Evan "Kidd" Bogart: When things get tough, lean in

Rebel Radio

Play Episode Listen Later May 24, 2023 47:20

Part 1 of 2 Evan "Kidd" Bogart seems like he would have had an easy ride to the top. He was born into music industry success — the son of Casablanca Records founder Neil Bogart and Kiss manager Joyce Bogart Trabulus. And today has a Grammy (for Beyonce's "Halo") and a long list of hit songs (see below), and now a movie — Spinning Gold — which he made with his brothers, about his father. In between is where it gets interesting. He tried to break through as a rapper in the 90s. When that didn't work, he started in the music business and became known as the guy who discovered Eminem and didn't get credit for it (you'll hear a bit of that story in our episode). Evan started again, only to have it fall apart and have to move home at 26, and start again. You'll have to listen to our interview to find out how it all turned around for him, and the lessons he learned from the ups and downs. But it should be obvious that never giving up is core for Evan, and that his love and passion for music has driven him through life's challenges. Make sure you come back next week for part 2 where we talk about the incredible movie Spinning Gold, on which Evan is executive producer, music supervisor, and composer. Check it out at https://www.spinninggold.movie Meanwhile, here's just a partial list of the artists Evan has contributed to: Eminem Maroon 5 One Republic Rhianna Styles of Beyond Planet Asia Jason Derulo Sean Kingston Enrique Iglesias Jennifer Lopez Lizzo Learn more about your ad choices. Lingthusiasm - A podcast that's enthusiastic about linguistics

We use questions to ask people for information (who's there?), but we can also use them to make a polite request (could you pass me that?), to confirm social understanding (what a game, eh), and for stylistic effect, such as ironic or rhetorical questions (who knows!).  In this episode, your hosts Lauren Gawne and Gretchen McCulloch get enthusiastic about questions! We talk about question intonations from the classic rising pitch? to the British downstep (not a dance move...yet), and their written correlates, such as omitting a question mark in order to show that a question is rhetorical or intensified. We also talk about grammatical strategies for forming questions, from the common (like question particles and tag questions in so many languages), to the labyrinthine history that brings us English's very uncommon use of “do” in questions. Plus: the English-centrically-named wh-word questions (like who, what, where), why we could maybe call them kw-word questions instead (at least for Indo-European), and why we don't need to stress out as much about asking “open” questions.  Read the transcript here: https://lingthusiasm.com/post/701222250525949952/episode-74-transcript-who-questions-the Announcements: Lingthusiasm turns 6 this month! We invite you to celebrate six years of linguistics enthusiasm with us by sharing the show - you can share a link to an episode you liked or just share your lingthusiasm generally. Most people still find podcasts through word of mouth, and lots of them don't yet realise that they could have a fun linguistics chat in their ears every month (or eyes, all Lingthusiasm episodes have transcripts!). If you share Lingthusiasm on social media, tag us so we can reply, and if you share in private, we won't know but you can feel a warm glow of satisfaction - or feel free to tell us about it on social media if you want to be thanked! We're also doing a listener survey for the first time! This is your chance to tell us about what you're enjoying about Lingthusiasm so far, and what else we could be doing in the future - and your chance to suggest topics! It's open until December 15, 2022. And we couldn't resist the opportunity to add a few linguistic experiments in there as well, which we'll be sharing the results of next year. We might even write up a paper about the survey one day, so we have ethics board approval from La Trobe University for this survey. Take the survey here! https://bit.ly/lingthusiasmsurvey22 In this month's bonus episode we get enthusiastic about a project that Gretchen did to read one paper for each of the 103 languages recorded in a recent paper by Evan Kidd and Rowena Garcia about child language acquisition. We talk about some of the specific papers that stood out to us, and what Gretchen hoped to achieve with her reading project. https://www.patreon.com/lingthusiasm Join us on Patreon now to get access to this and 60+ other bonus episodes, as well as access to the Lingthusiasm Discord server where you can chat with other language nerds. https://www.patreon.com/lingthusiasm For links mentioned in this episode: https://lingthusiasm.com/post/701222097876369408/episode-74-who-questions-the-questions-we-use

In this episode, we mix things up and bring on world class sprinter and 400m hurdler Johnny Dutch with filmmaker Evan Kidd. Evan produced and directed a new documentary on Johnny's Olympic journey called Run of the Picture.  The film follows the parallel paths of Johnny's journey to the Olympics and his own personal path in narrative film making. Johnny is the only world class sprinter on the planet who has also made a Zombie movie, and his journey to both hallmarks is fascinating. Plus, we dig more into the track itself and talk about prepping for and racing the 400m hurdles, including all of its technical details.  You will be inspired by Johnny's story and have a new runner to cheer on in the build-up to the Tokyo 2020 games.  To watch the movie for free on Amazon Prime, click here: https://www.amazon.com/Run-Picture-Johnny-Dutch/dp/B07R59WV8B/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 Looking for the Rogue Expeditions trip giveaway? Children are the best language learners, says psycholinguist Evan Kidd. But how do children learn languages so easily, and why is learning another language so hard when you're an adult? It's something we've been wondering since we moved to Barcelona, Spain this summer. Evan Kidd shares his quest to put together the complex puzzle of how humans learn language. What he's discovered might change the way you think about your own native tongue. Children must process their language in order to learn it; therefore a complete explanation of language acquisition must incorporate a parsing mechanism that enables children to identify and extract linguistic patterns from their input. In my talk I will provide an overview and update to the Canberra Longitudinal Child Language project, a large-scale longitudinal individual differences study of children’s language processing. The study is tracking children’s language processing skills across time and linking them to their subsequent language acquisition, with the aim of moving towards more dynamic mechanistic explanations of the acquisition process.

Language is one the crowning cognitive achievements of our species. With seemingly little effort, children acquire and master the subtleties of complex facets of language like phonology, grammar, and meaning. In comparison, as adults most of us find it difficult to learn a second language, despite our mature memory and learning systems. For many years child language researchers argued that, because first language acquisition appears so effortless, children must come to the language learning problem with significant innate knowledge of language. As a result, less effort was channelled into investigating how much of language is learnable, and how. In my talk I will reframe the language acquisition process as one that involves significant learning, which starts remarkably early in the womb. In particular, I will show that children are highly skilled at detecting linguistic regularities in their environment, and that properties of interaction create socio‐cognitive ecologies ripe for language learning. Biography: Evan Kidd is an Associate Professor in the Research School of Psychology at The Australian National University, and is a CI in the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language. He completed his PhD in Psycholinguistics at La Trobe University, and has held academic positions at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, The University of Manchester, and La Trobe University. His research concentrates on language acquisition and language processing across different languages and in different populations.
