000 Hours job board from October 2022 to February 2024. We find that: The rate of new jobs added to the 80,000 Hours job board remains consistent throughout this period. The rate of new engineering jobs added to the 80,000 Hours job board more than doubled in July 2023 and has remained at this higher level since then. Half of the engineering jobs advertised on the 80,000 Hours job board are in biosecurity. For the engineering jobs on the 80,000 Hours job board, mechanical engineering skills are the most in-demand, followed by bioengineering. Almost half of the engineering jobs are US-based, and nearly a third are UK-based. The rest are mainly in Europe or Australia, with a handful based in India and other non-Western countries. 1 Introduction 1.1 Context Before October 2022, the "Engineering" job tag on the 80,000 Hours job board included both software and "physical"[1] engineering. We spoke with 80,000 Hours to separate software and "physical" engineering into two different tags, which they implemented in October 2022. This has been a huge help for the High Impact Engineers community. At that time, I set up email notifications to receive alerts when new jobs were posted to the 80,000 Hours job board using the "Engineering" job tag.[2] Speaking with other career coaches and community builders, there is a consensus that there is a general lack of information on the landscape of "EA jobs". Out of curiosity, I put this analysis of engineering jobs on the 80k job board together in ~8 hours. I expect 80k is probably in a better position to run these kinds of evaluations of the landscape of impactful jobs, but I thought that it would be helpful and of interest to the High Impact Engineers community and potentially the wider EA community to see these statistics. I focus only on jobs tagged "engineering" on the 80k job board, but I expect similar analyses could be made with other tags. After putting this report together, I shared it with Conor Barnes from 80,000 Hours to review. All the notes from 80k are from his feedback, which is greatly appreciated! 1.2 Some Caveats Since I received these notifications via email over the past 15 months, most of the jobs from the notifications are no longer open. This means that the "Type of engineering" and the "Country" data are the most likely to be inaccurate without access to the original job description. I have made my best guess to fill in this data according to the job titles, trying to find similar open roles at the companies, and doing general research on the organisations' websites. I have tried not to delete these email notifications, but I may have deleted some. As a result, this data set may be incomplete. However, I don't think this detracts too much from many of the conclusions that can be drawn from this set of data. Finally, here are some caveats on my views on the 80k job board. I'm sure they would agree with me that their job board is not the definitive list of impactful jobs, or even the definitive list of EA jobs (whatever that means!). They do a great job at keeping on top of opportunities within and outside of the EA ecosystem, but it's important to keep in mind that there are lots of other impactful jobs that 80k might miss, or they might have a different model of impact than you do[3]. As a result, I hope that readers will understand that this is not a reflection of the jobs that "EA" deems to be "valuable"[4], but more an attempt to understand the oppo...

Women in STEM: Hannah Stevens and Taylor Perko are two impressive ladies who co-host The Blonde Blueprint to Engineering, a podcast focused on increasing diversity in engineering through fun, informal conversations. These two, young female engineers are figuring out the industry as they go and I was lucky enough to be invited on their podcast. While speaking with them I realised what inspiring guests they would be on YOUR CAREER podcast as these Aerodynamics and Astronautics Engineers graduates will surely inspire all women in STEM around the world.Growing up, Hannah Stevens was always fascinated by planes, rockets, and space. Hanna is an Aerodynamics Engineer at Boeing. Her passion, mixed with a strong desire to succeed in things that are deemed difficult or impossible, brought her to aerospace engineering - where she can not only blaze new trails for women and other underrepresented groups in the industry, but also build rockets that take us to new worlds or design planes that seem to defy physics! Her leadership style is focused around change - how can processes be improved or how can we create better solutions for ourselves or our customers? This mentality helps her thrive in her role as an aerodynamics engineer in flight sciences and product development. Taylor Perko is an Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering major at the University of Washington. She’s passionate about space and space technology.Currently Taylor is at the NASA Johnson Space Center co-op program, working in various divisions within mission control including the Environmental and Thermal Operations Pathways Intern in the Space Flight Systems Division; Trajectory Operations Pathways Intern in the Flight Dynamics Division and Robotic Operations Pathways Intern in the EVA, Robotics, and Crew Systems Division. We have a lively discussion about how these two inspiring women got into engineering, the challenges they faced and how they overcame those challenges to excel in their respective fields. There are few young professionals who are brave enough to tackle diversity topics and yet their podcast, The Blond Blueprint of Engineering, peels back the curtain on what it takes to get ahead in a competitive field.WHERE TO FIND HANNAH AND TAYLOR:Website: blondeblueprint.comThe Careers Academy: www.thecareersacademy.online

Ever heard of hidden engineering jobs? Estimates indicate that over 80% of jobs filled each year are hidden jobs. What is a hidden job? Many will define hidden jobs as jobs that never get formally posted to job boards. But it goes further than that since many jobs posted on sites like Indeed are not real. They have already been filled before they were posted. They were hidden, and once the company found the person they needed, they formally posted to meet various guidelines and regulations. But, even though the opportunity had been posted, it was already filled. So the trick to finding new opportunities in engineering and technology is to find those hidden jobs before they are filled. Hidden Engineering Jobs - How to Find Jobs that Have Not Been Advertised (Podcast Outline) The mindset of hidden jobs - creating or finding a need Have you ever made a big purchase when you were not really looking? For a big-screen TV A car A home A vacation Jobs are the same process - advertising works Why are there jobs hidden Some jobs are not advertised YET. Some jobs are silent searches. Some jobs are not advertised because the company has not defined the position enough to write the ad. Many jobs are not even defined yet - the need is there but not apparent to the leaders about what they need or who (THESE ARE THE BEST HIDDEN JOBS). Define where you want to go Have a direction. There are too many to chase without focus. Think about your calling - what lights you up. Go after what is fun for you. Find the people doing the fun stuff and reach out to them for a reverse interview How to find them. How to reach out to them and what to say. What to say when you meet with them The three core questions to ask. The one million $ question to ask. How to end the meeting End on time - with them wanting to talk more. Do not leave a resume. Get an open invitation to contact them again. Thank them and leave. Evaluate the meeting Are they a top 40 pick? Do you like what you heard? What was their pain? Can you fix it? Define the opportunity as you see it. Put it into words. Does this person have the power and budget to hire? If not, can they get you to that person? How to follow-up Send a thank you immediately. Connect on LinkedIn with a personalized message. Set a 15, 30, 45, or 90 day follow-up time (Contactually/Excel/SalesForce). Create a process Repeat steps above to add new contacts and opportunities. Set a time to do follow-ups and DO THEM. Keep defining opportunities. Focus on the top 5 opportunities until they resolve or go away. Never stop - even when you land a job Click here to listen now. Matt & Alli were both working as engineers, hating their jobs, and yearning for more freedom when they learned about the FIRE community (Financial Independence Retire Early). The premise of FIRE is to focus on reducing spending and increasing investments with the goal of living off those investments and, thus, not having to work anymore. The idea is that you buy your freedom instead of buying things. Matt & Alli started saving up to 70% of their 6-figure salaries and within 3 years quit to work on the 2 online businesses they had created. In addition to quitting, they converted a sprinter van (they named Clifford) and started driving across the Americas and running their businesses from the road. They balance their time between helping millennials get out of debt through their coaching services and education programs at Owen Your Future and helping people treat themselves on the keto diet through their baked goods company Primal Noms. Here is what we chat about in this episode: How they realized that they didn’t want to just change jobs that they hated but completely change their lifestyles. How they learned about the FIRE movement and started on their journey to saving. How they dealt with other people’s opinions of their decisions What is the 4% rule? How they started their 2 side hustle businesses How they decided to quit their 6-figure jobs to travel the country The best and worst parts of traveling in a van How to be a part of FIRE even if you want to live off of a higher salary every year How Alli & Matt help millennials deal with their debt and budgeting How you can be a part of their live webinar on financial planning! The Premise: The efficiencies of network engineering will decimate engineering jobs. The panel debates if this is true. They look at if this will happen across the board, if engineers will just become programmers going forward, or if automation will actually benefit network engineers down the road. And if automation does eliminate all these jobs, does it then become a pernicious form of support lock-in? © Gestalt IT, LLC for Gestalt IT: Automation Will Kill Engineering Jobs – The On-Premise IT Roundtable
